Building a trail Day 2 with Kubota SVL75-3 How many feet per hour can you do? Very dependent on?
Here @ahbuildingafarm we are constantly being reminded we are so ignorant of the ways of the forest and the farm. On day one I only made 50 feet of progress on the log skidding trail. And I filmed a lot of it. Here on day two I decided not to film as much and the next 135 feet went really fast until.... yeah, nothing is easy on the farm, especially if you turn a camera on!!!
The Kubota SVL75-3 with the Land Pride TH35 Tilt Hitch and the 72 inch toothed bucket did a great job. I on the other hand still need to learn so much.... but learn from my mistakes so you don't need to repeat them!!

I need to pile up some soil the reduce the grade. Tough working conditions in the Kubota SLV75-3. I installed inclinometers so I can monitor my pitch left to right, and forward and back. Kubota Skid Steers like all equipment have maintenance schedules. The Kubota SVL75-3 with air-conditioned cab has 7 basic maintenance maintenance steps you can do yourself every 50 hours. This is task #1 - Drain water from fuel tank. The manual doesn't clarify how much to drain. I did about 6 to 8 ounces. If it was really dirty or a lot of water, I'd drain more, maybe even an entire gallon. The...

I am continuing to work on clearing the log skidding trails throughout the farm/forest This area gets very swampy as there is a slow seep of water coming from some place up hill. I wouldn't call it a spring as the flow is probably less than 2 gallons an hour, but it is enough to keep the soil soft so tires or skidsteer tracks sink. There are about 4 or 5 different manufactures. Several also have a hydraulic switch, like a tractor 3rd function. If you were putting a hydraulic pallet fork on the TH35 you would need to find a 3rd party 3rd function kit. Some of the manufactures sell it as an option but Land Pride does not. Land Pride does have an option for a check valve that helps keep the angle set against the pressure of pushing the bucket into the ground. It's a $350.00 option and thus far I haven't noticed that I need it. I am changing the angle so often that I haven't tested to see if it actually drifts off the setting I had it at. I think if you are doing grading it will be helpful for us rookies. Experts, maybe not quite as much, but in tight spaces it's amazing to do grading and stump digging with the bucket. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for watching

      Also, I am told to really get good (perfect?) grading you need a smooth (no teeth) bucket. And if the bottom were longer you could see it from the operators seat which would make grading easier.... I'm not at the point I need perfect or even close to perfect, but maybe in a year when we build our house.

    • @ahbuildingafarm
      @ahbuildingafarm 13 дней назад

      On my version of the manual the Hydraulic Filter is recommended to be changed (but not the hydraulic fluid) after the very first 50 hours, but only that first 50 hours and then every 500 (five Hundred) after that. For my manual that is on page 147 in the table Number 28 of the maintenance schedule Also my dealer told me. And per my own decision I plan on changing the engine oil and the oil filter shortly (probably at 60 hours see page 119 Operation of Machine 1. Running-In Oil Change in the Run-in Stage) as I have heard that recommendation for all new engines, but I have not read that anywhere for Kubota, I will do the oil filter and full oil change just as a precaution.

    Ryobi doesn't make anything for real men :):):) Husqvarna, Jonsered, Stihl, the rest are for hobbies. :):)

    • @ahbuildingafarm
      @ahbuildingafarm 15 дней назад

      In general I would totally agree. We bought Ryobi as a home string trimmer / weed wacker first. Then we needed a new lawn mower after moving and having a much smaller yard realized a new Ryobi mower would be less maintenance. No gas, no oil changes. Same amount of blade sharpening. Then our Toro Electric Corded leaf blower died, and got Ryobi 730mph blower which is AWESOME with no cords!! Then we needed to trim some branches at the new house, well why not get a Ryobi pole saw so I don't need to climb a tree with my gas chainsaw. Then the clutch went on my gas chain saw I bought when I was 18 years old (so 40+ years old) and couldn't get parts. So I got the 18" Ryobi 40v chain saw. No need to mix gas, and worry about the fuel aging out. All the Ryobi equipment we have uses the same type of 40v battery, just in different Amp Hour sizes (2, 4, 5, 8ah) so it just made sense for our use case since we don't use the equipment in a professional business. If I did need to cut 18" logs day in and day out I'd get a Stihl Rancher or similar. And once we are on the farm doing more logging I probably will......but for us currently having the same exact battery in all our equipment is really helpful even though the equipment is not industrial grade. Thanks for commenting, and I think you are correct and spot on!!

