Who woke the DRAGON? Smaug ate the bells and spit out this CHRISTMAS FIRE!! Dang this is awesome! What a performance and arrangement. Props to Geoff......
Thanks for this reaction to Geoff's epic Christmas release. I have run out of superlatives! A five octave vocal range is a powerful thing. The thing about Geoff's range is that he has three of his five octaves in full chest voice. I enjoy the way Geoff arranges music nearly as much as his vocals. Judging by his album art, the Geoffquakes did some damage! The community aspect of sharing the love for VoicePlay's and Geoff's solo music is something wonderful. Living in a time where so much positive energy is at our fingertips through the internet is a blessing.
I totally agree with you @vdoyne. You, I and about 95% of the people out there of mainstream news and media glorifying negativity has gotten really old. Music truly is the way to heal.
Thank you for the complement. I feel if 100 people would hear a song, all of them could like it, but for 100 different reasons in what they observed. I am happy to share my perspective with you @Aurora-cv5to
This song is EPIC and it brought out the conductor in many reactors 😅❤ Geoff's covers are always so well arranged, his voice is superbe (like always), but the instrumentals in this one were really next level 🤩 The "middle Geoff" had a way to stare down the camera, like he was right before going into battle... I felt a little scared and intimidated 😮 I'm not much into all the normal cheesy Christmas songs, but this one... good Lord... I'm listening to it on repeat since it dropped (literally 😂) last Friday 👍🏻 Thank you for your reaction 🫶🏻
From what other commenters have stated, this song originates from the country of Ukraine. It fits for sure. It is such a solid work of musical art. I am so happy he released it.
Yet another Christmas song I really didn't care for. Geoff's arrangement has me loving it. The other is one he arranged a couple years ago God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen went straight to my Christmas playlist. This one also made it.
I can appreciate your perspective! I have to say I love when music sooths the soul of other. It's why I started reacting. Music is true power in every sense.
Thank you for the enjoyable and entertaining reaction! I love that you clearly had a blast, and I'm happy that you're motivated to keep practicing. You also brought up some observations I haven't seen anyone else make yet. The audio interpretation of a bell swinging back and forth? So clever! - And I absolutely wouldn't put it past Geoff to have exactly that in mind when arranging. While his stunning voice captivated me initially, by now I'm just as amazed by Geoff's skills as an arranger. That combination of thoughtfulness in intent and depth of understanding of what makes the original great, coupled with his unique style and creative daring is a rare delight. (Layne Stein from VoicePlay is an equally gifted and masterful arranger in his own right, and they complement each other so well. EDIT: Also full credit where due to Eli. I haven't seen enough of his arrangements to get a clear picture of his style, but he surely is a creative force to be reckoned with as well.) I can only imagine how much skill and hard work it takes to be able to do what Geoff does and make it sound - and look - so effortless. Powerful *and* graceful.
I totally believe it is his skill and interpretations of the music he does that makes me keep wanting more. He is truly using his talents to the maximum level and then going Super Sayin and pushes well beyond the 'limits' each time. His art and craft keep getting honed and fine-tuned. I can't even imagine what a powerhouse he will be in a year... five...
Geoff always does great arrangements, but this went to a whole new level. I had never imagined this approach to a carol - ominous, kind of threatening even - and he pulls it off brilliantly. This could be on the soundtrack of a war movie set at Christmas time. Someone please make that movie, lol.
I've been looking forward to your reaction to this and you didn't disappoint me! I have listened to this song countless times since he dropped it on Patreon. It is now my favorite of Geoff's arrangements. I'm not sure if you're aware that this song originated in the Ukraine. Geoff gives a bit of the history of the song in his video description. The national colors of the Ukraine are yellow & blue and next time you watch this notice Geoff is wearing those colors and there are subtle tones of them in the background & lighting. Also, to me, the album art looks very much like bells in a war zone. I don't know if this is Geoff & Kathy's nod of support to the Ukraine or just a nod to the heritage of the song but either way I think it's wonderful that they did this. As of my writing this, Geoff's channel is showing 635K views for this and it came out only 9 days ago. Extremely impressive for any video but especially a "Christmas" specific song and boy does he deserve those views for this masterpiece. Oh, and BTW, I loved your squirrel comment at the beginning. That has become a running joke between my hubby & myself when it comes to me gaming and always going off on side quests, LOL! Happy Holidays to you & your family.
