Where are you located?
I’m located in Ontario, Canada. Why what’s up?
@growingwithsimon I like your automation setup. In the process of setting up a large-scale operation as an additional company in our investment portfolio here in CO. Trying to perfect a similar automation ourselves.
That’s awesome, what’s your email. I can send you list of the stuff I use. I will also be making a video of my version 2 with minor tweaks, had issues with some crops being still damp at harvest. Fixed that issue. Works perfectly!!
which timer are you using to control the watering?
It should be in the video description.
How much weight do you put on the stacked 4 trays
I put 3 small bricks. I believe their 5lbs each
Great video thank you, what is the temperature and the humidity level of your grow rack ? please
Humidity 48-54% temp is 70-74F
this is amazing, you got an eye for workflow improvement and on top of that the creative ability to built your own solutions
Thank for the comments, workflow is important, especially with the microgreens. It’s very labour intensive and if you can save time, it makes things soo much smoother.
Hey Simon, ever thought off the automatic harvester, cost only 1k? whats your thought on this?
I did consider it, however right now harvesting doesn’t take that much time. Maybe if I get to 100 flats a week.
do you use fertilizer and if not, have you tested it if it increases yield? jonah etc. are all saying the 4-4-4 fertilizer is increasinflg yield and flavour..
I use the organic Gaia 4-4-4 fertilizer. I’ll be making a video on how I mix the soil with my cement mixer. It’s a few extra steps and well worth it
how come you dont have more subs. i watched so many vids last weeks and i find your channel the best, seriously.
Hey, I appreciate all the support. It’s a fairly new channel and I only content create on my free time. I’m extremely busy in the summer so mostly have the free time in the winter months.
nice set up bro! the way you approach this is how I would want it. what wize in sqm is your garage? it looks huge. and all the investments you made, whats the payback period you think, based on your own growth assumptions? i can rent 75sqm for 650 euro per month. wonder if thats a smart thing to do
Tells me when and what to use. The reason i like advanced nutrients
I use the masterblend tomato for all the plants that flower into veggies and I use the lettuce formula for leafy greens
Where do you source your seeds from? I never thought about it before learning about microgreens, but that's a lot of seed! Especially if you're in constant production. Thanks!
All the seeds are from Mumms Sprouting
This is great. I'm looking in to starting a small micro green business. If you don't mind me asking here, otherwise I can send an email, on a weight basis how much do you produce per week or production cycle of each variety you grow? Is this venture your main source of income? Thanks!
This venture is not my main source of income, i have a seasonal business. I only do this 1 full day a week and a couple hrs a night.
Wonderful setup How do you manage or clean the potential debris that could clog the ebb and flow system?
No debris goes inside the pipes. I clean the flood tables weekly and do a deep clean of the entire system once a month. I put sanitizer in the water reservoirs and run it for 5 mins.
Can this method be used for other seeds
Absolutely! We grow all kinds of stuff in there. Cucumber, tomatoes, lettuce, swiss chard.
Are there ideal grow conditions? Temperature and humidity? Are microgreens like many other plants and thrive under a certain bandwidth of light?
Yes their is, the hotter the faster they will grow however your more prone to mold. Under 68-70F doesnt grow fast enough. I keep mine at around 70-74F and humidity at 48-53%. For my AC I use this plug amzn.to/3xkNTa4 so I can have a buffer. Turn on when above 73.5F turn off when its a 70.5F. For my humidity, I use amzn.to/4agbLdD, same thing turn on when above 53% and turn off when 48% humidity. Also want to have at less 2 fans blowing the air around. I use amzn.to/4agbLdD. As for lights a lot of people use these amzn.to/49s3CS3, their cheap and they work.
@@growingwithsimon Thanks Simon~
You welcome, if you have any other questions don’t hesitate to ask!!
Thank U Simon
Thanks for the information! I am a fan of DWC with aeration (indoors) and Kratky tubs (outdoors). Neither of these is "fix it and forget it" due to the extreme heat in the summer months in central Texas. Any recommendations?
