Fast Log Entry for POTA Logging

Quick overview video about how I use Fast Log Entry (FLE) for Parks on the Air (POTA) activation logging. This is the program that I use for data entering my paper logs, and more recently I've been using it in real-time while activating. It feels like a digital version of a paper log, which is exactly why I like it. I know this is a very different type of video for me, but I thought someone mig...

Wow. You make CW look really cool on a 705 👍🏼
I learned sending on a Yaesu and find it translates well to other radios (except the Mountain Topper). I wonder if it's forced me into more precise timing. I also forced myself to squeeze key from Day 1, so maybe that's worked in my favor? Now if Yaesu would just get on board with PIN diode switching... You can always tell when the guy on the other end is frustrated. It's a good reminder that it happens to the best of us.
It sure does! sometimes the moose just isn’t coding 😂 I did figure out later though today the radio was set to Iambic mode A, which I don’t like at all haha. I prefer Iambic B. In B, if you hit a dit or dah early while the last dit or dah is still beeping, it saves it and sends it after. So you can key one dit or dah in advance. In Iambic A, you can’t do that at all. If you hit a dit or dah while it’s beeping the last one, nothing happens. At least that’s my probably very rudimentary was of thinking about those modes haha. Funny you mention pin diode switching, I love my 891 but dang that relay is loud. The 705 is a relay too, but it’s super quiet so doesn’t bother me. Anywho, I’ll stop rambling. 73 Todd!
TNX !!! Listening for my Thursday morning head copy on drive to work.
Thanks for listening!! & 73!
That’s a nice compact setup and a nice looking park. I really don’t need anymore radios but I should look into the 705. I mostly use my KX3 and it does great. I notice that you are keying dots on the right side of the paddle and dashes on the left side - that’s different for a right-handed keyer. 73 and see you out there…
The KX3 is a great rig too! I love my 705 though. Every now and then you just find a radio that you “connect” with. You’re right, I key in reverse. I gotta be weird somehow! 😂 I didn’t have anyone help me learn CW and it’s the way that felt natural. Now a few years later I know better but just stick with it hah. 73 my friend! See you on the air
@@w4arb Whatever works! 👍
Hi Aaron. Another fun video. Tnx. It looks like you went back to the stock Alex Loop Backpack. Me too :) I tried the same 5:11 Tactical Pack that you tried in one of your videos. At first I thought it would work but I have found the one that comes with the Alex Loop (even though it's not very robust and I am not a fan of the orange trim) is still a better fit for the system. If I ever find a replacement backpack that works better I'll let you know. 73
You’re right, I did. I still have the 511 one and it’s a good pack, but it takes longer to load/unload than the one that comes with it. I’m gonna keep using the one that came with it until the zippers give out hah. If I find another interesting one I’ll let you know too. 73
@ I think the right replacement pack would be one with an open center like the one that comes with it and a back laptop pocket to put the loop in. If I can find a pack like that I’ll take it to a sail maker or canvas shop and have them stitch two Velcro straps in the center just like the original. The problem so far as been trying to match the unique shape of the original. If I find anything that works I’ll be sure to let you know. 73, W7CPP
I wish there was a USFS campground near you when we come up with our RV in April on way to Chicago, once in a while we like to avoid Atlanta traffic, so going up 231 to I-65 is often a nice drive with the RV. Will love to see your logging demo. I spent the winter wiring up a solar PV system in our RV that will have around 1,800 watts of PV between the roof & gnd mounts. Yesterday I got my 7/8~ ant for 2M on the truck so I can find those kids on SOTA this summer as they jog up those 14K peaks. Keep up the good! Davey - KU9L 12:35
