Why do Art Teachers HATE Anime and Fan Art?
Hiya, I’m Iiji, an art educator, and today I wanna talk about why Art Teachers are so anti-anime and anti-fan art based on my observations in the US Education System.
And before you get worried, "Art Teachers" in this circumstance, DOESN'T INCLUDE ME. I often say that my colleagues get under my skin more than my students do, and this is certainly one of those cases, but I can't go putting them on the thumbnail, now can I.
There are some subjective arguments about "Oh it teaches bad habits!" that I haven't included here because frankly, you can and will learn bad art habits from any style, not just anime. If you've had rough experiences with art teachers related to these subjects, you're wel...

My art teachers hated i did anime, but they also know i had a slick mouth when it came to me defending my art. Highschool in 2010 was fun. Example, had an art teacher say that i didnt come up with the concept of a character that was literally all mine, and that because it was in anime style that im not a serious artist, all i said was "don't care, it makes me happy"

Tbh this ain't just an art thing, many surfers will reject the idea of foiling as somehow inferior, loads of mountain bikers do the same when it comes to e bikes, electric cars are still scoffed at at meet ups. My professors in Uni were all very accepting and encouraging when it came to composing edm, drill and whatever musical styles we liked yet my friends and coworkers in more established places raise an eyebrow at a mere mention of dubstep country music. Even now working on the high seas there are sailors who will judge you just for having a junk rig for the exact reasons you highlight in the video.

I remember as not so good taking critique kid, I once done art of some anime i watched at a time and it was freaking great, i still have it and for 10 year old it was damn good drawing compered to anyone in my class. And teacher literally gave me a D just because. When i asked why she did she couldn't even give me good answer. So after that i did as i was asked and did "what is real art" but i especially did damn bad, and i mean like 3 year old drawings. Suddenly i was pulled over and criticized for doing it out of spite. I said if my art won't be judged fairly and she can't even give me good reason for a D, im not putting effort. Im 21 now and now draw not too much as whole life i was put down for drawing what i like and not do realism. But once i sit and find strenth to draw, i love it still. Just i feel..bad taste in my mouth after so many years of unfairness. Also it's not just US, i grew up and live in Poland and teachers also "hate" anime/cartoon/ect. I heard from my younger neighbor it unfortunately didn't change as she draw fanart of character from Stardew Valley and also got an D without reason once again.

I avoid art schools like fire, because I'm 100% sure they'd simply kill my passion for drawing. I don't like being told what to do, I like to learn at my own pace. Like, I'm sure art schools teach a lot of important stuff you must learn sooner or later anyway if you want to become good, but I just hate the idea of having to learn specific things when I don't feel like it's important to me at the exact moment. When I learn on my own, i notice my mistakes and I gradually discover all that needs to be learnt, in such an order that makes logical sense to me. Only then I feel like I'm really learning, because I know why I learn this and why it's useful and what mistakes it will help me to avoid in the future. Otherwise, if you teach me things I don't see a purpose for at the moment, I won't care much and won't remember much.

When I was in collage the art teacher I had was okay with anime artstyles. However the students that did anime artstyles tended to be the shittiest students. Like using anime as a historic artstyle because "you don't have to draw realistic looking people", or just tracing panels from a manga and saying it is their own creation. It was really sad that their "anime is the best artstyle in the world" rubbed of on some students, like drawing a character in a realistic or god forbid western artstyle would get you bullied in class critique.

I've had a few high school art teachers who told me to stop drawing anime cause it wasn't real art.. Fast forward to now and thankfully, I have been able to draw anime art in my art course without much judgement! Everyone is nice to me when it comes down to my anime art. However, if I do have to paint fruit or try out drawing something else, I don't mind! I really love learning all these different art mediums, painting techniques, and even print making so even though I'm not doing anime art all the time in class, it's still a wonderful environment to be apart. The teachers really make or break the art course/school experience tbh. I just got lucky with my teachers! Lol If you're reading this, don't give up on anime art! As long as you enjoy what you do, that's all that matters! 💖

I took a drawing class once and I was discouraged from anime for an understandable reason (shockingly)! There was a session where we had to do a self portrait for the class this time. The reason I was told no was because I showed the professor anime art as an example of what I normally drew. She wanted realistic artwork for the portrait, no stylization anatomically. I understood that, and I did in fact tell her that I knew, and the reason I showed her the art in the first place came from the intent to tell her "don't expect me to do a good job on this." I did a good job though, surprisingly, I just lacked confidence. You can tell why I thought this was reasonable. The professor wasn't being an orientalist Disney adult here, she wanted everyone drawing realistic artwork as a whole! This was a common occurrence for art oriented professors though, they wanted everyone do have realistic stuff in portfolios (though i personally prefer a diverse style range over mainly realism). P.S. I wanted to add that I was able to do some stylization in the class in the context of still-lifes, which were the focus of the majority of our drawing sessions. This was the only session where we drew people, and I'm pretty certain it was specific to that session.

