Hey Nick, thanks for the amazing video! Did you have to walk through any swamp during the trail?
I've heard it can be swampy through Tiltill Valley but when I went I had no problems. Thanks for watching and commenting! Happy hiking!
Are there any campgrounds close to Hetch hetchy? Great hike and vid
Hmm I'm sure there is although I'm not familiar. There is an overnight backpackers camp at the trailhead if you have a permit however.
Are there any campgrounds close to Hetch hetchy?
Hey… girls like hiking and backpacking too. And… great fish… I think non stocked.
They definitely do! I don't think I say they don't in my video, although I say phrases like "lets go guys". I think that to me is an all encompassing term for everyone! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great video. Love how you named the wild flowers along the way.
Thanks, its a fun extra part of the hike getting to look for wildflowers!

This is way better than outdoor boys!
You've out done yourself on this trip !! Great video !! Your filming and editing is getting better and better. One of the sierras finest and most breathtaking loop hikes !! I think I did this one some 28 years ago, and I was remembering campsites and such from your trip. We had a bear with cubs in and around our paradise camp during the night, I didn't sleep well !! A low pressure system came in as we made our way over the pass, causing wind and light snow. Our night at Rae lakes was one of the coldest I ever experienced in the sierras !! Keep the great videos coming !!
@JustinMcKinneyhiker Thank you! I can see why the permit is so sought after in the peak season. Wow! I've been told about bears I'm the area but we didn't see any, sadly. I wonder if 28 years ago it was a little less trafficked. The weather seems like the Sierra up there and just does what it wants. We did not expect rain hahah.
@@NickInNature We had seen the mama bear upstream from our camp, with her two cubs. earlier in the afternoon. We had a camp fire that night, and heard what I can only describe as a baby screaming from hell , from a distance in the black night. It was unnerving to say the least. My buddy shinned his flashlight into the blackness and saw several eyes !!! I believe the screaming was the cub got momentarily separated from mama.
Very nice! That is funny. I was exactly 2 days behind you the entire time. I started on the second. I saw so many waterfalls on that hike. And the gnats were sure Horrible at lower elevations. It’ll be a few weeks before I post my video. 😁
@waterfallmadman Wow! It would've been cool to see you out there! Those gnats were quite wild, haha.
Very nice. I was surprised at how many fish you caught. Love to see it.

Did your tent wet out at all? Mine did when I went around the same time last year
@smellybearc7411 Definitely, I had to wipe the inside of my tent with a microfiber towel and I attempted to dry out my quilt before packing up!
@@NickInNature Ah, it looks like a common problem there since it’s so close to the ocean. I should bring something to wipe the tent down too the next time I go. My tent pretty much rained on the inside within an hour of setting up camp. It was unreal.
Nice video of early season in the Grouse Ridge area! If you would have gone to the top of that ridge, you would have been looking down on Lindsey Lakes. You can actually walk that ridge all the way to Penner Lake, or scramble down a gully to Crooked Lakes.
Mosquitoes csn be TERRIBLE at Jennie Ellis. Boulder creeks flows down from there. Weaver is nice when the snow is deep. No people but must hike in from 180 as Big meadow rd is closed.
@weaverl1797 I assume you watched the Jennie Lakes video not this cache creek video! Thanks for the tips, and fir watching!
Great views! Nice looking trout too. Was that the only one that bit?
@@thomasromines8469 Yup. I only saw maybe 4 signs of fish the whole time until I got that bite. That was all I got.
Jennie Lakes is my favorite place to go. No permit needed, and it’s gorgeous.
It's definitely a nice area and you can't beat it for no permits!
I’m a native of El Dorado County. The Caples burn you mentioned was a prescribed burn, begun in late September 2019, that grew to a wildfire Oct 10-25 when high winds suddenly appeared. The Caldor fire skipped Caples. It’s the only lucky break the Caldor fire of 2021 offered up. Thanks for the vid. Brings back nice memories.
The one and only time I explored that area, I’ve never seen so many snakes in my life there were snakes everywhere they were rock piles that the ranchers piled up a long time ago and I walked around one of the piles there was snakeheads poking out of the rocks everywhere and over probably 10 miles of hiking I saw a snake every five minutes I actually had a snake hiss at me and literally chase me I know that sounds bizarre but it’s what happened I’ve never experienced anything like that before and I have my dog with me it freaked me out I haven’t been back since, Crossing one of the drainage areas that was dry I saw a gopher snake and it’s the biggest gopher snake I’ve ever seen I have video and photos of it, it was over 7 feet long no one believes in you but it really was that big, I don’t know what it is with that place I go somewhere every week and have never seen anything like that
@jonluchessi1643 That is actually wild! Maybe it's time of year? I don't think I've seen much snakes out there. Still an awesome story!
It was totally insane I’ve never experienced anything like that
Thank you for sharing this video. That was one of my favorite hikes. Around 4 or 5 years ago a controlled burn turned uncontrolled and burned that area. Then 2 years ago, the Caldor Fire came thru. I haven't been there since the Caldor Fire. I probably won't go any time soon.
@tgflack It was definitely beat up, I can imagine how absolutely beautiful it was before the fires. I still very much enjoyed the area though! Thanks for watching!
What day were you up there? My girlfriend and I hiked to the peak on July 11th
@michaeloswald3776 I believe the 11th and the 12th of July. Weird, I didn't see anyone, but I was relaxing a lot. Thanks for watching!
@@NickInNature Wow! We saw two tents tucked in near the lake and two people were talking in them. We didn''t want to disturb. Is that you and someone else walking along the water in the timelapse? We probably passed the lake at 2pm and left the area at 4pm. Didn't see another person the whole day
@michaeloswald3776 Sounds like that was me and my friend! Also, I believe it's us in the timelapse.
Beautiful Nick! Great video! I just visited Spaulding myself and made a video...this lake never disappoints

