    Hi I got a 1 1/2” butcher block slab I gotta cut up to make a kitchen countertop for RV. It’s 40”x 60” not completely flat. Too big obviously for a feed planer.

    • @agjohnsonandson
      @agjohnsonandson 2 месяца назад

      That is an interesting predicament. If it is an end grain butcher block, water and clamps will never work. A board only twists and cups with the grain, not end grain. Even if it is long grain butcher block, I am doubtful that water and clamps would help due to the short lengths. It may be worth a shot. My approach would be to use a hand power planer. Mark the high spots and then carefully plane the surface. Hope this helps!!!

    • @froglobster
      @froglobster 2 месяца назад

      @@agjohnsonandson Yeah I thought about the planer, I think when I pull the old countertop and place atop big butcher block slab to copy I’ll aim for the flattest area, cut out and plane if I have to. Thanks have a good day

      Thank you for watching. It wasn’t anything too magical. I laid a soaking wet towel over the piece and left it there for about an hour. The towel was removed and the clamps and cauls added. I let it sit for a week at a time and then poured water onto the convex side and made sure the clamps were tight. Periodically, checking the moisture content with a meter. I have a commercial dehumidifier in the shop that keeps the humidity at 65%. Hope that helps.

      There are a couple of videos on my channel that walkthrough disassembling a chair. Hopefully, the prior repairs used hide glue. If so, water or vinegar will soften the hide glue. If it was carpenters glue (PVA) you can try softening it with a heat gun and use spreader clamps reversed to disassemble. If you have trouble and need guidance my contact info is on the channel about page.

    I think you should wet the side that caved/curved in. Basically this side side has shrunk more than the other side, hence the warping.

    • @agjohnsonandson
      @agjohnsonandson 4 месяца назад

      The mechanics of wood movement is fascinating. I try to envision the situation that caused the twist/warp. In this situation it was the bottom of the chest and it cupped upwards. Indicating to me the moisture came from the bottom. I applied the towel to the top (convex side) and clamped it to counter act the twist. This method is supported by Bob Flexner in one of his books, too. We will know in another week when I take the clamps off. Hit that subscribe button to see the update.

  • @glenbayley9697
    @glenbayley9697 4 месяца назад

    I really appreciate your video on this topic. I’ve heard opposing instructions on how to do this though - some say wet down the stretched side of the board and clamp in compression (so the cells can’t expand when wet and then dry smaller), others say wet down the compressed side and clamp so you are over compensating. I’ve had little luck the times I tried - the wood will just spring back to its former shape over time. It would be nice for your video to have covered exactly how you do this and show the results.

    • @agjohnsonandson
      @agjohnsonandson 4 месяца назад

      Thank Glen. My success is mixed. A lot depends on the type of wood, it’s thickness and how bad it is bowed. It try to drive up the moisture content in the entire board before clamping. From a botanical perspective the cells will never totally recover and regain their shape. While I expect some success, it will never be true flat. Based on your suggestion, I will post a follow up. Be sure to subscribe so you get notified. There is a video on my channel that I used the same approach to take the bow out of a mirror back. It was 1/4” which made it easier. Check it out!

    I went dumpster diving at a house that was built in 1853. I pulled out a chair no arms and the caning was missing. After inspecting the wood I noticed there was a rung missing. Where would I go to have a duplicate made of the same missing part? Obviously it have to be a woodworking shop that had a lathe so they could make me a new one. I have a customer who had a chair with missing spindles. With found a similar chair on the Marketplace with identical spindles. She bought the Marketplace chair and I used it for parts to repair her chair.
