I preferred the sound of the Rat just from this video. The DS-1 has a brittle fizzy top end I don't like. It seemed to sit on top and separate from the mix. It almost had that digital sound I associate with bad amp sims.

You you should try a line 6 distorto from the same series that the verbzilla is on, it has a feedback thing like the boss DF2 and Feedback booster do

It's like the boss has the low end compressed up. in this video i like the rat more, the boss here sounds like more calling for metal.

I like the Rat more but the DS1 is good for when you're layering tracks as well, by having different distortion sounds stacked together you have a more full sound I find.

The RAT's a good call. And you don't need the trem. Distortion > Chorus > delay > Reverb. 4 pedals, into a clean amp. Trem, flange, wah, and so on are all optional, the trem comes from Vox and certain other amps that had trem and also trem on guitars which is actually vibrato but it is not a necessity. Single coils and humbuckers will both work. Also the delay can be fully digital, although a lot of notable bands used 2 analog delays, you can also hear 1 digital delay (probably a dd-2) on a lot of post punk songs (they also use digital delay from the keyboards on synth parts too). Your rite that chorus is a must, specifically Roland/Boss chorus - Juno chorus, Roland Jazz Chorus or the pedals will all do the job.

With such a minimal signal chain I would make sure each pedal is capable of doing double time. A Rat2, or HM-2 could do both the distortion, and Muff tones. A multi mod pedal like the Oceans 11 can tackle any modulation. Add a Delay that has Reverb, and now with the Plumes, you have still have a 5th spot for something like an Octave, Looper, Wah...
