The home of Uncomfortable Conversations with Josh Szeps.
The world has never been more connected. Yet never more divided. We yell at each other from inside our echo chambers. But change doesn’t happen inside an echo chamber. It’s time to get out, to stretch our legs, to step on some land mines. It's time to have an uncomfortable conversation, with Josh Szeps.

“Multiculturalism in the UK” with Foreign Minister Alexander Downer
Outside Australia, Alexander Downer is best known as the diplomat who kicked off the Mueller Investigation by alerting the FBI that one of Trump’s advisors, George Papadopoulos, said the Russians had dirt on Hillary Clinton over drinks in London. Downer was Australia’s ambassador to the UK at the time.
Inside Australia, Downer is a household name. He is the most consequential Foreign Minister in decades (what Americans call the Secretary of State), serving for over a decade during 9/11 and the Iraq War. As a senior government minister in the Five Eyes alliance, he was influential in formulating Western countries' response to ISIS and jihadism. Most recently, he was Australia’s ambassador t...

“Why We’re Divided” with Jon Yates
Просмотров 544День назад
Our societies are more diverse than ever, yet we spend more of our time with people just like us. Are we losing a sense of common life? Maybe the far left and the far right aren't the cause of our division, but a consequence of it? Jon Yates is an entertaining, whip smart writer and activist who studies how to build a more united society. He says the problem is not that we're different from eac...

Are we too focused on race? Have recent anti-racist movements like Black Lives Matter abandoned the ‘colourblind’ spirit of the original civil rights movement? Coleman Hughes is an American writer, podcaster and public intellectual known for his criticism of modern social-justice ideas about racism and racial inequality. In this live Festival Of Dangerous Ideas edition of Uncomfortable Conversa...

"The debate over free speech, hate speech, online harms, algorithms and social media is tangling us up in knots. Let’s get back to first principles, because our ability to survive the 21st century depends on it." So wrote Josh in Australia's top newspapers on the weekend, linked below. He had gotten into a stoush on the national TV panel show Q A with Australia's eSafety Commissioner, whom Elon...
“Cancel Culture at the NY Times” with Andy Mills

Andy is the producer The Witch Trials of J.K. Rowling and previously of the New York Times' groundbreaking podcast The Daily. During the riots and racial reckoning after the killing of George Floyd, newsrooms were roiled by existential questions: Should journalists be activists? Do white male journalists hide behind "objectivity" to impose their bias? Do they get coddled by media companies who ...

