I got the reMarkable Paper Pro! Is it worth $700?
Hello - I am looking for noting and reading pdf, power point and word documents. I like supernote and onyx functions but most interesting seems RMPP - as it has biggest screen. I also read some epubs on my kindle or buy them. I am testing onyx boox 4c and yes it has all functions but too complicated.
Hey, I've read that the newer models have a brighter and more white screen plus some color improvements. Do you know anything about that? I'm between the Note Air 4c and The RMPP(As a lot of people I assume)and read A LOT reviews on those two. If only the Boox Air had that Gallery Display!! My main requirements will be Comic and Color Book reading and some note taking. But all those extra capabilities of the Boox makes it very tempting to me. Do you think the RMPP's screen worth the extra penny considering that its has some limits to its software plus that you have to convert everything in PDF. Thanks in advance. Just found out about your channel BTW you are doing a great job, I love the quality of your videos and photos! Greetings from Greece!
Very well covered, this Tag feature is missed in a lot of reviews. Have you used the Ad Ins yet for Word, Power Point, Chrome yet? The Chrome Ad In lets you send directly to your rMPP your current website page. The other feature not shown much is the active screen share function in the rM application.
I had the remarkable paper pro for one week and send it back yesterday. It is a great device and I loved the construction and screen and the feel to write on it. But unfortunately it has for me not enough support for simple straight lines or simple forms and I can't print with it. It's a shame, I liked it a lot.
I'm considering getting the RPP, but to opt out of the folio & keyboard due to the price of both accessories being too high. Is it possible to use/sync any blue tooth keyboard with the RPP? And do you recommend any other folios? Another question: I use OneNote for my work and wanted to know if there is a workaround to use OneNote or take advantage of OneNote with the RPP and if so do you have a video on that?
Your channel is very interesting! Thanks for the video. One question, did you consider the type folio for your RPP? I find it a perfect complement for long writing session.
Thank you for putting this together. I'm awaiting arrival of my rMPP (5 days to go) and had no idea the tagging system was this powerful. The ability to tag at the object as well as page level is amazing-I have no idea why reMarkable doesn't highlight this capability more! Also, the bookmark/Lesezeichen tag is brilliant!
The negativity towards these devices always makes me laugh. If writing is what you want to do, there isn’t a better device. I have this and the hemingwrite at home, very happy with both purchases. Can’t put a price on time and efficiency. Yes you can get a decent laptop for the same price, but you will hit your daily word count so much faster on a distraction free device and won’t spend ridiculous amounts of time feigning productivity and changing fonts on your blog.
Ha I better keep my reMarkable Paper Pro ☺️ I’m not sure I need color 🤔 Appreciate the light because I can use it in a dark room or at night 😁
Why do people want these and why can they be sold for so much money? You either get it, or you don't ...if you don't get it then don't buy one. Simple. I think you explained it very well, thank you. I was considering buying a Freewrite but opted for the remarkable paper pro with keyboard, which has worked out very well for my needs.
You make really great videos, thanks for that. I have a question, my belated Christmas present is coming on Saturday, the Remarkable Paper Pro. I will mainly use it for notes, work, etc. However, I would also like to use it for evening reading in bed or on the couch. Now to my question, where do you get eBooks for the Paper pro? Keep up the good work. 👍 Many greetings from Germany
This was immensely useful! Thank you for making it.
Can I watch video on this and what is the experience like? thanks
Thank you so much for the video, and I’m so glad you actually compared with the Boox device. I was writing the pros and cons of Remarkable and Boox in the morning, and my decision towards Remarkable was also how distraction free it is… I’m so glad I found someone who shares the same idea, and appreciate just a simpler life!
I have to laugh. The name of the device is PAPER Pro, not E-READER Pro. The comment about insufficient memory is therefore illogical. It is not an e-reader.
Thank you for including the musical score. This is my main reason for wanting an e-ink device, and it is not considered by most reviewers as a use case. However I understand from your video that annotations don't resize with the original, so if I annotated the score, and then resized it, that the annotations wouldn't also resize? That makes it completely unusable for music unfortunately, as the placement of the annotations is even more critical than your example with highlighting. And resizing before making annotations would not always be practical, I don't think.
