Grandad's Train Room
Великобритания
Добавлен 7 май 2023
Home to Beechcroft Model Railway, my retirement project.
Beechcroft is a large OO gauge layout with 5 running lines over 2 levels, complete with turntable, landscaping and various buildings including a large mainline station. It is DCC controlled via Z21.
I managed to convince my other half that the studio above our garage would be perfect for a model railway layout. The room measures 19’ x 17’ so plenty of space.
I’ve had train sets since a young lad but traded them in for a car stereo when I got my first set of wheels - what a big mistake that was!!
I started collecting again in the late 80’s but never had room for a layout….. until now.
There is still so much to do on the layout so please subscribe and join me as I continue the build!

Beechcroft Model Railway - #59. Pottering!!
#hornbyrailways , #modelrailways , #bachmann , #modeltrains , #oogauge
I’ve not had too much time in the train room this week so rather than tackle anything ‘big’ I’ve been pottering around doing some small details which always get left.
I do have a question though regarding my lighted Pullman coaches and whether it’s ok to have power to them all the time or whether I should have some isolated track sections for them to ‘rest’. I’m no electrical expert so any advice (in really simple language!!) would be greatly appreciated.
As always, Thank you for watching.

Beechcroft Model Railway -#58. I Can See The Finishing Line…
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.День назад
#hornbyrailways , #modelrailways , #bachmann , #modeltrains , #oogauge Another week has flown by - partly because I got distracted and didn’t stick to the plan!! My intention was to complete the scenics at the back of the Goods Yard but I was drawn towards the yard covering for the Brewery instead. I’m quite pleased with the outcome but I’m sure there’s more I can do to add more realism. Let me...
Beechcroft Model Railway - #57. How High??

#hornbyrailways , #modelrailways , #bachmann , #modeltrains , #oogauge A very ‘bitty’ week this last week. I’ve been at my daughters laying some decking for the last few days so not really had too much time up in the train room. A couple of trains have been running while I’ve been pottering about which does make a change! I have made some small progress in areas but not as much as I would have ...

#hornbyrailways , #modelrailways , #bachmann , #modeltrains , #oogauge Yes, I’m back working on the road to the goods yard!! I’ve revisited a technique I used last year for the area around the crossing signal box which somebody kindly suggested. It’s been a mammoth, time consuming task but it’s finally in place. All that’s needed now is some scenic dos and accessories for this area…. Hope you e...

#hornbyrailways , #modelrailways , #bachmann , #modeltrains , #oogauge Thank you so much for the feedback from last weeks video - I’ve so much to think about… So, I’m turning my attention this week to the brewery and creating a perimeter wall before I even contemplate a yard surface!! I’ve purchased some barrels and a loading platform. I think the platform may need extending and I’m no it yet s...

#hornbyrailways , #modelrailways , #bachmann , #modeltrains , #oogauge I’m having a bit of a nightmare this week!! Continuing work on the Goods Yard, I’m starting to look at the road to the Goods Shed. I’ve tried a DIY solution but without much success - maybe I’m just doing something wrong because I do quite like the finish? The embossed/textured cobblestone sheets have arrived but they have a...

#hornbyrailways , #modelrailways , #bachmann , #modeltrains , #oogauge Typically, I’ve left myself with another choice to make… remove the low relief factories or keep them!! I’m happy with how the factory backscene looks, just not sure if I need the low relief buildings there or not… I do have somewhere else in mind I could use them! I’ve also been busy making chimneys to go with the backscene...

#hornbyrailways , #modelrailways , #bachmann , #modeltrains , #oogauge I’ve been a bit under the weather so have taken a few days ‘off’ but I’m back now ready to continue work on the Goods Yard. As you will see, I’ve ordered a Backscene which unfortunately isn’t quite what I’m looking for - that’s the risk from buying via the internet I guess. I can’t believe a simple Backscene can cause so muc...
Beechcroft Model Railway - #51. Mini Heatwave helping out!
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.2 месяца назад
#hornbyrailways , #modelrailways , #bachmann , #modeltrains , #oogauge Well, the mini heatwave this last week has meant I’ve had some time to spend in the garden, but I’ve also done some ballasting - the warm weather really helps the water/PVA to dry quick. The weather didn’t last so I’ve been able to do some work on the buildings for the goods yard. They are nearly ready to place on the layout...

#hornbyrailways , #modelrailways , #bachmann , #modeltrains , #oogauge I’m always on the lookout for a bargain… I’ve found these laser cut kits on eBay at a really good price, much cheaper than any of the resin kits out there. The kits allow you to put your own finish on them so I’m going to play around with different brick colours to see what I can achieve. Let me know what you think - do they...

