How to Merge beehives / colonies - Using newspaper
How to combine and merge beehives and colonies to be united. Using newspaper is a really simple and effective way to join hives. This is the way we do it and works for us. You can however also combine hives vice-versa but that’s for another time and has a little different technique. This video is for the queenless hive at the top and Queen right at the bottom.
If slowly moving the hive, I do say 4-5 days for each movement. This can be done more often but the bees will get a little annoyed and rightly so, hence the take it easy approach depending on situation!

Bees making a mess of waxed plastic foundation? How I fix it without adding more!

This video shows what I do to encourage the bees to draw plastic wax coated foundation frames. When the bees start to build bad burr and wild comb on them when in the hive. Plastic foundation can sometimes be a nightmare, most of the time it just needs more wax but when you pay out for premium coated frames It's a little annoying when the bees don't take to them very well. When a hive is being a little suspicious and the Queen stops laying panic sets in! Read the frames and it should tell a story but bees will be bees and nothing is too certain. With the Queen not laying and the weather being "well British" bees can be under some strain and the Queen can in some cases stop laying. But the hive/frame signs changed after a few days as you will see in this video. Fr...

When to think about putting supers on in early spring. *Read description.

Spring honey flow and supering the hive giving room to the colonies is important, so there is enough space for the bees to continue building. By monitoring the hives giving more space will also deter swarming at this early stage in spring. But make sure the bees have food stores in the brood box by hefting/lifting the hive for a good idea of weight "if you can't do inspections depending on weat...

Hi, did you do a follow up to this?
Hi there, I don’t think I did. 🐝
The one bee be like “where is everyone “
Hah 😎
Why dont you want older larvae in an emergency cell ? Is it just because it wont turn into a Queen ?
Normally they’re not very good queens as having not being fed royal jelly at an earlier stage for better development. 🐝
Thanks for your reply however the choice of the open cell could have been considered essential information to pass on which could have contributed to a greater chance of success. I accept however that you did complete this manipulation successfully with your choice of capped cell
🐝
Once the Queen was found you should have put her in a Queen cage to allow an unhindered inspection of the remains frames. I note your Queen made it onto the very frame you intended to split off. You were lucky to notice her otherwise your manipulation would have failed
Hi there, yes lots of things could be different in any situation with bees. I filmed the situation as it unfolded and the equipment I brought with me. All went well and a very successful outcome with the cells chosen. 😎
Why destroy the Queen cell which was not fully capped. It’s the only Queen cell you know for sure was not made from a larvae that was 4 days or less old
I just chose the best out of the capped on that situation and film, you can as you say go for an uncapped so you know you have a larvae but I stuck with my guns on this demonstration in using Queen cells. If I cover everything in one video it would be 3 days long and nothing else to film after the fact. Everyone has different techniques and ideas. Plus when you have multiple hives you can play. Thanks for watching 🐝😊
After the honey is extracted, place 2 or 3 wet super combs over an inner cover. The bees will clean out the wet cells. After 3 to7 days, cells should be dry. Shake or brush bees from combs, place 10 in empty box. Put more wet combs onto cover. I had built a small insect tight chamber/ box, large enough for 40+ medium supers. Seal up door with gasketed seal and secured by 8 bolts and wing nuts. Cold weather will keep them at the ready for next honey season. I did this for over 20 years with 12 to 14 colonies in Montana.
Hi Robert, sounds a lot of effort but if that works for you great stuff! Wet supers bees take no time to clean so no problems there as you know, but the difference is the weather here in miserable England. It’s very wet and damp and where we are it’s not cold enough to be confident in keeping those supers in good dry condition. Hence the plastic tubs, they work really well for us and stack in a secure dry area. You will be surprised how many frames fit in each box ‘not 40 though lol.’ Thanks for comment. 🐝😊
Add more wax
Not necessarily, this happens with natural wax foundation also. This method works for us every time no matter the type of frame. 🐝🐝
I would be concerned that the temp gets to high (above 370*F), at this temp OA becomes Formic acid. Also, I’ve tried using high temp silicone tubing on the tip of my OA vaporizer, I works well for one or two treatments but quickly get blocked up by OA crystallization.
Hi there, I use the device for a couple of hives then stopped to let it cool down and refill the caps. I think just be sensible with things like this not having a temp gage. The tube does work but as you say can get blocked a little, I just use a stick to clear. Nice bit of kit though, for the money. 🐝
Do you scrap off the stuff on top of the bars and under the top cover so that the cover fits on tightly? Or is there some other reason? Thanks for such great videos!
Hi and thank you for your nice comment. Scrapping the wax of the top bars and crown boards just helps with fitting and that you don’t squish more bees. They will more than likely make more brace comb, it’s just helping to clean it up for your ease. 🐝
@@berintanbees Awesome, thanks for this! I'll be looking through your other vids, I really like how gentle you are and how you show/explain all the little yet important things.
That’s really nice of you to say, we love our bees. 🐝😊
Love them dark queens
Lovely aren’t they 🐝
Gimme
lol 🐝
So they dont....drown?
Yeah, bees drawn quite easily unfortunately so using floatable things and shallow water just helps them out. 🐝
Other creators have suggested to avoid adding an excluder until after combs are drawn.
Hi, there are lots of ways to get them to draw comb. I find this to be the fastest way for me 🐝
Brilliant 😮🤩🕯️🐝☕️🚬