  • @dvt3802
    @dvt3802 15 дней назад

    Here we go, It is NOT ur opinion, It really is supposed to be on all equipment that you move a control to the right something goes right. Same for left. Control to left something left. On a 6 way blade (dozer) used to be move (T handle on JD) to left blade tilts to left and twist top of handle to left would be angle left. Newer models & other makes have put buttons in the joystick for certain functions I have to look to see WTH is going on cuz I'm elderly. :) Years ago it used to be, Pull a lever was up, Push the lever was down. Some newer logging equip has changed.

    • @ahbuildingafarm
      @ahbuildingafarm 15 дней назад

      I don't have any other experience on other pieces of heavy equipment. I know on mini excavators you have have the controls work two different ways, and was wondering if I just didn't know how to change the skid steer to different modes? The two modes for excavator controls are typically called ISO mode and SAE mode (also known as CAT mode). ISO mode (International Organization for Standardization): In this mode, the left joystick controls the swing (left and right) and the boom (up and down), while the right joystick controls the stick (in and out) and the bucket (curl and dump). SAE mode (Society of Automotive Engineers) or CAT mode: In this mode, the left joystick controls the swing (left and right) and the stick (in and out), while the right joystick controls the boom (up and down) and the bucket (curl and dump).

      And now that I have used that tilt hitch (I call it a tilt plate a lot) I think for what I am doing it is worth it's weight in gold. I was using it all day cutting / clearing a logging path that was very slanted with zero room to turn around. I was easily able to regrade (change the slope) that a dozer blade would not have been able too since it can't pick up material and move it in the same way a bucket can. Unfortunately I didn't film it, but I have a lot more similar work to do, which I will film. Thanks again for asking questions and commenting.

      I think an operator with skills and experience in an open area that is at least 1.5 to 2x the size of the machine can probably live without it. I am a rookie, and I want the trails to stay narrow (6ft) so this tilt really makes it easy to set the grade. I hope that helps you understand. I hope to show more in upcoming videos. My understanding is the experienced operator gets the grade set under the tracks and then proceeds from there. However that may require to dig perpendicular to the direction you want the trail to be going in. I don't have room to dig sideways. And sometimes to slope needs to quickly shift from the left side being high to the left side being low due to hill changes. I just don't know how else to do it without making the trail 12ft wide or more, or using a tilt hitch. There are other manufactures out there, but I decided to stay with Land Pride. I found mostly bad feedback on most other suppliers. Do your research and come to a decision, but for me the Land Pride seemed like best option for me at this time. Hope this helps you with your work.

    You are looking great for 60s :) you are definitely better on a computer than equipment :) you made me say that. Please idle that thing down and use Ur foot throttle Ur driving me nuts. The only thing you need the throttle control for is if you are running something like a mulcher, or grinder where you need the high RPMs. And yes i operate that same machine & the 95, & Cat 299s & 259s and many others. Fecon type heads, brush hogs, flail mowers etc. 56 years of many types of logging, farming, & specialized large trucks.

      Thanks for the compliment and the throttle advice. That's the kind of new operator advice I need and haven't found thru searches. Up until now I haven't used the floor throttle at all so I will definitely work that into my best practices as I learn. I know I need to learn a lot and don't even know what I don't know. The definition of ignorance. I am very open to all suggestions though and over time, will hopefully reduce the ignorance level although my wife has her doubts..... I have 35+ years of formal computer training and work experience and only hours of equipment experience. I won't likely ever be an expert operator, but I will get better because I will listen to advice. Thanks for commenting, and when you see other improvements don't hesitate to ask. 60's is just a number... I try to eat right, and fortunately my parents gave me good Genes.

    Take the teeth off, they are only good when you need them. This job didn't. Use Ur foot throttle and just give it the fuel you need. Will make all the difference in how smooth the machine works.

    • @ahbuildingafarm
      @ahbuildingafarm 21 день назад

      I will definitely try the foot throttle and look at the teeth. I tend to work on different ground and problems through the course of the day, so I might be working on this stretch for an hour or two, and decide to go push over a tree and rip up the roots all within an hour or two. Once I have the skidding trail all the way through and no trees to push down or dig out a smooth edge will be a good idea. Honestly didn't even know I could operate without the teeth. I had seen other videos where people repaired them, but didn't think I could use it without them. Figured I would need to buy a smooth bucket too. Once we are farther along with the farm I was considering getting a 82" or 84" bucket for reaching over the side of the gulley keeping the tracks on the main trail.... just more to learn and ponder. Thanks for commenting, sharing advice. Have a great day.

