But then again, I always thought driving was kind of scary too; even mowing my lawn is scary with all the steep hills and trees around here. Heck, even staying in bed all day is scary, I fell out of a tall bed and hit my head once, and another time, a headboard full of nails fell on me in a hotel bed. Come to think of it, just about everything in life is a little scary, but still I carry on. And yes, landing safely is always on my mind every time I take to the skies.

    So just curious. How do you check to see if the controls are free and correct when you have no way to see if they are? The PA28 140 has no rear window and no rearview mirrors so how would you know if the elevator was rigged wrong? This could apply to many if not most orther aircraft too. Unless you have an outside pair of eyes, who would know?

    • @tonytheflyer
      @tonytheflyer 3 года назад

      Actually, you can just see the tips of stabilator from the cockpit out the side windows. The only control surface you can't see from the cockpit of a Cherokee is the rudder and since the nose wheel is directly connected to the rudder pedals (as opposed to the "bungee" configuration as used in Cessna's) you can't really move the rudder on the ground unless you're moving so you wouldn't really be able to check it anyway.

    Is it possible to join the civil air patrol to just be a pilot? Does the CAP have a cadet group and a pilot group and each group does their own thing?

    • @tonytheflyer
      @tonytheflyer 4 года назад

      Hi SPLATS, absolutely, I know several members (including myself) who pretty much just fly, though participating in other actives is generally preferred and appreciated. I used to participate in ground team activities before I became a qualified Pilot, and manage our squadron's aircraft, but these days I mostly fly and instruct. On occasion I've give presentations usually as a part of instructing (a few months ago I hosted a Zoom G1000 training session), sometimes I release sorties (flights) as a Flight Release Officer and sometimes I review other Pilots sorties to verify all the right boxes are checked, but that's all stuff I've volunteered to do. Usually we meet together for the first half hour or so, then we split up into a Senior group (18+), and a Cadet group (12-17) for the rest of the meeting unless the command staff decides they need to cover something that applies to everyone which is rare, but what happens during meetings also varies from squadron to squadron. Some squadrons are Senior only, some are Cadet only, my local squadron is a Composite squadron (both Senior and Cadet). The best advice I give to anyone interested in CAP is to find your local squadron and go visit them during a meeting (or two) to see if it's right for you.

I found that when I dropped the gear, those big front gear doors acted a bit like a weather vane and would make my cross wind landings look like a high time ATP rated pilot. On those occasions when weather was marginal, could wallow around following the roads in a nice slow and responsive plane. The only plane I flew that I loved more was the cessna 206. Hope you keep enjoying flying. I have stopped flying over the last few years to engage in my other love which is racing (GT 4, GT3, and prototypes). Only so much money. LOL. Don

      @@donwilsonm.d.6621 Nice! We looked at a TR182 before we bought the R182 we have now but my mechanic suggested the added expense of a turbo is unnecessary for flying in the central USA, though there are some flights I wish I had a turbo. The mountains I often navigate around where I’m at are ever changing and generally come in various shades of gray or white as cotton. A month ago, I ended up at 14k trying to top some weather and even then I had to weave in and out of some “cloud canyons.” It actually ended up being a lot of fun! I have also noticed crosswind landings are not much of a problem in the R182. I've flown many times with 25-30 knot quartering and direct crosswinds and I always feel like I was expecting the landing to be much more challenging than it actually was. Stay safe with this COVID pandemic and thank you for your service as a Doctor in these difficult times. My Dad is also a Doctor and he hasn't been home for weeks.

      @@tonytheflyer Too bad about the turbo - it is a really simple turbo and a carbureted Lycoming. The turbo produced enough heat that I do not think I ever even thought of carb icing. The only think I did was really watch my temps and spent time doing so coming out of altitude and then allowed several minutes at idle when landed to cool the turbo. One of the things I did was maintain some throttle when I dropped the gear early - you get a big blast of cool air up through those front gear doors when they opened. I was always suspicious that a low power setting and opening those doors on a cold day could shock the engine a bit. Old bush pilot friend of mine made that suggestion and never had an issue in over 700 hours. We are staying safe up here with SARS - Cov2 and it is a challenge. Hats off to your dad (say hi from up here) and be very careful. Unfortunately this is a long haul issue and we have been agitating government since February - with no one really listening. I guess you would be socially isolated at 10000 feet just looking around LOL. My wife told me that I am in full PPE and socially isolated in my fire suit and helmet (visor down) on the track.

