Chiroptera M2 (mark 2) zero wind/indoor glider kite - An attempt to make perfection even better.
Chiroptera M2
If perfection could be made better, this would be a prime example.
Not satisfied with his original Chiroptera design, Will Study tried to push beyond the limits of what was already a wondrous glider kite.
If you own one of these beauties, consider yourself lucky. Moreover, if you ever plan on rehoming your Chiroptera, please, please… remember me.
In Will's own words:

While the overall sail shape changed only slightly, the build details have been updated to make better use of a variety of materials to increase durability. The scalloped portion of the leading edge - where most wear and tear from collisions with trees or poles happens - is now fully reinforced. No more...

Chiroptera - An extraordinary zero wind/Indoor glider kite
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.3 года назад
Will Sturdy started designing kites as teenager. He flew them on the street where he grew up. Initially he was focused on dual and quad lines, but he became eager to explore the world of single line flyers. Son of a passionate RC glider modeler, Will received his father guidance during a series of prototypes that would become the Chiroptera. Will succeed in an spectacular fashion, filling up th...

San Diego Kite Club meeting (07-10-21) I was finally able to put this video up! Took me more than a week. I do not know why, but I couldn’t import the videos I originally made back in the field. It took me a while to find a workaround, but I’m happy that I was able to do it. The kite club changed the usual location. Instead of Tecolote Shores, we went to Coronado Cays Park. This new location is...
Black Swan kite - A graceful stylized bird.

This was one of the first kites that I ordered from China through AliExpress. I like stylized birds, thus I found this very appealing. The kite is called “black Swan” but for some people it looks like a condor or a vulture This kite was one of the first that I tried to really get good photographs for Facebook posts. I thought it was about time for it to get its own video. The kite was originall...
An intriguing bird - Moonlight Star kite by Robert Brasington

Yesterday was a nice day for flying. I really wanted to fly high. The Moonlight Star did not disappoint. I tweaked the towing point for the stronger than usual wind, and off it went. The flanges on the wings are a delicate and precise touch that adds a sense of lightness. Robe...
ZERO G glider kite - A descendant of the Plutz glider kite and Platz human glider.

Not a Fighter kite, neither an Eddy - Phoenix Void kite by Robert Brasington

This is an interesting kite. At the beginning I didn’t really think it will be a good flyer, given how skinny it is. Moreover, it seem to be a complement, almost like a sibling, to the other Phoenix kite by Brasington... The Phoenix tail. Unlike the Phoenix Tail, the Phoenix Void does...

I like long tails. The longer the better. So I was immediately attracted to this Eddy in AliExpress. I also liked the design, as I enjoy abstraction to represent animals. This one is a special kite. I got it sometime in 2018, it was an eBay find. There was something about that face and the unusual shape of the sail. Phoenix Tail kite - By Robert Brasington

This kite is among my favorites. It is a beautiful kite, a good flyer in light winds. Is quite responsive to tugs on the line, which allows for really good control when I have hovering a couple of inches above the ground. The kite was designed by Robert Brasington and licensed to New Tech kites. It is of good quality, but there other kite brands that are notably better. The kite may not be easy...

Francisco, if you see this comment, I'd be interested to know if your kite is still in good condition. Mine, while not having flown often and never in strong wind, has worn through where the red sail meets the cross-spar. The kite is tensioned quite strongly, but I would not have expected that to happen to such a well-made kite. I'll be showing it in a video in the next few days, but I'd love to know if you have had a similar problem.
Sorry to hear that! Fortunately I haven’t had that problem… yet. I guess I will reinforce the contact point to prevent it from happening.
@@furiber4 That would be a good idea, Francisco. It's a good kite.

