Retro'ish flight sim/space sim gamer with an interest in getting these old classics running as well as possible on modern hardware!
Harrier Jump Jet (MicroProse 1992)
Seem to be going through a bit of a Harrier period! This is Harrier Jump Jet, the Harrier sim from MicroProse in 1992 (weirdly the same year as AV-9B Harrier Assault). It was developed by the UK team rather than US developers. One of the lesser known and often overlooked MicroProse sims.
So here it is, it's a training mission so no damage from the one fighter I miss and because I haven't read the manual properly yet it was an autopilot landing.
Otherwise a couple of strikes on a SAM radar and SAM site in the Hong Kong theater. With the mountainous terrain this sim really does lend itself to some NOE flying!
Some technical bits, I have the gog release but that is v2.16. This is v2.41 so full ...

A quick video showing off AV-8B Harrier Assault in DOSBox Staging. Carrying out the first mission of the Saber battle plan, a attack on an enemy camp at Tutuala and on the way home the remaining enemy structure at Jaco is hit. Just end up using the Hydra rockets. Landing with autopilot as I don't know how yet and this is just a demo video! Setup guide at the usual website here: www.tales-from-d...

Quick run through the first arcade level of TFX by Digital Image Design, the developers of F29 Retaliator, EF2000 and F22/TAW. You have infinite weapons on the arcade mode so it's a bit of a missile-fest. Managed to destroy enough of the oil refinery to complete the level. I have the joystick sensitivity all the way up to max, which may or may not be a good idea! Setup guide here: www.tales-fro...

Chuck Yeager's Air Combat (Mac version & Qemu multi-monitor madness)
Просмотров 13321 день назад
A quick test flight in the P-51 Mustang, nothing too special about that, except it's the Mac version which supported a large number of monitors. I'm using the latest experimental build of Qemu (from Emaculation) to emulate 4 monitors for quite an interesting sim experience. For some reason the default resolution used by the Qemu frame buffer displays, (640x480x8) isn't working and I ended up us...
F29 Retaliator (Successful landing!)

Just to prove to myself it could be done I tried to land in F29 Retaliator and managed it! F29 Retaliator was created by the folks at Digital Image Design (DID) who would go on to create such classics as TFX, EF2000 and F22 Total Air War! At the time the crisp visuals and silky smooth frame rate was amazing. But landings, they were something to be feared! Incredibly tricky and usually resulting...

Firstly a huge thank you to Cat for his work on this new experimental build of Qemu. The Win key is now being correctly handled by Qemu as a modifier and doesn't get sent to windows as well, so an excellent result there. So this is just a quick test, fire some HARM's, drop some Mk83HD's and make a landing. Not in the correct aspect ratio (it was on my monitor) as Geforce was just recording the ...

Head back to base and encounter an unfriendly Mirage 3. Takes a couple of missiles as I don't want to launch at max range and as it gets closer the aspect isn't great. Probably leave it too long. F-117A Nighthawk Stealth Fighter 2.0 (Mac version, tech refresh 2025 testing SheepShaver)
Просмотров 118Месяц назад
The latest version of SheepShaver has markedly increased compatibility with F-117A (Mac version). Incredibly close to being ideal, if playable it would supplant MAME as the preferred emulator. However the digital speech still causes the emulator to freeze and crash. So for now, MAME remains the recommended (and only) way to play this sim.

This is the first Red Flag review mission, takeoff, do a circuit then bring it in for a landing. First approach is over the runway followed by a downwind leg, then a turn for finals and landing. The first attempt went a little weird in that it started with the aircraft miles away from the runway in the middle of nowhere, very odd?!?

