How to Close Pivot Holes on a Pocket Watch Using Watchmakers Staking Tool
Просмотров 8 тыс.Год назад
I'm going to be using my staking tool set to close the pivot holes on a pocket watch. Closing pivot holes was a regular practice on watches with the low number of jewels. It was a common job that the watchmaker had to perform almost daily. Sometimes you had to do it several times a day. If the pivot holes are too large, you're going to have a loss of power and that watch won't run well. More th...

10 prong sleeve bench key is what the tool is called.
Do you have any links for these tools and accessories you are using? Love your videis! High quality!
Most of my tools have been bought on eBay. I have found some on Dave’s Watch parts .com. The bad part of buying off eBay is some of the tools are worn out and it’s hard to tell from the pictures. Screw drivers I buy them new get the best you can afford same with tweezers.
We need more 'ol timers teaching potential young timers like this! Great vid.
Thanks for the comment.
what oil did you use for lubricating the mainspring?
I use clock oil for the mainspring lubricant.
@@myhobbiesarenotcheap a specific oil or a generic clock oil?
It's great to see a 950 taken apart. Thanks for filming and sharing. Good luck with rest of the service 😊
Is it single roller 974 ?
This is a single roller watch.
Best channel on RUclips!
Thank you for your great comment Jessie!
Wow, that's such a beautiful watch, engravings are awesome. Thanks so much for this episode, can't wait for the next!!!! You and yours have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Hopefully my part that I need will be in this weekend. Then I’ll be able to make part two. We also wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
How can you tell if the watch is screw off or pop off?
Usually a watch case that pops off will have a small lip or indented area to pry up on. The screw on type are usually smooth all around the edges of the case.
Thanks for sharing I always enjoy your videos.
Very nice watch! I worked on a Hamilton 974 recently. Not nearly as nice as your 950 but you can still see the Hamilton quality. I needed a balance staff and found out that Hamilton used 4 different size staff pivot and jewel sizes for the 974 and I needed to measure what I had. There were also different staffs if single or double roller and large or small collet sizes. I am not sure if your 950 has similar variations.
The Hamilton 950 used a small or large collet size the pivots size are 10 or 11. The 974 is a great watch I have one and it’s brother the 975 in hunter configuration.
Just found this , amazing and fascinating videos 🥃🏴 do you have an email address I was was gifted an old pocket watch and wondering how to identify make model and year , I'm in Scotland
I find my information on pocketwatchdatabase.com you enter the serial number on the back of movement and manufacturer. It will tell you all the information you need. Thanks I hope this helps.
Thank you for this video. Is the riveted balance staff removal tool new and still available? And, if so, can you tell me the cost and the best place to order it? This is the first time I can ever recall seeing such a tool. Is this tool required or just helpful? I am going to try my first balance staff replacement, replacing a 2532C balance staff on an Elgin railroad pocket watch. Thanks a lot, Thomas
Hello Thomas I bought mine on EBay. I don’t think there is a new one being produced. I just looked on eBay and they have some available. Some are not a complete set and are missing the punching tool. But if you have a staking set you should be able to use one of the peening punches instead of the one that comes with the set. The prices are all over the place for the tool. They are getting harder to find. Do you have a staking tool set? I made some videos about the punches and stumps in the set. Thanks for posting your comment.
@ Hi, I have purchased a staking set on EBay, but I haven’t used it yet. My plan is to follow along with a RUclips video as the watch repair guy services a cheaper Elgin watch. I’ve gotten several of these movements and plan to follow along and do exactly what he does. Hopefully, it’ll all work out and I’ll gain some experience. The Elgin railroad watch balance staff repair will happen further on down the road as I gain experience. - Thomas
The K&D No 50 Balance staff remover was available in 5 sizes for pocket watches (5/8" , 3/4" , 7/8" , 1" , 1 1/8") depending on what staking set you have. For the correct size, measure the opening of your staking tool and subtract 3/16. There is also a smaller version (The 50B) designed for wrist watches.
Beautiful watch!
Thanks
nice watch
Thanks!
Unbelievable !! Here it is ! Thank You !
You are very welcome.
Thanks, I'd never seen using leather frogs for the bow or button! It makes a lot of sense.
I feel like this keeps from scratching and wearing out the bow of the case.
One of the most soothing (and informative) videos I have watched in a while!
Thanks for your great comment!
Thank you for this video, it is very useful. I understand that with the tapered punch you are using moves metal in towards the center but wouldn't the rounded punch make the hole bigger? I ask because I don't have a big enough tapered punch. Thanks again.
Sorry it’s taken me so long to reply the round punch will work fine I like using it more than the tapper punch it seems to close the hole better .
Literally the only video on You Tube that shows this! Thank you so much!!
You are very welcome!
It looks like you got a set that’s been very well cared for, they’re not all in such great shape after years of use.
I’ve used this set a lot and it still works great.
thanks i have one
Nice tip! Anyone else wishing he'd move the rest of the watch away from the acetone procedure a bit further?!
I’m very careful with the acetone.
Thanks for this brilliant video. Are all denture tabs the same chemically or is there one make you would recommend? Wouldn't want to make things worse!
I just use the generic brand and haven’t had any issues.
@@myhobbiesarenotcheap Thanks for sharing !!
Excellent video. Thanks for making.
Thanks for the comment.
Amazing videos, mesmerizing. I have my eye on a pocket watch I like but I know I will need to go through it like this which seems scary (because its not working right). You have so many items, how much are all the item to clean your watches cost if one would buy them?
No more videos in the channel'?
A lot of expensive tools for just a small hobbie, but i think i could make them,, need to have alathe,, wich are not easy to find or cheap.
i need to crave a balance staff but i dont have the tool,, thye are not chepa,, maybe i will try to make a puch myself.

