Analog vs DAW Mixing - Which One Is Better? (A/B Test Inside!)
Is mixing on an analog console better than mixing in a DAW? This is what an analog mix sounds like compared to in the box!
For my entire creative life, people have been talking about the difference between analog and digital recording and mixing. Why one is better, the pitfalls of the other and a seemingly endless road of “if you don’t do it this way your music will fail.” But does it really matter? Is there really a difference in the sound? So in this video we’re at the incredible Blackbird Studios in Nashville, TN to find out!

Thanks for the forecast! Just a quick off-topic question: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (mistake turkey blossom warfare blade until bachelor fall squeeze today flee guitar). How should I go about transferring them to Binance?
I would guess A was the DAW and B was the console. I just love the sound of API - and to me, the sound of those transformers and 2520s is distinctive. I agree with your assessment between the two . The digital one actually sounds "bigger", but the console mix (or what I believe to be the console mix) sounds more like a record. The circuitry in the API seems to ever so slightly band limit and saturate the peaks off of the waveform, leading to a more cohesive sound that is more felt than heard. The most obvious thing, other than that, was the difference in width. The analog mix seemed to be considerably wider, especially with the guitars. I find that very interesting and cant really account for why that would be the case, other than any possible differences between the channels. I do think there is probably material that would benefit more from the DAW sound, where high headroom is the most important thing, and any "glue" isnt needed. I think if one really HAS to have that console sound, then a summing mixer might be a good option - but be sure to get one with transformers on every channel, not just a box with transformers on the outputs. The CAPI one comes to mind as being great. Thanks again!
What an absolutely unbelievable video - incredibly useful. Lots of work this must have taken. THANK YOU
ive never really heard them back to back before. very interesting. thank you for doing this!
Can you please tell me how can I remove 4 stems? acapella drums bass vocal
Hi there! Thank you so much for watching! You may be able to do it with MDX-net instrumental model (see my video here), but the surefire way is to go under the "choose mdx-net model" drop down and then select "download more models." Under mdx-net, look for these: MDX-Net Model: kuielab a vocals MDX-Net Model: kuielab a other MDX-Net Model: kuielab a bass MDX-Net Model: kuielab a drums MDX-Net Model: kuielab_ b vocals MDX-Net Model: kuielab b other MDX-Net Model: kuielab b bass MDX-Net Model: kuielab b drums You can run those individual models on a track to get the stems you're looking for. If you get stuck, send me the song to mgmt@braddollar.com and I'll help you out!
@@BradDollar Thank you very much for answering me and I did as you said and it worked successfully.
Great vid! Do you know if there is a way to get separate stems of guitars and keyboards?

@@BradDollar Hi. Thansk a lot for the deteailed answer. I'm gonna try the models you suggested. Thanks a lot and have a nice day!
Im running my reg stomp boxes direct to board at Jason Aldeans in Vegas...is there a generic setting that you'd use? I run a pretty standard rig: tuner, wah, clean noisy, comp, wampler dual fusion for lead & dd....thanks man
That’s awesome! I hope you have a great show. Honestly, I would keep it real simple. Make sure the input gain (little knob on the front) is where you like it (not overly distorting) and make sure the output gain is loud/healthy (usually around noon, top output knob). After that, the only other thing I’d probably tweak once on stage is the notch filter to make sure it doesn’t feedback or make your guitar sound woofy. Find where it sounds like it’s about to feedback and then turn it down. Everything else I’d probably leave alone until I heard it in person. You might want a little extra brightness and little less lows on the EQ, but that would be my last move. Overall goal in my mind - don’t overly tweak until you know what it’s going to sound like in person. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have more questions. Thanks for watching!
Thank You, this is so useful.
Glad it was helpful! Really happy to have you here!
I don't know whether it's different on Windows, but I had to select 'VR architecture' and the model, 'de echo, de reverb' to get it to work. 'MDX Net' + 'Reverb HQ' didn't do anything. Result very good though
Hey thank you so much for watching! I’m glad you were able to get it to work. For the MDX-net model to deverb, be sure to also select “deverb vocals” under vocal splitter options (in the wrench settings menu) otherwise it may not work. I tried it your way too and that worked as well. I wonder though if MDX net doesn’t work on Pc for some reason. Glad you’re here all the same!
Thank You! I never would have found that.
this is my favorite video you've ever done!
Thank you for being here to see a bunch of them!
Sick
Thank you for watching! Just posted a new video.
Can you open it in FL Studio and use it as a vst?
What up! I wish it ran real time, but it's standalone and definitely takes a moment to process. I don't even have that crazy fast of a computer and it still is finished pretty quickly. And then once you're done, you're done an you have the file to use freely.
@@BradDollar aw shucks too bad, very informative video btw !
loved this video series. i see some others wondering where the demo is but he made a part 2, its linked all over. there are none of these in my area so it was helpful to hear it finally. been playing for 12 years. ended up getting one of these last week because video. thank you brad!
I appreciate you being here and watching! Thank you for your help clarifying this to everyone too.
omg never knew this place was such a big deal! 😲 crazy how much it changed how music gets made. Journey escape literally saved my life when I first heard it, it just HIT different! thx for this!
Love this place! Wish I could teleport back one more time. Appreciate you watching!
didnt even think of it like that lol. the dead really knew how to make it work in the studio tho. good stuff!
They definitely did! Thanks for watching!
luv this!! 🎶 makin music everyday just makes life better. thx for the inspo!
I’m with you there! It's definitely worth making time for.
totally agree w/ this! u can't do it alone, gotta have ppl around u to make it happen. thx for sharing!! 🙌
Right?! You've got to have a team!
aint that the truth. thank u!
Appreciate you watching!
In doing that you get better become more productive more confident and you dont expect anything apart from being you. Oh yes you become less egotistical about your music. Some do one song and baby it for years never to be released to scared to show it because you realise your best effort wasnt good enough. If you make loads of songs guaranteed you will get better and even your bad songs will sound good to someone. Consistency is key.
fully agree!
You're so right! I appreciate you sharing your insight and being here as well.