      @@donwilsonm.d.6621 The TR182 is turbo normalized (32” MAP redline) right? I have always thought turbo normalized engines were better on maintenance than ground boosted engines cause the engine never produces more power than a normally aspirated was designed to produce at sea level but again, according to my mechanic he said turbo normalized engines still get too hot. Regardless, I still love the R182 we have now. We sometimes talk about maybe upgrading to a twin as I just got my multi rating last year but I’m not quite ready to part with this plane yet. I'll tell my Dad you said hi! Luckily he works in more rural areas so he hasn’t seen many cases so far but I think it's starting to pick up everywhere now. He’s been isolating himself from my Mom and I just to be safe and we’ve been staying home as much as possible. I did go out last weekend to fly solo. The airport was IFR so nobody else was out there, very easy to social distance when you’re the only one there ;-) I went up and got some actual instrument practice to help maintain some level of proficiency and enjoyed the sunshine on top. But I hope that a new or student pilot that wonders on your site (as I did) understands what they see and hear "should" raise the red flag as to the safety and also the knowledge of the guy sitting next to ya. I did watch the rest of the video and I heard you ask, So, are you going for your CFI? He replies yes, and continues into some landing suggestions (note - not instructions since not a CFI). Okay NTSB report says : PP Tony acting as PIC in Piper140, low or zero time in AC flying with his buddy PP Frank sitting in right seat and has many hours in type as well as others.... but not a certified flight instructor, blah blah blah. Cause of crash is PILOT ERROR. And by your seating position.... well.... you own that (But all you wanted was some flight time in a piper.). That's all Tony, just wanted others to understand and learn to listen to that "gut feeling" when and if they ever experience this. Oh, and I also recall a saying.... there are old pilots, There are bold pilots, but there are NO OLD BOLD PILOTS. Peace Brother and blue sky's. Scott. P.S. It's not Agg Assault - more like simple battery. After reviewing the video, i THINK ANY Jury would find it justifiable . Judged by 12 - carried by 6. ✌️

Oh OK... and then you asked what is the rotation speed and he says "at the bottom of the white arch 58 - 60. Vy is stated at 70... but let's go at 75 because of the winds. Off you go down the runway and rotate at 60 and the plane settles back down on the runway and he says something like oh, we settled back down. Pitch for 85. I FORGOT this is in MPH. HOLY CRAP, Get out the checklist and pray to God it's not one he made... and get that thing on the ground, park at the FBO or anywhere that's safe ! Ask to get out and when on the ground, PUNCH HIM IN THE FACE. This guy just tried to kill you ! I completely tuned out of your remaining flight and waited for the crash to occur. Whoa man, chill out! Are you suggesting I commit aggravated assault? We're talking about a Piper Cherokee 140 here, not a Boeing 747. I don't think any pilot who fly's multiple aircraft regularly can honestly say they never get numbers mixed up and there's more to flying than just flying the numbers. And I've witnessed (and flown) a whole lot more questionably maintained aircraft fly safely. Someone told me a story once: If a pilot says to a skydiver "why would you jump out of a perfectly good airplane?" the mechanic overhearing the conversation speaks up and says "there's no such thing as a perfectly good airplane. There's always something that's broke or about to break." We can't all live in a perfect world. Last I checked that guy and plane are still flying safely. I do hope they got that fuel tank fixed at the next annual.

      Airplanegeek if you see he actually asks “how much flaps” after applying one notch and the gentleman says “ ah that’s fine, it doesn’t matter” 😊

    Is CAP a good way to build flight hours? Just a few hours shy of my private and considering volunteering as a pilot when I do get it, if able.

      It can be depending on whats available in your area. For example, if there's a squadron near you that has a C172 you can join and pass a CAP checkride and fly it kinda like a flying club except you can't fly non-CAP passengers. If all they have is a C182 you'll need 100 hours before you can fly it. Self funded flying in CAP is usually cheaper than a rental and CAP instructors aren't allowed to charge for their instruction however to fly funded missions "ie. free to you flying" you need 100 hours PIC and 50 hours X/C minimum to qualify for Transport Mission Pilot (TMP). Once you have TMP you can fly aircraft to/from maintenance and missions and also fly communications missions but not a search for disaster relief (SAR/DR) missions. For that you need 200 hours PIC and specific training in SAR/DR operations to become a SAR/DR Mission Pilot. Once you have 200 hours PIC you can also fly cadets on orientation flights. Like everything that's good there's pros and cons but my suggestion would be to find a squadron near you and go visit them and check it out for yourself. Visitors are always welcome at CAP meetings. Fly safe (and fun!) and good luck on your Private checkride!

      They are great planes. I have the privilege of owning a 182 RG myself now and I love it! Just wish my mechanic would cut my maintenance bill in half ;-)

    Ya think you might wanna touch the brakes before you raise the gear...just a little finesse that you missed.

      How do you know I didn't? I started learning to fly in a 1977 C172 and every time we took off the wheels would shake and rattle as they slowed down so I learned early on to tap the brakes just after lift off. Thanks for the comment John! Fly safe and have fun!

      You too bubba. My instructor was an old ATP that had flown since his days in corsairs in WWII. He'd elbow me if I missed something unless I told him I was doing it on purpose.

    I went to basic training and AIT at Fort Leonard Wood and every Friday we would run on the trail that runs right before the threshold of Runway 32. Also found it interesting that you included the water tower with the beacon on top. That's where we would run to before heading back to the barracks. Love aviation and I'm glad to see there's videos of KTBN.

    The Wikipedia entry on the Anderson-Greenwood says it was designed by 3 people: Anderson, Greenwood and Slaughter. They decided not to use the 3rd name, because it probably wouldn't have been good for sales.

      That's very interesting. Slaughter is probably only a good name to advertise if you're like a butcher or maybe an assassin or something ;-)