Someone saw your video and they actually started a forest fire because of their campfire in that area in june. Fn clowns posts like this. Stay in the bay!!
@1fen You can't blame me for someone else's stupidity. I don't come from the bay either, man. I do more outdoors than you could dream of. Thanks for pushing engagement on my videos though.
@NickInNature you're right, i should try to work on my vehicle with tweezers. Actual tools are too easy🤪. I bet you do do more outdoors than me. I have a job/career. I've hiked that trail fully covered in snow. Because I used to leave a 12ft boat and motor on the shore in the fall, so I could hike in and fish the lake with it way before boat ramp opens! I drive my SxS with snow tracks with boat in the winter and camp n fish different sierra lakes before anyone. I've caught more trophy trout than everyone you know combined up to 23#s. I've towed my boat into lakes miles through snow to fish lakes. I know the Sierra way longer than you son. You probably drive a suburu and hike with hiking poles😅😅😅😅😅 you ain't shit flatlander😅😅@@NickInNature
Looks stunning!! Hope you achieved a glorious lay state after all of that hiking

real men catch fish with their hands
Are you from the 18th century? WTF fishes like that?! 🤣🤣🤣 They have reels that go on rods now. 😅😅 You should stay in San Francisco. 😅😅
@1fen lol, it's a certain type of fishing called Japanese Tenkara. It's a little too easy to catch a fish with a treble hook and reel, in my opinion.
"I'm m going fishing. But I'm going to make it as hard as possible to catch a fish🤪" brilliant!! 😅😅😅😅@NickInNature
@1fen Chris, not everyone wants to use the easy route. I could catch fish all day using a reel and rod. Everyone does it. It's gets boring, sometimes it's good to try new things. You should give something new a try.
Sad that this is all currently being burned rn
@Truckdriverdivorcee Man, I was unaware that the fire had spread so fast and far. Extremely sad.
I was on a trail similar to the one in the beginning of this video at Sequoia National Forest & a massive brown bear came running down the mountain. It was the trail where it leads to a waterfall. It was the most frightening thing that had happened to me at the time..I was 16. Im 34 now. Thanks 4 showing the trails!
@rhcp9009 Wow, how exciting! That sounds like Tokopah Falls. Thanks for watching and commenting!!!!
As someone that occasionally makes hiking content, I definitely appreciate the extra effort for all the still shots! Dope video man, and that fishing spot around 12 minutes is unreal looking. So pretty!!

@rodoutdoors Yeah, it was an awesome find! Thanks for watching!
Beautiful spot up there !!! Solitude and good fishing. Mr. Marmot was very curious . It was funny seeing him run by your camera . It's been one of the warmest summers up in the sierras, with that huge high pressure dome sitting over the west. I always enjoy your backpacking adventures, thanks for sharing .
@JustinMcKinneyhiker Thanks man your comments always mean a lot. Those marmots definitely took a chunk out of my gopro! Yeah, it's been hot and humid this year, much different than the last!

Culbertson is the one to fish!
@KingdomofCarnage Good tip! You can drive to that one right?
@@NickInNature The road gate is locked so you'd need to get access from PG&E, NID or the Forest Service. I've walked the road with a float tube, and also hiked down from Penner. Amazing the difference in years and seasons!! We did the same hike in June 2023. You captured some amazing views that we had but didn’t capture. The difference in the water flow is amazing between what we did and you did!

what permit would i need to do a one night backpacking trip to this peak?
Just need to snag a permit from the lodgepole permit desk, opens at 7am!
Hey man love the video. If you don't mind me asking, which part of the trail did you start your hike from?
We entered near the town of Washington. Here's a link to the trail through Alltrails: South Yuba Trail on AllTrails www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/south-yuba-trail?p=-1&sh=oon6ne
Great video!
always heard that hetch-hetchy was a good one. thx for proving it
Right on! I'll be heading up there in about 3 weeks so I appreciate this as it gives me an idea of what to expect early June. Any signs of deer or wildlife out there? Also, on your rod were you dry fly fishing or have a nymph on? Thanks in advance!
Which trail in did you recommend?
I used a trail below Fuller Lake, I believe it is actually spaulding lake trail.