I could see a redesign of this for outdoor motor powered using vector control or wing tip flex. Using motor for altitude n wing tip flex for direction would be semi aerobatic, another is use of vector power for sport like flight with higher degree or aerobatics.
I'm glad I came across this video because I still have my Vick's fighter kite from the 70s I had as a kid and dug it out of my closet, It's black with a yellow arrow pointing upward ⬆️ still in decent shape, Nice to know they are now a collectors item! Dimensions of this kite please?
If memory serves is 29x 53 inches.
Mine needs some trimming. It will fly nicely for a while and then either roll through 90 degrees and hit the ground, or suddenly tuck under ( rotate forwards), go inverted and fly quite happily upside down. Very strange!
Hi Francisco, I have the same kite( in a different color though) it always goes of to the right and then crashes. The bridles are exactly the same length and I tried it in different wind conditions: Goes right and crashes. Do you have any idea on how to fix it? Lars
That is a good question. Honestly, I have no idea if what I have done with other inflatable kites is right. What I have done is to shorten the strings of the opposite side, just like I would do for kites with spars. Just a little loop knot as no to shorten too much at a time, then you can make the loop smaller or bigger. Seems to work for me.
I particularly like how easy it is to put it together. A 3 piece mainspar with shrink wrapped connecting tubes for additional strength and 2 simple bent spars for the outside portions. And it all packs into a small bag including the spinsock tails. Nice!!
Yes! You are absolutely right
What a great find Francisco! This kite is one I've admired for a long time and the tails just add more pizzaz to the already beautiful spectacle. If I ever make it to San Diego, there are two things I want to do. Meet you for a kite fly & eat at Not Not Tacos by Sam The Cooking Guy on RUclips!
beatifull design! seems like this is very light fabric, what is number of density(or any information about this nylon, i would really appreciate it)?
I agree. This a great looking design. I never spoke with Will about the fabric it self. Let me see if I can get that information for you.
@@furiber4 That would be amazing. I'm working on the unfolding wing concept and already have the first prototype. But unfortunately lightest fabric I get from China was 46-48g per square meter, seems like it's to heavy to be properly stretched..and it turned out that this is a very high density for wing tension
This video feels like a mini vacation :-)
Thanks! That is a great compliment.
Craig let me give these a shot it was super fun once I got the hang of it! Craig is the best!
Me too! I loved the dynamics. Unfortunately they are no longer made and I suck as a kite maker.
I built Eddy kites from the age of 11 or 12 -- using 6' spars of Bamboo -- garbage bag material and string. They are inherently stable so no tail is required -- but enhances the look!
Yes. I couldn’t agree more. A tail that’s a detail that, on itself, can tell a tale. 😄
Nice Rokaku 😆😆
This is not a Rokkaku. This is a Suruga. Rokkakus are hexagonal, whereas Surugas are pentagonal. Surugas have those distinctive flanges on the bottom half.

