Buxus Microphylla (Boxwood) bonsai transformation! Step by step demo.
Robert shows a common Buxus Microphylla (Boxwood) that you may often pass up at a nursery when hunting for bonsai material. At first glance, this looks like a huge mess and for the untrained eye, it sure doesn't look like potential bonsai material.
There are many ways to approach a bonsai and what Robert demonstrates here is just ONE of the many ways you could have approached this piece. Watch along and think how you would have styled it if this was your tree. Did it come close to what Robert imagined? Let us know in the comments!

There are a few things to consider when buying a bonsai from a big box retailer. 1. If the tree is displayed in a big warehouse with no sunlight or grow light, it's probably getting stressed. Three easy principals for juniper bonsai care. Bonsai For Beginners EP 11.

Many people who receive a bonsai as a gift over the holidays receive a juniper. We have seen horrible instructions on how to care for junipers (like keeping it indoors or watering it just once a week), so we wanted to make this video to clearly explain what you need to do to care for a juniper. Caring for a bonsai really isn't that hard, but you must know three things. 1. Temperature 2. Lightin...

How fast do bonsai trees grow? Bonsai For Beginners 10.

We often get asked how fast to bonsai trees grow. Often times, beginners want to purchase a small tree and grow into a large tree. Keep in mind, growing from a small tree to a large tree isn't necessarily what the art of bonsai is about. The art of bonsai is training the structure of the tree. So how fast do bonsai trees really grow? Well, it depends on the type of tree of course. If we never t...

What is a good time to tackle this type of job for boxwood?
Early spring
@@ShayanGivehchian yes, early spring is best.
I have a similar tree that was dig out of a yard. The branches are leggy and not many leaves only at the tips with lots of empty space in the middle. What do I do to get it back bud?
@@ShayanGivehchian it really depends on the tree when it comes to back budding. Some trees respond better than others, but the general rule is to clip back the leggy branches down to the next node. Try to do this when the plant is in its growing period and that varies depending on your location.

I just bought one and I don’t know what to do I wanted to keep it warm cuz I thought It was to cold outside but never mind iam leave out side I’ve never had one b4 I would like some advice I don’t have a heater in my house is it fine to just leave in my house or should I just leave it out side
@@LuisNava-w5e it's best to leave it outside and make sure it gets some sunlight. The temperatures don't fluctuate enough indoors for a juniper regardless if you have a heater or not. Junipers need the cold to go dormant. Keeping it warm would be forcing it to stay awake when it's trying to sleep. Like Nolan said in the video, if someone is continuously keeping him awake when he's trying to sleep, it's not gonna go well. We just posted another winter juniper care video a week or two ago. It's episode eleven of our Bonsai For Beginners series.
Excellent initial shaping without taking too much off. I've seen you work on other trees and you got a good eye, subscription earned!

Was the apex cut down a few inches by the nursery ?
@@The1superrussell not entirely sure if it was cut or damaged by something else. But it does look like an old scar.
Time to try another spruce! I killed the last one. You’ve inspired me 😊
@@MrBradezell what went wrong with the last one?
@@AsiaPacificGarden I’m not exactly sure. I styled and wired it but did not repot as I had planned to let it recover and repot in the winter. However, it died 2 months after I styled it possibly from theOklahoma heat combined with not watering enough I dont know.
@@MrBradezell the heat would definitely affect it. You kept it outside, right? Temperatures hit 115 here last summer and we watered our spruce collection probably 4-5 times per day. Remember, if you have the right soil and drainage, you will have zero issues with over-watering.

This is cedrus libani ''Green Prince" a grafted cultivar
I live on the southern facing coast of California. Temperature doesn't fluctuate much. winter lows 45° highs 65°. Summer lows 65° highs 75°. I don't have an area for outdoor sun for my juniper, but my large living room window faces south. Can I just keep it on the window sill with windows open? Recommendations?
@@TheBigred2500 I wouldn't recommend keeping it indoors still. While keeping the window open may sound enough, your internal heating still warms up the back half of the juniper. Junipers can grow in the shade perfectly fine. We have ones that are grown and displayed under a large tree that shades it the entire time. There are also junipers that are grown in southern California and as long as you source it from where it's grown, you won't have a problem with lows only going to 45. We have bonsai friends who grow junipers in LA and while the tree doesn't turn brown like the ones here in the PNW during winter time, they are still dormant.