Thanks mate, because of your extensive 100-day review, I'm actually going to buy the Remarkable Paper Pro. It has quelled a lot of my concerns. Thank you!
there are Chromebooks available now for £130,, and modern Chromebooks can work OFFLINE ,, with ANDROID or Linux apps,,, or google docs web pages and then synchronise with a wifi signal ... later
One problem that I noticed is that when you go to the tags list, they are not in alphabetic order and when the number of tags increases, it is very annoying trying to find a specific one
I could get an old AlphaSmart for a tenth of the price...
This thing is insanely expensive Jesus Christ. Writing on a super old think pad or MacBook makes way more sense. I guess you pay for the whole branding thing. Absolut madness ...
I honestly can't understand why someone would spend so much money on the Freewrite. An e-ink tablet hooked up to a mechanical keyboard is a MUCH BETTER option - larger screen, keyboard of your choice, multiple types of transferable storage cards, all the functionality of editing in one place, and in the case of the Supernote, upgradability of battery and motherboard. When the battery on the FW dies, you're essentially left with a very expensive paperweight. No thanks!
Ich habe seit heute das Beta 3.17 auf meinem RPP und kann seit dem nicht mehr auf Google Drive und Microsoft one zugreifen...
I found the flickering really distracting and headracking, the text flickers first then the colours flickers again or even a third time!!!
The text is blue
Have you tried this : Open a PDF, add a page, it will be blank, then when you are on that blank page, tap Layers, then tap Templates, and you can add any template now to the blank screen, so if your like me, and have a PDF open, and want to take notes, you no longer have to have a blank page, you can now add any template. This was NOT available in 3.16.X ( I believe ) But it's available now in 3.17.X Please correct me if I am wrong. I don't think any other tablet can do this. I have a Boox Note Air, and a Supernote, they can't do this. I like this feature a lot.
Hi and many thanks for the comment. It is part of the 3.16 update already (even in the release notes as far as I see). When I upgraded my device, I was so happy to see this huge color improvement, that I did not even check out the other features. But you are right, this is another great feature I may use more frequently in the future.
Yes , exactly this I mean. And, from what I can see, this Bug might have got returned in the 3.17.X, I understand you are now on 3.16.X, where it appears to be Not present. So, it's good that it is not present on the 3.16.X. Unfortunately, I have observed this problem (that after erasing with the back side of RMPP pen+) happening again (reoccurred) on the 3.17.X.
Hope it is still a beta issue and they are going to fix it in 3.17 final, which should arrive soon-ish anyway.
@@Artellico Yeah, likewise, hope for that.
I noticed that when you swipe to the next page it works smoothly. I have t try two or three times before it goes to the next page. What is your trick?
I am not sure there is a trick ... What I realized myself is, that sometimes my fingers are very "dry" and then obviously the electric contact is missing or reduced. As the surface of the device is very rough / grainy, one thing seems to change this "issue" is NOT to clean it too often. This seems to leave a thin layer of finger grease on the surface ... Not sure if this is the reason and a trick or just lazy 😀
So I should just lick my finger before ‘turning’ the page like in a real book. 😀 Thank you for replying.
You have to make it very light touch. It never flips to the next page whenever I’m heavy handed with my swiping.
Unfortunately, it looks like this Bug is Back : ( I'm on 3.17.X and I'm again seeing this same bug, which was solved in 3.15.X
Today they've released a boomer feature - automatic shapes in RMPP 3.17.X, that's the biggest feature. BTW, I think those bug with the "erasing yellow highlighter using RMPP Pen+ backside leaves ghosting" is back.. : ( Can you please check from this your current version, 3.16.0 if you are able to see those same Bug or not ? Thanks in advance.
It's about those your other video | The Shocking Truth About reMarkable's Yellow Ghosting!
I hope I understand you correctly, I have filmed a quick reply, is this what you were looking for: ruclips.net/video/2TFFNROr7T0/видео.html
@@Artellico Yes , exactly this I mean. And, from what I can see, this Bug might have got returned in the 3.17.X, I understand you are now on 3.16.X, where it appears to be Not present. So, it's good that it is not present on the 3.16.X. Hopefully, those issue will be resolved in the 3.17.X as well.
