Heather Is Making Stuff
Канада
Knitting machine videos, and more! I love to make things, and share the process. I have a Superba (White 1602) knitting machine with SuperbaKnit, a Singer SK155/SR155 bulky 9mm machine, and now a Brother 940/KR850 standard gauge, and Brother 260/KR260 bulky gauge.
I also like to sew, hand knit, crochet, make things from polymer clay, draw (not overly well, but hey), bake, cook, and restore some vintage things, including a White 8930 zig zag sewing machine, converted to treadle operation, in the cabinet from a Singer 15-88. My videos here may encompass any of those things, but since there are not as many videos available for using the beautiful Superba knitting machines, I'll start there and see where we end up :)

Knitting Tuck Stitch on the Superba Knitting Machine with Superbaknit
A brief demonstration of how to knit a single-bed tuck stitch pattern on your Superba knitting machine outfitted with Superbaknit. The technique would be almost identical if your Superba-made machine has a different patterning input, such as the pressure pad or light scanning box. However, the method for setting up the electronic pattern would be different.

thank you Heather its help me a lot I have a vintage sewing machine that I love but never try to do and with your video I learn and will do a button holes I love sewing ❤
Gracias
Hi Heather - which buttonholer do you prefer or the two? Thank you!
Hello, thank you very much for your videos. I really want to have information like yours for singer superba. Please help me find. The link does not work, error 404. Thank you very much.❤
So is this a computerized machine
Beautiful machine! I have the 158.1410 (1970-71) in a cabinet - wouldn't trade it for the world. Your is (was) definitely the Cadillac of Kenmores! I've never run across an 1802 in all these years, but would covet it if I did! Thanks for the tutorial! Mine operates the same way with a green, smaller buttonhole accessory (fewer buttonhole designs) but I can also use the Kenmore standalone buttonholer - #6739 - comes with 10 buttonhole cams - so fun! Thanks again!
Could I do this on a Silver Reed SK280 set to fairisle?
Been watching some of your videos, all very well explained and motivating 💪🏻 I have a question for you: let’s say you’ll have to decrease while doing this pattern. Would you change the cursors positions (or something else) or just keeping on working as usual and let the first/last stitches be patterned? Thanks!
Hello, I am Mrs FAGUE, I live in FRANCE, please I would like you to send me a copy of the color changer instructions, I bought the device but no instructions, thank you very much, I really like your vidéos
my Superba S47 has the pressure pad, but sadly it doesn't even turn on. Can I still do double jacquard? I do have the "frog eyes" type of carriage, but I don't have a color changer. Can I do the color jacquard manually?
Olá, mais da singer please, obrigada
I know this is an old video, but I have a Passap forma and found some copied and laminated stitch rulers (I did this years ago) in the bag with it. I was able to confirm they were indeed for the forma due to your video. Thank you!
That is awesome!
if you are doing heat sensitive parts, using UV LEDs in a box works pretty well but is usually slower, depending on how bright the sun in where you are. putting the parts in a sealed box can also help reduce streaking because they wont dry so quickly and don't usually need to be wrapped. hope that helps someone.
i've had good luck by using double sided tape when i do button holes. i put it outside the button hole area so the fabric stays with the plate and can't shift. works out pretty well as long as there aren't multiple layers sliding over each other. tailor's tacks usually work to resolving that though.
Hi Heather, I know this video was made a while back . My question is, do you have to have the computer program to do lace on this machine.
Hi Sandra, no you don't. You just need some method of electronic patterning input, unless you want to hand select needles.
@@heatherismakingstuff Thank you for replying back to me
I just received mine. It looked unused and came with everything, including spare needles. I can’t make it work. The yarn gets tangled around the looper. Tension nob is very tight. On the the loosest position, it is still an effort to pull the yarn. Not sure what is wrong. Should I try lace weight yarn? I was testing with fingering. I would appreciate any advice. Thank you
Definitely try a thinner yarn and see how that helps. Fingering weight seems to be the absolute max I can push it without issues. Then make triple sure you have it threaded correctly and have the needle facing the right way. I also find to pull yarn through a challenge, I need to lift up the tension disks if I need to pull a length through, so that sounds normal at least. Also when you first start, make sure to hold the thread tail taut. After a stitch or two you will see it moving along and you'll know it's not tangled. It can get bunched up right at the start sometimes. Hopefully something there gets you started, it's so handy when it's working well.
@@heatherismakingstuff Thank you, Heather, for a quick reply. I definitely will try. Thank you
Nothing worked. I even lubricated it. It doesn’t form stitches just loops around. I really wanted to like this tiny linker vs round ones.
@@tatyana.mikina just to clarify it does just make a chain stitch, and it will only work with fabric - without fabric it will pull right out. So the looping may be normal. If you shoot me an email with some photos maybe I can help diagnose where it's going awry
@@heatherismakingstuff Hi Heather, I finally got it. After I switched to lace yarn, I didn’t use my swatch. It finally works now with the fabric on. I am so happy. Thank you so much. Your video is what inspired my search for this linker in the first place.