nice i thought i was watiching the bunns specla chanel but then i thought that quality was better , looked to the name but i was in a diferent chanlel funny, hapened to me again aahahah
No watches or cats were harmed in this video.
This is a most useful series. Thank you for taking the time to elucidate the functionality of the staking set, Sir.
You're welcome, I'm glad it was helpful.
Great job, very thorough in your explanations
Thanks for the comment
I Carrys'a POCKET WATCH ins mys'a BIBS, haves fors'a YEARS.
I like carrying my in overalls too
I have a 1907 Rockford that was running great but then it started stopping unless you shake it or tap it. The mainspring is wound tight. Does that sound any alarms as to what may be my issue? Thanks great video!
The watch probably needs to be serviced which consists of taking it apart cleaning and then oiling the pivot holes. There are some good watch repairers in some of the Facebook watch groups you could find on near you. I wouldn’t take it to a jewelers most don’t know how to work on antique pocket watches.
@@myhobbiesarenotcheap I tried to unwind it like you did but mine has covers over the spring gears but after taking the covers off it started running and so far it’s been a couple hours and it’s still running so I’m not sure what happened but it worked for the time being anyway
That’s fantastic I hope that takes care of the problem.
Im absolutely loving this series. Ive been interested in watches for about 7 years now. My grandfather used to do a bit of watch repair and I've been tinkering and studying some of his donor watches. Been looking to learn more. I havent been able to find anyone to teach me so these videos are great
That’s fantastic to hear keep up the studying.
It's really been a joy watching your videos. And I, as others have stated.. am very happy to see you posting videos again. I'm about halfway through my 60th year on this earth and just recently discovered the wonderful world of pocket watches. I only have 1.. I'm actually ,at this writing still waiting for it to be delivered by mail...and if usps tracking is correct that delivery is tomorrow., Saturday 19th . I'm still waiting on the first one and I've already been trying to buy more . The one coming in tomorrow is a Hamilton 940 18s 21j..its supposed to work and hold time. It hasn't been serviced lately but does come with the records of It's past services. I think the provenance of that adds to the watches history. I'm disabled so i won't be doing any tear downs. So i want to acquire working watches. I like the largest size which I believe is 18 for railroad types..my hand doesn't work well, small objects..small watches will be difficult to keep ahold of. I gave $150 for the 940, that may have been too much but i dont know....I'll learn. What are good ones you like and could recommend , or those to stay away from ? Thanks , Russ
First off thanks for the great comment. I think you did well on the price of the Hamilton 940 that’s a fantastic railroad watch. Some of my favorite railroad watches are the Elgin railroad watches they are really robust. The Elgin size 18 BW Raymond is a favorite. It can be found in 17 jewels up to 23 jewels and the price of these are usually reasonable. Since you have a Hamilton you might want to just collect Hamilton size 18 but they can be expensive sometimes. Any of the American made watch’s are a good choice. I would stay away from Swiss size 18 watches. I think I need to do a video on something’s to look out for when buying watches.
My first and favorite pocket watch is a Waltham railroad grade 845 from 1907.
Thank you for the video. Following this, I replaced my crystal.
Glad it helped
Can I make a let down tool out of a jewlers screwdriver?
Yes I have used a screwdriver before it worked.
I learned so much from this video! Thanks for taking the time to make it!
Thanks
This is a great video, and great explanation of the steps you are taking. Thank you!
Thanks for the comment. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
First, I want to say I watched the whole playlist on the use of a staking tool set! Thank you for the time and well worded explanations, I really have learned so much from you already. I wanted to ask if you need a separate setup or different stumps than what is usually found in these older staking sets to properly do “double roller” tables? I think I’ve only seen you do single rollers, unless I missed it. Thanks again and i look forward to future videos!
I removed a double roller in this video ruclips.net/video/jAMyjuf1NDI/видео.htmlsi=TJS75zxWbCbrH83k
Thanks again for another excellent opportunity to learn from you. Keep them coming!
Your welcome

Thanks for the video. I always enjoy and learn something from them. Again, thank you.
Awesome timepieces, my friend!! Gosh, I just continue to be fascinated with the pocket watches of yesteryear. To me, they're works of art. Thanks for this great episode! Love all your videos, have missed you. Please bring us more!! Have a good week.