      I’m a very new operator so keep my ignorance in mind. I know that if you can get your tracks to the grade you wish to keep moving forward you would not need the tilt. However I am finding with the tight spaces and rolling hills I couldn’t get the grade without making the trail much wider. I really want to keep the skidding trails as narrow as possible to optimize growing forest. I looked at 4 or 5 other tilt plates and for the price this seemed like the best option for my purposes. @@ahbuildingafarm there are lots of choices out there. berlon/titan attachments/skid steer solutions/tmg just depends which features you want. i build my own attachments cause im 1. cheap and 2 my skid steer is an obsolete model that doesnt fit regular attachments. the basic design is so simple it might worth asking a local shop to build you one if you dont weld {you can build a basic plane out of a stick of 2 inch angle iron}. the dirt here is very hard to dig so i tend to rip everything up with an excavator and use the skid steer to smooth things out. titan attachments has a land plane with rippers and comb attachment thats middle of the road priced, i would probably start my search there. they are good for bringing gravel back to the top also.

      I did look into them. They do seem rugged and they have an option for a hydraulic diverter that you could then use your grapple or hydraulic forks. There were no close dealers to me, and I wasn't sure I would use it enough to justify the extra $1,500 I was quoted, plus about $600 for the diverter valve for 3rd function plus shipping. Also I don't think Land Pride actually makes this tilt hitch plate themselves. The manual does reference other skid steers, so I wouldn't be surprised if Land Pride contracted with Bradco to build it for them. My dealer had never sold one in the history of the dealership. Primarily because they are farmer focused, and don't sell as many skid steers to NON-Farmers.

The lowest spot is about 800ft, maybe 750ft. Based on historical Google Maps pictures we believe it was logged in 1980. Sure you can take it to the dealer and have it fixed "free". What's it gonna cost you? A month and a half without your machine, you're better off buying parts and doing things yourself if you can. Lots of people need these things for work and not having this machine for a month can equal to tens of thousands of dollars lost in just that month depending on your type of business. Any interaction you need to have with a dealer these days is just not worth having, it's just miserable, they are out to grab as much money from you as possible and it's so bad. Hell just a few months ago my dad took one of the skid steers from another company in to the dealer for a DPF issue i think, they drained half the tank of diesel at the dealer before giving the machine back. All crooks, you also never know who may be working on your machine, not everyone is qualified yet they still hire them.

      Yes, I am planning on doing some more TILT work today and when I need to switch to direct BUCKET I am going to attach the tilt to my Grapple. I there will be times when I have only the TILT and the Bucket nearby and that will be the challenge. When I am trying to dig up a stump with the bucket, I am sure the TILT attachment cannot take the level of strain that a direct Skid Steer to Bucket can take. So far when I put the Skid steer back into storage I have just left the Tilt attached. It's only about 5 inches thick so it's not taking up a lot of CONNEX storage space. The Trailer Mover Attachment is a good suggestion. It's leaned over at a good pickup angle. I just need to protect the hitch point so I don't bury it into the gravel pushing the TILT at it to connect or disconnect.... Very good suggestion. Have a great day, and don't get too hot in east Tennessee. I will have a pure Digging/Grading with Tilt video soon as I plan on filming later today (June 23, 2024)

The Home Depot by us rents chippers that can do 10 inch logs. There may be other equipment companies that would also rent to you. Only you can make the economic decision on buy vs rent. We have over 100 acres and it’s all forest so owning made sense for us.

    You are maxed out at 20A on the charge controller. Probably because you are using a 12.8V battery system voltage instead of 24V (25.6V) or 48V (51.2V). 20A @ 12.8V = 256W. You generally don't want to max-out your charge controller(s). You are wasting solar energy when you do that. In this case, if you want to stick with a 12V system voltage, then replace that Victron 100/20 with a Victron 150/35. If you want to do it properly, use a higher system voltage.... but it means getting a new battery or reconfiguring an existing battery pack, getting a 24V inverter, etc... so if you have already invested money in 12V components, you are kinda stuck unless you want to build another system from scratch with a proper system voltage. In your case I'd recommend at least a 24V (25.6V LiFePO4) system voltage. That same Victron 100/20 charge controller at 20A can handle 512W of solar panels on a 24V system vs only the 256W it can handle on a 12V system. It doesn't sound like you are ready to go all the way to 48V but as an example, a single Victron 100/20 charge controller can handle 1000W+ of solar with a 48V battery output. But at least consider 24V (25.6V LiFePO4) before you wind up investing too much money into 12V gear. -Matt

    • @ahbuildingafarm
      @ahbuildingafarm Месяц назад

      Matt- absolutely spot on. I’d love to go 48v but need 12v for the RV and its brakes. I don’t think I should do a down covert to power the brakes. If I had it to do over I definitely would get the 150/40 or 50 An individual EG4 12v can actually accept 100 amps per the specifications but I don’t think I’d push to that level. When we build our house that will definitely get a 48v system. Thanks for the input

