Can you pass the RSGB amateur radio foundation licence exam without studying?
I got 1 question wrong on my Foundation without any revision. I got a pass on my Intermediate without revision. I got 33/58 for my Full exam so that was a fail. This was all without revision in 2020. My grandfather was a Full Licence holder since I was born so I already knew a lot about amateur radio. I now have my Full exam again at the end of this month and I have revised so much and joined an online course but I feel so lost and not ready now than I did when I did no revision! I'm still only scraping by on my mock tests. But hopefully on the day I get all the questions that I have worked on and manage a pass mark
thanks, keith! so, on my FT-DX10 I am running a xlr condenser mic into a neve 1073 preamp / eq combo. i tried connecting the output from the neve to my radio, however at even the lowest level setting on the neve, i am getting what appears to be a blown out FM signal on the radio's screen scope while in LSB on 40m. will an off-the-shelf xlr audio transformer from amazon fix my issue?
nvm, i figured it out. i built this bal to unbal cable with an inline 600:600 transformer plus a 1k pot with the center wiper and right pins going to one input wire on the xlr out, the the cable is effective. good signal to the radio now. so, my chain is: mic xlr input > neve > xlr out > the cable with trans and pot > radio.
Back here 5 days later and after learning more letters and watching more vids, this one feels so easy now
1st priority for learning CW for ham use was that it it was the priority mode for shipping. So if you wanted to hang around HF, (as I did) you had to be able to understand it in case in case of maritime disaster or emergency. Then secondly, you also then had the skills to broaden your own Ham Experiences just for the fun if it. Took my exam in 1991 when CW was still compulsory for an A class licence. G0PLZ 👍
Yesss I did it with no mistakes 🥳
I think these videos are helping, thanks a lot! I'm excited to continue :) Oh and "fridge" confused me so much, I was like is that an "r" nah it can't be I'll just skip it XD
Outstanding lesson, love it. I'm trying to understand the differences from a DMR to the D-STAR and I was mixing together. Thank you.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Does anyone know if the irish and uk exam materials are the same?
@@aidanbrennan7389 the Irish exam is different. Much of the content is similar. If you go to the IRTS.ie site you can download the exam manual for free.
Very well explained, thank you! So after I key up a reflector, I need to then switch UR to CQCQCQ. My question is after I link to another repeater using AB1XYZAL, and key it up, do I also need to change UR back to CQCQCQ? And what about a direct callsign call to G4GCC for example, do I key it and then go back to CQCQCQ or do I leave G4GCC in the UR field for the entire QSO?
@@timbarnett4708 once linked change ur back to cqcqcq. I cannot recall regarding direct call. If you try with leaving the callsign of station you are calling and see what happens.
Ok thanks, I'll have a play. Great videos mate, well done
I have been task with getting our Universities Sat Tracking station up and running ... You may be getting lots of questions from me.... Thank You KC3ZDW 73's
Hello, I really enjoyed your informative video. But I was alarmed to see you used Yeasu FT-65’s as an example of using two separate radios to transmit and receive signals from LEO satellites. The reason for the alarm is I had just purchased one FT-65 due to a specific feature not many are aware of. It’s called VFO Split Mode. Page 7 in the Advanced Manual. It lets you transmit on VFO A and receive on VFO B. And as needed it seems like you can switch VFO’s to change frequencies to offset Doppler shift. This may be a new feature Yeasu added, don’t know. Or perhaps you have tried this feature and had issues. Or if you just didn’t know it’s ok. Just hoping I didn’t get the wrong radio. Regards and much respect.
@@tomleddy7620 i used the ft-65s as it was the first picture 8found.

Hi mate, just stumbled across this as you do on RUclips. Nice video. Hope you're both well. Just to let you know when I go portable or mobile I never use more than 10W - my radio of choice is my trusty Trio TS130. 73 4 now de G7CIY
@@KeithG7CIY Hi Keith, all good here and hope the same is true with you. QRP is amazing if you get it right and anything under 10watts is a real achievement. Catch up on the air soon.