Hi - love the layout and your attention to detail. Could you tell me where you get the 4 bar wooden fencing from? Thanks
It’s looking fantastic. Can I ask in a previous video where you created the yard road with foam underlay, what underlay did you use and what thickness is it? Cheers Ian.
Hi, love the railway and the trains you run. A couple of thoughts for you. The headshunt in the goods yard would be perfect for an engine shed, as the main shed is not close. Also, the goods shed seems a bit small relative to the other buildings and the colour is very different. I would have thought a bigger shed would give the space more gravitas! 4:35
Thanks very much. The different colour has always niggled me! The space there is so limited that’s the only shed I could find to fit (unless I tried scratch building!!). As for an engine shed I didn’t think there was enough room but after reading your suggestion I’ve gone back and measured and can fit a small one in. Watch this space… 👍
Anything that is turned on i.e. Pullman coaches will definitely pull current. As for longevity, if the lights are the traditional incandescent globes then isolating the track to prolong the life of globes would be a good idea! if they're LED then I wouldn't worry!
Fab. Thank you for that. 👍
If the lights in the carriages are LEDs it's not a problem as the current drain is very small. If they are some sort of incandescent bulb the heat buildup around them might be a fire hazard.
Thank you. Useful to know 👍
Excellent Andy. All coming along nicely, superb detail 👌 ATB to you.Stuart
Thanks Stuart. Regards Andy 👍
Its really good watching you and your work,i seem to spend a long time looking at what i want to do then when im up to starting it i change my mind lol.
Thank you. I also have a tendency to start something and then change my mind!
This layout is FANTASTIC! First rate modelling imo. 👍🙂
Thanks very much 😊
The ol ?of peace of mind. POM. I shunt the coaches into a dead siding as in reality when stabled the lights would be off, except say when cleaning/ maintenance being carried out. Brewery, I’d say less is more & open areas like you have were a reality. Uncluttered. Freedom of movement saved time & £. Despite the staith a lorry can be backed straight up to a wagon. Uncoupling & shunting made easier. Perhaps just stick a beware of trains sign on adjacent wall. After all you are modelling the era where common sense reigned. Layout is looking really good in 1D, must be a real delight in 3D. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks very much. Some really useful ideas and info. Really appreciated 👍
It’s looking great, giving me som great ideas. Out of curiosity what is the rural photo backdrop you’ve got for the brewery & goods shed sidings area?
Thanks very much. All the backscenes, the rural areas and the factory front are from ID Backscenes. I just searched online - quite a lot of model shops stock them and also a good few available on eBay. 👍
Do the carriages not have a decoder board of any kind? If so, you could switch them off using that. LEDs use very, very little electricity, so I don't think they will impact your quarterly bill, they also last a very long time. It is the OCD in you that wants them off, I know how you feel.
That’s good to know. I think you’re right! 😀
Every time you post a new video it looks better and better 😊😊😊😊
Thanks very much 😊
Great progress Andy, yes extend the fencing in the brewery yard and don't forget some 'Beware of Trains' signs at the access points.
Very good point! Thank you 👍
Great progress Andy. Fence - No Fence? I am in the pro-fence lobby with the gaps like you said and perhaps some of those sleeper paths from one gap to another.... I cannot think of any reason other than it would look nice maybe and offer areas for little cameos like two shunters having a yarn, the brewery apprentice tasked with painting it etc. I also thought the other suggestion below to have a cameo of the security fence was a great idea too. Keep the videos coming they will be so useful for me when I finally get the chance to build Grandad's Train Room 2.0
Thanks very much. Great ideas. I will be looking forward to hearing about your progress when you do start 👍
Great wee video, i think fencing adds definition to a layout, and a brewery would either be surrounded by a wall or fencing.
Thank you 👍
i subscribed u channal i am building an english modelrailway here in netherlands and have also 5 of those coaches so far i dont notice much of huge power drain so far but thads maybe caused by i have only 2 trains so far in my colecktion and running although both has sounds on
Thank you. That’s really good to know. Good luck with your build 👍
To give that wall a bit of height, why not put some shrubbery/trees behind it. It'll also help the backdrop to blend in. I really enjoy your channel, your layout looks amazing.
Thanks very much. That’s a good idea 👍
Hi. As for the coach lighting or anything else on the layout I use a 13a socket adapter. Remote Control Plug Socket,13A/3120W Wireless Light Switch 30M/100ft Operating Range for Household Appliances, 5 Pack Sockets and 2 Remotes. If you do need a 5 pack there are smaller packs available.
Brilliant. Thanks very much 👍
Coming along nicely Andy, looks great. Byvthe tunnel mouths, id be tempted to put a wing wall in then meet the fencing to that. With brewey, i dont think you'll need to fence it all in, the whole yard is gated, and you already walled the front of the brewery
Thank you. Like the wing wall idea and I think you’re right about the fencing 👍
The railway looks GREAT. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Thanks very much 👍
Looking great, pullmans are a disease, ask me how i know...😊 isolating tracks are a good thought. They don't draw much, but it may save you from needing an extra booster
Thanks very much. I guess you’ve had issues!! I am thinking isolated tracks would be best 👍