    • @junkerzn7312
      @junkerzn7312 Месяц назад

      Yah. For 12V systems the 150/XXX charge controllers are definitely more of the sweet spot due to needing the higher amperages. The nice thing about the Victron 100/20 is that it is a pretty small device, so having more than one doesn't really take up all that much space. But it is definitely better-suited for 24V and 48V systems than for 12V systems. Another thing to consider on the charge controllers is to simply use a larger number of smaller charge controllers. And keep in mind that using separate dedicated charge controllers is *always* better than paralleling the solar panels if there is any chance of shading or partial shading. Having more than one charge controller also gives you some redundancy when things break. -- Yes, down-buffering is typically needed when you run a higher system voltage but have heavy "legacy" 12V loads such as brakes or jacks / stabilizers, and so forth. That is a show-stopper for a lot of people. Just in case you reconsider it in the future, here are the two typical methods: (1) Use a DC-DC converter (Victron makes some), where the DC-DC handles the heavy 12V loads. This can be fraught with problems though due to needing a fairly hefty converter to deal with surge loads / startup loads. (2) Use a small DC-DC charger (not converter) (Victron makes these too), and then have a satellite 12.8V LiFePO4 battery on the 12V side. This way the 12V battery handles the surge loads / heavy loads while the DC-DC charger simply trickle-charges the 12V battery at a relatively low amperage (often 6A is plenty, for example) to keep it topped-up. The nice thing about method #2 is that if you have a 12.8V 100Ah battery in there you can handle 100A, even 200A (depending on the battery) startup/surge loads as well as high-amperage continuous loads and yet still pack a small 6A DC-DC charger to keep it topped-up. (having a satellite battery also removes surges and startup voltage droop from the main system and has a few other advantages even when its just a 12V-12V). -Matt

In the video I have the full area blocked with vehicles so if my wife wanted to drive up to the top of the ridge she wouldn't be able to get by. We are working on clearing an area where we are going to build so this space is temporary. The RV is 35ft bumper to Tongue and the very widest spot is 35ft. If I end up needing this area for more than a year I will probably try to extend past the back of the CONNEX Shipping Container so I can push it back 20ft to 30ft and gain space that way. The best solution is for the rain to stop so I can clear our building spot and I will make a 150ft by 150ft staging/parking area.... if it ever stops raining here in East Tennessee. 280W with 20 A = 14A. So that mppt is charging with 14A already, the voltage shown is the current voltage of the battery, not the voltage its charged with. Victron has many calcs to minimize stress on batteries. It even overwrites certain BMS (eg. from pylontech) to not overcharge. Depending on settings, the last ~10% of a lifepo4 can take quite a bit more time to charge. My pylontech bms throttles to like 50% at 90% SOC!

      It is gravity feed. However the chute is at a much steeper angle than many others so in all of the videos posted I rarely need to push. I only need to push if it’s really light branches getting stuck on the strips of safety rubber hanging down to reduce blow back pieces. Or if the branch has a big Y in it that snags. The chipping knives are flush to the chute so with the steepness the logs just keep moving in via gravity. Thanks for watching and asking a question

    When you're towing the unit those front wheels need to be up for transport mode.

      Thanks and yes absolutely correct. I’ve forgotten to raise them several times now. I need to get into the habit of raising them as soon as I connect the chipper to the hitch. So far I have not damaged it and usually remember after a few hundred feet of towing Thanks for watching

    I started with a smaller side by side like what you show. The bed is too small and 4x4 is 100% necessary on the farm. I settled for a Diesel Kubota 4x4 4 seater. It can be converted to a two seater with a large bed. The unit weighs over 2k# so it is substantial and can carry a good payload. Carrying heavy loads of crushed rock or bags of fertilizer, it is good to have the hydraulic dump bed, which comes standard. The steering is also hydraulic so it takes no effort. It has auxiliary hydraulics in back which can be used to run things like hydraulic wood splitters, pruners or saws. Diesel is always abundant on the farm and it doesnt have the shelf life issues of gasoline. The running gear is basically the same thing smaller kubota 4x4 tractors use so it is super heavy duty and will last forever. I found this to be a huge upgrade over the smaller and lighter consumer side by sides.

      That Kubota is nice. Since our Farm is trees/forest management so far we haven't been moving anything yet that the UTV can't handle, and it is so quiet. I just wanted the silence. We have a Kubota SVL75-3 so we can move really heavy items with that, or use our F350 move dump trailers etc. We've been looking at dump trailers, but thus far we've been able to have dump truck get loads where we need them and just fine tune with tractor or the SVL75 I have a video coming where we dumped to create a staging area. Eventually we may need something more heavy duty like your Kubota UTV. I'd have to get a great deal, at auctions they are going for same as dealer costs thus far.

