Unfortunately, I only got the first 30 minutes of my summit section but as you’ll see, the combination of more confidence, better bike setup, and having pre run, my race day performance was night and day better than practice. I have to thank Dustin Davis for the invite, and the rest of the 805x team for letting me ride with them. It was an honor and dream come true to race in Baja. Race recap: ...

It’s hard to put this out there for the world to see. Pathetic, disappointing, poser!! Just a few words that come to mind watching my first 60 miles in Baja. I started my prerun way too late in the day with a improperly setup Kove. My rear tire was one downfall; rock hard with a rock hard mousse that had me skating off every rock and getting unsettled using the rear brake on downhills. The othe...

This is the teardown of our race bike after 300 break-in miles and 500 race miles. Not a single loose bolt. Exactly 1.5 liters of oil came out with minimal metal material (oil sample sent for testing). No significant wear. No grease found on any of the linkage or shock components. Battery failure during the race likely due to overcharging (charging at 14.7 V).

The company "COOBER" has just created an ECU for the KOVE in Europe. Maybe it's available in the USA? The COOBER ECU worked great on the KTM TPIs. I have no feedback on this product at the moment. Having fun is the most important thing !!!
Which tower did you buy? Type c from Uncle wangs and did it come with the future eyes? If not which future eyes did u buy?
This is on the type a tower. The future eyes are the ones included with the package on uncle wang’s shop that has the specific brackets. Great quality and putting the setup on our race bike!
Hello, do you think this water tank could be filled with oil in order to to some oil change on trails ?
I don’t see why not! It could hold enough to do two changes, I believe.
Hey, is that an oil level plug on the new case?🎉
Yes sir! Camel ADV for the win!
Hey wich plateholder ist this with These Turn lights, very cool
It’s just the Tusk universal street legal kit.
@@DirtByk Whats that? Where can i nix this? Imfrom germany 😅 the Turn lights are very nice 🧐 Thanks
what FmF pipe fits on there?
There isn’t one. This is a knock off fmf for a ktm 450 off Aliexpress with a custom welded midpipe.
What is the flip out mirror brand?
PowerMadd hand guard mirror
IMO the heating problem is because the advance timing key, and maybe a different exhaust will help too. To avoid heat from the exhaust to the right tank I installed a heat shield sticker in the tank.
I’ve installed the reflective tape as well. My tanks still push fuel. I’m going to remove the timing advance and get a new exhaust to see if that helps the heat. Also, I think i need to remove the one way from the rear tank to the front tanks so it stops pressurizing the tanks.
@@DirtByk I have Euro 5 model converted to pro model, I never had problems about tanks spilling out fuel.
@@GranXian669 that’s amazing. It happens almost every ride for me.

Hi friend, that road is excellent, I walked it a year ago!! And congratulations, you upload very good content!! Are you from Nogales, Arizona?
Thanks Jose! It’s a beautiful area! I’m up in the Tucson area.
Thanks for the update Bro!!! This Kove 450 Rally make very fun moment's 😊
Riding is in my blood, the Kove is keeping the fire lit!
Your making me itching to race mine when I get it! Im hoping I can git gud enough to come after you guys when I do!
Let’s go homie!! 🤘
Hi, I agree with your assessment about heating up - the bike needs a free flowing exhaust, no restrictions and no adaptors at the inlet, with a Pro ECU. An XRacing would do. Probably your first section is heating up a lot and it helps to keep the fan on all the time - we normally wrap it up with fireproof pipe wrap on the Kove. For weight saving, you can remove ABS completely and set your bike like an enduro bike with direct cabling, remove the switch key block, simplify your handlebar as much as possible; of course, you would remove the OEM dashboad and have only one lcd screen. A suspension revision front/rear is a must and probably you should have done it earlier. Good luck!
Those are all done or on the list to be done soon! We’ve sourced a Showa rear shock and forks were freshened up but internals all looked like new. We’ve increased the fork oil quantity a little as well. With my personal bike I’m 💯 going to a different exhaust and tune in an attempt to cool it off, plus remove the timing key mod.
