Hi, I’m Carey Alvez. I’m an award winning artist who has taught hundreds of students to draw stunning realistic portraits of the people they love.
Many have a desire to draw beautiful, realistic portraits of the people in their life and long to develop the skills of a true artist.
And that’s what I help them to do.
When they see what they’re capable of, they develop an immense amount of confidence in themselves and people around them view them differently. They often hear exclamations of, “Wow! When did you become an artist?!”
On my RUclips channel, you’ll get a taste of techniques I use to teach my students to become incredible artists.

Transform Your Art Studio with Essential Drawing Board Setup Tips!
Why not use a mirror??
An interesting concept, I have only really started on portraiture, but I seem to struggle with likeness. I am going to give it a go, your method.
One of the first things my first drawing teacher at art school said to us was: "Draw what you can't see, then drawing what you do see will sort itself out." She then referred us to the most valuable book I read in art school - The Art of Responsive Drawing by Nathan Goldstein. (It's in it's sixth edition already.) It took a little while, but I got it.
thank you for that, will look them up
"your job is not likeness, your job is the best design possible, the best aechtecture possible" Glen Orbik
Absolutely, we are not machines, learn your craft but be your own creative self
@@careyalvezartschool Carey, I apologize and I will cote him correctly: ""Your Job is not likeness, your job is to make the most dynamite interpretation of the architecture possible - the best design possible." And the list of his cotes in this scenario goes on - and they just get better and better:
"Your Job is not mimicry, your job is to idealize!" The next one is longer but yet, nice: "When you are constructing, having some sort of idea about how to idealize, gives you a lot of amo, from when you are drawing from the model, I mean, I don´t wanna completly "hide" the model, but I do wanna - if I wanna lean in the direction of what is pretier, what´s a better choice, so, have a direction, otherwise all you hope to do it´s copy really well, and copy really well that´s not fun. You wanna be abble to look her and say: " ok, I like this part and this other part is a little funky, how ca I... You know? And if you are drawing and you are not quite sure if the line goes to the left or right, You know? You kind have to think about what´s gonna be a better mistake."
❤thank you so much for sharing ❤
your welcome. I love Rembrandt🥰
❤thank you so much for sharing your skill❤ I adore your advices
thank you, hope it helps
Yes, reference pics are just reference pics. We are not human printers.
so true, really what is the point of just copying, unless its a skill building exercise, personal expression trumps mechanical perfection
@@careyalvezartschool I have been told I am a mood painter. Painting is very much a form of expression for me. Many people also fail to recognise limitations of photography (hence massive use of AI these days). So trying to copy a photo exactly is also trying to be restricted to those same limitations.
This was known as a Claude glass (after Claude Lorrain, French Landscape painter)
Well thank you, I'm not a landscape painter, never really knew where it originated from. I learned it in the atelier I was studying at.
i echo the other commenters, im glad i found your channel. your work is beautiful
Thank you I appreciate the feedback, I hope these tutorials help
I turn my reference upside down You’re right. Suddenly,I’m not drawing a face. I’m seeing an arrangement of shadings, lights, proportions, lines only I see, now, clearly how “off” my drawing was. Problems solved!
Glad this helped, ironically the key to accuracy is to "detach from the thing" and see things objectively, after practicing this it becomes second nature and you can just flip in and out of it.
You have some good videos on your channel, Carey. I am constantly puzzled by social media and its inconsistency as to what is deemed popular and what struggles to ‘get noticed’. As a painter and tutor I see a lot of value in the tutorials I’ve just watched on your channel but only a few have had more than a thousand views so far. I hope it grows as it deserves to. I thought your series on lighting a model/ ref shots etc was excellent and will recommend it to some of my students. Your narratives are also clear and to the point without annoying preamble and that takes a lot of work to achieve.
Thank you very much for that feedback, I really appreciate it. The photo series was a LOT of work , I hope people see the value as well.
For a hand-held version, I bought a magnifying glass from the dollar store, and spray-painted one side of the glass black. It's great for quick checks on my plein-air painting and life drawings.
If it’s painted on one side, how does that make it useful?
@@janetlyn523 it’s like a black mirror, then
That was really helpful. I gotta learn how to remember how to use all those techniques. To unprogram my mind focusing on details too early and get the big shapes first.
I'm Glad it helped. Most people don't know the foundational structure that goes into creating a successful realistic drawing, Everyone wants to go to the finishing details FIRST. This it the way to do it, layer upon layer. Check out this video to see it more in depth: ruclips.net/video/MRvXku_PNro/видео.htmlsi=vRArLKQqddYgsrps best of luck
Wow! I'm so glad youtube recommended your video. You are amazing. I look forward to watching your other videos and learning😊
thank you, and hope these videos help
When I draw portraits, I keep the features of the face with presition. The rest I draw loose.
fantastic, I prefer the tension that is created by the "tight - loose" balance.
Thank you this helps me a lot you explained it very well I get it now it clicks.
Great, It helped me a lot too and I had been drawing a long time before i found someone to teach me this, made a big difference. hope it helps you.
"Art is journey of endless possibilities " Brave noble courageous and true I MUST BE I SHALL BE I WILL BE TRUE Deep deep deep, H E A V Y!
Thanks for that feedback, Appreciate it!
Thank you! This is great!
You're welcome. I remember being taught this and it was areal revelation and made such a difference in my work.
Excellent video, thank you.
No Problem, thanks for the feedback. What sort of art are you interested in?

