The Skye Trail - hiking 85 miles along the Isle of Skye
Wonderful review and summation. Love your content. I bought this tent (after much research incl your videos) in 3-season Khaki and have since bought a 4-season inner for more versatility. Admittedly only been out in the Peak District twice but I love it a lot. Also your fantastic mods. I have recently bought a Naturehike Cloud Peak 2 for more stability in wind. Have not yet been out in that.
Great video. Thanks
I’ve just taken delivery of my pro version, can anyone tell me me what the lowest temp I can seam seal it in?online it says 15c,obviously I am not going to see those temps right now in the uk.will I get away with maybe 10c?im dying to get it done so I can use it.
I suggest asking in the Lanshan Group in Facebook: facebook.com/share/g/19NsgdtC3j/?mibextid=wwXIfr
Great long time user.pay tribute!
Thanks!
Yeah, Mr Mouse didn't chew a hole in my vestibule 'door', I had a midgie invasion so lit up my cigar and was induced to chase one little b@!*$%d around the tent and must have caught a tent door (and my inflatable mat)! I repaired both on-hike with gaffer tape, proper job when at home with Tenacious tape. I have the Pro version and I was pleased with my seam sealing. It was neither hard nor time-consuming. However, on an early outing, there was a downpour that revealed a slight leak around one of the guy attachments on the side of the tent. Dripped on my forehead once evry few minutes for most of the night. Sorted when I got home. This is a brilliant tent!
Agree wholeheartedly. I have a Lanshan 2 and also a Lanshan 1. Both are superb for an old guy like me who likes his poles and appreciates light weight. My tents are like good friends and I like the fact that you can make your own modifications to enhance that friendship! Thanks for your great videos and your excellent suggestions. Love your work.
Aw thanks; I appreciate that! Nice to know that there are people out there who have the same experience
We have the Lanshan 2 pro and it's great for summer camping. However, after a really bad windy night in the Swedish mountains (Kungsleden trail), we bought the Exped Orion III extreme. We're happy to carry the extra weight for the added luxury and storm safety. The Lanshan didn't collapse in the storm, but it was windy (and therefore cold) inside due to the raised entries and the airvents near the ground. Of course, you could alway pin it down lower, but that's not something I want to do in the middle of the night in a storm, already feeling cold. Also, as with all single wall tents, condensation can and will run down the walls, so you always have to make sure that the foot section of the sleeping bag doesn't touch the wall, which isn't realistic for tall people.
I think you’ve neatly summed up the problems with the ‘Pro’ version; it’s cold, and condensation is a big problem. I don’t think it’s suitable for use in Northern Europe because of that. The Exped is a big step up in weight and cost! But it’s definitely going to be bigger and stronger
Excellent review. And thanks to your faith in this tent I just purchased the 4 season Grey one. It will replace my Vango Heddon 1, which I do love and ive had many great nights in it, but its a lot smaller than Lanshan 2 and is roughly 400gs heavier. What is your go to pole height for pitching in the UK?
Glad to hear that I helped! 🙂 Yes, you’ll notice the improvement over the Heddon; less weight, smaller packed size, and more internal space too. Pole height depends on the conditions (see my ‘how to pitch’ video). In summer on soft ground I start at 125cm, normally it’s around 118cm, in windy conditions I go as low as 115cm. The problem with setting it lower is that it makes the inner sag more. There’s a neat way to deal with that in my ‘Modifications’ video. Good luck!!
@@longsufferinghiker Thanks for the reply with the pole height. And Ill check out the other videos on pitching and the mods again.
Nice to see a really long-term review. Thanks for this one!
My pleasure!😇
Good video. I have the 1 pro which I modified as per your suggestions, work's well. I used the single large guideline up and over the top rather than the two extra mini poles. ( Thanks!) Whilst I agree their pegs are too small ( I replaced with Groundhogs) adding extra pockets and two way zips would just increase the weight. I love that the one pro still comes in under 1 kg with mods.
Thanks! It’s really great to hear that my suggestions have worked! 🙂
I have the one and two, totally agree with you, especially the two way zip. Also bought carbon fibre poles that fold down to four pieces so I can get them inside my Kestrel 48 L backpack. Followed your excellent mod guide too 👍🙏🕊️
Thanks mate. I really appreciate the feedback 🙂.
