I don't think 9-5's are all that bad, but like everything, it largely depends on the mindset. Anytime I went into a 9-5 I always thought what I would get out of it. Soft skills. Hard skills. Perceiving how things are ran (and judging if its the right thing or not). It sucks sometimes, but it builds a lot of self-reflection. I am an entrepreneur now but I have to say that a lot of its succes hings on all of those experiences. Even though I earn more money now (and, more importantly, found my role of fullfillment), its not easy, but even though I felt like shit back then, nowadays I regret nothing. That's the ultimate goal you want to persue. Make that journey count.

What else are you going to do in life? You can only stroll along a river and lake so long. I look at it like life is chaotic in a 100% secure 9-5, I can't imagine disorder, because it doesn't take much for trouble and chaos to find you. Cool car, awesome house, beautiful family, pool, lakefront, security - most importantly to me, self-reliance. People just need to find THEIR way and what THEY want. Edit: I'm certainly not defending the way things are in the US, any way you cut it, you're going to need food/shelter/etc.

I'm 20. Graduated last May. I've worked since I was 16, full time hours, but not a 9-5, more or so 1 to 10/4-10 and such. After graduation I had so many plans. I moved out of my parents house to live with my brother. I then got a job in a factory because the pay was decent and hours consistent. Everyday I would wake up at 5:30 and be at work about 6:30. I would work until 3:30 then go home. 3 months go by and I just don't go into work one morning. That wasn't like me. I Ws so depressed. The factory was gloomy, coworkers were dead inside, took in one spot my whole shift sorting car parts. That shit killed my dreams real fast. I’m glad it happened because shit, it taught me a lot. I know what I want out of life.

I've often looked at it like you're in a federal prison work release program. If I would've known this when my Mom walked me to preschool.....It would've been better to run into the woods and be raised by wolves.

I had my own business for years. Now at this phase of my life in my 40s I am working as a librarian and I absolutely love it. Working for yourself has benefits and some degree of freedom, but the stability was difficult to maintain and was not worth the amount of mental space it took up to keep it going. Now my 9-5 funds my art and writing and life feels way more balanced. There may come a day when I decide not to work a “job” again, but the socialization and collaboration has me feeling mentally healthier than I have in years. 🧚‍♀️

quit 9-5 at 22. there is no way i go back. as a sensitive, creative, self driven, curious and spiritual person, 9-5 is soul crushing. being self made also. because it can go wrong (at times it will). but i decide mostly how i plan my life. we are three guys owning a film post production firm since 2012. and we are all fathers who just don‘t want a real job. we love what we do. But We are working like 30 hrs a week. pretty good. and i am a father of two wonderful sons. best thing ever to be a dad. and i am sooo present in thier lifes.

Part time is the way forward, if you can accept being in a maybe more precarious financial situation. I have done. As long as I can afford shelter I am not very materialistic. You realise after a while that money isn't everything and mental wellbeing is so much more important

I shit you not I used to work 30 hours a week in a stable job at the hospital and had a pretty good life. And it bothered my wife and father in law so much they made me take a huge pay cut in order to have a full time 40 hour a week job.

And what is worse they think Something is wrong with you if you don't want to work and handle with all bulshit at job, gossip etc. Work sucks. I used to work 7,,8 years 12 hours a day. My bioritam is not the same like before that. I wake up in the middle in the night. When I stopped working I felt sorry and blame myself that I stopped. My health is severely impaired by that work of 7,8 years. I found other job 7 hours a day that is even worse I have to wake up early and it's difficult, if I m late10 min they will warn you that they will fire you. That's shit. They just want to use me and once they don't they will make up anything to get rid of me. So I m now on sick leave and don't plan to go there ever. Jobs destroyed me mentally and they have no respect. If you guys have money or some other option just don't start working, by the time you ll become negative,anxious and you ll start losing confidence of all gossip at work and from all all people that have nothing better to do but gossiping of other and make your life horror. Jobs are scam and bulshit.