Great update all looking good, I think a small (see through) fence between the brewery and rails would look ok. Attention to detail is second to none, keep it up as for the coach lights I'm still `old school` DC so its not an issue for me as such but I have isolated sections with plastic fishplates so I can run serval trains on the same track (although wiring is a nightmare lol) so if you have storage sidings I would just isolate with plastic fishplate on one rail with a switch. Many thanks for sharing regards Barry.👍
Brilliant. Thanks Barry 👍
Ahhh, more of those Pullman coaches that look like they have a giant penguin at each window looking out 😃
Ha. I’ll never look at them in the same way now!! 😃
Great video. It caming along great. Its your layout. You please yourself. To me it all looks great. I did have a layout in our loft but cold and drafty in the winter 🥶❄️ and to 🥵 in the summer. Then son number 2 came along. I did try to make my layout so a oil turmoil. As i did work for many happy years at ici north tees works up here in Cleveland Cleveland Cleveland
Thanks. I’m lucky now that the kids have grown and moved on, and no work to get in the way! 👍
Hi, I'm not whizz on electrics but I would isolate a siding to store your coaches. Regards John
Brilliant John. Thank you. Andy 👍
Brilliant update As for the fencing by in the yard All depends what years your modelling Health and safety was non existent till about the 50s lol ATB Sion
Thanks Sion. That’s a very good point! 👍
Just remember that variety is the spice of life!
Very true!
Good to see another video. Run the fence to the tunnel mouth it will be fine. No fence behind the Colliery The layout is looking great. I know nothing about lights in carriages. But lights in coaches are often left on during the day and if they have to be on all the time because of power going to the track so be it.
Thanks very much 😊
With trains sitting in sidings for hours its a good idea to isolate them. more to protect the decoders rather than the lights, the led lights have a much better lifespan than the old globes and dont really draw much power, regards
Really helpful. Thank you 😊
Another interesting video good to see other parts of your layout with trains running a good question about the lights on all the time I to would like to know the answer to that too cheers
Thanks very much. Hopefully someone knowledgeable will be able to help!! 😊
Good see you put vid out on channel keep up the good video thanks lee
Thanks very much 😊
Hi I have many sidings with an isolation switch so that my locos are not powered when not in use. I haven’t any lit carriages (yet) but I would set them up in a siding I can shut down when not in use. Cheers Peter from downunder.
Thanks Peter. Really good to know. I like that idea. Cheers, Andy 👍
The layout is looking pretty good. As an alternative to installing the security fencing around the brewery. you could have a lorry with fencing on it and a crew of guys installing the fence posts for the fence. It tells a story and saves a little work. plus if you don't like it, later you can change it around by adding the fence in spots to show progress.
Yes! An interesting cameo scene 👍
Having trouble sleeping Andy 😊.
😂. Can you tell!!
Great job Andy, can I ask where you got that foam board at all? Thinking about using it for a few projects myself. Please let me know kind regards Callum.
Hi Callum. Thanks. Found it on eBay listed as ‘300mmx300mm by 3mm thick 15of. Carving foam XPS foam sheets’. Tried to copy the link but it wouldn’t work. If you search 3mm XPS Foam Sheet it should bring it up 👍
@@Grandadstrainroom-pn3tt okay that’s great thank you, keep up the good work with the videos. 👍🏻
Well, that's me subscribed 🙂Love the idea with the foam sheet cobbles. I wish I'd seen this technique when I'd started my harbour scene! Great stuff.
Thanks very much 😊
As always, a great job 👍👍 Such talent and skill 😍😍
Thank you 😊
I was hoping for the streamlined version! 😢
Ha. Do you know, that’s one loco I don’t have…. Yet!
@@Grandadstrainroom-pn3tt I noticed! Interesting since you have some A4s, which I don't blame you as they're the best British Loco ;)
I used hedging along my back edge from K and M trees.
Thank you. That’s good to know 👍
I think what you have done with the foam board looks superb. I understand it will take longer to produce but, think of it as an ‘investment’ as you will be looking at it for any years to come. Ultimately the choice of course is yours.
Thanks. It’s something I might look at again in the future! 👍
Could the security fence posts be shortened and attached to the top of the wall?
I did wonder if that might work! 👍
Don't stress about the brewery yard 'security'. The wall is fine with no fencing or interpretation of higher security. GW
Thank you. I do seem to overthink things sometimes! 👍
Pop to a DIY shop & look at textured wall paper. There are a few that make very good cobbles.
Thanks. Didn’t know that 👍
The more I see of it the better it looks keep up the good work 😊😊
Thanks very much 😊
Great video it's changing all the time and progress is amazing great ideas looks so good maybe the back wall needs to be a bit higher to identify the change to goods yard to break the back scene slightly or even add some of the security fencing to it
Thanks very much for the ideas. Really appreciated 👍
Model U sells guttering and down pipes, which you might be interested in
Brilliant. Thank you for that 👍
Really enjoying your posts 😊 Great to other folks techniques and thought processes. Regarding the wall height, had you considered some spiked-top railings mounted on top? Might be a bit more inkeeping with the brewery style?
Thank you. Not thought of that - they could look quite effective 👍
Fantastic update mate so like thr brewery makes me really want a bigger shed can't wait to see more 😀 👍🏼
Thanks very much 😊👍
Hi regardless of security guards overnight or not your fencing tops with barbed wire must face inwards and not outward. Hope this is of some guidance. Regards John
Hi John. Thanks very much for that. I didn’t know but if I do opt for them I’ll get them the right way round. Andy. 👍
good update on layout keep up the cool work
Cheers 👍