That’s a great one! It’s a timeless classic.
This was such an useful demonstration of the software! How do you use it for the guitar dereverb example?
Hey thank you so much! I use the exact same settings for all of these, the same ones I mention at the top of the video. Let me know if those work for you and if not I'm happy to dig in and find some alternatives.
@@BradDollar Thank you for the video, I tried exact settings on Acoustic guitar .wav file, but reverb is not removed on no reverb stem, your example has day and night difference, if you do have alternatives, please let me know. Thanks

That's great! I'm glad it came together for you. Appreciate you being here and watching!
Thank you, Brad, for the hint about this software. The tutorial is incomplete, but @nanopi completed it for us. Thank you @nanopi. Even thou in my case it didn't work. I recommed Wave Pad Sound Editor.
What's incomplete about this? You just need to make sure you download the appropriate models.
I wish there was an auto-tune remover.
It's possible you could play with a vocal in melodyne to modify some of the pitch changes, although I don't think you could get rid of the artifacts of hard tuning. Might be worth a shot though!
Try playing enter sandman solo with that pedal
I need to for sure! Thank you for watching.
like a hurricane - neil young
That's a good one! Thanks for watching!
thanks for the wonderful tutorial. Well articulated and less intimidating than others i've watched. You get brain overload watching this stuff sometimes until you actually dive in and realize its way easier than it initially appears.
You're so welcome! I'm glad it was helpful! The hyper technical deep dives are important, but at the end of the day I think we should try to make the pathway to making music as simple as possible.
This was also the first pedal I owned. My Dad bought it for me from one of his work friends and had no idea what it was. He said he just liked the green. ha! I always used mode II because I thought it sounded more like a flanger pedal, which I didn't have at the time. Cool video. Nicely done!
What a great first pedal! Your dad definitely chose wisely. Do you remember what some of your favorite riffs to play through it were? I remember obsessing over playing that riff from "New" by No Doubt through it. Appreciate you being here and watching!
@@BradDollar And thank you! I'm a little older, so I was trying to match the sound on Van Halen's "Aint' Talking 'Bout Love" when he plays the C, B, C, in the beginning riff, which I think was a flanger, but it got me close with lots of resonance! :)
He created the sound I’ve been chasing since I got a Tascam US-122 in 2002. I’ll get there one day, Jerry. RIP 🫡
Much respect to that Tascam! Loved that thing. Spent a lot of time recording on it too. (here's an embarrassingly nostalgic favorite😅: societysedge.bandcamp.com/track/zombie-werewolf-at-night) Great to have you here and happy chasing! Glad we have Jerry to boost us.
I have 2 PARA DIs. Love 'em!!
That's rad! They're so good as a stereo pair. Thank you for being here and watching!
@joelglaser5657 i love that idea i want to do that.
when i was younger i didn't care at all about producers. i thought they were just people who did the marketing and paid the bills. as i got older i started paying attention to jerry finn because blink brought his name up a bunch of times in interviews, saying he was pretty much the fourth member of the band. his contribution to the band became evident when i heard some of blink's music after his passing, and it just lacked that distinctive blink sound and energy. the music just felt so much more generic, even though it was written by the same people. even after blink reunited, there was still a different vibe to the album. you never really realize how important he is until he's not there. he definitely had a talent for bringing this cohesive, unified, iconic sound to each pop-punk band, and in shaping the sound of pop-punk as a whole. as some constructive criticism for the maker of this video, it'd be nice to have clips or examples of the sounds and techniques you mention right after you talk about it. it makes the video/documentary much more informative and engaging, especially to non-producers such as myself