Honestly the anime and cartoon art can just be out of place and corny sometimes, In school you’re learning basics and fundamentals for you to apply to your art outside of class. Why are you in life drawing/painting trying to draw anime protagonists and Donald Duck?

Art is art it is subjective but the problem with of art teachers if they dont really give great creative critism. Sure anime is a popular thing now it used to be niche. What the problem is when people art educators are is the same with art appreciators they tend of smell their own farts and belittle something people like. Art critics tend to be full of shit if something you like doing by all means improve on it.

I haven't been to school in over a decade, but even when I was in middle school and high-school as well, all my art teachers even up to A.P art encouraged my art style. Especially my middle school art teacher, he didnt know what anime was and i showed him and I'll never forget his words almost 16 years later. "If its what you like and you WANT to do it then by all means go for it!" I poured my all into that project and still got a good grade regardless of it being anime. That man singlehandedly encouraged me to continue in that artstyle and i still have been practicing it and doing my best to improve to this day. Honestly we need more teachers like that in western schools. I was very blessed with his input on my work whrn I was a young teenager. 😊

I genuinely think it's just something they don't like from a culture they don't understand being popular, and are just too lazy, ignorant and bigoted to EVEN TRY and understand it. Reminds me of the war on Harry Potter, Magic the Gathering and Pokémon (no I am NOT kidding with that last one) beibg seen as being demon worship.

When i was in middle school, i think it was like 5th grade, there was an older student who was a really great artist who draw in the anime style, think digi charat cute style. I was just starting to draw stuff like dragon ball z and like gundam wing style and was really proud of my work. The art teacher i had saw my drawings and compared it to the other student, not in a positive way, and it discouraged and/or pissed me off so much that i stopped drawing for a while. I picked drawing up again later, still with the anime style, but man, that teacher was really kinda shit thinking back on it. :/

the only thing I dislike about this video is a lack of recognition for individuals who go to art schools irresponsibly because they like anime. think its easy and that they won't be criticized for having a crayola made portfolio of full metal alchemist fanart like thats going to help them make it in the anime industry. it creates a negative stigma to see so many immature artist flood the scene. it's not always racism, plenty of RUclipsrs can't stop talking about industry, the skills you HAVE TO HAVE. fzd school can hardly hide his poor interactions of people drawing anime girls and hes asian. there's not much space for fun in academia.

I have a cartoon and anime influenced art style. I would struggle in my art classes in school (MS and HS) since my art style and the skills/style I’ve practiced wouldn’t translate into those other styles I would be required to make my art assignments off of. We’d have to replicate Greek or Egyptian art (for example) and I’d always have a hard time making something I liked because my art skills weren’t tailored for it.

I have no issue with anime styles but in education I always recommend them learning from real life than looking at art. Usually the people I see who idolize anime or cartoon styles often copy stylization without a background on fundamentals that make their work lopsided. It's like a copy of a copy, every degree of separation removes some nuance on why those decisions were made. Again I have nothing against it as a style. I've seen incredible work in anime styles, and my personal artwork is just an amalgamation of art I enjoy. I just seen so many cases of people hitting a wall, of why can't I get better at this. And it's usually because they lacked the skills that the anime style didn't teach them.

Anatomy, its fucking anatomy. Drawing anime tends to instill some very bad habit to break, such as making fucked up anatomical drawings, remember the early 2000s animes with characters who have a triangle chin and their mouths pasted at the side of their cheeks. I hate drawing anatomy I always fuck up the anatomical proportions, its like I'm drawing Titans from Shingeki no Kyojin. Dafuq you mean my model of the Muscular system looks like its about to start the rumbling? I'm sure someone out there have very long arms and necks that are such a contrast with their short torso and lower body, he's just a bit skinny.