Thank you for posting. I liked that you showed the struggle of doing it on an improperly set up bike, followed by a bike that was set up closer for you.
Thank you brother! I really appreciate your support!
Hey man great job on the baja, but im just wondering, is the kove’s reliability good out of the box? im really interested buying one for moto camping/adventure on the jungle for couple days at a time. Is the engine reliability good and the electrical reliability good? And is the ‘pro’ package makes it better?
Thank you for commenting. That’s our whole purpose for racing Baja; prove the bike’s reliability. The Baja 500 was a brand new bike with no modification. Be bike performed well and our video shows the bike had minimal wear from the race. I ride very remote Arizona on my personal bike and have never been left stranded. The pro is setup does Rally racing. The pro standard has the race exhaust and ecu tune but the street legal equipment. They are so closely spec’d you’ll never know the difference.
Thanks for the reply, and please don't take this reply in the wrong way. English is not my first/native language, so i'm not that fluent, but is it because my youtube had crashed or you use some "accent" that makes me don't understand the second half of your reply. "Thank you for commenting. That’s our whole purpose for racing Baja; prove the bike’s reliability. The Baja 500 was a brand new bike with no modification. Be bike performed well and our video shows the bike had minimal wear from the race." This sentences are loud and clear. But this sentence " I ride very remote Arizona on my personal bike and have never been left stranded." are confusing. What's your personal bike? and what is "I ride very remote Arizona" ? And this "The pro is setup does Rally racing. The pro standard has the race exhaust and ecu tune but the street legal equipment." What? Sorry if this reply sounds rude but please don't take it in the wrong way.
Great video. What are service intervals(oil, valves check) for this bike?
I believe it’s 5k valves, 2500 miles for oil.
What exhaust is on yiur bike? The one I tried in the showroom in Nanjing China my right heel sat on the exhaust/header , super annoying, hated it, looks like yours is tucked away more?
It was really easy to take a muffler and have a shop weld a mid pipe in. I was also initially annoyed by the stock pipe and my heel resting on it. It honestly took 30 minutes telling myself to put my foot one inch further out on the footpeg and it wasn’t an issue again. However when i had the midpipe welded I took that into consideration and moved the bend back just a tad.
@@DirtByk ahh sweet that's really good to know
Looks amazing. Are you runnin the Dakar?
Oh how I wish! Dakar is unattainable unless Willem Avenant can decode Dakar for us. Hey! I never thought Baja would be possible, but here we are ! Who knows?! Maybe one day🤘
Howz the seat concepts - which did you get?
I went with the suede comfort seat. It’s the bees knees!
You also in Arizona? Looks like it..
We sure do! Southern AZ!
@@DirtByk nice
You show how much better anyone can do with a properly set up bike. I have had the suspension done on the last two bikes I have owned and it is a game changer off road. I did not do a single one before that and it severely limited what I could accomplish.
Totally agree, properly setup suspension makes all the difference.
Nice bike! Cheers from Brasil
Thanks Carlos!!
Awesome job. A Baja race has been a dream since I was a watching Johnny Campbell and dust to glory as a kid.
You and me both, Cody!! I never thought it’d come to fruition! Now I’m stuck in a Baja daydream wanting to go back. 😂
Beautifull bike😍
Thank you!!🤙
Regardless if you're on the clown bike or not. You are the one doing a Baja, and i think that's awesome. Good luck and be safe.
Thanks, Jon.
looks like cast aluminum, that was machined.
You got it! This part was updated in subsequent shipments to the states.
Cool behind the scenes. Thank you for posting! We never get this view of the course.
Glad you enjoyed it! Posting failures isn’t the easiest thing to do.
How do you like the bike at slow speed riding? Does the engine lug or does the engine create more heat when you riding slow? Is this suitable for more single track whoops riding or is it more made for open desert/ gravel riding
It’s a rally bike so it’s made to go fast. Slow speed stuff makes the engine run really hot. The engine is a jerky when trying to navigate technical terrain but some say that’s just a tuning issue.