What’s best antennas to start on satellites? Looked at the egg beaters Martin lynch selling, not sure how good they are, have ICOM 9100 radio, the beams for tracking stats look complicated as in software. Enjoyed your utube film. Mike M1KEY
@@michaelm1keyhardy865 thanks for the feedback. The egg beaters are fine, bit pricey but fine for a put up and go solution. The ideal setup is an ez/az rotator and a 70cm plus 2m beams. This is where you start to spend even more cash!!!

@@GCharlton56 yep, my bad! Glad you like them.
Cheeky. Added the "R" in Fridge...
QRP is only frustrating if you're trying to use an inefficient antenna. There are so many what I call "gimmick antennas". Someone new to QRP may get the idea they can work DX with a whip or some other snake oil antenna. Don't believe the hype... put up a wire antenna and QRP will become fun!
@@fintronics very true.
Google blocks WispDDE automatically and I am concerned regarding the download and installation of this program since it is coming from an insecure website. I know I can run a software virus checker, but I would like input on others' experiences.

Back in 1966 I heard a station in Germany running a 20 mW homebrew SSB transmitter booming into MIchigan, USA over my old tube shortwave and sounding just like a local. For about a week there it sounded like I could hear every HF transmitter on the planet. Stations were coming in and fading out on every frequency. I seldom even tuned the receiver because so much was happening on each frequency.
Good day mate. I m operating an e92 and I m trying to check my local dstar repeater. Do you have anything on this radio , which I could use ? 73 de SV4RIN
The distinction between AO91/92's uplink doppler and SO-50 was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for having the information I was specifically looking for! 73 from KE2CDK
I studied all AbC I got all correct letters I WRITE WORDS and I can read then I am happy because I know something new.
I like to learn this it is funny
Thankyou! But darn is this Dstart crap confusing. I've watched 20 videos and read many web sites, and played with my new IC-705 functions and still have no basic idea of what the heck Dstar is or what you do with it. I've gotten far enough to configure a local repeater that is a few miles away from me, and do an echo test, and the echo comes back loud and clear. So I guess I have stuff configured correctly. Maybe. Here are some very basic questions I haven't found an answer to. 1. Do the repeaters act the same as analog repeaters by default? That is, if I select a repeater on my radio, and I'm in the DV mode, will I receive audio of anyone that sends to that repeater with CQCQCQ? And I could just transmit back and talk like a normal analog repeater works? 2. What happens if multiple people try to transmit at the same time? Will my radio not allow me to transmit if someone else is talking to the repeater? How can I tell if the repeater is busy? Or does it allow many people to use the repeater at the same time through some magic and digital bandwidth sharing? 3. Are the repeaters normally used for local chatting like the analog repeaters get used, local nets, etc? Or are they used like radio swtichboards to connect to other operators located though "gateways?" to other repeaters for private one to one calls? 4. What is a "gateway" vs a "reflector" vs a "hotspot". What do they each do and why do we use them? 5. If I use my local repeater to "connect?" to a "gateway?" am I blocking that repeater from being used by anyone else? Or does it support multiple uses at the same time? Can other people see that I'm using it somehow and how I'm using it or what???? 6. I am getting the hint that a "reflector" is like a "chat room" where people can connect from all over the world and chat with each other just like we do with normal local analog repeaters, but that these are made possible by the magic of digital linking over the internet using Dstar. Is any of this correct? 7. on my radio, it sees to have a "reflector" mode.I can select and the "UR" field status display changes to "USE REflector CQCQCQ", What does it mean that I'm in the "reflector" mode? Have I done something to the repeater I'm connected to by setting this, or is it just my radio config I've changed at this point? 8. I see options for "Link to reflector" and "unlink..." You must tnter the reflector number. Ok. But if I link to a reflector, what does that do? Does it tie up my local repeater and make it link to this reflector for all local users? Or is it just a logical defined connection for me and my radio, so that messages from that reflector, get transmitted by my local repeater and hear it. But if I'm lesenting to messages from a reflector, can other people be using the repeater for their own use, like listening to a different reflector? Or can the repeater onlyi connect to one reflector so if I do that, I've blocked all other local users from using this repeater for their needs? 9. Any advice for a video or document or web page that gives a simple high-level overview of what Dstar is, and what you can do with it, that answers all the sorts of questions I asked above, before it jumps in to explain "you must add spaces" crap to how to "set it up" so I have a clue what it is I'm actually "setting up" to do? One way or other, I will figure all this out, but after one day of trying to dig into all this, I'm shocked at how many absurdly complex "starter" videos and web pages I've come across with none of them even giving a high-level intro to what point of all this is! :)
I bought the Yeasu 817 as my first radio. But I understood the 5w limit and what it meant. I have loved QRP ever since. and don't have a radio that will do more than 15. I have never used more than 5w. Frustrating sure. Fun, absolutely.
