In between the hectic schedule we also received our new freezer which needed installing and I thought I'd give an update about the status of my hunting license. Wonen in Zweden VLOG#1: Hooi verhuizen, veel sneeuw, slaapkamer behangen.

Buckshot is illegal in Sweden.
Not that I'm aware. Maybe I'm using the wrong word. I mean 12 gauge shells with US3 sized pellets. I took the hunting course a few months ago and all US sizes of shotgun shells are legal, you should just use the correct size for the right type of game. What's the source of your information?
@@Tom_Brouwers Nothing bigger than US1 is legal in Sweden. Naturvårdsverket is the governing body for what weapons can be used. Shot sizes for Buckshot are different than Bird shot sizes. Bird shot sizes in Sweden starts with No9, which is 2mm, and each step up is 0,25mm larger. Anything smaller than US6 is generally only used for clay targets.
@@CandidZulu I see. Then it was just a matter of me using the wrong word. I meant the larger pellets like US3 till US1 instead of the smaller ones used for birds. Thanks for the clarification!
Interesting guns, I hope your hunting will be successful!
Skitjakt på dig!
Surprised at the .22 for practice. And u need to be careful with neighbours being close with it. Ricochet can happen and it’s not good. A good spring air gun is a great choice for practice. And even small game hunting
@@marcusd2380 they're lead bullets so ricochet can happen but not as likely as with steel/larger bullets. Also I'm not shooting in the direction of the neighbours. The direction I'm shooting has nothing for many kilometers and I'm shooting downward into the ground. So I'm quite confident it's not remotely risky.
@@Tom_Brouwers I have a 22 as well but hardly use it. Mainly us a .22 air gun and as u will know the pellet are led. Sometimes they can come right back at you. It’s happened me a few times. And that’s an air gun. Get a pile of sand or something behind the target for practice.
@@marcusd2380 if you shoot into dirt there will be nothing comming back to you. I fired thousands of rounds, probably ten thousands and i never had a problem like this with no calibre. Yeah if you shoot 25m or so on steel targets there can be little pieces that are flying back to you, so if you shoot this distance use eye protection. If you shoot into a pile of dirt there will be no ricochets, they only happen hat certain angles, so you would need to hit the dirt pretty flat, wich is not possible if the pile is high enough and the next thing is that ricochets are always flysing in the direction in wich the bullet is traveling and the exit is pretty flat, so if you hit the grounde in front of your dirt pile the ricochet will fly into the pile. So there is no real danger if i build something to catch the bullets or if he shoots down somewhere.
That shotgun is indeed beautiful - I'm very jealous! Congrats on getting everything done.
Could you please do a longer video about the process to get gun license in sweden as foreigner? God bless!
@@estventor I plan on doing a Q&A soon and will include it.
What guns are you going to buy?
@@davve54321 I'll post a short video this Wednesday about them 😊
Imponerande att du lärt dig så pass mycket svenska på så kort tid att du klarade att göra jägarprovet på svenska! :D
Ziet er goed uit allemaal.
I am Swedish 🇸🇪 and find these videos so positive. People like you and your partner should be given a medal for all the work you put in and your willingness to adapt to the local community and culture - getting that hunting license is so important. Many people think living in the country is about independence and not having to rely on others when it is in fact the opposite, both for practical and social reasons you will be more dependent on neighbors. If/when you have children that will be an important anchor. You should definitely keep the wood stove no matter what. Also look into getting at least a rudimentary wood splitter, so you don’t need to do it with an axe, which will wear you out rather quickly.
Brilliant repair skills!
Hi! There is a reason that the arm is made of wood and not metal. The wood is supposed to break and protect the more complex mechanisms if you hit a rock or something else that is to hard to cut.
Wat knap dat je zoiets weet te repareren! 😊
Good to see old fashioned horse sense in repairing just like in the old days-----well, maybe they didn't have welding equipment, but the concept is still the same. If it's broken, you fix it rather than buying a new "toy" to replace a tried and true design from who knows how long ago. Thanks-----it reminded me of my dad and grandpa doing similar repairs on the ranch in Wyoming, USA.
Just for your information, in America that part that broke is called a pitman arm. And they have to be exactly the right length and weight, or they will brake again.
@@galeogle thanks for teaching me a new word 😊. And I'm sure it's not a fix for the ages but it will definitely hold out longer than the taped up wooden one!
Nice film, and a warm, warm welcome to Sweden.
Hello, you should protect the new planted trees, because the animals like to eat the new leaves!!!
I love that you get the help inside your community and pay the people living there. This is so great for integration. I‘m really impressed how you two are doing this. Just one small tip: dry your wood inside the barn, not inside the house. It will leak some resin at some point and this will ruin everything in the visinity of the wood - been there, done that 😀 Veel plezier met jullie nieuwe huis ☀
Wat leuk, welkom in Zweden! Het ziet er gezellig uit bij jullie! Groetjes uit Zuid Zweden.
Nice job on the stairs (bikkelen), am really enjoying your videos.
“Mossy Bottom’ RUclips channel recently posted a very instructive video on compost. He moved from the UK to Ireland to live a self sufficient lifestyle and has now moved to Finland and is starting all over.