Great video. I have the exact same version and colour and love it. Would be great if they did a footprint that also covered the porch😁
That would be cool! 😎 the thought had crossed my mind as also. It would need to have a hole for the poles to fit through, so it’s not straightforward… but at the moment I have to muddle through with sit mats/stuffsacs.
I can vouch for the stealth touch to it. I thought someone had pinched mine in the Peak District, it was so well hidden amongst the brown heather🤔😁
😂 that’s a great story!!!
Good stuff Chales I have a night cat variant of the Lanshan 1(already seam sealed) I am up to 60 nights in Ireland and the UK, I have also made made some mods on yours and others advice, as a solo hiker of near 70 it has increased my confidence in the tent I do look at upgrading but then ask why - still not found an answer.
Totally agree; why change, when all the alternatives are heavier/much more expensive! Even the DCF tents are notoriously noisy in the rain.
I have a lanshan 1 and Taiji 1 - both great value tents . It’s pretty straightforward to add an additional zipper to give you a two zip option all you need is some patience to carefully unpick the bottom zip hem and add a YKK no 3 double sided zipper . Re - sew your hem , seal seal and away you go . I totally agree with you 3Ful make a great shelter for the money
That’s a very interesting suggestion for the zip; I’m intrigued! Can you go into a little more detail? Cheers!
Wow, Charles. 100 nights. I'm willing to bet not many shelters, cheap or expensive ever get to provide that many secure nights for campers! I have one which I bought almost 3 years ago, and I've done 30+ nights in it. The advantages far outweigh any disadvantages it has, and as you rightly point out, there's nothing out there to touch in terms of value for money. I'm a frugal person, partly by necessity but also I don't subscribe to the credo that everything that is cheaper is necessarily of a lesser quality. You could argue the case that spending close to a four figure sum on something which essentially does the same job is possibly a case of brand snobbery to some extent. I have to admit though, i treated myself to another palatial 2 person 3FUL product for Christmas gone by, and bought a Taihang for about €150 landed at my door in Ireland. From my initial use I think it may be just as good quality wise and gives me an option when I'm not using trekking poles. Anyway great review as always Charles, one of my favourite youtubers, keep up the great work, and long may your faithful Lanny keep you snug!
Thanks so much! 😊 I totally agree about the brand snobbery. There’s a lot of fools spending large sums on fancy brands; I saw a post recently from someone wild camping for the very first time on Dartmoor, and he had bought a Hilleberg Soulo! 🤦 I’m intrigued by the Taihang; it looks really nice!!
The Lanshan tents are simply brilliant. I have a 1 and a 2 and have complete faith in them 👍
Totally agree! My Lanshan out-performed my mate's Big Agnes Copper Spur - that costs twice as much - on the Cleveland Way last summer
Great video. Was considering getting one for this year to replace my heavy Banshee 300 and this has confirmed my decision.
Thanks! I'm really pleased that it helped you; good luck with the tent, and check out my pitching and modifications videos; they'll help a lot :-)
Make sure you get the 4 season inner - the mesh 3 season one is freezing if there’s a cool breeze
Fantastic video. I have the two pro because I am mainly in warmer weather, but will definitely incorporate a lot of these ideas. no idea what the mini loop is used for on the inside of the tent in the side. I am thinking that when you unzip the door, you could pull it inside the tent and then have it clip to that little loop. This way it would not flap and you would be in control of everything inside the tent. On a sidenote, I would love to see a three come out and potentially where you have the tie outs on the outside with those little poles… Imagine if they included two larger poles and more fabric on the side so that the walls go more straight up.this would give a whole lot more room on the inside. There’s gotta be an easy way to do that. Still making it sturdy in the wind. Two thumbs up and I subbed because I love the ideas so much.
Thanks! I’m very happy that you liked the video and my suggestions. My inner has a ‘J’ shaped zip and so there’s no door on the side where ‘mystery’ zip is. That’s an interesting idea for a Lanshan 3. I have often thought about a Lanshan 1.5 that uses 2 poles but is narrower and lighter than the 2
Would this tent be OK for 2 smaller people
It’s up to you. Check the dimensions and the size of your sleeping pads.
Clips and bunges too? Can I have some feedback.
