NO, you haven't found the Battle of Brunanburh, because it's HERE!!!!
The location of the Battle of Brunanburh has been one of hot debate. But now Historians are claiming through recent archaeological finds that the location is now officially found, on the Wirral. Excuse my amateur contraire!!! but no it is not on the Wirral.. it's only on the Wirral if you ignore ALL of the sources, and swear you know better. It is not on the Wirral because it is much more likely to be.... HERE!!!
The earliest reference does not refer to Brunanburh, but a place called Wendun or Weondun

Apotropaic Magic and House Protection | Evidence of Witchcraft?
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.4 месяца назад
Were our Ancestors Witches? This is a much debated question. Can we say that witchcraft was purely a modern revival, or is there evidence of people performing acts of witchcraft and magic in the past? Brian Hoggard suggests in his book, Magical House Protection, Evidence of Counter Witchcraft, that we can answer some of these questions by looking at the real archaeological evidence left in old ...

Ah interesting research, must have taken some time on that deep dive
The wirral only makes sense from the point of view of the shortest journey for the dublin norse. but strategically doesn't make sense. Your more central position near many roads and rivers seems alot better for the northubrians and co as they had gathered weeks before athelstan had organised and this position would give them more opportunity for raiding, watching for troop movements and escape, the wirral unless you had a boat was a death sentence. the northumbrian and co leadership weren't fools, owain and constaintin had been around for a while and knew athelstan was not to be underestimated so to bottle yourself up in the wirral does not make sense. i'm no expert in saxon place names but if you've interpreted them right, you've got a good shout on the location
I agree with you, plus marshy land, not the best place, and it's an advancing army, which obviously hadn't advanced much, maybe looking at their shoelaces. I have found refence to places around their (sorry yorkshire pronunciation... there...)being named on dunn.. for the river don...Just through glancing around. Seems much more likely to me that te place is a river
The entry in the Anglo Saxon Chronicles is written in a northern English dialect which is still spoken today. AD dccc.xxxvii her aethelstan cyning - eorla ðryhten - beorna beahgifa - ⁊ his broðer eac - eadmund aethling - elderlangne tir - geslogon aet - saecce sƿearda ecgum - ymbe brunanburh - bordweal cloven - heowan heaþolinde. AD 937 Here Athelstan signing - all of th[e] writing - born a begiver - and his brother is - Eadmund Athling - elder long not to you - goes looking at - says sweared he come - he's at brunanburh - bird well cloven - Here won Heatherland. The key to its location is on line six in the Anglo Saxon Chronicles. heowan heaþolinde. - Here won heatherland. In Egils Saga the place is called Vínheiðar. Vin is the colour, as in vin rouge and heiðar is the word heather. When the heather is in flower the colour of the flower is Vin. Brun is brown which is the colour of the heather when not in flower. The places of Dingesmere, Othlyn, Brunanburh, Bruneber, Weondune, Brunanbury/biri, Brunanbyrig, Brunandune, Vinheðr and Heðulonde can all be found in the same area. In the late 1500's this area was still known as Æthelstan Moor. This area is located further north. (Not on the Wirral.)
ahhh but where is this land called Aethelstan's moor?? I was wondering where Vinheidr came into it
@@TheWitchInTheWoods Sir William Bowes commr. for middle march stated Excreable murders are constantly committed, whereof 4 new complaints were made to the lords in the few days they were here, and 3 others this month in athelstonmoore. The contagion has touched that part of the bishopric adjoining Northumberland, “ along the higher parts of the rivers of Tees, Wear, and Derwent,” and now instantly an honest neighbour One Simpson is a prisoner in Liddesdale taken by the Elliotts out of his house near Durham, and held to ransom for £100... The higher parts of the Tees and the Wear, i.e. where they meet is the Great Dun Fell. West of Bowes, above Brownber.
Interesting idea. Also Burghwallis near the Old North Road in Yorkshire has been proposed. The trouble with the Humber theory is that it was recorded several centuries after the events. I look at the various theories in my book 'The Lost Battlefields of Britain' ...
I agree, there are other possibilities, But the oldest tellings speak of meeting pilgrims coming back from Beverley, and Aethelstan going to Beverley. I also think that such a famous battle was only retold in greater detail in history, rather than with greater confusion.. so I would argue that, and also many many many hundreds of years closer to the event than modern scholars and archaeologists. I haven't looked enough into the reasons why other sites are possible..but not convinced. due to the enormous evidence against it, that it is on the west coast
❤❤❤
What is this about i follow all viking history
It's the story of how aethelstan united all of england.. and why england is still this country, even though the vikings won it back just before the normans nicked it
Very interesting video and a fascinating subject. I attended a Michael Woods lecture on the subject and the audience were surprisingly animated on the subject. 😁 I think there were a few from the Wirral there.
Oh I bet that was interesting! Was the room divided much?? There's always been a bit of East/West side competitiveness hasn't there. Glad you enjoyed the video.
@TheWitchInTheWoods I think it's an argument that's been rumbling for quite a while. 😁 The lecture was in Doncaster, there were a handful who sounded like they were from Wirral way, they were very passionate about it.
It'll be an outrage a travesty if the Wirral Delululanders get their way.
A very interesting proposal. It is about forty years since I first saw Bromborough suggested in a Society of Ancients article. I was painting a Viking wargames army having watched Michael Woods TV shows. My friend who swapped from Napoleonics to Ancients to get a regular game and got me to do the same was from Bromborough. I am from Yorkshire so a Viking army seemed most appropriate and I have worked with folk from the places you mention and moved near to Castleford. A fellow commenter on Scotland History Tours and other channels called me King of Danelaw because I kept going on about it. He is a fan of Vikings and is also from Bromborough. You can see why I really enjoyed this. I will mention it elsewhere, including History With Hilbert channel. He has had videos from an author who looks at an area to the east of Doncaster and he is studying Norse history, having done a degree in Anglo Saxon.
Yeah, being from Yorkshire the whole idea of taking Brunanburh away from us is a slap in the face.. how dare you..It's obviously here.. we all know it!! Getting any academic recognition for it is another thing. Being without a PhD I do wonder how you could get anyone to take you seriously! Who is the author?? I will have to have a look or that.. thanks. Also I know very little about Bromborough's claims.. interesting to research more of it.. Thank you King of Danelaw

