This is right on point. Most of us regular people do not frequent areas or times where the denizens of criminal activity ply their wares. The chances of having a violent encounter are extremely low. If it does happen, it will likely be unexpected and very close. Once the gun is fired, the perpetrator(s) will have a change of priorities. They don’t know it’s “just a .22” and the survival imperative will supersede.

    22. LR would be fine to use as a self defense weapon, however I would only use it in a revolver instead of a semi automatic. The reason behind that is that 22 LR’s or any rim fire ammunition, have a tendency to jam or misfire. That would be real bad in a semi automatic handgun in my opinion.

I carry a Taurus TX22, I practice with it a lot, I can put 3 shots on target, in the same time as most can do 1 accurately, I carry CCI Mini Mags in it when I carry, when I practice, I mostly just use Aguila 38 gr hollow points, it has never jammed, or misfired with either, I has also shot Remington Golden Bullets with no issues, good video, and great common sense instruction

The main argument against using .22 LR for self-defence is its limited "stopping power,", but that name is not the right name for what it means exactly, especially in high-stress situations. If you and an attacker are both armed or the attacker is rushing at you with a blade how quickly you can stop them matters. So, is not stopping power that you blast out their brains all over.. is about preventing them to stab you or to shoot you before you shoot them! With a shotgun, a hit to the hip, belly, or centre mass is likely to incapacitate the attacker, preventing them from continuing their attack, that is the need for stopping power. In contrast, with a .22 LR, the same shot might not be as effective, it hurts like hell to get shot anywhere, your shoulder, your thigh or your chest, but it might not stop you from shooting or stabbing someone if you are upset or obsessed enough to hurt the other person. The .22 LR’s stopping power is less reliable to the possible situations you cannot control, so shot placement, how determined the attacker is and the attacker’s clothing are crucial factors of the attacker will continue to get to you even if shot with a .22 LR, and those factors are just not at all the same if someone is shot anywhere in the body with a shotgun. That said, the .22 LR is a great choice for self-defence in situations where recoil management and handling ease are important, especially under stress. While recoil is not a major issue with the .22 LR, there are many other factors in a self-defence situation beyond just recoil management that we must understand before we choose to go out on the street with any gun in our pocket, the best defence is to not just end up in a situation where you cannot control the outcome anymore.

You are 100% correct. Even according to an ammoland study done on 104 bear attacks it even appears bears are just not that motivated to continue attacking while being shot by a 22lr. I might not carry a 22lr, but then again I have a tiny package.

I got one for you guys. My husband and I were in Las Vegas several years ago and we wanted to go eat at Stratosphere for our anniversary. We rode the Tran as far as it went and then thought we would walk the rest! But, because we are older though we would catch the bus from there. As we were standing there reading which bus to get on, a young man stood next to my husband (with a skateboard in hand) and I felt the need to stand in between them! I just knew as soon as my husband pulled out his wallet to pay for the bus ride the dude was going to grab and go! Don’t miss understand we have been to Las Vegas several times as a matter of fact we got married there in 2012 and had been there way before that. Please be careful and safe and always watch the people around you!

Short answer, absolutely unequivocally NO! Unless, due to physical limitations there no way you can handle the recoil of anything larger. And for the genius who say that the people who bad mouth the .22 wouldn't volunteer to get shot by one. Let me put in to logical perspective, no one would volunteer to get herpes. Herpes won't save your life in a gun fight. .22 might be fine for you, that's great. God help anyone who follows you half baked uninformed ramblings.

Meh. Danny the medic is right. Comparing Herpies to a 22lr is a false equivalency. A submarine and a boeing 747 have more in common. Now if you happened to give someone herpies and they are really really pissed about it, then yeah, you should definitely carry something bigger than a 22lr when they show up. If not, a 22lr will do the job.
