I have seen several cutting boards made with barrel staves but this is the first I have seen where the staves were straightened. That is a pure genius move. I make a lot of things with barrel staves. With the curvature of the staves you have to get very creative with how approach everything and with that you also have limitations on what you can do. The curvature also causes a lot of waste of the wood. Straightening out the staves is a real game changer and opens up a lot of possibilities other than cutting boards.

I have a question. is this the hammer screw you use to attach the metal hoops to the wood?

I've been planning a steam box for this purpose. If you could go back, would you make the box bigger to accommodate 2-3 staves at a time? I was thinking about a 12x12x5' box for this reason.

Why don't you cut the doors down to the rings?

I build the exact same barrel with only 20 hours of actually hands on. My shelves rotate too.
