The Rise and Fall of The Miracle Mets (1962-1973)
Просмотров 3712 месяца назад
The first 11 years of the New York Mets existence saw a historic rise and fall unseen in sports history. They went from the worst team ever to a World Series champion in 7 years. 4 years after that, the team had the most unlikely midseason comeback in MLB history. Along the way baseball legends Casey Stengel, Gil Hodges, Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, Willie Mays and Yogi Berra passed through the wall...

    Despite the fact that MLB continues to enjoy "success", the Steroids Era and how players, management, and fans responded to it IS a great stain on the Old National Pastime.

    All stat for these "players" should have a steroid symbol next to their names. What a travesty would it be to have the new generation of baseball players growing up thinking Bonds passed Aaron on home runs.

    Oh wow! I was under the impression that the A's dominated the 70s but I guess they just dominated the early seventies.. I did not expect them to hate the owner so badly although they had very good reason to hate him since he was being so cheap. That's really sad that the a seem to have like this history of cheap owners. Of course I'd say things were different during the 1980s especially when they won the world series in 1989 because believe it or not the Oakland A's in 1989 had the highest payroll in the mlb. Over the last 20 years or so they've basically been in the bottom three payrolls

      Walter Haas owned the A’s in the 1980’s, he really loved the team. He made the A’s a juggernaut, they would outsell the Yankees. Haas would pass away in the mid 1990’s

    • @Sly88Frye
      @Sly88Frye 10 дней назад

      @@sdeepj if only they held on to ownership like that. Maybe the A's would have found a way to stay in Oakland because of continued success and continuing to keep their best players. Maybe they would have found a way despite the promise the city of Oakland has.

    This is why ya GOTTA give respect to the pitchers of this era who were good and to players like... say Ken Griffey Jr, who never did PED's. Those players were against all odds with the situation and look what some of them did. Those are the real stars of this ERA imho. When Davis Ortiz got in and some of the other "users" of PEDs, at that point... just let them all in. Call it a day. These guys required talent to do what they did, did the PEDs help hit the ball farther ? Who the hell knows. But its not like PED's made these guys go from shitty players to magic. All of these players had raw talent to start with. (Or most of them lets put it that way.). But we cannot pretend that this type of stuff wasnt happening during era's of other players who got in the Hall. You really think no one was using drugs in the 50s-70's? C'mon 60s was LSD, Weed, Speed galore, a pitcher we all know wrote a book about his perfect game on LSD in the 70s. The 70s had disco disco, ya dont think some of the players were doing Coke back in the 70s? C'mon. Qualudes anyone? What we define as "performance enhancing"... Its almost like Robin Williams stand up when he talks about how a Olympic athlete in track was stripped of their gold medal for testing positive for Weed. Robin said "Maybe if theres a 6ft Hershey bar at the end of the run, then and only then is WEED a performance enhancing drug". There is a double standard at work here.

    This is not the whole story, and is a little misleading. There was never a clear rule against using steroids, just an innocuous memo, and no testing program. Tom House, the highly respected MLB and college pitching coach, said that players were using steroids from at least the 60s. They didn't call them steroids then, but they were really powerful things that were designed for use by horses. In the 70s, MANY players, including Hank Aaron, who admitted it, took illegal "Greenies" (amphetamines). Canseco said that 80% of players took steroids. A certain Mets pitcher said it was 90%. So batters using steroids weren't cheating, they were keeping up with the pitchers who were all using them. Tommy John was told by the Yankees, in the late 80s, after having a pretty good year in his mid-40s, that he would have to gain 30 pounds of muscle OVER THE WINTER if he wanted to stay with the team. The owners knew it, and demanded it. But they were using steroids in EVERY sport, especially the Olympics....from the 70s, at least. If there is no testing program, it's not cheating! The truth is, they are STILL using steroids...in every sport. There is a list of banned drugs, but pharmacists are able to create new drugs faster than the banning programs can ban them. So the top players who can afford the best scientists, get the best drugs. Lenny Dykstra said that he just looked up a doctor in the phone book in the early 90s, and asked for something that would help him keep up his endurance....and he was given steroids. So it's all nonsense......why the big deal in MLB, and not other sports? Because Congress wanted a distraction from the war crimes that were being committed in Iraq....and the steroid hearings by Congress were on tv every day, and were very dramatic. STEROIDS WERE NOT THE MAIN REASON FOR THE INCREASE IN HOME RUNS! In the five years after they started testing, the total number of home runs hit REMAINED THE SAME! The truth is, a juiced ball was introduced in the early to mid 90s. Everybody started hitting homers, even little infielder were hitting opposite field homers on inside out swings! Everybody's HR number soared. BTW, they stopped testing for steroids a few years ago, so what do you think is happening now?

    As a mets fan dont lump all the crackheads on the team in 86 in the same boat. although many of them had substance abuse issues . Not all of them did . Gary carter barley even drink alcohol let alone crack or steroids . And dont throw shade at the big hurt . He was always against it and he was always gigantic and his body broke down like a normal human .... F the steroid guys . I dont care that they destroy their bodies because its their body . But not all steroid users was barry bonds or clemens . The hundreds of guys battling to make a roster spot who did it clean lost jobs to dirtbags who were cheating . And bonds was the face because he was a dick to fans and he was breaking the records . So it wasnt hard to dislike the guy . Screw Bud /owners/ coaches and players who watched and let it happen ... hank is still the HR king

    Good video. You made an important point how steroids weren't viewed as cheating bc it wasn't enforced in any way. The one issue I had was about Clemens. His body didn't change....nowhere to the degree Bonds or Mac bodies changed. Clemens was just fatter at 38 than he was at 23 like any guy. Also, you made a rather big mistake. Frank Thomas was never suspected of steroids. In fact, he was basically the only person in America complaining about steroids as early as 1995. I think youve confused him with Jeff Bagwell or Mike Piazza.

    It’s a disgrace the Yankees haven’t won a World Series since 2009 but I’m glad it was against the Phillies. I live in the Philly area and the Phillies fans were talking so much shit and so full of themselves like they have a winning tradition or something. Then they encountered the Yankee buzz saw. It was awesome. By the forth of fifth game Cole Hamels said “I can’t wait for this to be over.”