Such a pity, it was growing so strong and the wrong pot made all work in vain. It looks so much better now.
@@tinekejoldersma we see so many of these trees come in when the big box stores stock them. Often times, by the time the customer brings it in to us, it's been damaged because of poor air circulation, root rot, and/or underwater. It doesn't help when the directions from the stores tell you to water it lightly once a week :/
I had purchase this same tree at Costco, it did not stay that way, all the leaves fell off and grew back with much larger leaves and very leggy
@@tracymunro6161 the smaller leaves were probably grafts that didn't survive. When those die back, it back buds from the original trunk, which sounds like it's a Ficus Retusa if it has big leaves.
Do you prone the dead leaves or let it drop by it’s own
@@joseponce6542 you can remove the dead needles, but just make sure you're not pruning ones that are just dormant. The dormant needles will wake up and turn green again in the spring.
After watching this thank u so much for this I took my bonsai outside as.i saw this btw your dad is a true genius
@@joseponce6542 thank you so much! Robert is definitely a pretty brilliant person.
How do I water my juniper if it’s outside on the cold winter though? Soil will be hard?
@@GustavoHCosta if it's at subzero temperatures where everything is frozen, no need to add more water. If it's above freezing, just ensure your soil isn't dry. Keep in mind, wind dries out the soil just as fast.
Please kind sir , could you tell me if you have the dwarf juniper bonsai in climate of Southern California where it came from a nursery grown in the same region where there are no real change of seasons other than a little warmer in the summer and a little fluctuation of colder in winter but not much extremes, can these trees adapt to not needing the seasons and be kept inside with plant lighting and humidifier, or outside with non season conditions and thrive or are they doomed to fail in an area such as Southern California provides? I just purchased two of these beautiful trees from this southern California nursery in late Dec /early January and they don’t appear to look as in a dormant state as you have shown would be the case this time a year even though they should be naturally , and hence so I figured I would pose this question. Any info would be most appreciated with your vast knowledge and wisdom … thank you 🙏
@@SoulUnspoken if it's sourced from that same area, then it's perfectly fine and we are 100% sure that there are juniper suppliers that are in Southern California. You would still have to grow this plant outdoors because it needs the temperature fluctuations. For example, right now, San Diego has a high of 72f and a low of 42f. Junipers need this type of temperature change. If you had kept it indoors, your indoor temperature is probably at a constant 70f, which would make that a tropical climate.
@@SoulUnspoken and not all of our junipers turn super brown. If it's been under shade, it stays relatively green. Some trees also turn browner than others as each tree has its own personality.

Amazing. I have just started the hobby of Bonsai and this is exactly what I want to produce. The finished tree and setting looks really good. I am now inspired to go and create my own. Question - I am in the UK. Can I create something like this indoors now it is winter and move it outside when it is completed? Greg - UK
@@gregwatkiss8973 it depends on what the temperature of your indoor workshop is. I wouldn't recommend working in a workshop where the room temperature is 70F/21C. Too much warmth can pull the tree out of its dormant phase. And of course, try to minimize the time it spends in your workshop.
@@AsiaPacificGarden Thank you for the advice. At the moment our temperatures are low at 3-5c during the day but I tend to leave my workshop outside door open in the day to let my dog come and go as like to spend a lot of his time outside in our garden. So the the room tends to be cool at most times. It is possibly not a good idea to start on a tree just now as we are having heavy frosts and some snow is forecast in the next few days. Would you say that I should wait until it becomes milder?
Do they tolerate subzero temperatures? Fahrenheit
@@1020J we've experienced temperatures as low as 15F before and our junipers were fine. It really depends on where you're at and how long the subzero temperature stays for. I would recommend looking for a bonsai club in your area and see what they do in your climate. Remember, each climate can vary drastically. Just because one method works in one area, doesn't mean it should be applied to another area.