Such a pity. I returned my RMPP because the pdfs I was working from had such frail text because the high contrast was lost when diagrams were included on the page. Presumably RM knew about the shortcomings and were working on these fixes at the time of release, but released anyway. Well done to those who held on to their devices and can enjoy these improvements. +1 shot in foot for RM for bearing the cost of returns that were otherwise avoidable.
Thank you for the video by the way. I really enjoy your output.
Many thanks, and sorry you did already return it. I have to say, the experience with combined text and pictures is now much better, a real improvement. Did you go for another device (Onyx, Supernote ...?)
@@Artellico Yes. I bought a Go 10.3 which is excellent but I much preferred the writing feel on the RMPP. The Go 10.3 gives limited tactile feedback and lacks something of user satisfaction to me. I also loved the endless pages of the RMPP which the Boox lacks. When I’m practicing maths more single page space is really helpful. I’m waiting now to see what the writing feel of the Note Max is. I have come pretty close (several times) to re-purchasing the RMPP though.
@@davidr1431 You're describing my exact situation! I returned my RPP before the 100 day window and went for the 10.3 but am missing the RPP now due to its excellent wriiting feel and expandable canvas. I'm also finding that I am not really using any of the additional features that come with the Go 10.3 as I had anticipated and don't like the 'Boox Drop' interface as much as the one by RPP. Like you, I'm now considering repurchasing the RPP.
@ I doubt we are alone. Last night I was trying to work out how to use Calibre for converting books to pdfs. At some level of my mind I have already decided to repurchase the RMPP. The decision just hasn’t made its way to the end of my purchasing finger yet.
You are then going to love the beta 3.17 that I just got
What extra does it contain?
Same question here: I have decided not to go for beta releases because I don't want to experiment. I am still curious what to expect 😀
He's just trolling, there is nothing new regarding image rendering in 3.17. The main feature in this release is automatic shape drawing.
Well, this could be a useful update for me as well, as I use it as a whiteboard for presentations sometimes, and shapes could be an additional benefit.Let's see how it will be implemented ... I am still waiting for the final release, no rush here.
@@ArtellicoYes course, still useful, just not related to the topic of this video as this guy implied.
May I ask which 3rd party extension you use to get the graphics from articles?
Yes, it's this one. works well for me, though reMarkable have updated the API and on some devices, the automatic upload does not work at the moment. It still works on my Chromebook, though. If not, the web capture is downloaded and saved as a file (I chose epub) which you have (temporarily) to upload manually via the app. I am sure the developer is going to fix this in the near future. chromewebstore.google.com/detail/repub/blkjpagbjaekkpojgcgdapmikoaolpbl
Hi. I hesitate between both brands. Boox because applications, remarkable because linux ,not android. I remember when my cellphone get aged, android made them slow. So I am really afraid about android on boox
Great video but I feel the need to reiterate myself here once again. I am one of the most strong supporters of US letter size tablet for academic papers, reading a book in two pages landscape mode etc. but this to be happen is a major design choice and philosophy linked to the choice of the screen chosen. Glass or plastic with a clear trade off. Glass provides an iPad sturdiness feel, solid construction and the ability to add front light. Mobius flexible screen provides a lightweight structure that can easily reach A4 size with reasonable weight (look quaderno a4) better writing feel and an unparalleled eink feel visual experience. The you have to sacrifice the mediocre front light and the solid iPad aluminium feel of construction to achieve a better more functional device. iPad oled 13 is solid, thin and lightweight enough in the perfect size but not sure remarkable is ready yet to reach that level of engineering. The other point for me is that I do not want to be monogamous in my writing feel options and choices. The Wacom platform with the various choices offered that and this is a step backward. I do not like the glass matte texture feeling. Is great for an iPad because is the best and only alternative but is a step backward for an eink devise. Just compare with remarkable 1 and you see the difference. The eink does not visually appearing so much like paper anymore. Is glass like other tablets. I have no issues with the price of 700£ is acceptable for me if the product was right. Somehow they need to make money and be motivated. I love the simplicity of the software is a plus to me this is a writing and study tool that I can pass to my 7 year old daughter without worrying about Facebook, RUclips and other garbage distractions. My last concern is if the early versions have different screens and cannot be corrected and be as much as white as later versions with the 3.16 update in which case I should return this. But I guess that this update is purposely delayed so when we know it will be too late as the 100 days will be already have passed. All in all, I am looking forward to 13 us letter size device with mobius flexible screen without glass and Wacom technology where the moniker Air is more appropriate. The rest is more or less fine. I am willing to sacrifice front light and iPad type solid construction. Functionality over beauty. 64 memory is small (I envy your library, my books are around 20-30 gb in Goodnotes ) but sd card is a no-no. These cards can be corrupted easily and have not a nice integration. Just increase memory with the option to pay for that. But nothing of what I propose will happen soon if at all from this or another company. This market is fragmented and too confused.