@@DirtByk can jerky engine be fixed by having a different map
@@TheShrini23 yeah, so they say. My personal bike has a rekluse and that takes away a lot of the off idle jerkiness and smooths out throttle inputs.
Hey! I’m about to hit my first 500 miles! Got any suggestions on oil and filter? Anything else I should do in my first interval?
Hey, what’s up Kyle? You of allll people opening that can of worms!😝 Are you trolling me? 🤙 I’m stoked you’re riding a Kove. For the past 15 years I’ve been running the conventional 10/40 Rotella T in literally everything from liter sport bikes to 450 mx bikes, and the proof has been in the pudding; I’ve yet to have a motor failure in 30 + bikes. The motors that I have had to crack open have looked pristine. The wire screens you’ll just clean with brake cleaner and here is the paper filter: a.co/d/eGdj8r2
@@DirtByk I greatly appreciate the suggestions! I may not be the fella you’re thinking so no trolling here. I’m Connor and actually based out of Florence so the next time you get out, let me know and I’ll try to keep up with ya!
@@BackcountryAdv ohhhh whoops! Sorry about that. I thought you were Backcountry ADV Moto. Very similar name! Oh nice! I’d love to get out with some more Kove riders. Hit me up on IG or fb!
@@DirtByk no worries! Just added ya and ordered the filters! If you have any other suggestions for me, I will gladly take them!!! Looking to learn from others before I find out the hard way!
Did the bike get crashed early on in the 500? Looks like the forks got twisted in the clamps and that caused the stantion wear. My kove has 2000 rough miles on it and the fork chrome still looks perfect.
Those marks are on my personal Kove. And yes, the forks did get twisted in the first 500 miles I owned the bike. Thanks for pointing out the potential cause on mine!
man.. your street looks close to my pops old house in tucson. (rita ranch)
Opposite side of town! It all looks very similar. I initially live down by Rita when we moved to Tucson. Definitely a nice area with lots of riding out the back door.
@@DirtByk cool. i'd like to get back there to do some more riding... great content obtw.
Its cool to see this bike catch on... Other manufacturers should have listened.
I think they’ll come around eventually. For now, the Kove is a legit offering, despite the political hate.
@@DirtByk would be cool to see if you guys can do something about the weight of this bike. The abs seems to be a heck of a start in this department!
@@jjjjrrr678 we’re also not filling the rear tank.
What voltage does other kove charge at ,if its 14.2 try that regulator on the onther kove. I am guessing you already thought of that thou. I have been running my own design capacitors on all my fuel injected ktm bikes since 2012 they are great backup.
Yeah, the other bike charges at 14.2 while riding. At 14.7 at an idle, it’s cooking the battery. We have a replacement enroute from the manufacture.
@@DirtByk easy fix just annoying 😒
A nissin front brake should fit 1:1 on the front wheel and fork. The first 100 or so Koves where delivered with genuine Nissin brakes. The sprokets bolt on in a KTM pattern, you can just get other ones for any newer exc or sx model. The weels are copys of a KTM Rally Replica wheel in the rear and a ktm rally replica wheel, with a Honda hub in the front. These are copys of Haan Wheels. If you want the more durable rally wheel order a them from Haan Wheels in Germany( rally replica back, crf fromt) On the stock brakes the pads are the same as on my 2018 crf 250 r as well. The 49mm showas fit the kove as well. As far as i know, yu-an and Showa are in the same conglomerat and probably shared blueprints. My guess is that the internals are the same and that they are just produced in china instead of japan
Great info!!! You saved us a ton of research. Thanks for taking the time to type that out.
Oh wow, that is gold right there!
Really considering this to ride in the mountains here in Colorado, will be watching your prep with keen interest!
You wouldn’t be disappointed in that purchase. It’s not the best option, however, for tight single track or slow riding. It can do both, but runs hot and may push/boil fuel if pushed hard going slow.
