He's not a perfect fit unless he can bat right handed. I know he bats leftie and can't recall if he's a switch hitter. If he is, then he could be great for the Sox, but if he bats only from the left side of the plate,, the Sox have enough of those, they need a big right handed batter who can tattoo that wall regularly!

I think Devers should stay at 3rd base for now. These are only rumors and we won't know what is happening until it happens.

Good content. I have two counterpoints. I think your "face of the franchise" argument underestimates Jarren Duran. Duran, for me, has been the main reason both the 2023 Red Sox and the 2024 Red Sox were interesting to watch. And going by bWAR, he just had a better season than Soto has ever had. He's got 5 tools to Soto's 2. Comparing Soto to the perennially disappointing Devers is the the wrong comparison. As for the history of Dominical players, Soto has said the Red Sox were his favorite team growing up, because of those players. There could be a childhood dream factor at play here, which seems a more powerful pull than just having a history of good players from his homeland. I just wonder if the Red Sox are too stacked in the outfield for Soto to represent much of an improvement over what they already have. But he could be a real improvement over Casas, whose extreme slowness holds him back on both the basepaths and on defense. But is first base is an option for Soto? That possibility has me curious.

I just don’t understand why they waited for their top prospects to be so close to the show to talk about signing Adames and trading for Arenado. Won’t those guys block some of those young prospects?

Dude stop doing this to yourself. He’s never going to be on the team. They are not going to pay him the money the Mets or Yankees will. We need to understand he’s using Boston as a tool to get more money. Probably telling the Mets or Yankees I really like the prospects, Alex Cora, David Ortiz, being the man of Boston. But the Red Sox after all this are going to dish out 650 million dollars + for a guy who is generational once in a lifetime but he plays poor defense? What about Roman Anthony, Kristan Champbell, these guys coming up need a spot to play in the field. Duran we have a loaded outfield. Roman Anthony say what you want about prospects and I get it. Roman hit the hardest hit ball in the entire organization last year. Over Dev, O’Neil, a 20 year old who started the season in AA at 19 years old did that. We don’t need Soto we need pitching

For Red Sox fans who are worried about Arenado’s bat, 2023 all-star on pace for the usually 30HR/100RBIs. He had back issue August from trying to steal a base, played thru for a month plus then IL last 7 games instead of sitting for a couple days. With the back he had no hustle & so it was Single/HR for almost 2 months. 2024 he gets hit by a pitch in the left forearm in April, had some tenderness then week later had a forearm strain played thru it. His swing was changed & having that issue it led to a shoulder strain. For most of the year he played through injury because he needed to since the cardinals had no offense. If the cardinals just 10-15 day IL him, he comes back & isn’t changing his swing to play. I also want to bring up the cardinals past hitting coach Turner Ward, he’s a big make the pitcher work guy, Cardinals took the most 1st pitch strikes in baseball. So Nado went from being aggressive early to almost always taking the first pitch. When the cardinals got to July-August, he was getting FB first pitch down the middle & being behind just killed his power. So you mix injuries with being behind to start counts you hit record low 16 homeruns & 23 doubles. As a Cardinal fan I thought I’d share what I saw & know. Also when the trade is more than you think it should be you aren’t shocked. BTV is way off on -22, he’s owe $21m, 16 & 15, so $52m 3yrs that’s 17.3m AAV. That’s $10m cheaper than Bergman for 1 war less on bad seasons & you don’t have to pay him for 6-7 years.

Blake Snell is a better strikeout pitcher. My concern with Fried isn't Fried it's that he is a ground ball pitcher, and Red Sox defensively have had problems. I would be happy with either. I think they definitely need 2 starters.

Soto seems to care pretty deeply about the future of the team he's signing with. Each meeting he's had with the top brass of teams trying to sign him has included him asking questions about scouting, player development, and the farm systems. The Yankees have only one top 100 prospect and he's already at the major league level, while the Mets have 5 in the top 100 and the Dodgers have 4. The Sox have 6 in the top 100 and 3 in the top 10, I really don't think there's a better option if he really cares that much about development, scouting, and the future potential of his possible teammates.

I’m letting myself get excited for Soto. If the Sox don’t land him, it’s going to be hard to be disappointed because at the end of the day, Soto has to choose the Sox. I always get much more upset when it comes to situations like the Bogaerts one.

  • @christopherb.8465

As much as I'd LOVE the Red Sox to acquire the players you speak of, there's next to no chance they aquire Soto AND Fried AND Crochet. It's not just about having the resources to pull it off but competing against the multiple teams wanting those players as well. It's true Soto's price tag limits his signability to a handful of teams however revenue sharing allows many clubs to offer Fried a market value contract. And a Crochet trade should be contingent on him signing an extension; no guarantee he'd want to or the 2 sides could come to terms on that.

@@fenwayfaithful Sure, but all these teams that are in on Soto are built to contend now and in the future. The Yankees, Mets, Red Sox and Dodgers all have strong major league rosters and minor league systems along with an insane amount of spending power being in huge markets. Even the Blue Jays have the ability to spend big every year to keep a solid roster around Soto if he decided to sign there. Unless he has a preference geographically, I don't see any of these teams having a massive leg up on the others. Should be fun to watch unfold.

I feel like the only reason the Sox might go Full Throttle this year is because the Yankees made it to the World Series. We need the Yankees and the Red Sox at the top of the AL East. That rivalry is the best in baseball (arguably in all of sports) and the money will roll in if we are competing with the Yanks every year. I feel like if we can pull Soto out from under the Yanks, it would be a bit of retaliation for them getting A-Rod out from under us back when that whole mess happened.