It’s not a national forest, but there’s a nice campground in Auburn right off of i85. Bonus it’s POTA park US-1038! www.alapark.com/parks/chewacla-state-park/rv-camping Come on! It’d be great to meet up!
Well at least I can get to see what I'm missing most times! haha. I just listened for you on 30m and did not hear a peep out of you. so propagation here was nil but I'll keep hunting! and looking for you Aaron tnx fer sharing and activating! de Ellis WA1RKS
This morning propagation wasn’t the best on 30m this morning but I was trying to run away from the CWT contesters 😂 I’m trying to convince myself to run non-QRP more often. Thanks for watching & catch you down the log! 73
It's always a pleasure to listen to your POTA activations. Indeed, your content on RUclips is an excellent way to learn Morse code (CW). I've learned a lot from you, including going off-frequency when chasing Parks on the Air (POTA) activations. It's also impressive to see how minimal a setup can be to achieve long-distance communication. I've been following your channel for about two years, perhaps longer. My Morse code proficiency has improved significantly; I can now copy at 20 to 21 words per minute with ease. (For POTA) Rag chew 18 WPM.. Thank you for all the hard work you put into your videos. I know it's not easy, juggling work, family, and everything else. I'm glad you manage to find a few hours each week to assist those of us learning or, in my case, relearning CW. Looking forward to catching you on the bands! DE NN2X / Tom from Texas!
Thank you for the kind words Tom! I appreciate you always following along and the chats we’ve had over comments and email. It’s a great hobby! 73
Thanks for the video Aaron. Warmer weather! More CW! The video quality and color in this video is fantastic. What did you use?
Thank you! It’s a GoPro Hero 10. I’ve been experimenting with the settings and think I like this one. Shot at 24 FPS & 4K. Rendered down to 1080 after editing. 73!
Aaron, hamAlert let know you were on but couldn't catch you here in ID. Maybe next time when you get a vertical up. Thanks again for your videos. BTW, I like your hat! 73 Bob WB6TIS
Thanks Bob! I will have a vertical up here in about 15 minutes hihi. Catch you down the log, 73!
Ya se lo que tengo que hacer con mi gorra 😅 y extensible al techo de mi furgo para que descodifiquen desde los aviones 😊 73 desde SPAIN EA1IRO 73
That’s right! :) 73!
I use FLE for all my VKFF logs to send in, easy for this not so techno weeny to get my logs right for the parks coordinator.
It's a great tool for that!
Have you tried to use it on a balcony?
I have, it works good as a balcony antenna. The rule of thumb is it should ideally have about 3’ of clearance on all sides, and it’s good to go. But it’s not the end of the world if you can’t get that. I’ve also seen folks clamp it horizontally to a balcony rail, I suppose that would work well too. 73!
I've used this in the past and it is fast (once you get the hang of it). But my question is am I the only nerd who still logs signal reports? I log on paper in the field and it really slows down entering my log into any software. I've probably gone back and looked at signal reports a grand total of a handful of times, but I feel like once it's lost, it's lost forever if I don't log it.
There’s nothing wrong with that! I stopped logging RST a while back but it’s a nice (subjective) data point, especially if you note your antenna/power. It’s always funny when filling out a QSL card 2 months later and having no idea what the correct RST is 😂
Cool program. One of my 2025 ham radio goals is paper logging all analog 73
It’s cool. Has none of the fancy complications of normal logging apps. FLE is like the digital version of paper logging haha. But even when I paper log, I use FLE for generating the file. Paper is still my favorite 🤓 73!
Nice video.
Thank you! 73
Thanks for the video and slowing down for that second contact. 73 wd4dda