❤ HJ5RGG
2:55 The text is misleading. Noise arrives at the balanced amplifier input IN PHASE ("common mode"), not out of phase. The desired microphone signal arrives out of phase and is amplified. The amplifier is a differential amplifier and ignores, mostly, common mode noise that arrives on both wires at the same time.
You have given me the most comprehensive instructions so far. And the PowerPoint or whatever you used is fantastic. Seriously. I've been a ham for about 3 or 4 years now. Until a couple weeks back I've been mostly into DXing. This HT thing took me by surprise. I'm now wondering if the Icom ID51 (not sure of the name) wouldn't have been better. It just seems as if the Kenwood's architecture may be a little convoluted. Maybe it's the same with the Icom. For instance I went nuts trying to find why I couldn't do what the manual said to do regarding the up arrow. It said hold it down and you'd get to mycall or urcall. Not important as it didn't work. I finally found that I needed to be in the digital data area for that to work. I probably should just take a whole weekend and the manual and try to get myself familiar with the radio. I have been able to make local repeater contacts thankfully. I will absolutely be watching your videos a lot. And Thank You So Much for making this video by the way. I really appreciate it very much.
Thanks for your comment, it really means a lot to know that it was useful. Stick with it and have fun on dstar. Keith
Thank you for your comment, it really does mean a lot to know that it has helped you understand dstar. Stick with it and enjoy accessing the reflectors. 73 Keith
Once again, I'll post up my vote for the Horizontal Loop Antenna as the single best QRP DX antenna a ham can construct. It seems to take more of the QRP signal and get it out into the air in a useful low angle, omnidirectional pattern for making contacts......both transmitting and receiving. This assumes a 450 Ohm (3/4") twin lead "ladderline" feedline to a 4:1 balun then short Coax into the rig itself or into a tuner and then into the rig. I dare you to prove me wrong with any other antenna except a Rhombic directional when it comes to making QRP contacts. 73's, de KD5TXO
Whatever works is great for me. 73 Keith
Excellent resource for learning morse code
Thanks for the positive comment. Keith
Interesting. I think it very much depends on the background of the person. I took the exam for fun before I did any studying and got 18 correct, so very close to a pass. I have a background in computing, some *very* basic electronics experience and used to have a CB back in the day though. I also had previously been doing SWL as a hobby and had read about RF propagation looking into WiFi etc . So if I had only studied the licencing I would have passed.
Great video but i take my audio thru the Acc balanced modulator at the rear of radio avoiding the front end mic input which can be noisy and limits the lows on radio . Find it much cleaner on my icom and kenwood .
Justin, when you do connect XLR mic to kenwood, how does the wiring go? I noticed that kenwood had mic+ mic- and GND on both front mic and ACC conecctors. I took my senheisser mic and connected it to kenwood (TS590S) straight like that. Mic+, mic- and GND of XLR is connected to GND of TRX. I found no issues with this. Would be this correct? @TheHamRadioJunkie what are your thoughts on this ?
My goal is to have my Technician's License by my birthday in July. I'm going to get a icom-5100a and enter into this wonderful world of D Star radio.
Stick with it and hope to hear you with your call sign. 73 Keith