Boa noite!
Interesting! They were produced in France and haven't been made since the 1980s but you don't see many of them in Canada either (at least in the part where I am.)
it’s a beautiful pattern! I made it on singer memo 2
Thanks, so much, this is great! I had no idea all these patterns came with SuperbaKnit or what the explorer was for. This will be the next thing I'm going to try after I am a pro at knitting double jacquard. 😀
Thank you Heather, look forward to seeing your next video!! 😊 😊
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your experience. Just a question: how did you clean the items after the process?
Mostly it just wipes off, and the remainder I cleaned off with rubbing alcohol (I use this for cleaning the machines most of the time.)
witch model is this that you are using?
It is a White 1602, similar to Superba s48 or Singer 2310. It originally had the light scanning box but that was broken, and now I have installed Superbaknit.
I’m wondering if someone can help me. I have the white knitting machine with all the accessories. It’s in excellent condition and I’m looking to sell it. I’m in Wisconsin. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you for this video
Thank you for watching!
Hi!!! Love your content. Where can I find manuals for these kind of machines? I'm new and I think I'm gonna lose my mind! thanks a lottt
Thank you! There are manuals for the machines and most accessories available here: m.box.com/shared_item/https%3A%2F%2Fapp.box.com%2Fs%2Fdan9sb50rfei0o0umpok There are also some good blogs out there like Patrick Madden's at superbaknitting.com which are helpful. The Facebook and ravelry Superba groups are excellent as well
thank you so much!! this is super useful ❤
Is this 🤔 an expensive piece of equipment?
I don't think so nowadays, unfortunately most of them are missing the combs and they can't be used without them 😞. I am not sure if they were pricey when they were new either, but it's all solid metal and seems well-constructed.
Thank you for showing this. How do you connect the machine to the computer ? I have an old machine with memo 2
For that you need to replace the old electronics with the Superbaknit hardware and software package. You can learn more about it at www.superbaknit.nl There are different versions available for the different kind of machines. It was a bit of a cost investment but I am very happy to keep my machine patterning.
just noticed you 'struggled' to thread the carriage when changing yarn with the claw - to help with that, you can use the latch tool or the transfer tool, this helps catch the yarn the guide it into the slot where our fingers can not quite reach. actually anything long & thin will work. even a spare knitting needle or crochet hook or a skewer
Is there a way to get a copy of the manual? I have the machine and accessories but no Manuel.
Hi Sophia, if you email me (heather.is.making.stuff at gmail.com) I can send it to you. Alternatively it's available in the vintage Kenmore group on Facebook. The copy I have is for the 158.18024 so it's a little different to the version of the machine I have, but there are only minor differences.
Oh no don't do this without taking off the plastic parts, you must separate the pieces to do a good job in the first place, and also you don't want the metal parts to get rusty by making them wet and not being able to dry them properly. Especially the unaccessible spots where the screws hold everything in place. Plus hydrogen peroxyde, which contains oxygen, increases the oxydation process (as the word says). Let the experts do this, keep your cookie coloured machine healthy instead
Olá, não há mais vídeos? Tudo bem? Obrigada
Hi, thanks for the video. I would like to ask you the following question: With all the Singer/Superba I have bought, I need to use both hands to move the carriage, even just one of them (the main one), but I see that you slide it without any difficulty, could you tell me why? As a note, I have cleaned both the bed and the carriages thoroughly, improving the sliding, but still, it is still very hard. Any help please? Regards!
Hi Victor. That seems to be a common issue with some people's machines. I would suggest to make sure the plastic tubing that covers the pieces on the carriages which slides in the rails is in good condition. It might be split or otherwise damaged. If it's OK, have you tried to add any lubricant to that rail where the carriage slides? I have been using Ballistol oil, but you can also use sewing machine oil if that's easier to come by where you live. I would also oil the flippers and moving parts on the bottom of the carriages (sparingly!), and the rail in which the cursor slides. Oh and the carriages are also going to be harder to push when the cursor is attached; make sure to move it out of the way when you aren't pattern knitting. The oiling does make things a bit messy so use as little as possible, but it should make a difference. You can also take a bit of oil on a soft lint-free cloth and oil the butt ends of the needles, and put a little bit across the bed behind the needles while they are in working position so it goes into the channels, and then run the carriage over a few times, then wipe any excess. Again don't use too much and make sure you have cloths handy to wipe off the inevitable "black crud" that will come off the machine if you accidentally touch the parts you oiled. Also, if you haven't opened up the machine bed itself and cleaned out the brake spring, you might be horrified by what can build up inside of it. I have one machine that I bought for parts, on which the needles could barely move in and out. I opened it up to harvest the brake spring when my main machine's was broken, and the needles were basically stuck to the bed with crud, and the spring was so full of fluff I don't know how the needles even moved. All of this resistance would make it a lot harder to move the carriages. I hope that helps a little bit. One of the things I like the most about the Superba is how easy and light the carriage is to push compared to some other machines. It's much nicer on the shoulder when you get it moving freely. Good luck!