This video was very helpful, thanks! We do bee keeping on the rooftop of our office in the netherlands with 2 hives and are in the same situation. Last week we donated brood from the healthy hive to the queenless hive. And now we wait!
Hi there, thank you. Beekeeping on a rooftop, that’s fantastic! Yes it’s the waiting and hoping they sort themselves out. Hope all goes well for you. 🐝
Its always great when the bees manage to raise a new queen with a bit of help from the beekeeper. By the way how are you planning to keep your colonies over winter, single brood, doubke brood etc. i tried brood and a half last year, it worked, but a bit messy in the spring. Ta
Hi, it’s an amazing thing every time when a queen is successful. I like to keep to single brood boxes. I’ve also used brood and a half but not really keen on it. 🐝
Excellent video! Nicely Edited too!
Thank you very much 🐝
Looks great nice mild bees too. Thank you.
Thanks, yes they are really good 🐝
I always check for queen cells on the other frames as I have given a hopelessly queenless hive that only had capped brood a frame of young larvae, they moved the larvae over a couple of frames and made a queen cell.
Yes they’re sneaky little whatsits sometimes, always best to double check. 🐝
🧡👍👍👍
🐝🐝😊
Love it I use them too to make nucs I don’t like swarms but I love getting cells
There great to use especially when you have a good choice 🐝
I really like the old method, wax and wood. Plus, if you want to harvest some bee bread how do you do that with these plastic frames? Just my own preference I suppose!
Hi, yes I use both and I do prefer the traditional frames a little more. But these are easy when they work and have a lot going for them in different elements. With bee bread situation you can just scrape to the plastic frame. 🐝
I have a hive which been queenless for long time and thinking to queen it from another hive by taking its queen can i do that? and is it ok if these two hives were near each other?
Hi, I don’t see a problem with using a queen as long as she is introduced properly “I have videos on this. ” But reading that your hive has been queenless for a long time is troubling, as they can develop laying workers. The hive will then not accept a queen so easily, I would strongly recommend putting a frame of eggs in that hive asap. This will tell you what the situation is and all being well they will draw cells. 🐝
@@berintanbees what if there was no larvae at all?
The problem is how long it’s been queenless, with no brood. This is when they develop a laying worker. They will lay multiple eggs in cells dotted around (drone). I would still recommend using a frame of eggs just to be on the safe side. You could also buy a queen, but that could be an expense if failed. But they are your hives so it’s your decision. Hope this helps. 🐝
@@berintanbees great advice thank you!
Feeding syrup clears up chalkbrood
When bees invert sucrose to dextrose and fructose a byproduct is hydrogen peroxide, which is anti bacterial and anti fungal. If you need a better explanation watch the Bob binnie video on feeding bees.
Thanks for the comments, great advice but for this hive the Queen had been failing and was mostly the course of the issue. 🐝

