Nice video. I live in shelter cove
Most seismically active region in Ca no thank you.
were you afraid the pot growers might shoot you ?
Robert Diecks is my grandfather. Guess we are related bud, this is cool to see. Funny thing I also make axes
been there done that...."dork for the forest".....keep sharing thank you
"keep going"
thanks for sharing these vids...I love the history lessons "KEEP GOING" timestamp 24.08"
I'm much better at making axes but I'm learning more every time I try to do one. My editing skills could use some help but I'll keep tryin... thank you for watching... Dock
The Eucalyptus trees beside the Petrolia Table Cemetery are among the largest in the nation.
Oops, took a minute to research it, “World’s largest Bluegum Eucalyptus”
I do believe that it is ok/legal to walk to the Pioneer Cemetery if you go through the gate just west of the store. I have a few relatives resting there, my mothers grandmother at least.
The entrance did say it was okay but that it passed over private property. I didn't really want to video walking out to be respectful to the property owner. Thank you for watching... :) Dock
We did the drive in October and got lucky. The Petrolia zebras are still around, having more babies.
Dang it, I was hoping they were still there but I didn't see them the last few times I went out. Good to hear they are still there.. thank you for watching... :) Dock
My dad loved to fish the Mattole.. I was young girl back then. We would camp on gravel bars.
It's beautiful out there, one of our favorite spots. So much history too... thank you for watching... :) Dock
Really enjoyed watching your videos as I learn so much of history. Thank you
I'm no historian but I am fascinated by our history so I'm doing my best to honor what I know... thank you for watching... :) Dock
I didn't know much about Petrolia until today. We fished the Mattole River pretty hard back in the day when we could keep 3 steelhead a day. I caught 3 one day and the smallest was 17 pounds. Back in the late 1980's. Thank you for all the history. Steve Cooksey
Thank you so much Steve... :) I'm not a historian but I'm interested by it all. If I had to do my education all over again I'd get my PhD in History rather than Psychology... :) I try to be as accurate as I can but I make mistakes... thanks for watching... :) Dock
Another awesome vlog! Love how you include the history of the area with old photos etc. and that you honor the indigenous people that were here first.
I appreciate the feedback. I'm doing my best to honor the history of our Homeboldt... :) I try to be as accurate as I can... thank you so much for watching... Dock
Hi Doc, I really enjoy your videos. Thank you…. Keep up the great work! Jeff
Thanks Jeff... I'm learning as I go, my editing skills could use work but I'm trying... thank you so much for watching... Dock
I can remember several fishermen"s wives coming to the dock at Eureka Fisheries to cut the cheeks out of halibut and salmon carcass .. they used an old pocket knife with a broken blade sharpened into a cutting point. Really efficient.
Thank you for watching... :) Dock
I know this is a year after this video. I was wondering if your Uncle Bob is still alive and in New Zealand. In 1976, I was a USN young sailor in San Diego, and prior to getting underway for a WestPac, I took a scuba certification class on base. Chief Diecks was the instructor. I remember him as being a great instructor but hard core as well. His assistants were also tough. They may have been in the teams. The sea stories would flow after class at one of the local haunts. On our night dive off of Point Loma, I remember Bob came back onboard the chartered boat and discovered that his Rolex watch was missing from his wrist. He went back down, tracing his previous movements, and found it. All of us rookies were duly impressed. You do some great things honoring the veterans and their service. Thanks, Tom Bazemore, USN, FTG2, 1974-1978
Hi Tom, he is. My cousin Jenny, his daughter, just recently came back from visiting him. He's preparing for his final descent for his final landing... He was quite the patriot; our family is proud of his service. The SEALS back then were heavy duty. He did 2 tours, volunteering for his second. He briefly held the deepest free dive in the world. He told us he smoked a pack of cigs to prepare... :) always had a sense of humor. Thank you for watching... Dock
@ Thanks for the quick response. Glad he’s still alive. I’d like to think that he inspired his students to venture into the depths of the ocean. Only a few of us were fortunate enough to learn from Chief Bob. The fin appreciation swims I remember well!
Great videos! Was just camping at the BLM CG a week ago! In via Ferndale, out to Redway... epic!
We love it out there. The next video is focused on Petrolia with another visit out to the Mouth Mattole again... thank you for watching... :) Dock
Great video, brought back great memories. My Grandparents lived in what was called at the time Johnnys Trailer & RV Park in the 50's & 60's when he moved out there to help build the plant. Johnnys has changed in many ways and in many ways it's the same. I used to fish off those docks all the time and catch sand sharks off of the beach and sell them to the Shipwreck Aquarium. The beach has sure eroded in the last 50-60 years. It used to be so big, the parents even built a ball field on it for us kids and now the water is practically up to the road. Again, great video, thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Thank you for watching... :) Dock
Is this a charter or a private boat?
Captain Lowell is the boat owner and Captain. He runs Humboldt Charter Company so you can book a trip with him and go out. He's great.... thank you for watching... :) Dock
@ thank you. I definitely will set up a trip
Nice looking crabs. 😋
That time of year... we stock our freezer by section and season of the year... :) thanks for watching... Dock
Got to thinking about the crab stand in Fields Landing and I think it was Boche"s? Great place..
Gotta love crab season. There are several boats on Woodley offering fresh crab too... :) thank you for watching... Dock
Wonderful video. I've lived on Humboldt Bay since 1950 and went to high school with captain Lowell. I need to book a trip.
Our family loves Lowell, great person and Captain... thank you for watching... :) Dock

Wonder what the Klamath River looked like now that the dams have been removed? PS - thanks for posting video of Eel river!