Hey @GrowingwithGlenna For the gutter grow system, you just need to make sure the soil stays damp. You can either use some wick cord (amzn.to/3J5aj1I) to increase the wickining inside your bucket or put some hydroponic clay pebbles on top to prevent evaporation (amzn.to/3xqpJv0)
@@growingwithsimon Thanks for the advice!
Thank you for your videos and great information! I really like the reusable containers you use! I contacted dollarama, and they refuse to sell and ship to the United States, nor are they willing to tell me who their supplier is. I’ve looked everywhere I can think if and can’t find the supplier. Can you let me who the manufacturer is? Thanks!
Hey @waterdog4433 The company is Plastico. While they are cheap, I do get at less 1-2 broken lid per week when we fill 120 containers. I still have tons!! of money with these containers. Have a look at these, might be able to find these in the US. While they are more expensive, I asked for a 20$ deposit to help with the cost, and i feel like these one wont brake on you. amzn.to/43M2qYx
It looks like my last comment was deleted. Sor far I’ve had no success in finding out how get these. When I tried to you use your link in AMZ account, it shows them as not available. It looks like CA and US are not linked very well in AMZ. Can you post a close up of the main container label. I tried to find the company but their site has that they changed their name in 2020 and I don’t see that item on their website. I’m guessing they are having a different manufacturer make them, but are still using their old name. I did find something similar but at over $4.00 each instead of the $1.78 you’re paying. Thanks!
@waterdog4433 not sure why your last comment was deleted, however if I would do it again. I wouldnt use the snap lids. Their a pain in the butt to clean and they snaps brake (on the cheap ones) As long as their 850ml you should work. It fits 60g broccoli and radish and 100g peas and sunflowers.
Thank you man. I was literally thinking about building the same thing with a spinning pressure washer from harbor freight but having the whole thing over a sink is next level genius lol. With the sanitizer soak right after. Great stuff! glad I came across this video before I tried building my own. Best of luck with your Microgreens business!
Hey man, Glad you enjoyed the video. Im building this business as automated as I can. Did you see my auto watering video. Makes thing so much easier. No more weekend at home watering!!
Yeah could you please show a little more detail on how you made it and how it went together your assembly thank you
I’ll make a new video when I build version 2. I already have a better idea. But till than you just have to frame around the circular floor scrubber using the same holes and bolts that the wheels were attached to. From there 4 vertical legs attached to base.
you gotta block the holes that allow ANY spray / mist coming up into the face. just add 1 layer of a sheet of metal over the box u built that covers the round power washer base.. your bottom plate that fits into the sink needs to have multiple holes to change size as many sinks have different size sink bays... your screws/bolts you should use flat round top bolts Dome Bolts or carriage bolts or a flat socket bolt. can we see a video of you using it with old dried on roots as those trays are clean.\
The mist comes from behind and in front of the cleaner because the bottom is open and the mist shoots back up. I’m holding that if I do a full bottom and only drill a few holes to let the water out it till prevent that from happening. Also the bottom plate will be a full sheet so won’t have any screws in the way. I’ll make a quick video of it taking off the roots from the sunflowers.
@@growingwithsimon please do.
Instead of hydroton, use a 1.5" chunk of pool noodle. Neat video!
That’s a very good idea, I’ll have to give that a try.
Hey Simon, do you have a link or brand name for the containers? Thanks in advance
Hey Louis, Here is the link to the containers I use. Not sure if these specific ones are available in the USA. www.dollarama.com/en-ca/p-4-way-lock-food-container-assorted-colours/1000898 At less you have an idea of what I use. Also remember that would will need double the containers. Half of them will out at your clients house and the other half will get filled up with fresh during your harvest day ready to be delivered. Unfortunately you can’t find these on Amazon, they sell them in a variety pack with all different sizes :(
@@growingwithsimon great thx! Looked around and seems like just clip on lids are a bit cheaper in my area. I'm just starting out now and quite excited to jump from the farmers market next to my house to automated deliveries. The container system is very smart as I feel like my target group is also plastic waste conscious and this pretty much solves it. How much are you pricing your 100 gr's if I may ask Cheers !