I just scheduled mine for return, unfortunately. The unit was really fit for my use case - thought dump, document mark-up and review, and reading and highlighting EPUBs, and all of that in sync with phone and PC, great deal for me - only to let me down. The ghosting progressively got worse to the point of rendering device unusable almost all the time. Besides ghosting in on-mode, when the unit is in sleep mode even, the bottom half of the screen is yellowish, has that tint. Factory resets did not help (not to mention power on/off and just sleeping mode on/off), nor did beta enrolment yield any improvements. I read on Reddit that people are having these challenges, and some significant percentage of them as well. I decided to contact customer support today. Upon reviewing my case (I sent a few videos and several pictures) they offered to replace it instantly saying “your unit is eligible for replacement”. I checked with them the following scenario: if I went for a replacement, I would not be able to extend 100-day customer satisfaction period to be eligible for a full refund again; rather, I would step into a regular 1-year warranty period, where replacements are option if eligible. They also would not ship the replacement unit until old one is sent first, and since I bought it from Serbia to be delivered to a friend in Croatia, I would lose the 3-month test period completely to be able to check out the new unit. For the amount of money (I got type folio and a pen-eraser) I just though it as too big of a gamble and started a return process today. Really sad to dispose of it; perhaps just better to wait for new-product bugs to disappear (be it manufacturing process or SW or HW itself) to get a mature product at a later stage. Or as I see it now, just wait for a RM3, black & white with a front light, more memory and better screen. No fear of Gallery 3 tech letting you down
Thank you for this in-depth review. I just purchased this device for taking notes, studying (professional development courses) and professional reading (company documents). I haven't received it yet and agree that the price is higher than I would have liked, but look forward to using it daily in my work and personal life. I have a phone and laptop for apps and I like the idea of this not including those, as there are aspects of my work where smart devices are not allowed for safety reasons (distraction). Thank you again. Mine will be under the Christmas tree and I can't wait to open it and start writing. Merry Christmas.
Supernote Manta just came out, are you sure you are not getting that instead?
Thanks for your comment. :-) I think it's a good choice, if it's the right device for you. Yes, there are many choices, and competition is a good thing. I have found that it noticeably boosted my productivity and made my focus significantly higher. This is why I recommend the reMarkable Paper Pro for anyone in the same position. I hope it turns out the productivity device you are looking for and wish you a Happy Christmas!
Remarkable paper pro is the first eInk device for notetaking and I have to say it is a great choice ...
Fully agree, This is what I found out myself as well. Despite not being without flaws and room for improvement, using it the way intended, it's certainly a perfect choice.
Thank you :) It was really helpful.. I had few questions : 1. How is the battery life? -- i am experiencing that its draining fast for me. 2. Did you experience brightness level discrepancies when you use it after its been sleeping.. sometime i have to manually change the levels to get the brightness level to its brightest possible even if its already been there on the highest level from beginning. 3. sometimes marker is failing to type . it happens very sporadically, so not sure if its device's issue or something which i am doing wrong.
