5 Days of reserve on the Boeing 777
A bit of a different kind a video. I wanted to show how I go from being on reserve to getting a trip and kinda how that works. I can not go into extreme detail due to airline rules and reserve is different at every airline.

First month on reserve as a 777 pilot

The month went great over all. I think within a few months I will be able to get more FO trips vs relief pilot trips. Balancing the higher quality of flying vs the lack of trips is going to be a change.

I haven’t seen this guy in 18 years…. Crazy running into him in Narita at a hotel buffet.
How much do airline pilots actually work?
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.14 дней назад
Pilot pay is complicated. I am a QOL person and maximized my pay while minimizing my time away from home. I would manipulate my schedule to get high credit/pay trips as much as possible. I often would fly 1 hour DFW to AUS for example and come back the next day on a deadhead (flying as a passenger) and get paid 15 hours. Why am I wearing two watches? I have two phones…iPhone and Pixel.
How did I get here?
Просмотров 5 тыс.21 день назад
I will be the first to admit going from person on the street to the airlines was much easier for me than for someone making the journey today. It is what it is. If I still had to make the journey today I would. I love what I do for a living.

Most of the items I carry are red/blue to stand out. I need to put a bright color on my headset. They didn’t discover it until pushback time.

I expected to go to London often. This marks 4X in a month. I think I might start looking for a part time job over there ha. Still getting used to the 777. I will have a wrap up at the end of the month but I think I am on track to make what I would have made if I were an Airbus Captain but I will be working much less.

I appreciate your support. This video has more edits and blurring than I normally have. I had to choose between not posting or blurring and editing. This was my last trip when I was training for the 777. Narita is a long flight and probably not one I will get to do again as it goes very senior.
Expected but a surprise

I’m a low seniority 777 First Officer. I was previously a high seniority Airbus First Officer. I would like a little variety in destination is all.

    • @geekontheflightdeck
      @geekontheflightdeck 3 дня назад

Great question. It's all in the contract between hotel and airline. We arrive when we arrive and if it's before official check in time we still get our keys. We also check out whenever the flight leaves. Every now and then rooms aren't ready but I've never waited more than 20 minutes. I've heard stories in the distant past that crews overseas waited 90 minutes for their rooms.

Your friend was trying to encourage you to switch to Wide Body Domestic but Kirkland Airlines appear to be doing away with all the LAX / MIA, LAX / DFW etc etc as they get more A321 / A321 XLRs. Maybe good you did not switch !

Really enjoying your videos Darren, thank you. Looks like Kirkland Club Terminal A DFW if I am not mistaken ? So you have wanted to go anywhere but London for a while yet you mentioned what a great experience it was with Immigration at LHR, short walk and purser doing all the paperwork etc and bus to hotel. How did that compare with Madrid?? Happy Father’s Day.

I just want to call out how weirdly insightful your videos are. There is so much aviation content on RUclips including 747 captains that I watch and this is one of only two channels that I feel have given me a real glimpse into behind the scenes at an airline. The mechanics of being a captain. As a PPL(H) who’s thought about doing an ATPL or just finishing my fixed wing PPL and is currently a software guy full time hesitant to move away from my high salary for something more fun I have really enjoyed the detail and really made me reconsider aviation as a career. I grew up dreaming of flying, got a PPL(H) in 2009 and backed out as pay was unlivable It’s funny that the two most insightful behind the scenes airline RUclips channels are both AA. I have BA equivalent of Concierge Key but I think I’ll give AA a try on my next LHR-JFK

They bid a commutable schedule or buy hotels or a crashpad. No major airlines provide hotels or transportation in the United States. Some regionals do or did.

There could be worse places than London. Luckily there’s tons to do. I fly in about twice a month as a passenger and it’s once you scratch the surface there’s a lot to enjoy for me anyway. Next time you’re in London if you want to get away from the tourists: - On weekdays at lunch time Leather Lane near Farringdon has about 30 food stalls. Brick lane for food on weekends. - If you want to eat somewhere nice at 4AM on a Tuesday a place called “Duck and waffle” was open 24/7 when I lived in London pre covid Brixton is nice on the weekend. Windsor is sort of near Heathrow and has some sightseeing Hottest hot wings of my life excluding McGibbins in Montreal was in Red Dog Saloon London. Bodeans chain is hit and miss but do decent Kansas BBQ. If you want to get a fancy snacky gift for your wife check out Fortnum and Mason (I think they are also in the airport too).
