Mykal (Michael) was one of the original members but he really wanted to be on Broadway. Check out VPs Just Sing was done during covid and they did Zoom to get the people that have been members or sung with VoicePlay. Mykal is there too. If you react to Just Sing, keep the captions on so you will know who everyone is and what is their claim to fame. You'll see the different musicals Mykal has been in and bunches of other stuff. Geoff has said that VP needs to make the song their own instead of just copying the original.

This was my favorite song from the movie. The combination of the menace of Scar and the hilarity of the goofball hyenas always appealed to me. I’ve heard from reactors who know a lot more about music that Eli is probably the most versatile singer, not only because of his range which is impressive, but the different tones he can put on his voice. He can sound angelic, he can riff, he can rock out. And he is an excellent team player. When Earl left, he sort of got moved into that high tenor position which meant some adjustments on his part. I am really happy to see that he is being featured more often than in the past. I think everyone expected Geoff to stay way down in the basement on this one. But personally I love his rock belts with those low notes sprinkled in rather than being the focus. I imagine that “meow” of his didn’t feel very good when he did it. But it’s pretty darn impressive! When it’s a song like this, or Oogie Boogie, or even Hellfire where it just calls for him to be the featured artist the other do an excellent job of supporting him. But generally, after looking at their older videos, they seem to do a pretty good job of spreading out the work among them on most of their pieces. And actually, Jeremy Irons is not the only one that sang it. When they did the “ you won’t get a sniff out of me” he blew his voice out on that growl. Jim Cummings, who was voicing Ed, the dimwitted hyena, had to finish the song for him. The guy must be a really talented voice actor because even going back and listening to it I can’t really tell.

    • @hwyla4416

The Lion King is actually one of my least favorite Disney movies but I absolutely love this version of "Be Prepared" by VoicePlay. This is a Layne arrangement and I think it's brilliant. Thank you for using captions. Did you notice the little additions in them? In the "Hyena" section when they're talking about prizes, they've added in "meat, we repeat", "endless meat" and "treat" in the captions and then when Geoff does his roar the caption says "meow". I see Huldra already filled you in on Mykal in her comment. I would add you may want to take a look at Huldra's channel as she just released a great comparison of the 3, yes 3, versions VoicePlay has done of this song over the years. Also, the guys have mentioned that, since Mykal was not as heavily featured in this as they prefer for their guest artist, that plans are in motion for him to join them again soon were he will be featured more. Also, he was featured in their multi-guest artist video "Just Sing" that was released during the Covid lockdown. Love your reaction, as usual!

Mykal (pronounced Michael) is one of the 4 original founding members of VoicePlay. He was their high tenor back then when they started their barbershop quartet in 1997. After a couple of years Mykal moved on to a successful Broadway career.

Misty Mountains has been my favorite for a long time. I find the pacing and the deep bass very soothing . Then he came out with I See Fire with each of the dwarves really getting to show off their own range. This combines the best of both in my opinion. It’s got that slow pacing where you can really appreciate that deep voice, but each of the dwarves get to sing a bit as well. And those harmonies! Delicious! You’re the only person I’ve heard so far that said it reminded him of you of Ghost Riders. It’s the first thing I thought of as they slowly came onto the screen. I’m always surprised at how different he looks with the various hairpieces and beards. But as Gimli he looks completely different. Part of it is his posturing, but when he’s looking around his eyes are fierce and doesn’t even look like Geoff. He is really channeling his John Rhys-Davies here

