Wool v Synthetic fleece blankets - Insulation for bushcraft and wild camping tested
As someone who did break a limb walking solo in the hills in blizzard conditions, the ease of deploying by simply pulling the bothy over you is a major plus. I used to carry the standard plastic bivvy bag, and there is no way I could have wriggled into it with such a painful injury. I have the Lomo, and it's striking how quickly it warms up when you want a break from the weather. I'm a convert.
Great to hear an anecdote from someone who has direct experience of needing some emergency shelter. Thanks!
I have same in green color since July 2019. Still like new. Slightly greasy. I clean it using leather soap and leather cream. Very good quality !
Nice one mate! Its always "good to have a go." The more you play around with the setting, the more you learn. 👍
Thanks Victor absolutely. Good advice for most things!!
I bought a new cartridge, I still have a fast drip. Can anyone suggest anything else I need to do or can try to fix this.
Nice tip. As they're about a fiver for a pair, I've always replaced them but this does save on the measurement and a trip to the store. One piece of advice I'd offer is to put the plug in the bath/basin so you don't lose the grub screw or cap if you drop them.
Ha, yes, things disappearing down the plughole is the simplest way to turn a little job into a real pain!
Try wetting the blanket in cold water then go outside and feel how warm or cold you are. Anything else is useless.
Closeted old gay leather boot fetish? Nasty!
Is it worth figure of 8ing the ceramic discs on a piece of wet and dry, prior to adding the grease?
Good question. It seems to work with just the grease so not tried it. Perhaps if and when the grease fix stops working will give it a go.
Ideal, saved me a new cartridge (for now). Had to take it out 3 or 4 times as each time I thought I'd fixed it - first the main o-ring, then the stem o-rings, then finally greasing the ceramics! How long does the grease usually last? (I'm guessing there's only so much tolerance the grease can make up for.)
You may be right. The grease on that bathroom tap is well over a year now and still good so hopefully it lasts for you.
This was a great experiment. I would like to see how a modern down camping blanket compares in this.
Down should blow it out of the water. Once we get some proper cold weather will start running some more tests!
@@bigskies2202 I just purchased a onetigris down blanket. It packs ridiculously small. Not the best brand but good enough for a few trips a year
Great video, worked for me. Saved me $20 and a trip to the big green shed. Cheers!
Thanks Aidan, yup it's simple but it does work!
@@bigskies2202 my wife just got home and pointed out that I've somehow reversed the direction to turn the tap on 😂😂😂. No big deal, at least it's not leaking anymore.
I have worn mine most days for more than ten years. We have been on some great adventures together. One resole about 5 years ago. One of the boots is now letting in a little water and proofing them doesn't seem to be helping so I have a new pair on the way. My old ones are still serviceable so I will be wearing them to work in as they are a bit more comfortable than the defenders that I usually wear for work.
Thanks Charles. Nothing better than a first hand testimonial from someone who has worn them extensively. The comfort really stands out for me.
Any update on this? Looks tempting
Hi Stephen. Yes a big fan of it and now sees frequent use. I have also bought a similar version from Outdoor Knitwear in black wool (brown). I like both a lot. The ABeale one is slightly softer feeling but that could be wool batch/even colour. Going to also get a boat neck version this winter as sometimes the high neck feels overkill.
I have just seen the outdoor knitwear onefor 91 pound on there website do you have other makes you would recommend or is the arthur beale the one to get overall for quality
Just bought my first secrid wallet. To complement it, I have bought a Victornox Swiss Credit card. Always been a fan of small wallets. I would have to say this seems like the best wallet I have ever owned. Normally buy leather Paul Smith mini wallets..
Good luck with it. It is still the one I choose to carry everyday versus my other ones.
I like what u did there bro, this is what internet is for people testing things and sharing results perfect
hansgrohe ceramic for kitchen sinks, 94008000 will come apart easily enough, but is built differently and will not go together, I suspect without the factory floor.
Just started welding and some good advice I read was if you get popping sounds (rather than a consistent sizzle), wire speed is too fast. If the wire burns up before reaching the work piece, wire speed is too slow.
I think this is sage advice. Certainly smoother sound, as you say a sizzle, seems to indicate smoother weld. even though for my car project am mainly doing dot to dot welds I think the sound is clearest indicator of dialing in the right timing for each dot.
I like the tap
My secrid vallet is also 10 years old. And it looks almost brand New. I think i can use it for 30 years before it looks as worn out as yours 😂
Ha. Yes it has certainly had an active life!

Yes it is set up for remote
One of the absolute best informative videos on refilling gas canisters. Specially the part about vapor pressure of different gas types.
Good review. Just subscribed! I use my emergency shelter to sit in with the wife to have a coffee and keep us out of the wind when we've walked up to the summit of various lake District mountains like Blencathra and Skiddaw. I did a little review of my shelter on my channel in case you're interested in having a look.