The 4 minutes mark, you might wonder if queen emerges in that hive next time you inspect same hive. Unfortunately it happened to me a couple of years ago. It can be hard to concentrate, thanking you for your reply
Thanks for reply, I do believe I got them all. There is always a slight risk. I’ll do a follow up anyway with all this. 🐝
There's one frame you didn't shake!
Oh what one was that? 🧐
I did that to mine but drone season is over, now I have virgin queens in 3 or 4 hives. Big operation ahead to save those bees ☹
We still have drones here and many still capped. Hopefully all will be well, just a shame we’ve lost one of our best Queens. Hope you resolve your situation 🐝
I always add a frame of partially drawn honey into every new super.
It’s a good idea especially for new colonies 🐝
Wow!!
🐝🐝😊
Nicely done👍
Why thank you 😊
That's a great method for helping out a hive that's slow to draw comb. And it's important to note that particular hives will be strong comb builders which can be utilized by the beekeeper. I "paint" an extra layer of wax on plastic foundation which definitely helps the bees get started. The time of year is also very important: a strong nectar flow or supplemental feeding is a crucial element.
There are quite a few ways to encourage the bees to build but I do find this is one of the fastest ways for them to kick in a gear. And yes Absolutely depends on the nectar flow and elements 🐝😊
First can i please get a pin
🐝📍
Hi from Texas.
Hi from England 🐝
Hi, Just a quick question, I had a very calm hive which I have recently split and now both hives have become very agressive. Is this normal? And will they calm down when the new queen takes control of one of them?
Lots of things can trigger a hive to turn, sometimes it sort’s itself out. I find when a hive has no queen they can be more on edge. Once the new hive settles down with a new queen see how they are with the new generation. The weather can affect them also, look for robbing going on there are so many variables. If your hive posits being nasty you may want to re Queen. Give them a little time 🐝
We use an A3 sheets of white paper. Place a sheet in the bottom base with drawing pins. Burn after use.
Oh interesting, would that not get destroyed being paper? There’s so much rain and wind here, paper wouldn’t last a minute! We don’t just use them for varroa, we put them in the hives when there are wind storms also. 🐝
@@berintanbees We only leave it in for 48hrs after ox, then count, having said that we make all our own kit so we have slightly deeper bases. I think it's a type of sketching paper (quite a hard surface). Great vids by the way.
Sounds like a nice idea for a short time like you say. And thank you very much 🐝
Replace the queen
Will monitor and see but they have kicked into gear now, I like to give them a chance as the weather has been abysmal this spring. 🐝
Do you feel it also prudent to put some sugar syrup on them after swapping a couple of frames around? Often this triggers the queen into action & pollen collection ramps up to produce bee bread since honey is in supply.
Hi, the reason I didn’t is we are now in the honey flow and the weather has gotten better so they are able to bring in the goods. If using new undrawn frames you could use syrup, I just like the bees to try to sort themselves a little. 🐝
I stopped watching as soon as he turned the queen cell upside down.
👍
This looks the exact same as my colony. My queen is 2022.
🐝😊
@@berintanbeesI just messaged you on Instagram 👍
Just seen and replied 🐝
Girls? It looks like brood? Am I right? Or it is honey?
That’s honey, you normally tell by the capping, and weight. Honey bees are female and drones are male. 🐝
This is last winters honey! I find it very helpful to take that out to make room for nectar which bees much prefer in spring.
Indeed but it’s really nice to see they have been strong over the winter months as our weather has been horrendous. 🐝
@@berintanbees oh I agree!
