Serious question, what’s wrong with liking Tom McDonald?

the main thing is that indie has divided into three different meanings actual indie - any music that is not produced by a company, literally tells you nothing about a persons taste indie as a genera - music more in the vein of cavetown or mxmtoon, its good music but much easier to just explain the artist you listen to so it doesnt confuse indie as a "genera" - stuff like nirvana, the more popular artist that are 100% with a label but was at one time was actually indie, and now is just holding onto it

I feel like hyperpop was never really a genre in the first place and more like a placeholder to experiment and for people to develop other genres from it. Now we got Scenecore for example which very clearly has Hyperpop influence

Please please please listen to Pop_X, an italian "band" that has been doing 'hyperpop' for 20 years and just came out with a great album. It's very experimental but it's crazy. First few tracks to get a feel are 'io centro con i missili', 'drogata schifosa', 'the war is over internet' and from the new album i recommend 'fichi secchi'. If you want more obscure/hard stuff search for 'wurm speed' or 'losing at the casino'
