One of my awesome neighbors had this tree cut down and gave me the log. This log will be used in an upcoming timber frame project for my wife’s pottery barn. This log was somewhere around 26’ Long. The biggest section of log I cut at 14 foot long. It’s right at 27 inch diameter from end to end. My estimate using the green log weight chart is that this 14 foot log weighs somewhere around 3700 po...

      2” thick slabs like that would bring at least 10$ a board foot I’d guess - for reference, a six inch long by 12 inch wide by 2 inch thick piece is one board foot. Each one of those slabs he cut could sell for a minimum of 150-200$ a piece on the low end

    Hello. I have a question. How tightly do you tighten the chain on the bar?

    • @stoneguyswoodcraft3687
      @stoneguyswoodcraft3687 2 года назад

      I keep the chain just tight enough so I could pinch it in the middle of the bar and lift it high enough to slide a small coin under it. I’m using a woodland pro chain on this set up, which tends to stretch a little bit after the first or second cuts. I check it frequently and make sure it’s not too loose from stretching. I hope that makes sense, thanks for watching!

    Nice setup! Clever idea to use a log arch to haul the logs and putting them on the trailer. People sometimes forget how heavy these things are. What type of chain are you using? Is it sharpened in a specific angle?

    • @stoneguyswoodcraft3687
      @stoneguyswoodcraft3687 2 года назад

      The arch has defiantly made moving logs so much easier! the chain in this video is from Baileys online store, it is a .404 ripping chain ground to 10°. I buy it in 50' and 100' rolls. Ripping chain is considerably smoother and a little faster, well worth it. You could also take your 30° chains to a saw shop and have them grind it down to 10° and that would work just as well. www.baileysonline.com/woodlandpro-43rp-404-pitch-ripping-chain-wpp-43rp.html I also highly recommend Carlton milling chain if you can find it. This seller on eBay is awesome (eandrsupply) Ive purchased 100' rolls of 3/8" ripping chain and its the best IMO. thanks for watching!

    You mention a 42" bar. Which mill are you using? the 36 or the 48". I guess what I'm wondering is if you can use a 42" bar on the 36" granberg mill.

    • @stoneguyswoodcraft3687
      @stoneguyswoodcraft3687 2 года назад

      Hi Mike, I use the 48" Granberg mill. Yes you could absolutely us the 42 " bar on your 36" mill. You would need to remove the safety plate for your saw tip. The big benefit of a 42" bar on the 36" mill is your maxing out your cutting width to the full 36".

    Hey man love what your doing. Was wondering if you could send me a list of the things you have to be able to do this. I have a lot of logs on my property I don’t wanna go to wast. But don’t have the budget for a big mill.

    • @stoneguyswoodcraft3687
      @stoneguyswoodcraft3687 3 года назад

      Hi, no problem. Really all you need to get started is a 70cc or bigger chainsaw, an Alaskan mill, and a top rail system. Top rails could easily be an old extension ladder. Also ripping chain is very nice if you can find it. That will get you started, all other tools are luxury stuff that are very nice if you can afford them but not absolutely nessisary. I hope this helps you out, let me know if I can answer any other questions.