I believe the site was near Banburgh near Doncaster - the geography fits wth regard to roman roads a local chapple and well , and an escarpment close by - plus its location close to the Humber - armies were moving down from Scotland - i could go on - its a fascinating subject
Yeah I think we're on about the same place...I cannot Banburgh Doncaster on Google Maps.. at first I thought it read Bamburgh.. it's the same place.. Barnburgh...please do add to the evidence x
@@TheWitchInTheWoods omg ! My spelling is off- it should say Barnbrugh - the same place you've identified - local histories mention long barrows in the area which have sadly been destroyed over many years - Theland was was forested around Hickleton and Marr for many years until deforestation and farming started to change - ryknild Street runs close and runs east to west - St Helens Chapel and St Helens well is situated close to this site- between hickleton and barnbrugh - sadly little is left of these sites however they are identified on maps - there are other hints which local histories possess however ti's text would be too long ! I've met locals from the area who believe as I do !!!
@@helenwright6133 I totally agree with you. I think it is the location. It's got more validity than the wirral... So sad that much of the land has been destroyed now. I wonder if any archaeology has been done in the area and what the results were?
@@TheWitchInTheWoods thankyou so much for your investigation and post - im not the only one who thinks this is the spot!!! I recently spoke to a resident of the area and she mentioned a dig that had occurred recently in the area - I'm trying to find out about this at the moment - just spoke with my brother and we talked about other settlement names around the area and as your research has put them in a new light - I'm so grateful you posted - thankyou ! Apologies for typos !!!!!!!
@@helenwright6133 Thank you. I was very intrigued by the correlation of those names..but no one has found Ding's mere.. Danes Ing.. but there is it!.. how hard have they been looking?? Ferryb ridge was the only crossing of the river aire apart from Castleford.
Thank you. They met the Scots coming down and sailed into the Humber. It would seem reasonable that it's in that location, and heading South, not north...
This is fascinating.