    I think other posters gave you some excellent explanations. Let me give you more of a cell-level view of what is happening. Basically, LiFePO4 (which is what I presume you have there) has an extremely flat charge and discharge curve. The voltage will barely budge until the battery is above 95% full or (when discharging) below 10%. Because of this, the battery will not self-regulate its current like lead-acid does to a degree, it will accept massive amounts of current if not limited in some way. So charge controllers must limit the current they push into the battery because they just can't push the voltage up to 14.2V as doing so would put hundreds of amps of current into the battery. The battery's BMS will cut it off to prevent internal damage, among other things. You will notice the Victron defaults are to charge to 14.2V and float at 13.5V. Lets translate to cell-level. For a 4S (12.8V LiFePO4) battery. A 12.8V LiFePO4 battery has 4 cells in series internally. * The Victron will charge the cells to 14.2V (3.55V/cell), limiting the current to whatever it can handle or the solar panels can put out while it does so. * The Victron will then hold 14.2V (3.55V/cell) until the current tails off or or an elapsed period of time depending on how it is setup. The battery is 98% full at the start of this and will be 100% full at the end. * Once it decides it is done charging, the Victron will allow the battery voltage to drop to 13.5V. This is 3.375V/cell. For LiFePO4 cells, to avoid over-charging the battery or putting unnecessary stress on the cells, the battery must be floated or the charger disconnected entirely (electrically). Usually it is floated because that way the solar cells can provide load support while the sun is still out. * The float level must be between 13.4V and 13.5V (3.35V/cell to 3.375V/cell). At this voltage the cells will neither charge nor discharge. They will remain at roughly 99% to 100% state of charge indefinitely. This puts the least stress on the battery short of disconnecting the charger entirely. Once you no longer have solar, the battery will begin to discharge to support your loads. The battery voltage will drop fairly quickly to roughly 13.2V or so (depends on lots of things) while still above 95% full. But then for nearly the entire discharge curve it will stay at between 12.8V and 13.2V (3.2V/cell to 3.3V/cell). Literally it will stay at that voltage delivering whatever power is asked of it all the way down until it has like 10% of remaining charge. Generally speaking, once your battery drops below 3.0V/cell (12.0V), it has 5% left so most people stop there. There is no need to allow the battery to discharge all the way to 2.5V/cell (10.0V) which is where the BMS disconnects as this puts unnecessary stress on the battery. -- One final point. Because of the way LiFePO4 cells work, there is no need to charge up to the BMS high-level disconnect of 14.6V (3.65V/cell). In fact, charging the battery to 13.8V (3.40V/cell) will pretty much charge the battery to 100%, just a bit more slowly than allowing it to rise to 14.2V (3.55V/cell). Also, if you don't have control over the BMS inside the battery, you don't really know when the BMS's balancer will operate. It is important to allow the balancer to operate, so in that situation most people use a 14.2V (3.55V/cell) target voltage. To ensure that the battery BMS's internal balancer runs. Unfortunately most run-of-the-mill AC chargers charge all the way to 14.6V, which is totally unnecessary. Proper charge controllers like the Victron default to more sane parameters (thankfully). That's the skinny on LiFePO4. It is also why a voltage-based "state of charge" display will not accurately tell you the actual state of charge... because the voltage barely moves for most of the charge and discharge curve. -Matt

      Thanks for that awesome detailed answer. This makes a lot of sense. I guess I were Victron I would word their manual and the application screen a bit differently so new to solar people like me would know what we are looking at and how the values in the app screen will change. It was cloudy today so batteries didn’t it to even 95% charged. Rain for the 4 days so I probably won’t be able to check until the weekend. Thanks for the best detailed and helpful answer

    Compare with BigBear LOGHOG BBC82 ruclips.net/video/IVISBnvVJbQ/видео.html Chops up 4"-5" diameter branches without any loss of RPM.

      The chipper is really turning both small branches and big 4,5,6+ inch logs into fine chips. We want to mulch the chips so this was the choice we made. Thanks for your insights

    So lithium works a little different because it has a way lower internal resistance than Lead Acid this is why it absorbs all the current so the voltage cant go up. Your batteries are currently in the flat part of the curve. Once they are fully charged you will see the voltage you put in your controller.

      Thanks for sharing. I’m going to monitor it. I’m heading out to the farm today but of course it’s going to be cloudy all day so they won’t get a full charge today