Subwar 2050 (North Atlantic Campaign - Mission 3 - Das Boot)
Game was disliked by aviation purists for obvious reasons (F-15 on aircraft carrier) 😁. But it did have decent polygonal graphics for the period, real 3D . 386DX would be required for real smooth gameplay, but id did run even on 286 .
IMHO I think this was MicroProse's 'sim lite' offering at the time, with F-19 been a bit more of a heavier weight sim. I think it helps if you find your 'level' and adjust the difficulty accordingly otherwise it becomes a bit of an arcade flight shooter. But it would probably run well on the hardware of the time! 👍
@@darkenedroom Funny thing, F-19 does not exist in real life but was more serious sim 😁
@@aleksazunjic9672 F-19 s a great sim, a bit speed sensitive and some weapons are way too iffy, but they fixed all that with F-117. I have a very long playthrough of it, nearly all 99 missions! It looks like they listened to criticism and went very serious for the sequel, F-15 Strike Eagle III
More commentary would be nice eg tell us what u are doing etc
This is an interesting game. I purchased it from GOG some time ago, but I have a long list of MS DOS games to play, and I play them slowly, reading their manuals and playing a lot of hours. Thanks for the video!
The gog and Steam releases are a bit problematic, they are the older v2.16 version and there's a couple of patches to take it to v2.41 with throttle, rudder support and other changes. Added a msg on the gog harrier jump jet foorum and @Damsonn added a Steam guide a while ago. This video is using the v2.41 version.
@@darkenedroom Done thanks! However, how does throttle work? I set in dosbox joysticktype = fcs, then I exit setup and I select Yes to all questions about controls (if I want to use the joystick, if I have a thrustmaster, and if I have a Weapon Control System), and then I calibrate the joystick. Once I'm in the game I enable rudder and throttle, and rudder works, but throttle doesn't. I tried this with an old Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and an Xbox One controller. I had no luck with any! The throttle doesn't move at all
@@OnlyEarlyAccessGames IIRC DOSBox considers fcs a 3 axis device. When testing I was using a 4axis controller type and I selected no for the Thrustmaster questions. When you first enable throttle and rudders them there may be some spurious inputs, so move the throttle and rudder and they should settle down. Not sure how many axes your controller has, for my hotas I have >4. So I used the my default DOSBox axes mappings to limit to 4. So DX_X_AXIS, DX_Y_AXIS, DX_Z_AXIS (throttle) and DX_XROT_AXIS (rudder). HJJ really doesn't like timed = false for my hotas so I had to use timed = true and I had to set swap34 to true, but that is probably controller specific so you'll have to test with your controller to confirm what settings you'll need for your controllers. Hope that helps 👍
@@darkenedroom It works perfectly now, thank you! I used 4axis and responded 'no' when asked if I have a Thrustmaster. However, it is a bit difficult to set the throttle exactly in the middle (50%) when you activate it, and you always lose a bit of useful range. The Harrier's throttle might not reach the maximum, for example. But it is a minor issue, and nothing can be done about it, except enabling the throttle again in the cockpit menu and repeat. Thanks again :)
I had the ww1 biplane, in a dive that’s too fast wings would fall off and a jet game very similar to this
Maybe Red Baron, or Wings of Glory? Dawn Patrol could be another contender?
My first FS game
Picked a good one, very fluid flying for the hardware at the time! 👍
my husband loved a game called fleet defender he pulled out his old 486 and showd me it was quite fun and a little like this
Ah yes, fleet defender, I have that, it was another sim from the same company MicroProse.
@ you have to admit it was quite fun old games are fun
@ they definitely are! 👍
Seems so weird the keyboard in the emulator triggers that.
In the latest experimental build from Emaculation, this behaviour was fixed with an upstream Qemu patch and it now works as a modifier key as intended 👍
The music on this game was out of this world. Simply beautiful.
It still is, definitely one of the better sim soundtracks and it was cd music so you could play it as a music cd. Bit of a shame the budget release lacked the cd music. 😞
One of the best early flight sims that has a dynamic campaign, you can even control the ground assault from the carrier, and land infantry by amtrac and spec ops to land in helicopters to lase targets for your mavericks. Its a great game. One tip, always go after the enemy C130's that come into untaken airbases, until you take them over. If you dont they will land supplies for the enemy. One weird thing though is sidewinders would not lock on the c130 for me. I always had to kill them with the cannon.
I think I read that somewhere about the C130's and Sidewinders, not sure if in the manual or some hints I found somewhere. I'm guessing no jet exhaust and the turboprops might not generate enough heat for Sidewinders so guns it has to be! The manual does say if you're a strategy type, you might want to initially skip the sim and just run the battle plan and if you're a sim person, just do the computer suggested missions, although the chances of success are limited if you do either! Then later on, try the other aspect of the game. I think it deserves a bit more recognition especially the first VGA version which I think has a MicroProse sim kind of feel to it. I think the SVGA version tends to overshadow it a bit.
@@darkenedroom Didn't the first and 2nd game have the same content, but svga just added better graphics? The 3do version looked great with details in the graphics (flying nightmares) but the problem with that version was that they removed the campaign from it.
@@witchywoman165 yep absolutely correct. The Mac version released a couple of years later (94 I think) was also called Flying Nightmares, that had the campaign but used similar SVGA graphics as the PC, didn't have the 3DO textures, so another Mac version to investigate in the future! Removing half the game in the 3DO version seems a bit extreme!
Thanks for the info about the DosBox setup. It's very usable. 👍
Hope it helps!
@@darkenedroom Thanks.
Wow
Can do some interesting things with Mac emulation! 👍
An old classic. Awesome! 😀
It really is, often overlooked for the SVGA version, and a comprehensive dynamic campaign going on! Quite impressive for 1992!
I dont have any sevices as Steam or GOG etc.. Can I just add emulated games to Playnite only from a folders on my PC ?
Yup you can add games manually although I have tweaked my setup so DOSBox-X and DOSBox Staging are considered different emulators by Playnite, I should write something about that.
@@darkenedroom Tnx, I tried to install manually but without success.
@@dovpauzner5093ah I probably wasn't clear, get dosbox staging up and configured, install the game itself in dosbox staging. Should be able to run it in dosbox staging as usual. Playnite is just a game launcher that I tweaked to run dosbox staging as a separate emulator. Might work if you try and add it manually as a dosbox game,, but not 100% sure.
And I thought I was the only one obsessed with flight simulators - now I feel much better :)
I've only scratched the surface so far! 🤣
@@darkenedroom Keep up the good work for yourself and for our enjoyment :)
Great old game. I spent many hours playing it back in the day.
what audio are you using?
MIdi is set to mt32 with an mt32_new model used in DOSBox config. Digital audio is set to a Soundblaster Pro 1 in the config, rest of the Soundblaster settings remain as default.
Nice GUI, nice work.
What is that Launcher/GUI for starting the game you are using there?
Hi, that is Playnite, a generic game launcher, so has Steam/GOG/DOSBox integration and I've tweaked it to include DOSBox Staging/DOSBox-X integration. It's running in full screen mode in the video. playnite.link/ 👍
@@darkenedroom Awesome thank you! Also appreciate your Blog showing how to set up DOSBox correctly 👍👍👍👍 Great stuff, Cheers!