Welcome! 1. I am experiencing shorter battery life than in some competing devices, e.g. all the Kindles of the world, but decent enough to get you through a couple of days of work. Using it non-stop and maybe turning on the light, perhaps just one day, but this never happens to me. Still, there are a few purely reading focussed devices beating the reMarkables in battery life. But also much worse ones, namely most of the Android powered devices which consume much more power because of the heavier OS. 2. I never had any issues with brightness so far, but I only really use it at night time reading sessions. 3. I have only experienced sporadic cases of the screen not accepting my finger gestures, but not with the stylus. In contrast to many other devices, this one has proven to the most reliable I have ever owned.
Did not notice the refreshes until you mentioned it!
It is my intention to share everything I find to be worth mentioning. The good, the bad and the ugly (if this is the case). This may or may not be of any concern depending on your personal preferences. It does not bother me at all, but it may be an issue for some.
Thank you or such a comprehensive review from your perspective (research, reading, organizing). VERY well done. I’m still deciding on switching from using an iPad for note-taking and this has helped.
Man thanks!! I still own an iPad Pro (though not the latest model), and I rarely touch it at the moment. It's still a great device, but it seems not to fit into my use case scenario any longer, as I am not looking for an entertainment or "do-it-all" device. If note-taking or long term reading is what you are looking into, this device is definitely worth considering.
Transcript is not searchable - does this review address reading and annotation of scientific PDF articles, and getting these on/ off the device?
Sorry, no this is not possible. Annotations are embedded into the document when you export it back onto your desktop, but annotations on their own cannot be exported currently (e.g. as on Kindle). That's something they could add to the software easily, but it may not fit into their "philosophy".
As it is sufficient for me to have the PDF with embedded annotations / highlightings, this is perfectly OK for me, but may be a limitation for some.
@@Artellico Thanks for confirming this for me. You are correct that being able to export or index highlights/annotations would be a huge step forward.
4:50 finally a review that highlights how well the screen is matched to bezels. Only device where it comes close, followed by Supernote.
The bigger one could be called Remarkable Scientist :)
Nice wording 😀 +1 from my side! According to the current industry trend, I was just thinking about a suitable naming convention like "pro max plus" ...
thick, heavy, too dark for an anemic front light, resolution low, black is a cyan heavy blue black CMY smear, lousy pen.
You've had it one hundred days, my pre order may arrive Xmas eve,! In Australia.
Hi, I am sorry to hear that. Maybe I received it early because I was ordering DURING the announcement / presentation beginning of September, and as I am living in Europe, this could be the reason for early delivery. reMarkable is based in Norway. Not an excuse, but maybe an explanation. Hope you get your device soon to enjoy the first experiences over Christmas. Good luck!
I fully agree that reMarkable should enable tags to be sorted alphabetically!
Coming from a go 10.3 I really wanted to give the paper pro a shot but after being on my 3rd device, having to replace it for a 4th one because of crazy hardware issues like extreme line wobble and pin holes in the screen I am considering to just ask for a refund. I wish I could have tested the device but I kinda lost faith for the moment. I might come back in a year or so hoping they sorted out their QA by then. (The chance of getting back to back to back faulty devices should be so incredibly low and yet I've read statements from many people they had to go through the same, which leads me to believe it might be a QA issue) - not hating on remarkable btw, just too annoyed at this point as it has caused severe distractions for me, without even using it. I am happy you like it though and got a perfectly working device. I hope I can join the club at some point as well.
Gee that is bad, I'm this close to buying a Remarkable Paper Pro to replace my Remarkable 1 but hearing about these hardware issues, I'm not sure if I want to take that risk. The fact you got 3 bad ones in a row is a huge huge concern. Then again, if I wait for the next Remarkable Paper Pro, that's another 3 years or so, and I don't know if my Remarkable 1 will last that long. How's your 4th one going?
@@jinwan3088 I still haven't decided if I want to go ahead and replace it again, I might just go for a full refund now. I am too worried that once I fully invest in the device I can't be sure it will develop some issue later down the line. The return process takes up roughly one week and I just don't want to end up being without a e-ink note taker for a week (if the replacement is without flaws that is; you might end up getting in a replacement loop again for weeks). It just seems like a gamble at this point and I wasted too much time with the whole support, shipping it back, waiting for a new device and getting disappointed over and over already.