Thanks, will do! For sure, hopefully we avoid the emergencies but definitely ideal for tea/coffee and maybe a bit of flapjack!
@@bigskies2202 Nice one. Looking forward to checking out your other videos. 🙏
As a newbie to refilling gas canisters I found this video to be a very helpful approach to staying safe. Not going to attempt it until well versed in the subject.
Hi BIG SKIES and thanks for the video. As a wool guy (wool clothing maker), i love to see people checking out what wool can do. I think the key to understanding wool is to remember that wool is clothing made by Nature to enable a sheep to maintain a constant body temperature with minimal expenditure of energy. Lucky for us, our body temp is just slightly lower than sheep. So, when we wear wool, we are asking the wool to do the job for which it was created. All kinds of testing are fun, interesting, etc. But the only test that actually matters is the FIELD TEST. What does a person experience? How does someone feel? So I jumped in a river in 2017, in winter, and we posted on our channel. ruclips.net/video/HxbA7oYzAQ0/видео.html ... It seems strange to me, but since then we've gotten quite a bit of pushback, but always from people who have NOT jumped in the river. One of the critics sent me to your video. Thanks for the efforts and the interest in wool. I look forward to more of your vids! If you do jump in a river, please be sure to wear pure wool. Most of the woolens are the market now have cotton or synthetic mixed in. All the Best and Keep getting out there!!! --- Ralph
Thanks Ralph. A big fan of wool generally, and as ever the devil is in the detail. Not everything is created equal so I like to avoid blanket statements (no pun intended). Now we are moving towards the colder months I plan to conduct some more tests, and more wool experiments definitely in plan, including more field tests for my plastic free sleeping setup amongst other things. Heavily wool dependent!
@@bigskies2202 Keep on truckin!!!
Thanks for the review. Looking at buying this set, but i saw the comment below about manufacturing moving from Taiwan to China. Does your box say where it was made anywhere on it?
Hello, unfortunately not. I have two sets and the second seems ever so slightly different, in feel, from the first but not spotted a made in mark. Nor had any issues with either set.
7:10 A few drops of WD 40 in the creases of the can to prevent rust.
Good shout thanks Ivan. I like to give the tools a drop but never really.thought about it for the canister stored in the shed!
Cheers mate! I am incredulous that the high tech blaster machines need a piece of fancy card board to work....
Indeed, the good news being at least it's a cheap fix. I nearly went to the straight to skip option before discovering actually how fixable a thing this is!! Hate to think the amount that have made it to landfill on the basis of a glob of tomato on the fancy cardboard.
@@bigskies2202 exactly. We had to dig a bit.
I've got a stainless No 6 so I'm concerned to learn it's not UK legal for general purpose carrying, as a sedate 58 year old I doubt I'll ever be 'stop and searched, but I'll get myself a No 5 for peace of mind. Re the Opinel stainless blade not taking an edge sharp enough to shave with, when my No 6 is sharpened with fine Japanese whet-stones and then honed on a leather strop it'll take a very clean shave. I've also got a carbon No 9 which I agree does take an insanely sharp edge which it holds for longer, but the stainless blade is very impressive and is more forgiving if not completely dried after use. However, hair splitting (pun intended) aside, Opinel knives are superb!
Thanks for the insight. Yes, they're such a classic little piece of kit. Proof positive that in a world of cheap tat and conspicuous consumption you can still buy quality things made in europe for a relatively small amount of money.
Was that ceramic grease or silicone. You said ceramic in the audio, but it says you used silicone in the description. They have both.
Apologies. Hadn't noticed that. Should definitely be silicone grease. Stuff marketed for plumbers is readily available.
hydrostatic head of 3000mm is pretty much useless in rain,
Ta for the comment but would differ on that one. For a raincoat absolutely but not a shelter. A lot of quality tents, MSR Hubba, Big Agnes copper spur have sub 2000mm HH. I think the context of use is important so wouldn't worry too much about that for a sub £30 emergency or lunch shelter.
I've got a tent that I've had and used for years with a 3000hh and its never let a drip of rain in.
Daft question incoming Are all bath taps cartridge the same size?
Hi Stewart, no there are many many different sizes which is one reason why it is difficult to find the right size replacements.
No mention of the most-replaced O-ring: the one between the fuel pump and the fuel bottle, aka "MSR Fuel Bottle O-ring #429134" ??? How do you find out the sizes of the o-ring used (negative number, metric / imperial size)? Perhaps we can find the measurements of o-ring 429134 via same procedure?
Fair does you are right. I have not had to replace that one for some reason and didn't include as can't vouch for size. Small O-rings are pretty hard to measure accurately with calipers as the size differences are so small but the bottle one less so. There are some references scattered around the web so tried some of those to find what worked. A suggestions for the bottle o ring is size 213 which is outside diameter of 1.199 or 30.45mm and 0.139 cross section. not got my pump to hand as away from home this week but will sense check that.
