Warning! The dark side of HomeExchange! One week before my arrival date, my host cancelled my reservation for no valid reason. I had purposely booked something within the city limits of Stockholm, because all my engagements were in the city limits. HomeExchange then sent out inquiries (after I had written to them 5 times) to other properties around Stockholm and got 1 possible answer. The only problem was that this property was over 30 km (19 miles) outside of the city limits, where I would have to travel by public transportation more than 1 hour to get there. I would also have to travel through some very unsafe neighborhoods to arrive at this location. Travelling through these neighborhoods at night is very unsafe, especially if you are a single woman, so naturally I could not accept this arrangement. HomeExchange then informed me that they had offered me a place and I did not accept, and therefore they were not going to reimburse me for hotel expenses. This is the truth and people need to know the truth. HomeExchange hides behind their corporate fine print, saying they have the right to find another exchange location that is within 50 km (31 miles) from the original reservation. It is all fine and dandy until your host cancels, then you are on your own, this the dark side of HomeExchange. I had been a loyal member of HomeExchange for at least 5 years, where I have paid my membership fees on time and had done several successful exchanges, but I am now going to cancel my membership. I have not been treated well.

If you tried to coast in 1929, 1965, or 2000, you'd be in for a long and rough road if you were expecting compounding to do the lifting for you. This obviously applies to traditional FIRE too, but the difference is that with traditional, you've already built up a large nest egg. I love CoastFI, but I think there are two important things: 1. I'd get to at least 50% of my goal first. I don't see how coasting on 300k at 30 years old would be a prudent thing for instance. 2. I'd probably stay in my field of expertise at least for some time. Work less hours, do contracts for part of the year, etc. I think people underestimate how much a lot of these low paying Barista jobs can actually suck after a while. Be cautious and careful and don't try to take shortcuts.

When rates are this low it makes no sense to pay it off early. You are robbing your future self from real wealth. Ive just licked in for five years at 1.34% and can get close to 10% in investments. Would be crazy to overpay! As you say its psychological. Bit its a very expensive comfort blanket.

Your assuming 2% mortgage and assuming 10% s&p returns. Study history. Debt is definite investment is speculation. Assume 4% mortgage low rates won't be forever! Why you think they have 2-5 year fixed rate. They are waiting to put those rates up. The s&p is propped up by a small hand full of companies. We're going to have a big slow down over the next 2 years. Higher interest rates and lower returns.

Great video. But if we are to take into account inflation over that period, £25,000 would suddenly not be so easy to live off. It would be interesting to see what the coast fi numbers would be to have the equivalent of £25,000 in these periods of time assuming 2% inflation