I am sad to hear about those issues. I can understand that your trust is ending after 4 iterations. The fact that my experience is different does not help anyone with those issues, and considering the price point, this definitely should not happen. I will watch our for any issues in the future, but as of today, I did not have any quality issues with the device and really enjoy the benefits. But of course, I would report immediately if I encounter similar issues myself. There is also one thing to consider: your location. Usually - living in Europe - I have similar issues with international purchases, as any return is much more difficult and usually, there is no (easy) way to get customs and taxes back. This makes me always think twice before ordering some fancy device from China for example, even if they are nowadays selling decent products in good quality as well. I am keeping my fingers crossed for your future experience and wish you all the best - and of course also happy holidays!
@@Artellico Thanks for that, it's comforting to hear you had no issues. The one time my Remarkable had issues, the Remarkable team replaced my Remarkable 1, so for one thing, their service seems to be great.
thanks for the video - have you already seen the Boox Note Max announcement? (regarding screen size - I'm not a Boox fan, just to mention it)
I am very tempted to get this one, but this is still one major issue for me: The lack of color. In Europe, the Note Max will anyway not be available before Christmas anymore, so I may wait for Amazon availability in spring, as this allows me easy testing and give me a no-questions-asked return policy. But my doubts remain: Will I ever use this device, which will cost me another 700-800€, as much as I need to justify the purchase - without color? Don't know yet, waiting for 2025 to decide ...
Curious how would you read books and take notes on RPP? I love using it for articles and academic paper that are short; I annotate and that’s about it; but when it comes to reading non-fiction books its lack of a proper reader app that allows me to take and export notes really makes me wonder if I should return it… wondering how you use it for reading
The RM allows you add pages to books, pdfs, epubs, etc.. And note take all day long. I have worked 16,000 pages of the Pali cannon plus added hundreds of personal note commentaries before and after many of the books pages, alongside highlights, underlines, and notes on the pages of the books themselves. You can select individual notes and send to email, or simply use Google drive integration. You can also two finger swipe from any side of the rm pro to open a 6 inch blank space margin to take notes. What specially are you struggling with when reading books? You simply get the book from Kindle or pdf or epubs on your phone, tap. The share button and select Remarkable app. You can also use a tag named "book name", and simply create many many different notes, all searchable under the title of the book name tag. Then just use Google drive integration if you want them into pc, or simply use remarkable connect subscription to have access to those notes on phone or anywhere.
thanks for the detailed response! the lack of functionality to highlight with notes, and export those highlight with notes so I can edit and digest further is more what I meant. I’m having a hard time to find all the hand-written notes in a book with many pages. It fees like I write the notes and that’s about it, can’t easily refer to them again
@sherrywang6230 certainly! We are here to hell each other. You can highlight all notes, anywhere written, typed, or already there from imported document by selecting the highlighter tool. It sounds like you are not using tags. The primary organization tool for hand written notes on the RM Pro is Tagging. Simply create a tag named the same as the document you're working in, and you then apply that tag to all hand written notes inside of a book. Then you can simply select search tags and see the full list of tags, or from home screen select hamburger icon top left and select tags. Simply tap a tag to see all hand written notes within that book. Also, inside a book, from the left side menu there is the top tools and the bottom set of tools. The first icon on the bottom set of tools, select that, and you can see list or grid view, and scroll through the pages to see all hand written notes within the document, and copy, edit, move them, or re arrange anyway you prefer.
As far as I see this is also a design philosophy, that may not suit your needs. A feature to add notes to a book and then export them into a text document or - like on a Kindle - have a dedicated section in the desktop app with all notes and then some 3rd party tools wot work with them (e.g. Obsidian plugins), is something which I do not see in the remarkable "philosophy". The reason why this is no issue for me is, that I don't work like that. I am still reading many physical books and I understand the reMarkable "philosophy" more like a digitized version of that. Maybe it's my age (51) that I can live with that :-) This makes the reading "app" full functional for me, because all I need are page turns, sufficient speed, and a great color display. If you look into all the different comments here, in comment sections of other reviews, on Reddit etc. there are many "complaints" about these limitations. The more comments there are, the more likely that the company may take some of them into account in the future. Yes, the software is still very limited, and I feel they want to keep it as minimalistic as possible, but there is always hope :-)
