  • I said I would make a video on how to revise a novel and here she is! I'm absolutely not trying to position myself as any kind of expert or professional, I'm just sharing my revision process, what I've learned in trying to revise 10+ novels, how I have my Scrivener document set up, and potential problems you might find within your own plot or characters.
I hope this is helpful! Please let me know if you have other questions, want more of an explanation of something I mentioned, or have any other tips, tricks, or suggestions for how to tackle revising a novel.
Here are ALL the resources (videos, blog posts, craft books) I mentioned in the video. I'd definitely recommend checking them out for additional insight!

    "Research canes"
I love how detailed your notes are!!!
I'm with you - I have never truly managed to separate things out...closest I've got is making a change that needs to propogate through a book (one of my characters was Italian and I needed to make him Scottish), so I go through looking for all of those moments!
This video is AWESOME - such a motivating one to watch too. I'm so close to finishing the first draft of my Christmas shenanigans...and then I'll be up to my ears in dev edits for my YA heist - and self edits for the Christmas. You're making me excited to get theree!

LOL I doubt so many of the details I add and then I'm looking up ridiculous stuff like "what kinds of walking canes did people have in Regency England?" like, NO ONE CARES, MEREDITH 😅
Thanks for watching! I know you'll crush the revisions for your (now-famous) heist novel haha

Thank you Meredith! I really liked your point about how every scene needs a goal, a motivation, a conflict and a stake. A great reminder!!

Thanks for watching!! And yes, I have to constantly remind myself about those four key things, which seem relatively simple, but it's so easy to let them fall by the wayside.

Very thorough, WOW! Still pantsing my way through the 1st edit, but I DID put together an outline of sorts so I would remember what-went-where. I literally had forgotten all kinds of stuff from the beginning of the story when I went back to it for the first time. Also, I made separate Word docs for "Deletes" for each Part in the book -- took stuff out, but threw it in "Deletes" in case I decided I needed it after all. Now I am editing Part 3, but ADDING MORE THINGS, so now I'm thinking instead of four Parts, it will have to be FIVE Parts, because Part 3 all by itself is 45K+ words. Haha, a lot happens in that Part! 😁 Another funny: Dad read Parts 1 & 2 and said they were "fine." He also told me I had to cut a lot of the Latin words for stuff -- too confusing. Maybe it's just him?? 🤣 No, he's probably right! But THANK YOU for all these great tips and ideas, because I am still amazed I've gotten even this far, and your advice is helping me to manage/handle it.

hahaha your book is probably the first fiction work he's read since high school, so "fine" seems like a decent assessment 😂
Glad the video was helpful! There's definitely a lot to keep track of during revisions.