@louisboon5656 The broccoli, radish are 60g and Pea, Sunflower are 100g. They are 6$ for non-subscription in clamshell and 5$ for subscription in reusable container. (Min 4 pack) I also asked for a 20$ deposit on 1st order to help with cost of containers and they get the deposit back once they cancel and you get them back.
@@growingwithsimon amazing, thanks a lot !! Looking forward to new videos as I love the the structured approach you have towards creating a smooth machine 🙌 Cheers !!
thanks for posting videos. I have a few cup holders without plants in them. Will cover with cardboard tonight so they don't grow algae. So easy and yet necessary Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed the video, if you start having algae it’s nasty to clean. As long as no light is in contact with nutrient water you’ll be fine.
Great Video and Info! Can you let me know what your seeding rates are? Thanks! :)
Hey @HarvestGreenFarms My speckled pea is 250g, sunflower 125g, daikon radish 30g and broccoli 20g
Thanks for the great video! I'm new to growing microgreens. My sunflower microgreens are only reaching about 2-3 inches tall by harvest day (around 12 days). Any tips on how to encourage taller growth like yours? Thanks in advance!
How many light do you have and what’s the light on light off schedule?
I"m using 3x Barrina T5 shop lights from 10am to 2am (16hrs), using 1020 tray, temp: ~71F, humi: ~45%, 100g black oil seeds from mumm's, soak for 3 days, no black-out, light for 7-9 days@@growingwithsimon
@imprinceon you might have too much light. Try only using 2x T5. If your microgreens aren’t getting taller it’s because there is too much light and if you don’t give enough they will over stretch. Maybe do 12 on 12 off with 3x lights, you’ll also have money on hydro.
I'll try that! Thanks for the advise Simon!@@growingwithsimon
@imprinceon keep me posted on how your next grow turns out.
"PromoSM"
which sprayer do you use to water the trays. I have one i purchased and the mist setting is to strong
Hi @MicrogreenGems Here is the link to the garden hose I use. amzn.to/3P2EeLf Its nice because on the back side I can lower the pressure of the water coming out. I use low pressure to water trays, mist seeds and wash the flood tables and use full pressure for washing the totes and wokr stations.
Thanks for sharing. This along with your soaking part 2 video really made me able to dial in a work flow.
Thx! Glad I was able to help. Once you get a few grows in, you’ll find your rhythm. I try to make things very easy.
Wow! That is wild. Garage Garden!
Food so expensive, why not grow in myself if you have the room :)
What an amazing setup! I have been seriously considering converting my garage into an indoor growing area. This is literally like a cheat code!!! LOL! Super useful information all the way through! Thank you for putting this together and sharing with us!
Thanks man, it beats growing them in my mechanical room :) the garage is the way to go. You save tons on cleaning, harvesting, seeding. So worth it! The extra space will be used to grow tomatoes, cucumber, peppers, etc. We invested 100% of income from the greens into growing the business. Still a few more thing that I want to change, will make more videos on that later on.
What about misting?
You talking about germination or after they are in the racks?
Could you explain your tray setup? What type of trays, how are they supported, do you use soil, etc?
Hey @Matthy5k the flood traya are the ones by botanicaire made for a 2x4 rack. It hits in perfectly. Don’t need to support it. I use soil. I will be doing a full walk through of my setup and how I run everything in a few months. I will explain everything.
@@growingwithsimon I'm talking about the individual grow trays. Do they rest directly on the flood tray?
Yes they sit directly on them.
All you need is one light per shelf? I've seen many using 2 54 watt, is 1 really enough?
That’s all you need if you use the sunblaster because they are quality lights vs the stuff you get on amazon
The lights are 10 1/2 inches for this setup
hi, do you offer consultancy? I am interested in building the automated watering for my microgreens.. if yes, where can i contact you? thx ahead
How big is your operation. You can just scale up the exact same setup. I’m also going to be posting my newest setup with 2 racks automated together.
