I have just tried this with my kindle fire with the light turned off. It works perfectly. Thanks for the idea! 😀
two years later, i wrote the same comment before i saw yours 😆 anything with a shiny screen is perfect!
(we’re obvs smart people)
Perfect! This is how someone immersed in a process, any process, can achieve some needed Objectivity. Stepping aside to view things from another angle-we take a holiday then get back to our routines renewed. Been reading up on Self Awareness-having eyes to view ourselves from the outside. Add knowledge and some skills, we go on to make necessary changes the best we can towards a goal. Love this!
Thank you, hope it helps
I hadn't thought of turning the source material upside-down. It makes perfect sense!
Thanks for your feedback, really appreciate it.
I have a lovely friend, an fine artist. She takes a mirror, turn around and views the painting over her shoulders. Works well for her as her paintings show.
I do the same thing, lately I have a big mirror behind me.
Simon05784 Yes, I do that too. It's amazing how we are able to see the painting differently this way.
In this digital age, another way you can do it is to use your phone to take a photo of your work and reference, and then flip it.
What a great idea..thanks
Thanku..
That wont work you will have the same amount of light in that picture
@@fredvandermerwe4331You clearly didn't watch the video.
Or simply flip your paper on the table.
Thank you, Carey. I love it when artist's reveal tricks, techniques, and tips. We tend to bog down, not take breaks, and lose perspective. Thank you, have a good day.😊😊
Thanks for your feedback, really appreciate it. Best of luck with your artwork.
Perfect! I was taught to look at my work either upside down or in a mirror. But I want to try this now. Thank you!
Hope it helps, I use my mirror on a regular basis
Hello from India 🇮🇳.
My niece, a trained fashion designer bt one of the Greatest design institutions of Asia, told me to view my paintings from up side down.
She just won one Gold 🥇 Medal and one national level trophy 🏆as First Prize for her creative design.
This is great! I use a mirror all the time to check my work, especially the composition. Like you said, I become more objective and I see it with fresh eyes. Great tip, love it!
Thanks for your feedback, really appreciate it.
Tablet or cellphone on sleep works too 😊
yup, the age of technology has caught up.
@@careyalvezartschool 😂 👍
@@Write_Charlie imagine, they invented it for this purpose 😂
I often turn things upside down. That detaches you from the subject and helps you see shapes.
Yup, that's the whole point, to help you see things objectively
Thank you for the tip. Will definitely try it. Blessings
Well put, thanks
Love these tips! Thanks!
thanks, glad it helps
Thank you that was very helpful😊
Great demo, thanks!
Thanks for your feedback, really appreciate it.
Object upside down and using my non dominant hand 😂I get interesting drawings bc my brain doesn’t try to make it real. It’s just lines and curves values and colors. ❤ I will now make this darling mirror. I usually do use a mirror to check my work but never could’ve imagined a black mirror for
Drawing or painting. Thank you so much for sharing this trick !! ❤
Thanks for your feedback, really appreciate it. And good luck with all that. Yes using the non dominant hand uses another part of the brain, usually the more emotional side and very interesting things come out. I was shown that method by an art therapist and it helped through a stage of being "stuck"
Awesome, thank you!
Thanks for your feedback, really appreciate it.
I turn the piece upside down when possible. Taking a photo of your work and looking at the photo you will see different things, too. Or take a photo and then put it in an app and flip the photo. It's amazing how different you can see things this way. I really like this idea of the Black Mirror also!
Thanks Lea, Yes it's all about abstracting the image, somehow we need to shift our perceptions, I've used all of the methods you mentioned and yes they all work. Cheers
@@careyalvezartschool Thanks for sharing the black mirror method!
Wonderful tip, thanku very much. Really appreciated ❤
Thanks for your feedback, really appreciate it.
Good video Carey. I just happened to come across your channel. You have some very good content here!
thank you really appreciate that
This was known as a Claude glass (after Claude Lorrain, French Landscape painter)
Well thank you, I'm not a landscape painter, never really knew where it originated from. I learned it in the atelier I was studying at.
I use to teach portrait photography and used the technique of turning a proof up side down when you knew something just wasn't right but you couldn't quite figure out what it was.
I have never seen the black mirror technique but would have used it for sure.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
you are welcome, hope it helps
Good idea
Your Way of doing it was completely new to me, but you are very good at explaining how you do everything. 🙏🎶♥️🎵 … I know all the other ways of seeing my work more clearly using a normal Mirror behind me or just taking a photo but since I mostly paint from memories, dreams, imagination and I use “ the felt sense” of a scenario its not just the visuel but ratherva “ synkinaesthetic felt sense” I use to judge whether its “ vibrational alive” 🙃🎵💜🎶
I love this, I strive to paint in my own personal work the same way, its a feeling, experiential image I'm trying to show, and that is far more important. The mirror is just a handy little tool, easy to make, I have a number of the sitting around the studio easy to grab.
thanks for your feedback
For a hand-held version, I bought a magnifying glass from the dollar store, and spray-painted one side of the glass black. It's great for quick checks on my plein-air painting and life drawings.
If it’s painted on one side, how does that make it useful?
@@janetlyn523 it’s like a black mirror, then
Hi Carey, yesterday after I finished painting I made the black mirror, today I used it, it's a tool of create value to the artist. Thank you so much again for answering my question, and for this awesome tutorial on making one. 🙃🎨🖌
Fantastic Raven!. I was filming all day for a Master copy course I am offering and YES I too was using my black mirror quite a bit as accuracy is very important in this case.
Great little tool.
Please stay tuned, I am recommitting to my RUclips channel so there will be regular new tutorials available.