Good morning, sir.I'm a new old hymn returning to him after about 50 years. And I'm looking to get a good portable rig.For doing c w it kind of like what you're doing. I like that red unit you're using. Is what making model is that regular using? Love listening to you and I'm learning a lot of c.W just by Thank you very much.
Great to hear about getting back into the hobby! The radio Im using in this video is the Mountain Topper MTR4B by LNR Precision. It’s a great little CW only portable radio. Thanks for watching and 73!
Have you tried this antenna on a balcony by any chance? I’m looking to get AL-705 for my IC-705 to be used at my condo
I haven’t technically used the Alex Loop on a balcony, but I’ve used it indoors, on decks, all other kinds of locations and it works pretty well in all of them. I wouldn’t hesitate to use one on a balcony! 73
You rocking the DF3CB logger. I have not been able to switch to electronic logging , it is a disaster if I don't use pen and paper. 73 Dugbo
I completely understand! Nothing wrong with that, I love paper logging too. FLE is the only electronic logger I like since it feels kinda similar to paper logging 😂 73!
LITW exchange protocol? More info please. I googled and didn't find. Maybe I'm missing a letter :)
It’s roughly the Long Island CW Club (LICW) protocol- here’s a link to a PDF of it: longislandcwclub.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/LICW-QSO-Protocol.pdf Good starting point for a rag chew, and of course can be adapted as desired :)
@@w4arb Aaron, yes I know LCWO and spent 30 min there in the morning and 30 min there in the evening trying to up my ICR....and work on words; so far 3 letter words. I've been a licensed Ham for a long time, but languished in VHF/UHF until I heard Charlie in AZ? (might be NM) communicating with a guy in Canada. Yep, cw, and Charlie was using a little itty bitty radio. That fascinated me, enough to begin studying for General and a deep deep dive into Morse. My goal is to become fluent in it....but at 70 I might be dead before fluency haha!
That’s awesome to hear! I fully believe you can become fluent in it. It takes practice, but you’ll be surprised once you learn a little and get on the air, it’ll get easier quickly. There’s something about using it real-world that makes learning speed up. Jump on and make contacts as soon as you can copy your own call! Hah. I’ve never met a CW op that minds mistakes or slow speed. We are just happy to have contacts. Hope to hear you on the air!
@@w4arb Too kind. Well my first step will be VBand when the USB interface gets here....then hopefully in February I'll pass the General. BUT I just noticed that 6 meters is open to CW and Technician license. So I have been studying 6 meter antennas. Funny, there is a Yeasu 710 Field sitting here, a Xiegy x5105, and an FX-4CR en route and I've never transmitted on HF. I must have high hopes to pass the exam haha!
Very cool! You also have CW privileges on 10M, 15M, and 40M as a technician. 40M is especially a busy band in the mornings and evenings.
Still like the ATU-10 after a year? Also, one thing I'd love in your vids is the scrolling ticker tape (maybe at the top) of the CW exchange. A lot of us are learning CW, learning the POTA/SOTA 'exchange'; being able to see what you are sending and receiving CW wise would be a big help. There is a guy names Charlie in AZ (maybe NM maybe) that does the ticker tape. Anyway, enjoying your vids very much and enjoy watching the deployment of the kit. W6RYM 73 to you.
I do! It’s a great QRP tuner, especially for the price. I believe you’re talking about Charlie with the Red Summit RF channel. I love when channels do that CW on-screen too. While I just can’t spend the time to do it for every video/QSO, I am planning to start showing my log/text of what I’m writing/typing down. Should have a good example video of that coming this weekend. 73 & thank you for the kind words!
@@w4arb That's him :) Aaron, thanks for the link to the protocol. That will help me follow you cw wizzes! Showing your log/text (or the scrolling ticker tape), well anything helps us learn.
What did you send when you couldn't hear that guy? NIL?
I’d have to go back and listen to be sure, but normally I send “NIL” for Not In Log or “NIL SRI” to add a sorry on the end. 73!