Very courageous!! When we first moved to France I was shopping more in tool shops and DIY stores than dress and shoe shopping. Unimaginable. 🤣🤣Your wood burner in the kitchen is lovely and if your electricity is as temperamental as ours would be a great back up. Your animals seem to love the move Bon chance et Bon courage👏👏👏🤞🤞👌👌
AMAZING work! Awesome effort and results! Reminds me of my early days moving here. Keep on keeping on!!!
Also, where are you getting your hunting license? Ive been looking for a place
I took it in Karlstad but I hear there are places nearer as well. They just don't give courses that often. A neighbour is starting in Lesjöfors in November I think. And yes we live close to Lesjöfors 😊
Oh, I hope you like it here. Is that close to Lersjöfors? I work in Persberg

Impressive undertaking, with a steep learning curve! We bought a similar homestead 12 years ago and we know the struggle, although we are Swedish, born and raised in Värmland. 😊 I don't want to be a besserwisser, but there is an old saying here in Sweden about firewood that really has logic to it: One fells the trees in winter (the ground is solid frozen and hard, thus avoiding damaging the land), process them into firewood so they are ready by Easter, and then they dry (outside, in piles) and are ready by midsummer. Then one moves the firewood to dry storage in a woodshed (with good ventilation). There are a lot of reasons to this, humidity in the logs and in the air being important factors. Splitting wet wood is preferable and logs from birch will rot really fast if one doesn't split them open the same season. After midsummer the air gets humid and firewood won't dry up in time for winter. Too dry (old) firewood is also not the best. There's a whole science to this really! In the beginning there is so much to learn and too little time, but we learned the hard way that processing firewood like this is the best. Regards from another homesteader 😊
Interesting video and a beautiful property ! Did you find a job in Sweden or do you have another source of income ?
Thanks for sharing this journey!

The modern freezers and coolers usually requires an ambient temperature of at least around 12C degrees. The compressor cannot work below that temperature and your frozen foods will thaw and get ruined. Unless you have found some special type of freezer you will have to move it to a heated room.
This one can work fine till - 15. I've asked a neighbour about it and he's never had an issue with having his freezer stand in an unheated room.
@@Tom_Brouwers I hope you are right :) Its a terrible waste if if you get all your meat and other food ruined.
@@erikjaving I specifically checked. The energy rating is based on ambient temperature of 10 degrees and higher although it works till - 15. However the energy consumption might go up drastically, changing its energy rating. I'll still keep a close eye on it during the coming winter though as I also had my doubts at first.
You do as you like with your plot but I was surprised you planted trees in the old meadows. That old "kulturlandskap" is on the down, and trees are at an all time high basically. More and more old pastures are lost to more "economic" forestry. Pollinating insects need meadows. The most herbs grow on fields that are grazed and not fertilized, or harvests of hay were taken once a year. This will let lower flowers grow and bloom and not just tall grass. Let a farmer harvest hay or do it yourself to keep the old farming landscape.
You have a good point and since planting those trees I did change my mind. I wouldn't mind some more shading and shelter near the stream but I don't plan on planting any more trees in the meadows, apart from some fruit trees in one small part on the other side of the road.
7:22 - Tomato plants don't need insect pollinators. Each flower pollinates itself when "shaken" by the wind. So if there is no wind (as in your case), you should just manually "shake" the flowers by gently tapping each flower cluster a few times with your fingers, then they pollinate quite easily.
This is actually a very small property which the owners left to survive somewhere else. What are you going to live off?
@@anneelgersma9114 ehh thank you? And to answer your 'question': a job maybe? Maybe next comment you can try to sound less like a disappointed grandparent. Just a thought 😂😜 Oh and by the way. The previous owner lives a 5 min drive from us. Met him again on our road yesterday and had a friendly chat. Lovely guy and very much still lives in the village.

If you want to have a quick stove i would look in to something called " induktionshäll " its really quick and when you turn the stove off the stove plates wont be hot as long as an usual stove :) , Welcome to Sweden !
Never ever remove a woodstove if you're not gonna replace it. You will want to have it when there is no eletricity for a few weeks.
@@Dunken88 but I did say we want to replace it. It will only be removed at the time the new one has arrived.
Välkommen till Sverige! Have you considered solar and batteries? It's kind of cheap now in Sweden and you could be entitled to tax write-off on the installation, if you're paying taxes in Sweden!
@@henrikparksjo7980 tack så mycket! We have considered it and got a quote for solar but that was only for grid connected panels that wouldn't work if the power fails. An off grid system would be much more expensive and not interesting for now.
Why are traditional houses in Sweden painted red? I'm just new here in the channel. I come from the Far East where we have no snow. Just rainy and dry seasons.
