Really enjoyed the video! Glad it popped up, new sub and looking forward to more stuff!
@@TriumphalReads thank you so much! I’m glad to see ya here
Nice tips. Right on about the talking about books. Shoot, connecting with other readers is what this whole BookTube thing is about as far as I'm concerned. In my case, reading slumps only seem to occur as part of the anhedonia that accompanies depression, so they're not so much "reading slumps" as they are "everything slumps." Afraid I haven't cracked that particular nut beyond stupid platitudes like "keep on truckin," "this too shall pass," "fake it till you make it," and the like. 🙄 Reading "fun" books is an interesting point. I enjoy many kinds of light fiction, but I currently live in a situation that has me so paranoid about "keeping my mind active," that the vast majority of my reading ends up devoted to some pretty heavy nonfiction. I almost force myself to read something lighter on occasion in an effort to prevent burnout, and BookTube has actually helped with that. I never would have predicted arrival at a place where I would need accountability to meet a "fun" quota, but here I am. 😂 But anyway, interesting and thoughtful video. Have a good one!
@@BryanM.R.-prionic1 good to hear from you Bryan! I appreciate the comment. I hear ya on the everything slumps, those can be challenging at times. That is when those light fiction books are key to get back into reading habits for me personally. I’m a big mood reader, don’t really plan what I will read over an extended period of time. So I find having 2 books going at once, 1 lighter book and 1 more dense piece is perfect for me depending on what I am feeling. Thanks for the kind words!
The point around chatting with friends and family about books is an interesting one. I think it's a really big one in terms of increasing your motivation to read and without having ever been in a 'book club', I imagine it's the same with them. If you have people that enjoy reading and talking about the books they have read or are reading, it makes you want to be part of those conversations. It almost makes reading a social activity in some ways, whilst at the same time being as solo an activity as possible haha. Unfortunately, I don't really have those people in my life currently. I feel most of my friends that read don't really talk about it all the much.
@@VellaMagic yes exactly that is the gist of it. I don’t have many people like that either in my life, mentioned my girlfriend in the video but apart from the that sometimes my conversations fall on deaf ears. Part of the reason why I started this change was to have a space to talk about books if nothing else to myself! Youre welcome to join in those conversations with me (as you already have with multiple comments) I appreciate you coming back to my videos here!
@@BookswithSam1 No worries, I'd love to find people I can chat reading with! I'm sure it'll help my motivation to read rather than play video games. Haha
@ I feel ya, video games capture me from time to time which is okay. As long as it’s not alllllll the time lol
@@BookswithSam1 Agree!
I love that you read anything and everything. I’m trying to branch out more because I believe that I can find books I love in every genre.
@@Maeve_Ever_Books all things considered, I am still very much new to reading. Only reading for a bit over a year and a half so I am trying to figure out what I do and don’t like to read. Also reading different genres it’s fun! I can sometimes draw parallels between stories of vastly different genres and I find that so cool. I appreciate the comment and you checking out the channel!
Good video Sam :)
@lxssbeth2024 thank you very much! And welcome back to the channel, I appreciate you sticking around :)
thank you for all the tips!!!
Wecome to the channel! Thank you for the comment and checking it out!
A tip that helped me a lot, but it also took me a long time to accept and implement: You don't have to struggle through a book, because you're allowed to dislike a book and abandon it. Either for the moment or forever.
@@CharlieCatHimself13 love this! Reading is a hobby afterall, so if you are not enjoying the current book it’s okay to put it down! I frequently take breaks from some of my longer books to read a shorter one and spark my love of reading back. Great tip! Thanks for the comment
Let me know what tips YOU utilize to make reading more fun. Drop them here with a comment, thanks!
Into the Wild by John Krakauer can be finished in 7-8 hours and has made me very introspective in the past few weeks since reading it
@@dubbushehe I mention that book in one of my previous videos! Read that one in high school but looking to reread it sometime here. Such a good book I need to revisit here soon. Thanks for the comment !!
Some real chunky books in your plans! On average, how many pages would you say you read a day?
@@VellaMagic good question! It definitely varies from day to day. Some days I read 0, some days I read 150+ depending on the mood. On average I would say I read 60-75 pages a day typically
@@BookswithSam1 I noticed, according to your goodreads, you jumped straight into Stormlight Archive without reading anything else from Brando Sando first. Clearly based on your ratings you have loved the books. What made you jump into the series first particularly? And do you intend to read more from him?
@ yeah I just jumped right in. Partly because I didn’t own any of his other books at the time, and partly because it is so popular and I hear so many good things. I do love that series and am itching to read Wind and Truth. Since then, I have acquired Mistborn era 1 and warbreaker, which I intended to read in due time. Looking back on it, it may have been better to maybe start with like Elantris or Warbreaker to get used to the world and his writing. Truthfully, I read the first 300 pages of Stormlight 1 like 1.5 years ago and stopped bc I was just too confused. But, in picking it back up again earlier this year it was so fun and I knew enough since I had read the beginning before to understand it much better this time.
