Fixing a Cracked Limb on my Primitive Osage Bow - TheWayIDoIt
Im making a Tamarind lingbow and pushed it to the highest draw weight i could. All went well and at my final photo of the tiller before sanding and varnishing it... i heard a click. It was a lifted grain too. Ill use the superglue and cord wrap method also. The bow still holds up in tiller shape and does not develope a hinge there. Hoping the repair holds, it was a lot of work, but if i see a hinge forming ill scrape down 2-3 back rings to a fresh back surface. Ill soak the thread with flexible epoxy, isnt the superglue on the thread brittle? I guess it doesnt bend that much through it. Nice video.
Thank you for your detailed instructions and close clear camera work. It's very helpful.
Thanks for sharing. Good solution. Maybe PVA glue glue would work better as it stays flexible . Superglue becomes like glass. And when shooting why grip bow soo hard , don't you get tiered on your left hand?
Is there an Easter egg arrow shaft hiding under the grass in the last frame?
I was all in till the end , twisting the string , my hands wont do that ..all worn out
Honestly man. Between making bows and arrows and potentially leather working on top of that, I'm happy to outsource the strings
Thank you for utilizing all parts of the animal! This is how it's done folks. Turned out awesome, thanks for sharing!
Super good information super good video thanks man
Great instructional videos!
No idea why i got Ray Mears vibes from this.
Very nice 👍
Been making my own strings for 25yrs . Good video
Do you make bow from dry wood? Or does it need to be moist?
Has to be dried for 1-2 years minimum unless doing a fast drying method
STOP making dumb videos.
Super Idee. Gratuliere!
Glue some pine slats to the end of your leather vice pads, you won’t regret it
How long should you let your bow cool so that it does not crack
I let it cool completely before drawing it back, but not to avoid cracks. Bending the bow before it cools can undo the work you put into it or possibly cause a hinge since the warm spot is weakened until cool.
Im using sinew on the back of mine rt now to repair tension crack , hope it works
Did it work out for you?
@@thewayidoit6312 yep and i retillered limbs after
New sub tillering 😩. Im working on making osage bows , the one ive made popped up piece grain today while shooting , in the process of a sinew repair
Heck of a choice in music 👎🏻
Thank you
Nice bow! Where did u get that shirt? New sub btw
Thank you, the shirt was a gift.
Just seconds into the video, I can see this bow is not made of hedge apples.
Lol you got me there
Thank you.
Kick ass
I just broke a limb on my first bow for the same reason. It is wild maple. I'm going to try this and then hang it on the wall. 😋 Another nice video.
Very cool. It's going on my to do list. 😊
Very cool build Never saw feather backing before looks great
Thank you!
Where do i find these draw knives? I imagine my antique planers wouldn't be the right form of tool since you're drawing the blade not pushing it like the planer
The old ones are best. Look in flea markets.
Man i live in oklahoma and the osage orange trees are plentiful what section of the darn tree do you ise that isn't all knotty? Do i need a big tree? The hedgeapple tree had ridiculously tough wood to cut too lol i wanna try my hand at making my own bow especially a bow from the wood that the french revered bois d'arc your video was awesome but totally misleading. You make it look easy af
Look for Osage trees in forested bottoms where they grow straighter.
Would the process be the same if I wanted to season the whole log? Just strip the bark and sapwood and seal the ends? Would you still need to seal the back as well?
I recommend splitting the log first because a whole log will split some on its own and form cracks where you may not want them. Splitting the log relieves these internal stresses
@thewayidoit6312 I see. I guess the only problem is that I'd want to keep the wood whole since it's a small diameter log for a walking stick. Maybe it'd be best to carve out the rough dimensions then seal it?
@@benchase7537 if it's for a walking stick than what you said.
@@benchase7537 I would actually let it dry with bark on and then strip bark after it's dry for a walking stick.
A small foam roller is great for pushing down the feathers.
Have you ever gone from this stage and then used a stave dryer? If so, how long has it taken to dry them down?
I've never done this and would be hesitant to try on Osage. It likes to split too much. Slow and steady is best.
@@thewayidoit6312 Thx!
You make is look easy. :)
I like the turkey spur shelf. Nice idea on that one!
Thanks!
Whats that backing good for? Just the look?
Just for looks!
Cool thanks
Not seen a backing wirh epoxy before. Is it flexible? Does it harden the back or add more flexibility or just protect? Otherwise: cool! Pretty short self bow, has to be a very good wood, this osage. The little imperfections make it so organic
It's a flexible epoxy made for fishing rods. Purely aesthetic and not for protection. Osage is arguably the best bow wood there is!
I just came across this vid and bro you created an amazing mind blowing bow. The details are phenomenal especially the spur. I had never seen the feather backing done until just a few days ago, but this one goes to the top. Great work bro
Thanks for the kind words!
Hi there. Nice work with your bow. One question. Does the feather backing fullfill an onther reason besides good looking? Like making the bow stronger? Like a linen backing?
It may prevent an errant splinter from lifting, but in all reality it is a mostly aesthetic backing. If you are looking for strength then stick with linen/rawhide/sinew.
Very helpful video! Thank you
Superglue (cyanoacrylate) is no good for wood as a gap filler. The only thing holding the splinter down is the thread. Youd be much better off using thin hide glue or wood glue. Superglue in time will break up like sugar even if you never touch it. It is bad when stressed and or heated. This is such a common mistake with superglue users. Your repair will probably hold but only because of the thread wrap. Superglue will help protect the thread from wear so that is good.
You are right that superglue alone would not hold. That is why the fix includes the thread. If I did this today I would have used tb3 on the splinter and thread just because I've learned over time how great it works on just about everything. However, this fix is still going strong and shows no signs of wear despite heavy use.
Saw your video by accident , like the way you start the splitting never seen that before
Thanks the machete gets it going way easier than starting with wedges. I've gotten away from using a saw.
Just to make note…. I know you’re dealing with Osage here, but it should be said that removing the sapwood may not be ideal for all species. Some staves you will want the sapwood as your back.
Absolutely, great point.
Is the sapwood needed for an ash bow?? Thank you.
Excellent job of explaining the process of the procedures
Do you let them sit 2-3 weeks before splitting or immediately split? We don't have Osage here but a lot of invasive black locust.
They need to be split immediately or as soon as possible or the log will begin to split on its own. This will form cracks in places you don't want them and can ruin or reduce the useable parts of the stave. Whether you choose to split or not, seal the ends of the logs/stave to slow the moisture loss.
Have You tried using grease?
No, but I've used vegetable oil with success. Only problem is that it can cause issues if you are going to sinew back the bow. I had trouble with sinew not adhering so I only use dry heat on bows that I back.
WOW
The real challenge is avoiding, and invariably fixing (when the avoiding fails)....chatter....on a hollow limb bow lol.
Interesting...this is the first video I've seen where the entire bowstring is done in Flemish twist....rather than just doing the two ends and leaving the center loose to be served together. It takes a lot of the confusion out of string length for sure...just stop and make the loop where you want your string to end lol. Thanks for sharing.
Well done video. Just what I needed. Added to my playlist for primative bow making for future reference. Thanks!