Stay tuned... :) the Mouth of the Klamath is on my list to re-visit now that I'm starting to get a hang of flying the drone... :) thank you for watching... Dock
@@HumboldtAxe I look forward to that one.
Going back and forth on 101 and 1, I always stop at the "slab."
Any day the sun is shining is a beautiful day in Humboldt County!
Agreed... :) thank you for watching... Dock
We used to play in those canyons as children.
It's pretty cool. I think the nightwalk is going again but I need to verify. Dock
Sequoia Park is another beautiful place to check out, I imagine you already have.
People don't realize hall of fame baseball icons such as Joe Dimagio and Ted Williams played at the original Carpenters baseball field behind the mill.
Would love to get pics if they're available. Didn't know that.. such history... thank you for watching... Dock
Been here since hurricane Katrina. Humbled county has the most moderate climate in the states, even when it’s soggy, it’s Never That tough at low altitudes. I just can’t deal with the direction of California. Selling off a spectacular homestead. Great people, just can’t afford it anymore.
Homeboldt... :) Hoping you the best... I think we'd all like to see some affordable changes... Dock
Beautiful Humboldt ! ❤
Agreed... Homeboldt... :) thank you for watching... Dock
the 101 bridge where the south fork comes into it there is a sign up on the bridge showing high water in 56.. that was insane water was 30 feet higher than the deck of the bridge.
Great video. The drone footage is awesome.
I'm starting to get the hang of it... :) thanks Mom... :)
I have breathing problems from the campfire in paradise. When the pressure dropped it really wiped me out.like I was drowning
Wow!
I was driving south on 101 from Eureka during the heavy rains of 1964. Water was high at Ferndale and the rain was pouring down. When I crossed the south bridge at Rio Dell, I could see the water flowing just a few feet below the bridge. Normally it would have been waaaay below the bridge, maybe 100'. It's my recollection that the bridge was either washed out or the approaches to it washed out. At any rate it was a very long time before 101 was re-opened. I flew back to Eureka and had to cross temporary bridges much later to get my car back to Eureka. What I remember most when I could drive north from the Bay Area was seeing houses which had been picked up by the flooding on the Eel and depositied against rows of trees downstream. I've never seen that kind of devastation anywhere else. When you look across the massive witdth Eel canyon and see the high water marks that are higher than the roadway, it boggles the mind.
I can't believe that bridge was still standing
Beautiful pics‼️. I’ve been down in the riparian area under the bridge bird watching. Love that area.❤
That was an incredible drone shot of Fernbridge. My family goes way back, my Moms grandfather arrived in Humboldt the same year the Bridge was built, I think you said 1906. He had the first fishing tackle store in Eureka Downtown, and rode the first motorcycle in Humboldt, an Excelsior. I lived past out past Berta in my College years at what was the old logging camp on the left fork. My uncle was Uncle Hap. I lived across the street in Eureka from a lady that used to play in a band in the old town of Falk.
That man really nice visual roundup of the area in the calm between storms... Stay safe. Enjoy that pizza😂
Humboldt makes it easy, I just try to stay out of the way of the beauty and let it speak for itself... thank you so much for watching and continuing to support our family's channel... :) Dock
Look at the NWS 72 hr accumulated rain. It was heaviest east of Chico with over 12" and maybe 14" in spots but in Humbolt County it was around Shelter Cove and Garberville at only 4-6 inches. I was watching it because the forecast for Garberville was for up to 11 inches over a few days but it never happened.
I drove up through it Thursday night. Got pretty haywire once I got north of Willits up through Garberville. Just glad I was able to get up to my home. Our road wasn't too bad, still passable. Our road gets flooded out a few times a year once the ground is fully saturated. Glad it's early in the year still. Thank you so much for watching... Dock
All hail the algorithm! Nice video, love that area. Going to watch some more later.
Thank you so much for watching... :) Dock
I always was concerned about underground springs and sink wholes
Especially down there around the Eel River watershed... :) thank you for watching... Dock
Thanks for the visual and update. Big fan of the Eel river watershed. Keep'em coming...
Greatly appreciated... thank you so much for watching... Dock
7:19 1950s born and raised Californian, Humbolt was my portal to wilderness living experiences before I got my driver's license. Fishing, hunting, building log cabins and experiencing pioneer life, learning survival skills and mountain climbing all happened before I turned 17 years old. Self sustaining pilgrims have always gravitated to Northern California, a great jumping off spot to explore the planet we call home... thnx4 the memories and the wonderful history lesson. Glad to see Humbolt still claims it's independent spirit! It's mysterious landscapes keeps a man humble and honest... a wonderful journey! You made an old man love living...
Homeboldt... :) our family couldn't imagine living anywhere else. This is the California as we know it... thank you so much for watching... Dock
Love that bridge and that area of coastal Humboldt. My employer, Wildlands Conservancy, has a nature preserve between Centerville beach and the mouth of the Eel river, called the Eel River Estuary Preserve. I work out there sometimes and always enjoy the beauty of the area, especially in the spring. This time of year the preserve sees a lot of flooding so access is limited. Love the vlogs Doc! Keep em coming please!
It's that time of year. I wanted to make my way back to Hookton with migration coming thru but the weather and work have messed with the schedule a bit... :) thank you so much for watching... Dock
I have visited Humboldt many times over the years. An old friend of mine and his father owned two of the three private properties up Bridge Creek Rd. My first time up I rode Greyhound buses from Los Angeles to Garberville . I then hitch hiked to Bridge Creek. I will share more with you later. You are one few people who will know of the places of which I visited.
Homeboldt... :) my family and I have been all over the county, couldn't imagine living anywhere else that's for sure... thank you so much for watching... Dock