I see the nods to Ukraine as well. In fact I sent a link to several of the people I follow who report on the war. I especially like the part Echon commented upon where Geoff is singing in his higher register. It floats almost as if over the landscape of a short ceasefire only to go back to the ringing warning of heavy cathedral bells.
FINALLY someone else noticed the nods to the ukrainian origin of this carol! Another reactor asked what kind of xmas is celebrated here and imho it is the christmas of a country at war, defending itself against a superior foe invading
@@EnsembleStantePede I'm glad I'm not the only one . I read another comment on another reaction where someone mentioned the Ukrainian color scheme, etc. and someone else replied saying they didn't think that was what Geoff intended because he's never been political. I personally don't feel that showing support for people living through horrific times is political, it's compassionate.
Thunder of the Bells! The really deep notes that Geoff hits while he's doing the chorus with the camera shakes are G1, Eb1, F1, D1 - all subharmonics. Apparently his lowest full chest note in this is a G1, which isn't anything new for Geoff - he's been able to hit that note for quite a while. Speaking of notes "only elephants can hear" - there IS a vocalist who can hit those notes, apparently. Tim Storms has the record for the lowest notes/tones produced by a human voice - about an octave and a half below a piano keyboard, well into infrasound range. The tones are so low that the basically nobody would be able to hear anything at all, and you'd need special mics to be able to pick those up - regular audio mics wouldn't even come close to having the dynamic range to hear them.
Ok, that is crazy amazing! I can hit G1, but I have not learned the technique for subharmonics as of yet. So I hit the proverbial glass floor. LOL. I very much appreciate everything Geoff does, especially when he brings out the clones. There is a place an purpose for everything and the sound that comes with is amazing!
haha, fun fact you may not know, there already is a bass singer who sings in the negative octaves. his name is Tim Storms and he holds the Guinness World Record for both the "lowest note produced by a human" and the "widest vocal range". his lowest produced sound is in the -7th octave, that's negative 7 octaves, at 0.189 Hz. which ofc can't be heard by humans, so it doesn't work for music 😅😅 if you go lower than what Geoff currently does, it stops being music and just becomes a frequency, so it just wouldnt sound good in a song 😄
So true, but if you need to have a water in a glass shake for the Jurassic Park 89 just hand Tim or Geoff a mike. LOL. Thanks for broadening my world even more. All I can say that is amazing, crazy and super cool all in one @huldradraco. Makes me wonder if he did that in a car, it would blow out the windows... just sayin!
@@ESClone27 well... Geoff has said he doesn't sing bass while driving, because the resonance of his voice vibrate his eyeballs so much it makes his vision go blurry 😂
There have been many great comments about this cover, but one of my faves goes something along the lines of: a piano listened to this and the left hand keys asked “what note is THAT?😂😂😂😂
This such an epic version of this carol. Like you've never heard it before. His lowest in this one is D1 so still has a few piano keys to work towards.
Agreed. You never know what to expect from Geoff. Which direction he will pick. I stopped trying to guess because I usually miss the mark by that much!

If this were a baseball game, the only thing left of the ball would be the busted leather cover of the ball. What an amazing arrangement!
What a MASTERPIECE!!!!!! Besides his voice, that arrangement!!!! Hells bells indeed! I had the same feelings . . . about thirty times now!!!!
Ha, ha, ha! Well said! If I can only get this song stuck in my head, all will be well!
wow, I'd completely missed the rhythmic swaying of the bell in the audio - great point, thanks.