The glitter at 7:18 is no big deal??? Huh?
100% normal for break in oil.
Merci pour vos informations.
You’re welcome!!
Any issues changing over to a KTM front? I take it no one is interested in doing aftermarket wheels yet for the Kove
There’s one guy who has sourced aftermarket wheels. The front end suspension and wheel setup is tbd. Stay tuned for the build video/info.
The Kove is a serious machine and it's here to stay!
💯
Are you changing those components because it's going to race or because the stock is subpar?
The stock stuff performs really well. Suspension is a science and there isn’t anyone local with Kove suspension knowledge. Depending on how the internals look, our guy may see what he can do with with it or look at sourcing like Showa stuff that he knows how to setup. Our team has riders spanning from 150 lbs up to 260, so finding a happy medium is a challenge.
They're still pushing this thing on Instagram, but it doesn't seem to have the capabilities & quality of the Garmin Zumo XT2 in 2024.
There’s a reason all the race teams use the TT exclusively. I did not see a single Garmin navigation device on a race bike in Baja. If you’re looking for turn by turn directions the Garmin would be the way to go. If you want back country tracks, loading gpx tracks, and the ability to see the screen in any light, the Voyager Pro is the go to.
Question. I live in Havasu (opposite corner of the state) and have a fair amount of interstate to get to riding areas I enjoy around Prescott, PHX and Barstow. Now that you’ve done the mods (pipe, sprocket, ecu, timing key, windshield), how miserable will I be on the interstate to get to those areas? My 500EXC was terrible and frankly wasn’t a revelation on the trail. Will this be tolerable at 70-75mph for 2-3 hours without stepping up to a 690/701 and dealing with their deficiencies on the trail? Maybe I need a PR7…
The PR7 would be a great choice. The Kove is still a single cylinder dirt bike but handles the road much better than the 500 exc. The ktm’s vibrations killed it for me as a dual sport. Some big guys love the 690 as a dirt bike but I’m not a fan of the how the bike carries the weight and handles off-road. The kove spans the gap between dirt bike and dual Sport better than anything in the market. If you’re going to do some road work on it, I’d keep the 49t rear sprocket. Cruising at 75 with that gearing is tolerable.
You could also take a look at the SWM Superdual
Tyler is a Rockstar! Say a prayer for him .
Thank you! He’s the best, and often in the prayers.
Black gas tank with no fuel guage is never a good choice. 😂
Yeah, just need to know your range. I’ve had black tanks on lots of the bikes.
Where did you get the fuse box?
It’s just a universal box. a.co/d/efaogOp
Great ride there, mate. Ogling a Kove 450, so a few questions: - Would it make a good "all rounder", general transportation for Mo-Fri, trail use Sat/Sun/Hols/Events, or is it just too much money spent and better look for something else? Asking because my other bike of interest is the CFMoto 450 Ibex (450MT here in Italy) which is a horse of a slightly different colour but (judging from other YT channels) quite trail-worthy. - What's your tower setup, especially the speedo on top? - I'm not a trail rider yet, by Rekluse I suppose you mean the clutch manufacturer. Which one did you install, I looked them up and there are no parts specifically for the Kove
Thanks for taking a moment! I think the Kove is the best all around off-road bike. It’s not going to be great for stop and go traffic as it runs hot. The CF Moto might be a better street bike. I’m running the Uncle Wang tower and Trail tech Voyager Pro gps on top. The voyager pro is the best off-road gps on the market imo. Again, it’s not a turn but turn gps unit. It’s a backcountry exploration unit. The Rekluse is the auto clutch. I really like the rekluse and have been using them for years. Lots of info out there on all these products.
After upgrading the ECU and removing the CAT, how is the Rekluse performing? Do you still suggest using the medium RPM engagement springs?
Much better! It takes away a lot of that lag between throttle and power. There’s some drag on the motor with my current setup, which i like because it still engine brakes. But you can’t idle at a standstill without the clutch chattering trying to engage. I’d you want that, you’ll be to go to the high engagement springs.
