Querying Chronicles #3: querying at GLACIAL speeds, query critique, & computer-induced heart attack
Here we are in mid-July and I've sent out...*checks*...15 queries since January. It's not because I'm slacking off, it's just that dang slow to get responses from agents! So let's chat about what to expect when you start querying.
I also got a critique on my query and synopsis and spent some time revising those before sending out my next batch of queries. I used Kim Chance and her notes were excellent! Definitely recommend checking out her services. I've also used Marina Green in the past for my first chapter critique and her work was great, too, but she was booked pretty far out and I didn't want to wait that long.

Struggling to write when life keeps interrupting • A Writing Vlog • Meredith E. Phillips
Просмотров 521День назад
We all have those days or weeks (or months or years) when making time to write gets tricky. This weekend and the week previous were one of those times! I had a hard time concentrating after work and kept getting interrupted even on the weekend when I should have had hours to mess with this draft. Oh well! It happens. Four days off and nothin' to do...might as well finish my draft two. Ahhh it feels good! Over the July 4th holiday weekend, I finished the last bits of major work needed to wrap up draft 2 of my Regency romance! I had some new scenes to write and some scenes to tweak, but I've got all the pieces in place now. And then on Monday, July 8th, we got to experience our first hurricane! Beryl was on t...

I gotta be honest, the first two weeks of June were not the productive writing weeks I was hoping for. Why not? Well, one week had some ~life~ stuff happening and I had to direct my focus elsewhere. We're excusing that. But what about the other week and a half? Oh, that was just me being lazy AF. And I was tired of it. So I picked up my camera on Monday, June 17th and started vlogging as a way ...

    I used Manuscript Academy for my query and first 10 pages critique, they have a lot of different agents which is great because you can choose someone who rep's your genre. Just know that you can never query any agent who gives you a paid critique, which I wish I had known beforehand. Good luck in the trenches, I'm out here swimming (sinking) too, lol!

    How long did it take for you to finish your 2nd draft start to finish? I've finished first drafts of manuscripts and one story story did a few drafts but never completed from start to finish. What advise do you have to finish from start to finish? I'm starting a new story I am determined to see to the end then query this fall.

    • @MeredithPhillipsWrites
      @MeredithPhillipsWrites 4 дня назад

      I started the reread of draft 1 on May 4th and finished my final bits of revision on July 19th, so a little over two months. My first draft took me a month to finish, but I'd done a lot of outlining beforehand (a couple months worth), so first drafting is always pretty easy for me. Next, I'll wait for my CPs to finish reading and then I'll jump into a draft 3 using their feedback to revise more. Then maybe an alpha reader? Then more revising with those notes. Then beta readers, then more revising...lol it never ends!! Well, it _does_ end, but for me the whole process takes basically a year. Take your time with revisions and rewriting! In terms of keeping up the motivation and stamina to get to the end, part of it is internal. I really love my stories and I really want to be able to get them into the hands of readers. The other part is external. Honestly, all the video creation and vlogging help, haha! If I'm not writing, I have nothing to film, thus no content to post. So I have to keep working if I want to keep posting. If you don't like posting on social media, try to find an accountability partner or another writer friend who can help push you along when you start losing steam. Good luck!! I hope you can finish your new project to your satisfaction 🥰

    I'm very active on IG with the commenting and liking peoples' posts, but I hate posting about myself. My life just isn't interesting! And even though I'm writing a couple books, I've posted two things about one of them and they barely got any likes (which really doesn't matter, but if I want to attempt to get readers, it'd be nice to get a little more traction). • @76kilosofshade81
    @76kilosofshade81 14 дней назад

    I don't care for an info dump if it repeats a lot of the info the reader already knows, especially when it's a monologue. Real people don't talk like that, usually. But I definitely support a conversation where the "dumping character" is filling in the spaces of what the MC and/or reader don't know and they're doing it in a creative way, i.e. not just sitting in the library. Having the conversation during a scene of action/movement is more likely to keep me interested. And as soon as a paragraph covers 1/2+ of a page without breaks, my interest wanes....Congrats on finishing draft 2!

    To answer your alcohol question: a few months of reduced drinking wouldn't do much if anything to a heavy drinker's tolerance level. It would have to be a longer period to take effect or they'd have to completely quit since the more you drink, the higher your tolerance. Not having a drop for 2-3 months would definitely be enough to lower someone's tolerance but there are other factors at play such as: the alcoholic content of the drink, how much food someone has in their stomach to soak it up, how fast they drink it and even their genetics. Also, some alcohols sit differently with different people. I don't know what you need narratively but there are lots of things to play with to get what you want. I don't write or even read in your genre but your vlogs are very cozy and relaxing, so thank you. Sending love to all your fur babies.

    Just found your channel and I am enjoying it :-) I write nonfiction am in the midst of one right now and I'm at 100,000 words so editing coming up soon. I really like the mechanism that holds up your computer monitor and I'm wondering if you could link to it. I didn't see in the links that you included, but I did Link to and I'm buying the touch desk lamp.

      Thanks! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos 😊 The monitor stand was originally from Wayfair, but I don't see that they carry it anymore and I can't find it anywhere else for sale. The closest I can find is this one on Amazon: amzn.to/4eOXiYN, but I can't vouch for sturdiness or anything else since mine is a different brand. If you get the lamp, I hope you like it! It's a nice little desk light and it has a USB port on the back, which is handy when I need to charge my keyboard and mouse.

    Have you ever tried to ask "weird" questions (like the champagne question) on Reddit?? I was surprised at the WEALTH of info on there, from folks who are very well versed in all kinds of history, about decidedly ARCANE subjects. I was able to ask a question about how the stairs were constructed in ancient Roman apartments, and I got serious, good-sounding replies that were helpful. Just a thought.

    Great job on all your progress last week! I relate to the pet care side of your content so hard. I have 2 dogs and 4 cats, and 2 of said kitties are special needs. The most relatable lines in this video, "Oh, wait! What was that noise?" and "Go to sleep!" 😆

    Scrivener tip! Highly recommend using the Snapshot function to save an earlier version of a scene or chapter. Apparently the shortcut on Mac is command-5 but I normally just use the little camera icon in the inspector tab where you can add notes. You can also compare versions, restore etc, it’s fantastic!