Very interesting. Thank you:)
u for clarifying the situation we Jews ...are in NOW
Tim is just amazing in everything he does
Great stuff mate. Quality interview
I'd say the problem goes beyond lack-of-integration. There's even a kind of reverse integration enforced. Whereby British organizations are expected to adapt to accommodate other cultures, and to conspicuously celebrate them. And any criticism of multiculturalism is derided as racism.
THIS 👆
Lol Downer certainly is one of the most consequential Australian politicians in that he was foreign minister when Australia illegally spied on the Timor Lese government so that Woodside petroleum could better exploit them in negotiations over the Timor Gap oil fields. Of course it seemed strange that a nation state would commit international crimes to the benefit of a private company until Downer, after retiring from politics, took on a cushy consulting job for said company. The Australian government then charged the Asio whistleblower who leaked the scandal, along with his lawyer, under the intelligence act... Very consequential...
That's to be expected from the nepo from the Adelaide Establishment.
its such a shame a man of his standing and experience didn't bother to look at the nature of immigration, particularly from the subcontinent. They were brought to the UK for decades to specifically do the jobs, and the shifts, that nobody wanted to do. The night shift in the British factories was even called the "p@ki shift". They were marginalised for decades, and often weren't even allowed to rent/buy in areas other than those which became enclaves. Very similar to red lining in the US. And yet still many many "asian" immigrants did end up integrating. I am not saying England doesnt have problems, and the culture has not changed, and I think the more recent immigration issues are pathetically mismanaged. But Downer really should at least do a little bit of research before making these huge generalisations.
should they have been brought?
@@wristygymnast1384 yep. That's really what it boils down to.
@@Steve-xl1en I’m not sure this changes his arguments much though. It can simultaneously be true that it was a good idea to import workers from overseas. And that they were hardworking people. But that they were not well integrated culturally. As I understand it: More metropolitan and middle-class Pakistanis generally do integrate fairly well into the UK. But poorer people from the tribal regions generally do not. And are massively overrepresented in all sorts of heinous criminal activity.
@@andybrice2711 no. They should have returned.
I enjoyed this interaction
Josh, you are our own Lex Fridman ...articulate, fair, probing. You are expanding and challenging our world views . Thank you.
80% of them don't care???? 60% of the 80% say....."I've never told anyone this but........" An insight into an experience that we all can have...Indigenous societies have a natural connection to ‘Source’, their ancestors, to country and Spirit. Their connection is part of their belief systems, and it becomes a natural part of their daily life at an early age. In a Christian Society you are brought up to believe that the “Great Fearful Man” upstairs will knock you down with a single blow if you mention Past Lives. You are expected to consult men in long dresses, who know feck all about the reality that is you as a human. there are moments where “that which can be known but not told..there is knowledge that cannot be explained” may appear.........
Was there a single dangerous idea mentioned here? I'm somewhat insulted by the branding: this is really mainstream stuff.
Interesting conversation Josh. But i found it fairly frustrating. Jon starts by pointing to societies development from hunter gatherers to farmers to factory workers, without looking deeper to understand that is where the roots of division lay. The conversation advances to the "choice problem"(The Matrix) without, once again, without looking deeper to understand why people make different choices. Imo the root to both of these inquiries start at the fact we're a product of our environment. As each environment is different it shapes difference in thinking. This produces different choices. This produces different societies. This is where Jon comes in with his potential reasoning & solution without dealing with the foundational dilemma. You can only make choices upon your understanding of the environment & society you find yourself. If those chiices go against someone from another environment a resolution must be found. If that's usable to be reached violence has been the historical solution to the problem. The stronger force of violence generally dictates the choice to be made. And on we continue in the same behavioral patterns as any species of aggressive primate never able to bridge the stupid choices that divide.
Most informed, thoughtful, unalarmed and substantive interview of Coleman I have ever seen.
For the algorithm
Great interview. I think the interviewer do a great job steel manning the progressive viewpoint to make good questions.
The poorer Mormons who mix with richer ones still have a huge commonality, the Church. And they trust each other much more inherently because of this connection.
So why occupy the land of others and invite a retaliation for the horrendous occupation and segregation meated to the 🍉 . Beggars believe how the oppressor is ALWAYS the victim!!!! Money is KING!!! Long live Satan 🎉 Forget Humanity!!! Money IS KING 🎉
I am such a fan girl for Mr Minchin ❤
I always listen through the podcast but you convinced me that I should check out Jon's red hair. I love your show Josh and the banter was great in this episode. It gave me a lot to think about. As a parent I'm often tempted to put my child in a private school, but it seems it might be good for them to be around many different children. I'll definitely keep this conversation in mind.
Why are the views so low on your show, Josh? It's great content. I smell a rat...
What a wonderful and thought provoking conversation. Thank you both
Loved this chat, thankyou genteel men...