@@heatherismakingstuff Hi Heather. Thank you very much for replying... I will follow your advice. Best regards!
Very nice
What’s the chances you would be interested in giving a full demonstration on this machine? My mother just gave me hers exact same model and I used it when I was in my teens, but now I’m 50 and it’s been a long time. I need a brush up with everything!
I can probably do that! It's very easy to use as long as you've got the manual handy. Has a couple of quirky little things I often need to double check
@@heatherismakingstuff Im in the same boat and would love a demonstration. I already broke a needle trying to figure my machine out, sigh.. :/
What's the largest size yarn you can use in a Bellinky? I'm having a hard time finding instruction booklets online
Anything up to about UK 4ply (around sock weight) seems to be ok, but fine or super fine work best in my experience. The trade off there is strength. I had a very thin wool yarn that worked great, but it was really easy to break with just pulling it. A thin acrylic though is still pretty strong. I have used something closer to a sport weight (a light DK if you're not familiar with North American terms) once, but it was hard to turn and had a tendency to split the yarn. That could be user error, but because there's no way to adjust the stitch size, you are limited to what works nicely with that size. Basically anything you could knit easily on a standard gauge knitting machine seems to be best.
Hi Heather, I eventually made some stitches with the transfer carriage. Thank you very much for your help. The manual is very easy to read and it explain clearly all the passages . P. S. : I’m Sasha Vella in the group
Hey, would you have any tips for the full wrap cast on? I keep having problems with it, as my yarn unravels and pulls apart when I attempt to cast on. I have the flow combs alternate and everything else seems to be in order, but I'm totally clueless as to why this keeps happening!
Hi Jess, sorry I didn't see your comment until now. Do you mean an e-wrap? or a double e-wrap perhaps? There is a way to do it, although it's not one I use regularly on this machine. The Answer Lady has a great video on it here: ruclips.net/video/vDKeVzo5Dz0/видео.html
Hi, I joined the Facebook group and downloaded this book but I think I missed the first 20 pages, that are so important to understand the symbols. I’ m getting crazy with this machine! Where I can find these pages, I mean the yellow ones I see at the beginning of the video?
There is a copy here: issuu.com/superba/docs/gltc_manual_compressed I don't think it can be downloaded but I refer to it often!
Nice video. I have the Kenmore 1813, which came with most of the Buttonholer stuff - but not the metal plate. While watching your video & thus learning of the need for the metal plate part (which I did not know existed), I found & purchased on eBay another Buttonholer set complete with the plate, which will arrive in a couple of weeks. Which shape on the Template did you use to make the Eyelet ? The set I have & the new set don't show a round one, but do have an ovaly oval & a straighter oval. I'm making clothing for re-enactments which need Eyelets for closures & I've found hand-stitching them difficult, hoping to use the machine & then do some over-stitching by hand.
This one is the more oval and less oblong of the eyelet shapes. I never realized it before but it's not round either. At 11:00 in the video you can see all the different designs. This one would have been the most round of them, lol. I didn't actually realize the template wasn't round until you pointed it out!
Thank you. I also have a Bellinky linker, and only one Needle. Do you know where to buy Needles?
Well I actually have a couple of blog posts about this very issue at heatherismakingstuff.com . Apparently the needles are becoming rare and hard to find, but I have a MacGyvered solution 😂
Hi, can you do this type of work with an old singer memo 2?
Yes you can! The transfer carriage will fit on all the similar double bed models. The only difference will be how the electronic input is programmed.
@@heatherismakingstuff thanks! I bought a second hand singer and don’ t understand the instructions.
@@silviatornabene2357 that's very common, the instructions are cryptic, lol. There is a very helpful Facebook group for Superba machines, as well as a ravelry group, and on RUclips, The Answer Lady has some very helpful videos on basic things like cast-ons that are transferable to any of these machines.
@@heatherismakingstuff cool, infortunately mine isn’t superba
@@silviatornabene2357 oh sorry - if it is this style of Singer double bed machine, they are all made by the Superba company in France. They branded them under different names for sale in different countries: Singer, White, Phildar, Superba, but they all work the same way. If you have the memo ii with the pressure pad input you have the right kind for these videos.
hi will it work on a silver reed ec-1?
Unfortunately I don't know. It will depend on the kind of plastic, but I don't know the plastic they used for the ec1
@@heatherismakingstuff ok thanks. I don't know what kind of plastic either.
Thank you Heather for the demo. The fabric produced seems to be thick. Is it?
Hi Naomi, sorry I didn't see your comment! It can be quite thick depending on the yarns used. These yarns are on the higher end of what would be appropriate for this technique, anything thicker and you might end up with a really thick/stiff fabric.
When changing the yarn manually you don't have to completely thread it in the guide. Taken from the manual: "Unhook the main yarn, pull it towards the front and hold it in front of the opening of the carriage, above the yarn guide (the yarn passes in front of the right hand brush). When moving the carriages towards the right hand side, stretch the yarn backwards and towards the left hand side. It will thread itself automatically" It makes thread changing easier (only when done on the left hand side of the machine)