how does it work QEMU? is it easy or a pain in the ass
Yes it's running under the latest Qemu m68k experimental build from Emaculation. A complete Mac Quadra 800 virtual Mac needs to be built and then CYAC installed. I already had the virtual Mac built with CYAC installed so I only had to configure the Qemu experimental build which was fairly straight-forward if you're familiar with Qemu. Didn't take too long trying out screen resolutions and so on.
@@darkenedroom Is there a place where we can download a complete package?
@@camberiu no there isn't, this was just me, playing around and trying stuff out. The experimental emulation build is available from Emaculation, but then you have to build the virtual Mac and install CYAC and then configure Qemu for multi-monitor support.
@@darkenedroom With PCEM you can download preinstalled setups is there anything similar for Mac emulation?
@@Gabriele-bu7ri Not really, you may be able to find some prebuilt disk images for SheepShaver but Qemu seems to be more oriented towards enterprise level emulation/virtualization on a linux platform. I can't say I've seen many/any other videos of Qemu being used for gaming?
Nice!👍
It's pretty cool what you can do with Mac emulation these days! 😀
Good luck to all with the project.
I've played a couple of campaigns with an earlier experimental build and this later up-to-date build is pretty solid as well! 👍
my poor ears
Sfx reminds me of ace of aces C64 😂
lol, a little bit smoother than ace of aces and no landing in that c64 game! Just found out there is a precision control button for F29, that would probably have made it easier! 🤣
Each row of ribbons show the reverse of regulation order, but that is not the last time MicroProse makes such a technical military error. As the official handbook says, an addition of the lower tier of medal requires a cumulative multiplying of the original score requirement. In theory a 2nd CMOH is possible with 2400 points but that is a fantastical moonshot (besides: no one since WWI has earned two MOHs, and those earned in that war were from two different service branches for the same acts). Then again, that there appears to be a hardcoded limit of 9 AMs and 5 DFCs suggests you got everything technically possible.
Ah I hadn't noticed that, they are supposed to be displayed highest to lowest? Yes, 2400 seems to be just outside of what is possible but I think you're right, a single CMOH is probably hardcoded but I hadn't realised the AM or DFC might be hardcoded as well, good spot! 👍
I never owned a Mac, though I've played my fair share of Mac games over the decades thanks to computer class at school and playing at friends' houses. I remember being particularly impressed at how crisp and smooth the visuals were for flight sims like Hornet 2.0 compared to the older ones I regularly played on the family 486 PC.
The Mac was probably running at 512x384 or 640x480 which was a higher resolution than many of 320x200 dos games at the time. It wasn't until the advent of SVGA and higher supported resolutions that dos/win began to exceed Mac visuals.
One of the best and realistic old flight sim.
Having a blast just in Red Flag!
Redz Box😮
The Marine 😮
Voice! Only for takeoff, but now we know what set the foundation F-15 II and F-117A built upon.
It come as a bit of a surprise when I tried it! 😀
You have a copy of F-19 Stealth Air Combat, the alternative guide under the Silicon Valley publishing label? It was written by Pete Bonanni, a real USAF pilot who emphasizes how several of the available air-to-ground weapons are fantastical (he uses the term "notional") for the stealth fighter albeit based on real designs. The real F-117 specializes in precision guided bombs and comes stock with a laser designator married to the Paveway system, but such guidance packages could conceivably end up in short supply during wartime. Missiles require target designation systems the F-117 does not have, but could theoretically be used in collaboration with other forces (air or ground) marking those designations. The more conventional the weapon, the greater the challenge [and fun] in successfully delivering it on target in this sim.
I didn't know it existed but found a copy and I think it'll definitely be something to read. The problem with F-19 is it's speed sensitivity and the effect on weapon accuracy, which meant the paveways were always missing so it was easier with slicks or sticking with Mavericks. If you want a 'manual' sim I'd recommend A-10 Attack!, it is very very manual and a lot of fun!
It's not so much the weapon but the digital audio speech occurring after the primary or secondary is hit, which seems to cause the freeze. ☹
oh MAME oh MAME oh MAME MAME blue ... Can I ever forgot the SAM Radar in Tripoli. 🙂Please, keep up your research . Season greetings !
lol, the Tripoli SAM site, I know it well :)
this game even got upgraded/rereleased for Windows in a form of F/A-18 Hornet 3.0 (1997), F/A-18 Korea+3Dfx support (1998), F/A-18 Precision Strike Fighter (2001) and F/A-18 Operation Desert Storm/Iraqi Freedom(2003) maintaining the same control scheme and gameplay, all of them work flawlessly in win10/11 too
I do have them and at some point I should get around to installing them and maybe adding a setup guide if needed but I thought I would start at the beginning with the Mac exclusive originals and go on from there. I do like the sim part of the games, it's just a pity they never got dynamic campaigns. I think this is maybe why the later entries in the series were never as popular as some of their competition?
@@darkenedroom agreed, the sim part is great, dynamic campaign was big thing back then, only until F-18 OIF dev decided to add a mission editor offers few replayability..but meehhh
When the Mac first came out, it was too expensive for me. But now, thanks to your blog, I can partially make up for the lost pleasure.
And setup guides as well if you ever decided to give it a try!
Very nice sharp graphics and clear audio. Good vid.
Thankyou, the GeForce recording software does a decent job and it's taken a fair bit of testing, but I worked out how to run it well under Win10 with emulation.
Very nice sharp graphics and clear audio. Good vid.
Can you make a guide:)
What are the differences with other version of f-117
Well it runs in 640x480 SVGA as opposed to the 320x200 VGA DOS version. It's plays rather similarly, well it does with my plugin, as flying with the mouse is a grim experience. But it's an absolute pain to get running under emulation and you have to use the rather involved process of setting up a Mac in MAME. DOSBox is a lot easier. SheepShaver would have simplified things and it runs more smoothly in SheepShaver were it not for the freezing and crashing. It was released a couple of years after the DOS version so it could be considered the final definitive version.
I loved this game back then 🥰
It's still such a blast!
One way ticket mission done 😉 What is more important - its work on win10 smoothly. Well done !
Thankyou, very kind of you to say.
Did you try Alt+Enter for a full screen ?
Yes, DOSBox Staging was full screen before it Falcon started, probably just a strange little quirk of the sim, was fine once I reloaded the review and tried again!
DOSBox game management - that's exactly what I need. Subscribed with huge like !
Glad it was helpful for you, thought it might be useful as I used to have DOSBox games scattered all over the disk! 👍

