Welcome to Retro Hack Shack After Hours--my second RUclips channel! My name is Aaron and on this channel I make, break, and hack on vintage computer systems and other technology. I have a love of computers from the 70s, 80s, and 90s..
A little about me ...
I have been a maker since I was old enough to hold a screwdriver. I have worked in the IT industry for companies like Cisco, New Relic, NetApp, Oracle, Sun Microsystems, and Hewlett Packard. I co-host several shows about technology for TWiT.tv including FLOSS Weekly. In 2012 I founded Benicia Makerspace. I also wrote a book called Linux for Makers which you can find in the links below.

"Not very great gaming" so you gave it to a friend?! One of a kind, I guess. Namastè.
How do I ask for replacement parts that I need?
OOOhhhhh "the magic place" 🤗....... I still prefers the Dubai one do.... I mean potato bag full of microprocessors, Man look!!😳.. »» ruclips.net/video/uL1pWrgcGlw/видео.html ... I wanna go on vacation to Dubai.. just for visit that scrap yard 🙁..
With LGR not doing as many of his thrifting videos lately, this was satisfying.
How does one find an e-waste place that will take all your e-waste?
such a cool place. absolutely everything is locked away here. so impossible to save anything. quite sad.
How do you find these places
18:21 - "The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel."
your treasure is so different sir for some people sometimes for me and zamzam water
This is really great. Re-Furbish, Preserve history.
If I could, I would take a lot of stuff with me
One of the toughest things is that I can't take everything. I have to draw a line somewhere. I take as much as I can and try to pass it on.
This was great. Can you interview the guy who gave the safety briefing? He has seen a lot of stuff go down and pass through that facility. Thanks again.
Richard is great. He is a former IT tech and knows a lot about vintage computers.
@@RetroHackShackAfterHours"Ever seen two people fighting over a tube amp?" 😂😂😂
I have one of those tube testers!
There's an e-waste collection company near me, with dumpsters, but most of what I have found is nearly destroyed. I have found some complete things: cameras, cell phones, some other things, but what the company does is tear the PCs, laptops, boxes, stereos, monitors, large screen TV's up so for the most part, they can't be used. Or not worth taking as it would cost more $$ than its worth to rebuild. It's mostly scrap. Lots to look at, dig through but not much worth taking. This place you are at is at least set up where you can come in, look, and buy. 5:20 nice 27" curved monitor!! Not sure if the place near me has an open day to sell items. Ad a kind of hobby I look for electronics in dumpsters and curbside stuff. That Sony Trinitron still use some tubes?
Hi Aaron, nice finds on e-waste. Great content. Greetings from Steven from the Netherlands
Thanks and greetings!
Man, seeing this poor Sound Blaster AWE32 Model CT3990 (9:50) in this condition, is truly heartbreaking. It deserved way better than to end up like this. Despite this, I'd like to express my gratitude for this amazing content! I really appreciate it. You're awesome!
Thank you!
The chips could still live on used on a clone card!
At 9:24 You picked up and chucked back an AMIGA 500 INTERNAL Floppy Drive!!!
Good eye! I'll see if it is still there this Wed.
Man... I live in an e-waste desert, and that's probably a good thing. I'd be running out of money on a regular basis.
E-Waste Wednesday, Edit Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Upload Sunday LOL! Thanks for all the great videos Aaron, please continue making them. The Sony Trinitron would be great with my CoCo Computer.
Ewaste around me don't sell to the public. Once it goes to Ewaste, it doesn't come back out.
Same, near me it all just goes to recycling.
Awesome tour of your ewaste facility! It's great to see those items get a second life! Great video!
Thank you for that great work
Trinitron was a nice pickup. Was happy to see you plug in a Sega Genesis as period correct.
9:56 More likely that gold scrappers cut the ISA fingers off... The bane of retro collectors.
Yeah. That's true. I don't see how that would be worth it though.
I used to see it more often about 10 years ago, less lately... They cut the fingers off because there's more gold there than the rest of the PCB. They soak it in a dish of acid to separate. Scrappers also used to take all the Pentium Pro CPU's because those have a high gold content... Makes them a little more rare today than they should be.

was my very first computer as well, started with 4k and hacked it quite a bit over the several years I used it, I believe we (Dad and I ) managed to force 128k of memory in it, seem to recall having to switch banks (or something) to be able to use it all. Also added a power LED and a video inverter, among a few other things that I can't remember. Loved that game as well!
I'll take that case....
Could of just bought a older HP digital scope on ebay for a hundred bucks.
need toi save many more
So you got the common cold. Congrats! Welcome to humanity.
Dang, covid 19 still around in 2024? well that's not good! 1:28
Too bad there isn't a service to remotely fix these old PCs online. Lol
How were you able to get this from an electronic recycler?
Is it a battery, or is it a socketed Dallas - or an unsocketed!
It is a CR 2032 battery
I worked at Microsoft when 95 was released. The whole main campus went nuts.
Very cool video, thanks for doing this 🙂 As a teen during the early 90s that was enthusiastic about computers, I ran across my share of boxes. One of the things I really miss from back in the day was the cases. They were varied and had personality. Now they're all generic, bland, and "modern" in a boring kind of way imho. Well, this certainly brought back memories from simpler times, thanks for sharing!
Dont forget to Scream like Gene Wilder iTs @LLLLL!!!!vvv333!
You should leave the modem in. I mean, there's no reason not to have it.
Are you allowed to take stuff at your e-waste?
What's a guy gotta do to purchase that from you LOL! No Seriously, I'm looking for a win95 machine for my collection!
The Graphics card is not from 2001, "Diamond Stealth 64 Video 2001" is just the model name of this card, which is from 1995
Windows 95 was the time i got my first true multimedia pc has they called it then and i loved it ill always remember the startup sound . Yes i did have a atari st and micro computers before then but i still think Windows 95 was when pc became easier for everyone and the time of pc gaming
The cache stick in PC like this one was called a "COAST module." "COAST" was an acronym for "Cache On A STick," iirc
I bet someone had removed the CPU and later someone had a spare Pentium 133 that they put in there but didn't have the proper heatsink/fan, so they put that on temporarily.
I wish we had an e-waste place near me were I could trash pick. We have a county recycling facility, but we can't take anything, only drop off.
Bummer
It could make a decent Retro Games DOS/Win9x machine with minimal investment.
This is an amazing find. Congratulations on your two graduates. Now... don't everybody raise their hands and go "Me... me, me,me!" trying to scoop this one up.
Thanks!
Ecky thump! Think of the treasure on that hard drive!
Thanks for the video, I always love PC archaeology.
Me too!
Gongratulations with your doughters. I wish the best with the covid. Nice found. Greetings from Steven from the Netherlands
Thanks 👍
I really like that style of cases. a pity they never show up in my part of the world (Norway)