Always happy to slow down! & happy to slow down key speed too if asked QRS :) That’s great about hearing words, that’s when CW starts getting a lot easier. I plan to stay warm the next few days and get back out later in the week once it warms up a bit. 73!
Good to work you again Aaron. I'm originally from ND and used to handle any kind of cold without issue. After living in NC and TN for the past 30 years, I have not a drop of cold weather blood in me anymore. Your activation outside while the snow spits down just makes me shiver. I've retreated to the vehicle for activating in anything below 50 these days!

@w4arb looks good :)
Hi my friend, Im ur subscriber, greets from Russia! One question to u: Im 42, today directly 6 months of my cw learning from scratch. Every f***ng day! I made small vocabulary with 100 common cw qso phrases. And reached 30 wpm speed without writting down (head in copy). Without mistakes! Great! But now I tried to copy paste random text from wikipedia into my emulator program and I was shocked! Only 15 wpm I understand everything. Faster - I cant! 😭 6 months of every day hard trainings and such a chicken results! Do u think I make smth wrong? Or its normal result for 6 months? ... I want to speak morse open text, as I talk with my friends via telephone... I dont like limited base like CQ 73 GA FB RST GL. What do u think? Tnx in anvance.
That’s very impressive progress in 6 months! I have been operating CW nearly daily for almost 3 years and I can do 30 WPM for simple contest exchanges. Copying random text is much more difficult. I can only do about 18-20 WPM with random text. I find that as you practice, your vocabulary of words you instantly recognize expands. In my opinion, you’re learning very quickly. Quicker than I have. Thanks for watching and hope to catch you on the air one day! 73 my friend
@@w4arb thank u bro, u make me claim! First time I thought that I'm stupid. Now I believe in myself again and will continue practice! I hope in 6 months we will meet in qso (I want learn 1 year before first qso, so half year I already learned and half remained). Thank u and 73 de R2SEI, SK
@@Alexander-n2jI think that is great progress for 6 months. Even with daily practice it is a skill that is hard to learn. I have played around at learning CW like 5x in my life and never seems to stick to memory. I’ve been watching a lot of CW videos like this to just get used to the sounds picking out the Dits and Dahhs and breaks in words. Keep up the hard work. It’ll pay off.
@@fighting17chicago thanks a lot! I wonder when some internet guys said they learned morse for 2 weeks... Maybe they ment alphabet 🤣 so I will continue. I learned English at school and German & French in university. But morse is much more difficult... But maybe because I was young when studied languages, but now Im 42.... The retired old shit 😭😢🤣
@ we aren’t old!!! I’m 40 and feel like I’m 25! Yeah I can see people claiming to have learned Morse in 2 weeks, but they aren’t proficient. Most people that claim that have never keyed CW in a live situation.
Love seeing the log. Man, I was having trouble hearing that morning. It sounded much better on your end.
Thanks for the feedback & for the contact! 73
Thanks for the video. Goal is to learn cw this year, pretty much lost... any tips.
Congrats on starting your CW journey! It’s a lot of fun. I would say tips depends on how you like to learn. If you enjoy learning in a group/class, Long Island CW Club has some great classes. If you (like me) like learning by doing, I used the Morse Mania app to learn the sound of the letters and then started chasing Parks on the Air activators on the air to practice. Getting on the air as soon as you can is the best teacher! Don’t be afraid to mess up. We all have been there and we all mess up still. Most of all enjoy it! 73

Just a thought… would a very large golfing umbrella or a small deck umbrella and table clamp be of use? Not for a downpour but drier if a drizzle occurred? Thanks for the video. I am back into the hobby after 28 years and trying to bring the CW back up to speed. Confession: playback at .75 speed.
That would certainly work! I was caught by surprise this time. Great to hear you’re back, it’s amazing the resurgence CW has had the last few years. 73
Mornin Aaron - thanks for sharin

Thanks for another great video!
Thank you & 73!
Awesome video! Started studying CW this year and hope to be able to do my first CW POTA activation by around late summer. I like your setup for your log book. What notebook cover is that? I haven’t been able to find one like it online. 73 de KQ4LEE
That’s awesome! Congrats on starting your CW journey. It’s a lot of fun. I use Field Notes as my log book and a cheap pouch from Amazon that holds it, pens, CW key and such. Here’s the link to the pouch: amzn.to/49BpsnO
@ awesome! Thank you!
40m 60 QSO run... I was stuck in the 40m gulag while I was a tech, but I'm back on it now
Heck yeah! 40m is ole reliable. Always QSOs to be had on 40.
happy new year to you Aaron!
Same to you my friend!
Happy New Year! A lot warmer looking there than up here in New England. Way to start the year off right.
I’m sure it is! Our winters are typically pretty mild. Stay warm & 73!
That’s a good day out!
Agreed!
First contact with you on 40m with my new MC-750. It works well but that morning was rough.
Awesome! Condx weren’t too great, but still got through! 73
You Rock!. Nice to see you continue the "Early Bird" activations. 73 Jim
Thank you Jim! Morning is my favorite time to operate. 73 & catch you down the log!
Happy New Year Aaron! Been digging out of over a foot of snow up here in WV. Hope to work you someday on CW- 73 de N2VQD
