I've met a couple people who were successful with that. One guy actually got a product manufactured for him and it did well because he had pretty much the only product like that on Amazon. My friend I think does it with products that already exist and uses paid programs to study competitor data and does his own marketing social media campaigns to drive traffic to his products. I think if the idea excites you, you should learn more about it and possibly try it.
I get your point,but I don't think that is really that easy. You have to sponsor your product and build a solid base of customers. Also,you have to face a really harsh competition. Personally,I think that one should try to find a nieche market or do what you are really good at. For example,I'm really passionate about music and I'm really good at playing and arranging music in my genre,but it's not something that you can make a live of,unless you put a band together and go touring around the world at least 6 months a year. Also,I'm quite good at drawing,but I haven't been drawing for years,so I was thinking about starting again from scratch and try to build an e-commerce with personalised art and merchandise. The problem is that right now I'm slaving away for a 9 to 5 job in IT Support which is absolutely disgraceful and underpaid,and at the end of the day I'm just too tired to play some music or drawing. Plus,I live in London,which is one of the most expensive city on earth. I'm thinking about moving back to Italy,but it's not an easy decision, especially when you are almost 38 years old...