Sweet setup 👍 Im doing micro greens now but only to feed my worms ... ✌️
Thanks, had to upgrade again with a 3rd rack will be doing another video on my new setup
what is best PPFD value for hydroponics
You need to use DLI, each plant has different optimal DLI. You can do a quick and easy Google search. Their is a few charts with most common plants.
@@growingwithsimon Thank you very much. Yes, I found some advise from google about DLI
Do you run the lights 24hrs a day?
18 hrs on 6 off
Nice helpful video Simon. Inside your wood reservoir, what is the material that forms in inner box and what plastic bag/covering do you use? Where can I buy? 🙏🏻 Thanks
Thank you 🙏🏻 For the Poly lining on the inside, did you just tape the walls to the base, caulk, then put the vapor barrier over it? What’s the best place to get the poly I didn’t see it in the item list?
You put the caulking in the corners of your wooden box, than place the vapour barrier inside and fill up 1/2 way with water so the vapour barrier fills the box. I only stapled the very top on the wooden box than I screwed a 1x2 on top of that to sandwich the vapour barrier in between the wooden box and 1x2. Caulking the corners of the vapour barrier is just an option. I would suggest it because water will get into the corner and you won’t be able to clean it. The link to the vapour barrie has been added to the video description. It’s a perfect side because you can make 4ftx8ft boxes. Thank you!
Great and simple idea, though you may want to raise those walls so more light reaches the plants because the LEDs need to be quite high to achieve an even PAR/DLI distribution. Is the aluminium the generic cheap stuff you can get anywhere?
Yeah just the generic stuff, remember their is a side shinier than the other. Your right, the higher the better but the light would have been higher than the aluminum. I tested the DLI using the Photone add (video in that) and it’s pretty even.
What utter nonsense!
What about this is nonsense?
Interesting topic. It’s definitely worth considering
Always better to be safe than sorry
Your website got hacked. I am trying to contact you to ask some questions about the ebb & flow rack
What’s your question?
@@growingwithsimon do you see this work in on coco mat?
@vam7706 Yes, bottom watering is bottom watering. However do you add nutrient to your water? That’s why I go with soil. Nutrient already in the soil. It also hold moisture better for germinating and I don’t have to mist the flats everything day or even twice a day. I’ll soon be doing some videos on how I grow. Just need the time.
That mixture is for 10ml ? So you recommended doing a higher EC level because when you add water to the solution the EC LEVEL DROPS to the average desired EC
Hey rodney, I wouldnt recommend doing very small batches. wayy to much room for error. I usually do a big batch in a large 64L tote that way I can use it on demand without having to mix it so much. Do a batch according to instructions and if the EC is too high add a bit of water to bring it down.
@@growingwithsimon ok I understand do a big batch and use water to bring EC down to desired level so b I will have at hand for use
how do you flush if doing a tower
Change the water in tower to just water. But than your flush everything. Other option would be to pull the plant out with roots and place in a mason jar with just water for a day or 2
Heroic work. Respect.
Thank you!
Great tutorial! Thank you for putting this together.
Glad it was helpful!
Hello bro I'm back
Hey, welcome back!
Thanks for helping us save money through this inflation! I'm gonna binge watch all your videos now!
Hey, Just make sure you fluff out the ball to increase germination rate.
So i believe this but help me understand, have you really nor not found any research on this topic?
The benefit of flushing is mainly to reduce the nitrates contant, here is a research done. You can click on the graph and notice the 48hr flush has more than 1/2 the nitrates. www.researchgate.net/figure/Quantitative-and-qualitative-parameters-measured-at-the-harvest-of-treated-and-untreated_tbl1_361761035
good tip , thanks for the video
Thanks! Just make sure you fluff out the cotton balls. The ones I used in video had a smaller germination rate, was because the ball was very tight and the roots had a hard time going through it.