David Baddiel in the audience!
Didn't see him! I like his brain.
Coleman is a great and a true intellectual. Thanks for the talk.
The first dude asking a question, what a pathetic, self-important dickhead (I hope he reads this).
You did the acknowledgement. Well done, Josh ...
Little weird that this is a different conversation than the one on the audio pod, but they’re making many of the same points. So did they just have this same convo in different cities?
fantastic conversation, thanks for posting. Shoe sponsor?
Great conversation. Thanks Josh for sharing it here!
Eventually I hope. Coleman is a cool guy.
Love Coleman. Thank you for posting this conversation, Josh!
After well over a decade of discussion about reparations it still seems that you are making A pay B for what C did to D.
I'm not sure about this "white countries have to be multicultural but black countries don't" thing. "White countries" often ARE multicultural and people want that recognised and respected in society and law. It is up to "black countries" to decide what they want to do, but they contend with less multiculturalism, or possibly less skin-colour related multiculturalism. This seems so trivially obvious I'm surprised Josh isn't pushing back.
I think I have a man-crush on Coleman. No homo!
Hey Guys, love your fashion choices. One thing thou, I'm afraid on Joshs shirt there are one or two buttons that suffer from a fundamental lack of meaning in their existence.
Coleman Hughes is a national treasure. Josh, we gotta work on some thumbnails and intros.
Second Question: David Baddeil just happens to be in the audience.
I am so curious about the guy who spent more time introducing the question than asking it. I wish Coleman would get it over e-mail and fully answer it :)
And publish it! I felt sorry for that guy. He was, I think, overwhelmed to the point that he could not express himself clearly. I sensed that while Coleman didn't want to cut him off, the gentleman was so extremely rambling and discursive that it seems unlikely that his written questions would be much more clear. I hope that I am wrong, that Coleman reads and responds to an excellent clear set of questions.
Making more money from right leaning folk Josh? And yet still demonising right wing thinking, good on ya flog
Why do you consider Coleman to be right-wing?
way to ignore all of the arguments being made. Have you called Coleman a coconut yet?
@@TessaTickle why would I? Only black liberals call black conservatives coconuts you genius
@@StrangerInAustralia I don't know his stance on all issues but I think he is probably best known for has rationalisation against BLM. A right wing position. Do you think so?
@@Sam-ir2te I haven't heard his full position on that matter. But, does one right-wing stance render him as "right leaning folk"?
I lived in Australia for 25 years, and it is the most racist country on Earth. I now live abroad and have travelled the world. Thank God I left that totalitarian society.
symbols, for the symbol minded
Almost everybody rolls their eyes having ‘welcome to country’ imposed upon them knowing it’s just a hollow virtue signal in au.
How long has it been around? It's fairly new to the U.S. and some regions would never do this.
@@wallywallywa it’s been building over the past ten years, but when our current government was elected, its everywhere now. You can’t visit any government funded institution’s website without seeing a pop up of a land acknowledgment before entering the site. It’s also in the footer of all government emails and a lot of businesses. And before most commencement of gatherings, it is everywhere and you can’t escape seeing or hearing it on very nearly every occasion, we have had enough of it.
@@wallywallywa I know that my eyes roll when I hear it at the beginning of my meditation group. It was helpful to hear CH articulate how frustrating it is to hear a universally terrible species trait attributed to European colonizers. OTOH, I get that there is abundant trauma that results from colonization. For me, at this point, it simply registers as slinging of racial guilt, shuts me down, renders me slightly less sympathetic.
Sorry, enough is enough.
If you keep that "symbolism" you are continuing to admit your wrong doing and will never move on as you will never be forgiven. I one ever shows the wrong doing of the accusing parties war breaks out. Victimisation. So let's get off this never ending platform and get on with life, try to fix the real problems we are facing together rather than devised. Remember the saying Together we stand, devised we fall.
Everybody who is born in Australia is indigenous🤣😂😁.
indigenous to what?
correct. if we want to talk about the people that were here before europeans - they are aboriginal. but even that may not be correct, as it is entirely possible that the very first peoples to this continent are long gone. and, if true, we mean that we are all the descendants of peoples that displaced other peoples on this continent. now that's a "dangerous idea"
Personally I accept people for who they are, Ben they black, purple, red or green. I only see human beings.
We don't call ourselves terrible people but it's forced on us by not only the Aborigines but all coloured people and in particular these days by the Muslim population. None of these people accept or wish to live alongside us in harmony when they are encourage to keep playing the victim.
Sorry mate but if these people get up and do something to change their situation people will do their best to help, but you have just made the same excuse of living in a neighbourhood of thugs, guns and violence. Your parents should be education their kids rather then let them run riot, undisciplined. There are many whites people who find themselves without a grand income just like the coloured people and manage to raise their kids to become decent adults. It has absolutely nothing to do with the colour of your skin or shape of your eyes. It has to de with the persons own attitude in life .
Love Coleman… the left has won the narrative in Australia, hopefully some Aussies will be schooled today