I think all the information you’re looking for is in the video description. Good luck
Carbon fibre poles. Where's the best place to get them for the purpose of this tent.?
Check out the comments below; whilst the exact ones I used are no longer available, there are several alternatives. I suggested in April an alternative source: www.bearbonesbikepacking.co.uk/product/pole-a-bear-carbon-lifter-poles
Hi There Anthony Evans here. I've just bought lanshan 2 double wall tent. I'm thinking your amazing. An I'm going to follow you until I become a leader. Eat sleep hit your wisdom knowhow and experience with the lanshan 2. Keep up the good work.
Thanks mate 😊
Nice ..have you had any micro spikes with you just in case?
Definitely. Even though there wasn’t much snow, you can never tell how the conditions might change.
Nice adventure.
Yes it was!
Yes my mate and met you in that little wind break on your way down, interesting conversation.....it was cold and blustery.
Nice to hear from you! It was good to chat on High Raise, just a shame that the conditions weren't exactly warm and balmy! Hope you had a good day anyway.
Great video I camped in a similar spot last summer at Stickle Tarn. Was a lot busier then. Enjoyed watching. Atb mate
Thanks mate. I've checked out your vids too; nice work!
Ugh, my biggest pet peeve are those days where you keep trudging mile after mile trying to find somewhere to pitch the bloody thing. I had a 'mare coming off the northeast ridge of Pumlumon last summer, the ground was just lumpy, waterlogged, ankle-deep in moss and tussocks. By the time I came off the hillside and down to anything resembling a pitch I'd walked about 5 miles more than intended!
I know that ridge! And it’s always when you are running out of daylight, too, eh? Then there’s the dreaded ‘twist or stick’ dilemma when you spot a possible pitch… My nightmare scenario is spotting a much better place 100metres further along the trail
I really enjoyed watching your trip. I cannot believe I haven't found your channel before now. Just subbed and looking forward to watching more of your adventures. Cheers, Paul.
Thanks Paul; it's nice to hear from you!
I’m sure you feel very proud of that trip Charles, a break in the weather and taking your chances , parts unknown which does make for a better adventure. Thanks for sharing as certainly was an enjoyable watch. Inspiring, I do have an itch to get to the Lakes and would like to set out on the Lakeland way from Windamere and keep going until I’ve had enough. Northamptonshire, I imagined you were further south, I’m in Leicester so Northampton is like well you’re a southerner 😁😂 Anyway cheers and ATB 🥃🏕️👍
Thanks Dave! As one 'Southener' to another; I'm pleased that you enjoyed it! The Lakeland Way has caught my eye, too, as a tempting route for the summer
Very good one! Thanks for sharing! Hiking on soggy, bulky grounds can be very exhausting and to find a place to pitch as well. I'm glad you were still able to enjoy your time. You always look so happy and relaxed in your “home-from-home”, it makes me want to go immediately out wild camping. The weather was sometimes very dramatic and impressive, which I love. Nice start for 2025!
It’s great to hear from you again, and I’m so happy that you enjoyed the story. Your supportive comments always encourage me 🙂
@longsufferinghiker Aww thank you! This makes my day! Unfortunately, I haven't had much time for RUclips or wild camping in the last few months because I moved to the USA with my family. It's still very challenging. I'm happy that wild camping isn't forbidden here, but there are other things that you should be prepared for and that can be dangerous. That's why I plan to take a course with the rangers before I venture into the wilderness. I'll definitely catch up on all the videos from you that I haven't had a chance to see yet! I hope you have many more adventures and tip videos planned this year that I can look forward to.😊
I really enjoy watching you enjoy yourself out for an adventure. A natural in front of the camera! I was going to say i think you might be a Lake District good weather shaman - but then saw you had a nice bit of clag towards the end!! Thanks for a great video- cheers
Thanks mate; it’s really nice of you to say so 🙂
Love it - beautiful but cold. Thanks for sharing!
Cheers. Glad you enjoyed it
The man in the red suit brought me a chest pack the same as yours very impressed with it so far. Looking forward to more videos.
It’s great! Just watch out for the slot behind the front pocket; it’s easy to put things down there by mistake!
Brilliant stuff as always just a shame about the weather.we have camped on that exact spot at stickle tarn
Great minds...!!