The song is actually from the Lord of the Rings. It's sung by Gimli while in Moria. I don't know if it's been kept in the movies though, I kinda watched them but I mostly did NOT like them, and stuck with the books. Anyway, the first Dwarf in order of appearance here seems to be inspired by Gimli, which gives some credit to the LotR origin of the song. I checked my copy of the book and found the song easily. I think Geoff did a WONDERFUL job with this song, and with the other from the Middle Earth's world. And, as a HUGE Tolkien fan, I'd prefer to have HIS versions over the ones in the movies, big time ❤. Here are the original lyrics from the book: “The world was young, the mountains green, No stain yet on the Moon was seen, No words were laid on stream or stone When Durin woke and walked alone. He named the nameless hills and dells; He drank from yet untasted wells; He stooped and looked in Mirrormere, And saw a crown of stars appear, As gems upon a silver thread, Above the shadow of his head. The world was fair, the mountains tall, In Elder Days before the fall Of mighty kings in Nargothrond And Gondolin, who now beyond The Western Seas have passed away: The world was fair in Durin’s Day. A king he was on carven throne In many-pillared halls of stone With golden roof and silver floor, And runes of power upon the door. The light of sun and star and moon In shining lamps of crystal hewn Undimmed by cloud or shade of night There shone for ever fair and bright. There hammer on the anvil smote, There chisel clove, and graver wrote; There forged was blade, and bound was hilt; The delver mined, the mason built. There beryl, pearl, and opal pale, And metal wrought like fishes’ mail, Buckler and corslet, axe and sword, And shining spears were laid in hoard. Unwearied then were Durin’s folk; Beneath the mountains music woke: The harpers harped, the minstrels sang, And at the gates the trumpets rang. The world is grey, the mountains old, The forge’s fire is ashen-cold; No harp is wrung, no hammer falls: The darkness dwells in Durin’s halls; The shadow lies upon his tomb In Moria, in Khazad-dûm. But still the sunken stars appear In dark and windless Mirrormere; There lies his crown in water deep, Till Durin wakes again from sleep.” As you can see, the reference to fishes' mail is there already. And I just LOVE that Geoff showed such respect to the original text, and to the mood it conveys, and the context it's sung. This one touched me really deeply. Well, all three did. Tolkien's world does, every time. 🙂 See you next time!

It is, but near the end of the video a rekindling of their relationship was depicted. One thing that is not shown/taught is that relationships isn't just feelings only but a lot of work as well.

It’s a cover of a Vince Gill song. Very pretty and Bastien did it so well. I think they’re giving him a few songs as lead to get his sound under our belt so to speak. Love Home Free and they have a large selection of songs. Let us know what you like and we’ll try to lead you. If you like bass try I Can’t Outrun You, Brothers in Arms, Hillbilly Bone. If you like silly try the Butts Medley, Brother, Country Fried Pop Medley. Some of my favorites, Helplessly Hoping, Skull and Bones, Die a Happy Man, In the Blood, What We Ain’t Got. Like your shirt. Been there once but so long ago.

Many of those songs I have added to my list of songs to react to, just in case the groups I am following don't release a particular week. At this point, I am about 25 weeks behind... LOL

I grew up on classic rock & am a big fan of the Doobie Brothers & had their albums. "Listen To The Music" was a big hit for them back in 1972. Love that Home Free is keeping this great music alive & introducing it to the younger generation. The guys did a really nice job of this song. Austin was great for the lead & loved the background harmonies of Rob, Chance & Tim's bass. Adam killed it on the vocal percussion again. He always comes up with some new & interesting sounds.

Being born into the very beginning of Gen X (70) I grew up with amazing music, across many styles. I love when newfound love for music from yesteryear comes into play. Will continue to dig into the HF archive!

Thanks for your reaction. Another beautiful song by Home Free. Nice that they featured Adam Bastien again on lead vocals for this country song. The background harmonies were great along with Adam's beatboxing. Also love the very touching video that went along with the song. Our lives are so busy these days but we need to connect with those we love in small special ways.

Love this! Great reaction ES! Austin is the lead tenor on this one. He left the band recently and another Adam joined. Beatboxer is Adam Rupp…he’s amazing! Adam Chance (we call him Chance) is the baritone bass and wore the baseball cap. Tim Foust is the amazing bass and if you go on his channel he has lots of doo wop songs. Rob (glasses) is the tenor who can also sing opera. Austin was the high tenor of the group and has a great voice but left the band for personal reasons. Adam Bastien (pronounced bass-teen) is a great singer also and replaced Austin. He sang with HF before they went on the Sing Off and was also a part of 7th Ave. I think he’ll do fine. Try One Man Band, Helplessly Hoping, I Can’t Outrun You, Yours, Die a Happy Man to hear more great harmonies.