Absolutely gorgeous but beyond my skills I fear. It's mesmerising to watch. I've recently subscribed so will look forward to more. Thank you.
Skills are learned, I've seen this many times. The key to success is commitment, It's been said you become what you focus on. I You want it, you can do it. you don't have to do the journey alone... check this out careyalvezart.com/mentoring
I love this, do you have any advice on drawing curls without much detail please\/
I'll work on that, thanks for asking. But quickly simply massing in the hair as a value shape and then picking out or erasing the highlights sure beats drawing in every little detail and strand of hair go to this video for a short demo: ruclips.net/video/-a5gSC3tLsE/видео.html
❤
Thanks, appreciate the feedback!
Thank you! That is so clever!
It removes a lot of frustration, best of luck using it
Amazing video, really helpful
thank you, hope this helps, the window technique is really easy and gets the best results
Thank you SO MUCH! Because I’ve had the other features just about right. But every time I try tweaking the mouth, it causes a domino effect & I end up erasing everything & starting from scratch.😖 I’ll gladly try your method. Thank you.❤️
This has really worked for me, it will save your sanity and just know the tweaking and correcting process continues through the duration of the entire work. The secret, work with a light touch so your work can be gently lifted and reworked as necessary. i will do another video that goes deeper into this issue, Best of luck
@@careyalvezartschool Thank you. This really helps me to understand what I should expect. Sometimes I have to remind myself I’m supposed to be enjoying this. 🤣❤️😬
Watercolor paper ?
Stonehenge legion or printmaking paper. Terrific drawing paper
Nice and helpful 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
thanks, I remember learning about this and being really grateful for the difference it made in my own drawing.
Thanks for the lesson .
your welcome. hope it helps
Thank you for great tutorial. I agree with the comment below, everything is very well explained 👍
Thank you for your kind words, they mean a lot to me!
Wow this is amazing advice thank you so much for this❤

A parallel: In situations of survival like in remote areas where help comes only after days, weeks or months, the people who survive are those, who "work" their situation task after task: Find protection against weather, make a fire, find water, etc.
So true, You will notice this all came about during a prolonged period of real stress. It was a healthy coping mechanism but it helping work through many challenges with my art from that point forward. Thanks for your thoughts!
Great advice! Thank you for sharing :)
you are welcome!
Thank you so much. You are reinforcing thoughts that I have had lately. I feel so scattered and anxious trying to tackle several life crises at once and getting nowhere. I need to breath, create and do one thing at a time.
I hope this is something you can apply. It helped me and gave me a safe place to go, just to get lost in my art. Also to draw what was going on inside me. This is pretty common. but it does help. Take care
Thabks i hope you get more attention. This aspect of veing an artist is very important. Not just skill and knowledge
Absolutely, I have often said, "Art is a journey of the mind" your vision & mindset is super important!
Hi Carey, yesterday after I finished painting I made the black mirror, today I used it, it's a tool of create value to the artist. Thank you so much again for answering my question, and for this awesome tutorial on making one. 🙃🎨🖌
Fantastic Raven!. I was filming all day for a Master copy course I am offering and YES I too was using my black mirror quite a bit as accuracy is very important in this case. Great little tool. Please stay tuned, I am recommitting to my RUclips channel so there will be regular new tutorials available. Best of luck with your art journey!
@@careyalvezartschool, thank you! I will ☺check out your courses. :)
I forgot to tell you about what my oil painting instructor talked about using a concave lens if you do not have enough room to walk away from the painting to see it from another view point. He talked about the concave mirror replacing the distance that you do not have. You may already know about that. This is what I bought on Amazon. EISCO Optical Glass Lens, 3" (75mm) - 200mm Focal Length - Ground, Beveled Edges it cost almost $12.00 but well worth it. I already have the black paper and the electrical tape, everything except the picture frames which we will be getting today. So I will get to use it tomorrow, so excited. I will keep you up to date on how it came out. :)
Are you using 1/2 " electrical tape?
Hi Raven, Yes just regular electrical tape. You don't want to break the border with masking tape or another colour.
@@careyalvezartschool, thank you and thank you for this tutorial! I use regular mirror holding it facing my canvas, using the mirror like a review mirror in the car. I will be making one. ☺
best of luck
@@careyalvezartschool, I will give you and update, once I make it and use it, thank you! :)
Hey Raven, just double checked, sorry but the tape is 3/4 inch, my mistake. hope this helps
Great video! Very informative. A bit of constructive criticism; background music is in the foreground causing great distraction.
Thank you Dan, appreciate that feedback. Will change that in the future!
turn off any electronics with a screen! iphone, tablet, etc i’m lazy and her excellent advice is super helpful 🙏
Not only are you a very good artist, but are also a very good instructor. I love how you explain the steps, but also the reason behind the techniques.

؟ How do I draw without a grid
Hi Emad, You work with a set of AXIS lines that cross each other and create a fixed point in the centre of the image. From there you make all of your measurements. Watch this video to see haw its done at the 1min mark ruclips.net/video/31HjlBuT-fs/видео.html Hope this helps
Fabulous! Love the way you demonstrate how to do it with great detail. Your drawing is beautiful! Thank you.
