  • There are some paper types which may have a fibrous consistency, such as Himalayan made papers of Daphne aurantiaca bark. While this means the paper is particularly robust, difficult to tear with great longevity. A fibrous surface can make fine painting and especially writing on with a metal nib pen particularly troublesome.
‪@Tashi-Mannox‬ demonstrates how to size/prime a fibrous paper surface as well as to burnish to a smooth workable finish.
Working on stretch mounted paper (see video part 1) either while still wet or when dry. With a broad soft brush, apply a thin even coat of whisked egg-white foam, which has been let down with either water or vinegar.
Once totally dry, use a piece of smooth polished agate stone to rub to burnish the surface of the paper to a semi gloss.
The paper is then primed ready to take fine calligraphy or painting without the nib of a pen catching the fibres, as well as allowing smooth flowing penmanship. A smooth polished paper surface is also ideal for gilding, if one wishes to illuminate the artwork with gold or any other precious metal leaf.