@@BookswithSam1 That's cool! The Stormlight Archive seems to be like his best work, so some of the early research I did before jumping into his writing was to start with something like Elantris or Mistborn. I'm currently 20% through the final book in the first Mistborn Trilogy. I've had a good time with it! Would recommend.
@ sweet! Now I’m more excited to hop into mistborn. That may be my fantasy series to work through this year
Welcome to BookTube! Dr. L's out there hearlding your arrival, and I dig what I've seen so far. Oh man, I might just be a lttle jealous of that Oxford Shakespeare. And I know I'm supposed to be involved in a Crichton group read around that time -- I guess Rising Sun is the one. Cool that you were able to get your vehicle going again. Afraid I drive a beaten, scarred monstrosity of a Ford F-150 that I'm starting to believe will never die. Or at least the dog allows me to conduct her around in the thing as she supervises my work day. I probably drove something less utilitarian in my "early days," but that's all been obscured by the mists of antiquity. Have a good one!
@@BryanM.R.-prionic1 hey Bryan, thanks for the kind words! The more the merrier when it comes to the read along. I think that will be super cool. I remember my brother had a 97 ford ranger than just kept on goin even when he was in a position to buy a new car. Ended up selling it to a guy who rode his motorcycle 11 hours to get it, then chucked the bike in the back and drove off. I bet it’s still out there somewhere! Thanks for the comment, appreciate you checking out the channel!!
Oh and our “trio read” has grown to maybe 4-5 people. So we’ll call it a group read. Yes still on track for April!
@@DrL_Reads the more the merrier!
Sam, you have a Fiesta ST? Very cool. Do you like it? I used to have an Integra GSR, intake, throttle body, manifold, headers, hi flow cat, cat back, coilovers, clutch and flywheel and a few more things. Got 2nd in an autocross once. Might look into the new Integra S eventually.
@@DrL_Reads so cool! I love my car, it’s a riot to drive. That Integra is making me a bit jealous, I cannot lie. Sounds like a sweet ride
@ It was fun!
I've been re-reading the Garret P.I. novels by Glen Cook; they're a nice change of pace from typical fantasy in that they're predominantly mystery stories that happen to be set in a fantasy world. While there is a contiguous story in the background of each consecutive volume, it's absolutely not necessary to read them all to enjoy them as they feel mostly self-contained in each book. If you've never heard of or read any of them, I feel like you could easily blow through one of them in a day or two as they tend to be on the shorter side!
Thanks for the comment! Great recommendation, I do tend to like those self contained stories but having some character development overlap between book to book is good too. I’m sure some things spill over boom to book which is cool to pick up on. I did just make a video one some shorter books you could blow through in a couple of days, feel free to check that out if you need some other recs! I appreciate you being here
Hyped for our buddy read! I got my copy yesterday
@@Already-Overbooked oh let’s goooo! It sounds like a good book for sure!
Hello again :) I had to smile a little when you talked about your “boy toy”, as a girl I drive something like that too! :D My current book is non-fiction and it's about friendships between women. It's not very exciting so far, but it was a gift from my best friend.... Tomorrow I'll probably make an exception to my rule (no buying books until my TBR is at zero) and treat myself to a few new ones. We'll see, maybe I'll read a second one in parallel afterwards. So far I've liked all the formats of your videos. If you feel up to it, a reading vlog would also be interesting.

@ perfect, I could use some of that at times
Hello again! I haven't read any of these 5 yet, but The Great Gatsby is on my TBR. I've just added “of cattle and men” and “heaven has no favorites” to that list. They both sounded really good, though I'll have to read the former in English in the hope of understanding it then. As for your question about what I'm going to read at the weekend... I hope something. Yesterday I finished Matthew Perry's autobiography and haven't been able to decide on a new book yet... I'll have to process that a bit first. I don't really have any short books. My shortest ones are all around 300, although you can easily finish them in a day or a weekend.
Welcome back, always great to see you here! Those two you added to TBR list are so so good, check them out for sure. I just finished a book here not 15 minutes ago and need to dwell on it as well. Picking the next book can be challenging at times, hoping something jumps off my shelf in due time here for the weekend.
@@BookswithSam1 Sometimes a large selection is not always the best. I'm struggling with whether to try my hand at a science fiction novel (the current trend would be “Project Hail Mary” by Andy Weir) or whether to venture into the great Game of Thrones turmoil...
