  • Well, what happens now? Does Donald Trump win? Does he lose? To whom? What are we all in for?
On the eve of Trump’s coronation as the Republican presidential candidate at the party’s National Convention this week, he was narrowly shot in an apparent assassination attempt at a rally.
Is this the most dramatic election of our lives? David Frum is one of the most influential anti-Trumpers to come out of a Republican White House. As President George W Bush’s speechwriter, he's credited with the famous phrase the "axis of evil". He wrote the first insider account of the Bush presidency. Frum is now a senior editor at The Atlantic.
David and Josh sat down shortly before the Trump shooting for the occasion of the Republican National Convention. They discuss Trump’s plans, Biden’s options, the fate of both parties… and of America.
In the first half-hour of this episode, Josh reflects on how to process this moment, and how the assassination attempt and response have already begun to shape what the future will hold for this campaign as well as American democracy at large.

    Hey Josh,
long time listener, not always a viewer.
In the podcast description, you included the word 'apparent' before assassination attempt. Just curious... why? I can understand why the reporting in the hours after the event used that word. I can understand that there is little information as to motive. I can even understand using the word apparent after trump said the bullet pierced his ear (why trust the most the prolific public liar in history?).
But haven't we got more than enough information now to just say assassination attempt?
You're not the only journalist I've seen do this, and it's compelled me to ask you.
    Thanks and Cheers

I don't think 'apparent' is the same as 'alleged' - it's not denying it happened, watering it down or anything like that. Likely some media just waiting for fbi to release a confirmed assassination motive by the guy even though it's obvious it was an assassination attempt.

I admire David Frum, but he's wrong about Henry Wallace. He was not a "nutjob." He was an idealist, sure, but he was Sec of Ag during the Depression and his corn innovations greatly produced crop yields. He was a legit titan in the industry. Yes, he had communist leanings, but that word was didn't have the demonization that it has today. He was dropped because party bosses, like the racist, old school Democrat Jimmy Burns, suspected FDR wouldn't make it to the end of his term and they wanted someone they could control: enter Truman. They could've never pushed around Wallace that way. Imagine Wallace as someone similar to Bernie Sanders today. Would the Marshall Plan have happened under Wallace? There's good reason to believe it would since Wallace greatly admired Marshall, who was one of the greatest Americans of the 20th century. No doubt he'd have had the ear of Wallace. Who knows what a Wallace presidency might've looked like. President Wallace may not have dropped the bombs. Yes, he was in favor of cohabitating WITH the USSR not AGAINST. That means very likely no "containment," no Cold War, and no Vietnam.

Excellent point at 21 minutes. The right to bear arms is a key tenant of USA law and culture. Unfortunately.

The years of anti-Trump hate speed of your guest, and his "Never Trump" fellow travelers, along with their allies in the Democrat Party, set the stage for the assination of President Trump.

But for the so hard to achieve a non-biased Justice department
    You had to prosecute Trump
    For no other reason
    That they prosecuted Jon Edwards

The first part was history candy for history nerds. The world isn’t black or white or simple or complex. Contingency, agency, and craziness gets a vote.

The OG TDS in the house! I remember when he first gave it to Sam Harris. As a Canadian I apologize for this man who called Trump a would be dictator in his article following the assassination attempt. He was first with the far left in Canada, then worked with Bush in the US and then voted for Hillary, I don't think he has ever been on the right team in politics.

I enjoyed listening to your prologue. It was all downhill from there, mainly due to the real estate agent with the TDS. Talk about a pot and a kettle.