Best of luck with your art journey!
@@careyalvezartschool, thank you! I will ☺check out your courses. :)
Great idea; thank you!
Thanks for your feedback, really appreciate it.
Your welcome, hope it helps
I’ve always turned my work upside down, it was a tip from an art teacher many, many years ago. But I am going to try this ‘black mirror’ tip out of curiosity. Thanks 👍🏻☺️
I forgot to tell you about what my oil painting instructor talked about using a concave lens if you do not have enough room to walk away from the painting to see it from another view point. He talked about the concave mirror replacing the distance that you do not have. You may already know about that. This is what I bought on Amazon. EISCO Optical Glass Lens, 3" (75mm) - 200mm Focal Length - Ground, Beveled Edges it cost almost $12.00 but well worth it. I already have the black paper and the electrical tape, everything except the picture frames which we will be getting today. So I will get to use it tomorrow, so excited. I will keep you up to date on how it came out. :)
turn off any electronics with a screen! iphone, tablet, etc i’m lazy and her excellent advice is super helpful 🙏
Can't wait to try this! Thanks!
lovely
Great thanks for the feedback
Dear Carey, thank you a lot. I appreciate you advise. My question is - why do we need namely black mirror, not conventional, usual mirror?
Have a good day
That is a good question, what I have found is that a conventional mirror reflects a LOT of light creating a lot of distraction. the black mirror tones everything down, makes it easier to focus and actually reflects colour back very accurately.
I studied at an art Academy. we all had them, never gave it much thought really. It was just a great little tool, simple to make , was as common as a can opener in the kitchen.
@@careyalvezartschool I get it, good gay
Thank you! That is so clever!
It removes a lot of frustration, best of luck using it
謝謝🙏
You are welcome. Thanks for your feedback, really appreciate it.
Thank you.... great advice !!!!
I discovered that by myself, when I had the idea of putting the drawing in front of a mirror, later I saw dozens of people saying the same. And i read also the explantion, it has to do with the brain.
Surely a mirror would to the same thing!
That's true, just passing on what I learned, some version of it creates a very helpful tool. Cheers
this new to me , Thank you for this.
This is very interesting 🧐 I’ll be giving it a try….
I must get back to art
I turn my reference upside down
You’re right.
Suddenly,I’m not drawing a face.
I’m seeing an arrangement of shadings, lights, proportions, lines only
I see, now, clearly how “off” my drawing was.
Problems solved!
Glad this helped, ironically the key to accuracy is to "detach from the thing" and see things objectively, after practicing this it becomes second nature and you can just flip in and out of it.
This was very well explained by Betty Edwards, in her book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain." It's worth a read, and there are exercises to help you turn on "right brain" activity. I had been drawing for many years when I read her book, and was surprised that I had stumbled onto the same techniques she recommended for improving drawing skills. Her book just helped me understand the mental process.
Good video, but could you not have just bought one frame and used the backing board that comes as part of the frame? The mirror doesn't need to be double-sided does it?
Probably not. Your suggestion makes sense.
I am a beginner. I do abstract paintings because I am unable to draw it. It appears child like drawing when I attempt drawing 😮.
Black paint on 1/8" polycarbonate or acrylic works the same and weighs much less.
can we use the cellphone turned off? I will give it a try, because my phone is already stained with paint, ha ha ha. thanks Carey for your insights
I learned this before smartphones existed, never gave it a thought, had the mirrors hanging around already.
the point is the principle of reorienting your perceptions of what you are seeing to gain objectivity .
it just helps you see things better and more accurately.
Are you using 1/2 " electrical tape?
Hi Raven, Yes just regular electrical tape. You don't want to break the border with masking tape or another colour.
@@careyalvezartschool, thank you and thank you for this tutorial! I use regular mirror holding it facing my canvas, using the mirror like a review mirror in the car. I will be making one. ☺
best of luck
@@careyalvezartschool, I will give you and update, once I make it and use it, thank you! :)
Hey Raven, just double checked, sorry but the tape is 3/4 inch, my mistake. hope this helps
Hello from India 🇮🇳, Congrats 😊
Helpful? My lady, you just gave me an atomic bomb of a tool. Thank you.
Your Welcome Martin, Let me know if these tips help
why do you need two pieces of glass? you could use one mirror and cover one side sith black contact paper. Or, put black paper on and back it up with a piece of cardboard. After all you only need one side for the black mirror
That's true, just passing on what I learned, some version of it creates a very helpful tool. Cheers
You show how to make this, it's a mirror. You recommend this as a drawing aid. Ok I've tried it and it's extremely difficult to use. I myst be doing something wrong. Please post a video showing how to use it, one in which you complete a drawing using it.
Yes, Thnaks for that suggestion, I will do that. Just need a bit of time
I dont underantant what a black mirror would do that looking at your work in a regular mirrow cant
👍
Funny this comes up in my feed bc I'm painting a round canvas I stretched last week. 😂 imo, if ur an artist that hasn't used a mirror, u def aren't very imaginative or inventive 😂
She sounds exactly like Martha Stewart the way she speaks they must be from the same place
Nope, not even close. From Canada and a number of places around the world. Sorry😉
@@careyalvezartschool I kept waiting for you to say "it's a good thing" at the end. Lol, very cool vid tho. Will black tissue paper work instead of the construction board?
@@skitzochik Probably as long as its opaque, you can also paint it with black paint
@@careyalvezartschool oh good idea, I actually have some black spray paint...thank you kindly
Why not use a mirror??
some do, but the darker color makes it easier to distinguish from the original
You don t need any stuff for drawing...Only Vocation.practice and sense...never peoples will get to learn. First from the Old master.