@@CharlieCatHimself13 ooo thats a tough dilema, I would say go for the Game of Thrones now and then if you need a break from the action, but are still in the mood to read that type of genre, that is where project hail mary can be read. Now I remember you saying that you are not the biggest fan of audio books, but I hear that Project Hail Mary specifically is superb on audio, just throwing that out there if you wish to take in a novel through another means
@@BookswithSam1 I've heard that too, but only from Americans. Unfortunately, I don't know if the German version is as good...
@ ah understandable for sure, pardon my ignorance in that regard to my recommendation
Great Gatsby is a great short read! Open throat sounds like nothing I’ve ever heard of before, tempted to add to my TBR list. One of my shortest reads was a chilling book I read for school a while back called The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell. I think it’s only 50pages!

Thank you Peter! A great recommendation for sure, stay tuned for a tour of my classics bookshelf coming soon, see which ones you have and have not read.
First of all: I think it's so nice to see how self-confident you've become in such a short time! Then to your tips, I find it so exciting how we are complete strangers to each other and yet have such similar habits. I read in the morning while I bake my rolls, I read in the evening while I cook dinner. My book is always lying around somewhere or I take it with me almost everywhere. To the doctor, for example, if you know in advance that you'll have to wait a long time. If I work from home, I read during my lunch break. Reading in the evening before going to bed is the perfect way to switch off and relax. Unfortunately, I'm not an audiobook person, but I always have a book on when I go to sleep (even if it's always been the same two for years). Your tips are definitely helpful for someone who doesn't (yet) read that much, as they are really very good tips. You simply recommend reading at times when the alternative is pointless scrolling on your cell phone or watching TV. Looking forward to your next video!
Wow Charlie thank you so much for the compliment! Part of the reasoning of me starting this channel was to work on self confidence and speaking skills, I am glad there is a difference in quality even in such a short amount of time! I have started taking my book with me wherever I go. Waiting for a coffee or in the doctors office, the pages add up. Also reading over lunch while I work from home just like you. Thank you much for your continued support, I always look forward to hearing from you.
@@BookswithSam1 I'll take that as a compliment, thank you very much. I'm really looking forward to seeing your channel grow and supporting you as much as I can from here. On that note, good night! (It's 21:02 here right now)

There is a lot of ways to read . With soothing music , having a timer , reading early in morning or reading before sleeping 😪 . Just have a good mood .
@@alifalamvines9970 reading early in the morning is a cheat code. I find when I do it, I tend to read more throughout the day! Thanks for the comment, I appreciate you!
Great video! Nice list!! I listened to the first Harry Potter on audiobook but was uninterested and didn’t pick up #2. I DNF’d Song of Achilles. Personally, I thought it was terrible. I have The Road but haven’t read it yet. I’m a big fan of thrillers and crime fiction so some of my disinterest could be genre preference related. The books that got me into reading were Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson, the Camel Club series by David Baldacci, and the Reacher series by Lee Child.
Understandable for sure! Definitely give The Road a shot, sounds a bit more your tastes as opposed to some of my selections. Now, my thinking as to why I liked the Song of Achilles and Harry Potter may be that I did not know any better so I just thought it was all good. My tastes have changed since then, I like more classical books and ones that give me a new perspective into someone elses life story. I appreciate the comment and respectful discourse nonetheless, this is what its all about!
@ Absolutely, good sir. I still truly think that HP is a classic and one of the best fantasy series, or even book series in general, out there, even though I didn’t enjoy it. Its popularity is undeniable. One of my favorite authors, Robin Cook, finds himself on a lot of BookTubers’ “worst books” or “lowest ratings of the year/month” videos. People are different and I think it makes BookTube more fun. I’m really looking forward to The Road. I also have an abridged version of the Count of Monte Cristo (got it for free) that I hope to get to this year. Just be open and honest about what you like and don’t like. Like you said, respectful discourse makes BT better, whether it’s agreement or disagreement. I am really enjoying your book selections and your videos and am glad you joined BT. Keep it up!👍
@ Thank you so much for the kind words! Loving this small but mighty community we are building here. Will definitely keep it up, thanks again!
Another great video from you! I can't name one book that got me reading, as I have been reading continuously since I was a child and throughout my youth. Sometimes more and sometimes less, but I always had a book on my bedside table. Red Rising is also on my shelf and is patiently waiting for me to read it this year. This will be my first time with science fiction. I'm very excited. I've put The Song of Achilles on my wish list now, you've made me curious about the quote. And Harry Potter! Classic. I want to read them in English for the first time this year, as that's the only way I own them... They've been on my wish list in German (my mother tongue) for years. Best regards

The Road is such a moving story of a gruesome journey encountering the duality of humanity. Definitely worth a read to anyone considering. When I decided to read for fun again after college I re-read some of my favorite books from my young teen years- The Giver & To Kill a Mockingbird!