Thank you so much for such a heartfelt comment and for watching! There is a realm of producers that really do impact the sound, really do help engineer the recordings and pull things out of artists they didn’t know existed. Jerry was definitely one (Al Schmitt and Steve Albini are other amazing examples if you want somewhere to look). I would love to include more clips of the actual songs but I just don’t want any copyright strikes (RUclips is militant about it 😅). If there’s even a whisper of audio they’ll pull the video down and then it’s a month’s worth of work gone down the drain. His discography is easy to access though which is great for all of us! I hope music keeps playing a magical role in your life!
And this is where I will share with you all the most amazing band ever: AND SO I WATCH YOU FROM AFAR This is one of those bands that is a pull off just about anything . Give them a listen and you will hear exactly what I’m talking about . I am a huge fan of the endless shimmering album
Honestly, had never heard of them until now. Super cool! Thank you for sharing them. Any other gems are welcome.
Juat like beagle with bakertskateboads
This was a fantastic video. It's rare I don't use a Jerry Finn produced song as a reference track. He really was "the man behind the curtain" for so many world-changing albums. He doesn't get enough credit. But like you said, I don't think he would have wanted the attention anyways. Which makes me respect him that much more.
That means a lot, thank you for watching! His tracks make such a great reference and energetic reminder through the process of making our own music. That level impact is what I love about music and how it can just keep reaching us, even if we're not here anymore.
hey brad, great video of one of my favorite amps and I know a lot of LA guitar players used these amps but I believe the company was founded in Northern California and still remains up here.
Hey Kevin! Thanks for watching! Yea huge boof on my part. I’ve since edited this, thanks for your help. I’m born and raised in the Bay Area and know better. 😅
@BradDollar lol no problem awesome thanks for fixing , great video .
I was thinking I would actually hear it not talk about it. A waste of 11 minutes
Hey thanks for watching! This is just Part 1, as noted in the title, thumbnail, top pinned comment and in the description. Part 2 is minimal talking, all demo.
Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/EQDLxSjjfks/видео.htmlsi=nVCz7kIUQ2Q4sk-A
How do we know you didn’t play us the actual studio stems since you have those available? I would rather you used something that you don’t have the stems for.
Hey how's going! Firstly, thanks for watching! The good thing about this is you can try it yourself and see if I'm lying or not. It's free and you can give it a shot right now. Secondly, there's a bunch of people in the comment section saying they had success, so I think it works? Third, I can't use something you know because it would violate RUclips's copyright laws and this video would get removed. It's happened to me before and it's not worth the risk. Lastly, what do I have to gain to from lying to you and making this fake? It's a free video, on a free platform and I'm not getting paid by anyone. I'm genuinely excited that this software is out there and just want everyone who needs it to know about it. Again - you can test all of this for yourself to know. Thanks for being here. I know the world is full of scammers, but I'm just a dude trying to share some knowledge. Be well!
I’ll even take it a step further, I’ll make you a private video that I can share and then you’ll know for sure. Pick the song, paste the RUclips link for it here and I’ll send it back.
I have the mxr EVH phase shifter but to tell you the truth I prefer my joyo classic flanger .is that crazy?
Honestly, I believe it! I'm constantly impressed by the clips I hear from those things. And now great, they have a mini amp I want 😂
The ISA pre is not a cheap circut….
$500 or less per channel for something great is damn cheap, friend. Especially if you get a used one for $1000 or less. Then you’re talking about $250 a channel. That’s cheap by all accounts. Thanks for watching!

Great solo, you're so right! Definitely belongs in the extended edition.
I've had one on my board for 30 years now. That and the DD2 are the only two pedals I have kept through it all.
