The moment that changed my life forever was the time I tried tuning to drop D without realizing I was already tuned to open G. I had in fact tuned the 6th string to C and only realized once I began playing. That tuning makes playing the music I want to play feel as natural water flowing downstream or current going to ground. (1stD) (2ndB) (3rdG) (4thD) (5thG) (6thC) The best tuning there is.

corgan and mascis were my main influences in playing lead, love mascis' medolies and corgans controlled chaos
My favourite ‘grunge-type modulation’ pedal is the Keeley Dyno-My-Roto. The price is right, and it has three modes: a tri-chorus that would give you lovely underwater, seasick vibes; a rotary speaker simulator, that will give you those “Black Hole Sun” tones; and finally, a very flexible flanger that can do very subtle all the way through windtunnel hell. I also use a TC Corona mini chorus, as I can load it with different TonePrints depending on my needs, which kind of makes it like 50 different chorus pedals.

It's a very common trick to play the 3rd chord as a major chord. Also making the 4 chord a minor chord is common, especially playing a few bars as a major chord then going to a minor chord on the last bar, I call it The Beatles trick

Alice in Chains is basically Eb tuning across the board with some drop C#/Db like 'Them Bones'. Jerry refers to as "Alice" tuning. I do find distortion a bit grating on Standard tuning and Drop D, Eb or D Standard seems to balance that out to my ear. Cool video, thanks 👍

Check out the video interview "guitar moves, josh homme" he's a very talented songwriter and outstanding guitar player and he has a very particular why of doing solos, he explains he changed some notes from the mighty minor pentatonic and it sounds like a different thing! It's very inspiring and easy to try but hard to master, and most importantly it's really fun to play like that and experiment, give it a chance, it's a great little lesson

Soundgarden uses a rotovibe live for black hole sun. You can use a chorus pedal, it really doesn't matter, but it's not like univibe and rotary pedals are still rare these days.

IIRC, Guns & Roses also made use of E flat Standard. Obviously not Grunge, but previous to this video, they were the first I ever heard of doing that.

I used to have a Pearl Octaver and used it as a distortion unit when i grew sick of the sounds i was getting. As it was analog, the tracking was all over the place and sounded great.
In the same band i did that with id have added Phaser (I think i had an old Yamaha one) to crunchy tones and played a bit like Lifeson from Rush, which made the drummer play more like Jimmy Chamberlain.
That sounds really cool. Weird how those imperfections often make stuff better!

The phase shifter effect seems really similar to what you'd get from a wah pedal. It seems like that sound was synonymous with 90s grunge between jerry cantrell's wah and billy corgan's phaser.

Maybe you could try TrueFire for your lead lines. There are a lot of courses there. As long as you know your way around the fretboard, you could use single string lines or even two string lines that will make you fly over the fretboard, though I'm still not there myself... :)
I like "Brad Carlton's Guitar Lab: Speed, Precision & Endurance Vol. 1", even though you have to organize your practice yourself, you're not just following along. Then there's Dweezil Zappa course called Fretboard Freedom, which takes a little bit different approach, but I like it. His Phrase Generators is also good, but it's more oriented towards building licks with 3-1-3 notes arpeggios on three strings at a time, and stuff like that.

There's a common theory/urban myth that has several videos & forum posts about is that Eb tuning sounds particularly great on Strats.

@@thesethingsmakenoises mostly just being a Strat. Plus, Hendrix, Clapton, and others in the 60s & 70s popularized it.

Listen to Eruption and some other early EVH stuff for a slow phase pedal. Also, learning some of his solos might help with your lead direction. I know he’s not exactly grunge, but so what?

I have the same problem with lead parts and solos where I have a good riff and a pretty good melody but I just actually have no clue what kind of solo like stuff to put over it. The only thing I could really recommend is trying to learn some of your favorite solos then attempt to figure out why you like it and as such add that insight into your lead lines and solos. Great Video though man!
I know what you mean haha! There’s a song by my band called ‘Parasite’ and I played the lead soloey bit on that and I think that’s the first time I’ve ever written one that sounded ‘professional’ if you get me (even though it’s super simple) but yeah I reckon learning some solos is probably a great shout. I think I just end up falling back on the pentatonic shapes which is why it maybe sounds clunky.
Most people don't. Let me help. You should be able to sing your solo out unless you play in animals are leaders or some other musicians musicians band. Don't worry about how many notes you're playing, instead, you want a riff. I like to play the song and sing random lines it'll I find one I like, then I learn that line on guitar. This makes your solos feel like they were written for the song instead of just playing fast notes in the right key.

Motörhead and Kiss also played most of their stuff in Eb standard tuning. But then again, grunge took a lot of inspiration from 70’s rock and metal, so it’s not that much of a shock.

Eb standard has been my main tuning for a long time (The Smashing Pumpkins and Failure), but after Shiner and The Life And Times became my favorite bands, I went to D standard, and I like it. But I like to mix it up a bit. DADGAD is cool. I also have this weird tuning that's Eb-G-A#-F-G-D. That's just Yvette Young's tuning, only one whole step down from her FACgae.
I have also tried a tuning that the band Chavez has used. E standard, but you drop the low E to A. Later they also used to drop the E only to C, and that's my main tuning on one of my guitars. :)
All that stuff makes me play differently and makes me think about melody within riffs, instead of having me think about chords and chord progressions. For some reason, though, even in the weird tunings, variants of the i-IV-iv-V progressions is what I keep landing on haha! But at least the harmonic content of the chords is more weird and that makes it sound just a little bit different.

So I had to teach black hole sun to a bunch of kids over the years, and the way to get the correct tuning is basically doing drop D, but every note is tuned sharp, roughly about 3/4s of the way to the next note.

As for gear the Sire S3 (HSS) I seriously like and gets solid reviews and with Ibanez AZES31/40 as Squier Classic Vibe series seems good value for money in the same-ish price bracket. A Tele looks cooler but an HSS strat is more versatile and better ergonomics...

I don't know if you want to go down this rabbit hole but, if you tune down about half of a half step it's supposed to be like a weird satanic tuning that was banned by the catholic church. Pantera uses this tuning.