This is really cool - an exciting display!!! I hadn’t been much interested in fighter kites before but this has opened my eyes to fun new possibilities!!! Thank you!
I've been trying to find proper kites to replicate what the Lil' Miss Takes can do. I may have to end up making them my self. Been trying to find ripstop fighters, with hemmed edges, to no avail…
I love your video, this kite, and your camera set-up! Thank you for the video! I flew this kite for the first time yesterday when we didn’t have much wind, and it was amazing, quickly climbing high!
Thanks for the compliment. I am glad you enjoy your Emong as much as I do. There is something magical about glider kites.
Looks like you had a fun day, some great kites, thanks for sharing. regards Moon.
Oh yes! It was a wonderful, wonderful day.
That Double Tunnel Delta @ 02:44 is pretty cool as are the other kites!
Then I guess is time to make a video of that particular kite
Nice kite & video to match. I havent flown in zero wind in decades and back then it was only stunt kites with 2-4 lines on them!
Thanks. Zero wind has really grown in me. And to think I used to think it was a silly thing…
I have a kite that looks just like that and it was called 2 IN 1 COMBO - Eye Catching Kite Tails + 8 Hole Single Line Control Parachute Parafoil Foil Kite Outdoor Beach Garden Playground Fun whew. I ran out of breath saying all that.
Can you provide a link? I am curious.
I've bid $55 on Vic's Fighter Kites when I've seen them pop up on eBay. I've not won an auction yet. LOL. I regret not buying a bunch in 1982 when they were $15 at the local kite store. My friend bought a Spectra Star Freestyler then, $7.50. These seem to have dropped off the face of the Earth. There's the one mention in an issue of Kite Lines, and that's it. The spring metal in the spine design doesn't seem to have caught on either.
Is difficult to convince Victor to part with the ones he still has. I will tell him about the Ebay prices. He will like to know how appreciated they still are.
Is there anywhere these are sold (that takes online payment and will ship)? Ditto for those ITW kites in the background?
Unfortunately, Lil Miss Takes are not made any longer.
Kites on the background… This one kite I got through Aliexpress ruclips.net/video/JyYvK2a5W4k/видео.html
The other one, you may have to buy from Europe. ruclips.net/video/EIJIkIF40sE/видео.html
Just beautiful. Wish they were still produced. I'd call mine "The Stingray".
I wish Mr. Sturdy could find a way to get them into production again.
Hey Francisco, nice kite! Did you make this one or just the tails?!?
Yes I made the tails myself. I used organza rolls of 2 inches by 150 feet. Each ribbon was cut in half and then each half was used to make a double tail of each color on each side of the foil. Used a lighter to melt the fabric and prevent fraying. Given there are 4 colors is 8 tails per side. I highly recommend this parafoil. Is a great value for the money, that can be tucked to go with you anywhere… even with those amazing tails.
Super kite 👌🏼👌🏼
I agree. It flies exceedingly well and he’s not expensive at all. I am thinking of stacking two or three of these together.
What a great kite Francisco, thanks for sharing it with us! P.S. - Great Music Too!
Is a wonder! Wish they were made available again.
I somehow missed this until now. A lovely video, and it shows that you don't need to spend a fortune to get a special kite. Your added tails look great.

I have the small one - yes it does pull strongly, but will fly in quite high winds which ground some other kites and seems robust. It has an odd 'nodding' flight characteristic - I think one or more tail would be useful, but there are no loops provided as standard., so you would need to improvise. It's by HQ, but not on their current inventory, so anything at a retailer is, effectively 'New Old stock'
My understanding is that a new one, with new color patterns is in the works. Joel Scholz did a survey on Facebook regarding potential patterns. Just as yours, this is the small one. I have the big one, but not on video yet. I also agree that a tornado would be required to take down this baby. 😁 Been thinking of adding loops. I think those boas they sell at hobby lobby would make great tails on this.
@@furiber4 Perhaps Joel Scholz will revisit the flight characeristics and add some loops. Don't know about Hobby Lobby - I'm in the UK, and that site is blocked for some reason!

Most excellent video Francisco! The only Zero Wind Indoor flying I've done is stunt kite flying, but you & Glenn make this look fun! Back in the 90's I had access to empty gymnasiums for indoor kiting. I'd have to find a new place now!
It looks fun because it is fun! Although having a gym is nice, it’s not really necessary. Any open grassy area, without wind or close to zero wind, Well work. In this particular video I was flying well there was a small breeze going along. The line is super nice when you go and glide in favor of the wind and it allows you to gain altitude really fast when you’re pulling against it.
Great fly..and filming. Always love seeing sun shining through kite colors ! 🌞🌞🌞
Yes. Colors suddenly explode with intensity.
I think you did well as a beginner photographer.. as you go along I’m sure you will feel more comfortable as time goes by. I too, like to add tails to mine for a greater sky presence and the fluidity of the kite. That’s a wonderful acquisition!
Thanks for the compliments. Still so much to learn!
@@furiber4 As the years go by..I realize that there are proper and improper things to do. But a lot is left to the imagination of the flyer , as long as you fly safely. There is a lot to be said for experimenting as long as there is no cost to kite or your health.. :)