My Atmos AG50 is built very much the same way, I'm looking at switching from it to the Exos 55. If you get annoyed trying to figure out which clips to use when the brain is on, just tuck the flap inside the pack and use the brain as the only lid.
Good tip. I have painted the clips for the flap orange, to avoid any confusion! 🙂
@longsufferinghiker that's a great idea actually. I have a yellow paint pen i could try. I'm legally blind. Fully in one eye and 80% blind in the other. Found i can follow a trail well enough but the little details are what really get me. I don't use the brain very often, usually in winter or if my kiddo is along; so I'll probably color its buckles. I went to put the brain back on and realized I'd unthreaded the top buckles instead of just unclipping them. 😄 felt like the biggest noob.
@syberphish 😂 that’s easily done. I admire you finding ways to carry on walking regardless. Chapeau
Is that a new sac Charles? You need to tighten the top tensioners as the sac is bouncing around a little too much. You were very lucky with the weather. Thanks for the inspiration 👍
Yes; a replacement Exos 58. I prefer the colour, but everything else is pretty much the same, apart from the hip belt pockets, which I find useless! I noticed the slack tensioners when I was editing the video; something to watch out for next time. Cheers
Yes, forgetting stuff happens every time for me and I’m not sure it’s entirely down to senility. On last week’s outing, I still hadn’t worked out what I’d forgotten by the time I got to the end of the trip. I probably ought to work from a list when packing as the old memory has never been as good as I like to think. Sorry to hear that you lost your microphone. I enjoyed your video because you showed a journey, going across the country and camping in different places, and having to plan so that you increase your chances of finding a good pitch. For me, that’s an essential part of backpacking.
Thanks; it's good to know that I'm not the only one who worries about senility! A replacement microphone (with a spare) has just arrived.
What things/modifications would you say should i do if all i worry about is safety in heavy storms in the mountains with cold temps? I'm quite a newbie....
Heavy storms? Mountains? Cold temps? - It all sounds quite challenging and TBH the Lanshan isn't really designed for those kind of conditions. If you are a relative newbie then consider a real 4 season tent, and best travel with a more experienced companion. Having said that, the key things for bad weather in the Lanshan are: 1. The main guylines and the pegs. Definitely replace them as I suggest, and possibly double them up, also. 2. The pegs supplied with the tent are lightweight and minimal. Best to replace them with bigger, longer alternatives. The ultimate are Deltas: deltagroundanchors.co.uk/ they aren't light, but they have fantastic holding power. 3. Make sure that it is pitched well, tight, with no creases or flapping. My pitching video will help: ruclips.net/video/Pt-QUHMw2v0/видео.html Good luck!
These are some really excellent mods!! I have a 1 pro with no inner but I look forward to adding a few of these where applicable to my own tent...cheers and thank you for sharing this!
It’s really great to hear that some of the ideas will help you. Thanks for letting me know!
Fantastic! It’s a beautiful place. I spent a week camping there in 1977.
It really is!
Hope you have 4 wonderful days out there! Enjoy and take care! I'm looking forward to the video and the stories you will tell 😊.
Enjoy!
Looking forward to seeing another great video 👍
Got a lanshan pro 2 for the holidays, I’m excited to make the modifications you have suggested in your videos
Amazing view, looks like a great site mate
Good fun. Hario drip with filters or aeropress will beat all of these. Next vid should be beer. I’d enjoy watching you try a dozen or so to determine the best😂
The little loop inside the tent, is for holding the innerdoor Open, using the outside tuggle. Sorry for Any misspelling
Yes, but on the inner with a ‘J’ zip there is no door on that side to be tied back, so the loop is redundant
Top man for filming this😊 Helped massively.
I’m really pleased to hear that 🙂
Which is better- Exeter and cornwall region or Swansea and Gower for hiking....????
Erm, that’s a tough one to answer. But Exeter & Cornwall have the South West Coast Path, plus Exmoor, which offers many miles of hiking. Try both!!
@longsufferinghiker thank you... I lived in Swansea for a year and I loved it. I love nature hiking was close by, beaches were close by...
@BasicBeachCommunity1 yes, I loved it too when I was at Swansea University. But a lot of The Gower is very popular and not very wild. Wild camping spots are hard to find…