Glad this worked out for you, happy to help! 👍
A classic! 😀
Absolutely and there was such a huge, well deserved community around it! 👍
so similar to Tornado graphics... but never bumped across this one... thx!

I was leaning towards acquiring a copy of the Amiga port: sharper audio (even to 1.5 Roland) but choppy framerate with colors falling somewhere between EGA and VGA quality. Any experience with that one?
Not with the Amiga version, but had a look at some Amiga emulation. Are you thinking of running in legacy hardware or ripping the media and using emulation (or both). With emulation it can run at A1200 rather than A500 speeds so choppy framerate is not so choppy! In fact with the horrible joystick deadzone on the PC version, I'm wondering what the Amiga version might be like in WinUAE?
@@darkenedroom Depends on what the A500 Mini counts as.
@@BaronSFel001 Tricky, I seen various posts saying it runs faster and there's a bit of a manual hack to use a usb and pc to change settings. MIght be worth giving it a whirl in WinUAE first, if possible?
Staging gives the most authentic CRT experience.
And very much ready to go 'out of the box', you can often just leave the default render settings as is for a good 'crt like' experience. I didn't change them in this video.
i've the original 5 1/4 floppy disk version!!!...
As I was doing research for the website articles I grabbed some pix of the media I think it was 1991 - 5.25 disks and by 1995 - cd rom! And I think OFT was definitely released on 5.25 disks, not sure about MiG or Hornet though?