Good review
Does any of your card got their plastic peeled off on the bottom? Cause mine does, not sure if use the switch harshly of it is just the quality of my card.
Not had noticeable issues here but given the nature of the mechanism to push the cards in a fanned fashion I would think possible especially with non standard card thicknesses. Not something have found a concern though within life of my bank cards.
I notice that at 4:03 the disassembly jumps to 4:06 where the slim brass tube (that has the o-ring) has been removed. How much force did you use to pull this tube out? I find my tube is stuck fast, forcing me to clean it in situ. I'd like to remove it but find it difficult to grasp with pliers.
Not much. Maybe try accessing through the top with the throttle plate opened. Would certainly not want to grip too hard with the pliers to avoid damaging the brass .
Any updates, did you find the right settings for the 20 gauge sheet metal. Bought the same welder. Just want to get the settings right, for tack welds. Thanks
Not sure how accurate these things are but that is pretty thin so would try 1/min first.
When you took the jet screw out I don't see a needle in mind I can take the jet out but I don't see a needle
Yeah to be honest these little carbs are really just a collection of brass bits with various holes, jets etc. if you take it apart, clean it up and reassemble without damaging it you should be good. There is probably a specific terminology for each part but not quite like a classic car carb am more used to.
Thanks for the great video but I have a quandary. Can I refill a 70/30 cannister from a 60/40 cannister?
I couldn't say for sure and wouldn't want to open myself up to guarantees. However the vapour pressure of 60/40 versus 70/30 is going to be something like 10% higher at normal temps. Given the operating range of temperatures the canister is designed for will almost certainly have some leeway I suspect you would be fine with a canister in good condition but would have to make your own judgement. A check on the gross weight of the canisters will give an idea on how much steel is in them. I.e. are the 60/40 built heavier.
@@bigskies2202 Thanks for your reply. No worries, I wouldn't hold you to anything 👍 Strangely the 60/40 gross weight is 351g whereas the 70/30 one is 381g. I'm in Scotland so it's likely I wouldn't be subjecting it to relatively high temperatures. The 70/30 cannister I'd be refilling is practically brand new, I purchased it last year. I think I'll give it a shot but maybe only try filling the 70/30 cannister to approximately 80% the first time. Thanks again for your response 👍
That was really great, I also found it a bit much money for a couple of o-rings. Thank you for sharing this
Glad to hear it. Yes I found it surprisingly difficult to find the info!
@@bigskies2202 Thanks again I already got them in the mail this morning, perfect fit. I put two new o-rings in and the stove is like new. I Found a website in the Netherlands where you could even order one single ring if you wanted to. The small size was €0.13 and the bigger one €0.19 a piece the postage was minimal as they fitted a regular envelope.
Is there an easy way to clean the filter? Just rinse with water? Or can they be found cheap? As one comes with the kit.
I use a Secrid mini Wallet for one year and absolutly love it. I already gave 4 Wallets as an gift to Friends and Family. Everybody loves it
Thanks for this! I need to rebuild my dragonfly pump as I had a masculinity undermining embarrasing fire on a family camp last weekend. In 2024 it seems that the expedition (pump) spares kit costs £47, yet a new pump with possibly worse quality plastics is £43!!!!! and half the O rings are out of stock at needlesports now. I suspect many of these fantastic stoves will get junked over the next few years for the sake of £1 worth of O rings.
Ha. I Know the feeling after setting fire to my feet. Glad to help.
Superb set of spanners. I don’t use mine every day as generally need adjustable’s- bahco or knipex - but when needed they have not let me down . Highly recommend.
Thanks Chris. Agree, super dependable.
Very helpfull, thanks ! :)
Great video! How is the set holding on since then?
Thanks. No problems. As said I'm not a pro but firmly in the tools I would save first if the shed was on fire category.
Really helpful video, thank you
Used the bigger 8-10 person units quite a bit when I was in a MR team. One of those over the casualty and team working on them gives a really good amount of privacy, warmth and comfort for someone who is likely scared and freezing. Rest of the team just had to stand outside in rain/sleet/snow/hail waiting for the carry off, so being inside with a bit of condensation was more luxury than discomfort. I also had 2-person and 8 person shelters, which I carried in case I needed them while doing mountain top radio ops.
Thanks @daveys. Great to hear about the usage from someone who has put these to the test in an MR team.
Nice review, thanks
Dont bothy
I would add that since you have the unit apart...rinse it in a water and vinegar solution to dissolve the mineral build up. I can see 'rust' on the outside of the ceramic disc you removed and some of the mineral deposit came off on your fingers. So soak the unit in vinegar/water (1:1) and gently wipe away the debris. For the internal ceramic bits, soak and then rinse with running water or use a compressor to blow the debris out.
Good tips thanks @TheWhiteleather.
Inspiring!
Thanks!
