OM System OM-1 mk ii - Wildlife Photography Review
After 1 month putting the OM System OM-1 mk ii through it's paces, I go through my opinions on this camera from the point of view of a full time wildlife photographer and user of the OM-1 mk 1 for the last 2 years. I've not been paid by OM nor have they asked for anything specific to be said in a review - these are my full & honest thoughts on this camera. Please let me know if you have any questions and I'd be more than happy to answer.

Photographing Salmon in Scotland
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.16 часов назад
I'm in the beautiful north of Scotland attempting to photograph leaping salmon. This was taken during a holiday to celebrate my uncle's 60th birthday, where we were visiting areas my grandad used to take my mum & him on holiday. Whilst having a meal at the fishing lodge they used to stay at every summer, we walked along the river and saw tons of leaping salmon! Safe to say, once I saw that, I k...

I decided to spend the morning up in the Yorkshire Moors to see if I could photograph some of the many Red Grouse that call the blanket of heather home. Hi Marc, thanks for the video. Is this review based on the new firmware updates for both cameras? I have the Mark 1 and with the 1.7 update I found AF, tracking and acquisition improved with the OM 100-400 but didn’t notice a difference with the 300 f4 pro. The 300 lens is great. Maybe reviews should include what lens were used. I still have lots to learn with the Mark 1 so not even tempted by the Mark 2.

    @Mthompson4545 6 часов назад

Hi Mark. Can you go into a little more detail about being able to assign different autofocus functions to the shutter and AF-On buttons? From reading the Mark II manual, it looks like you can tell one to do the subject detection and the other to use just the autofocus target point. But if you are using all points to track the subject, then switching to all points only without tracking will just focus on the closest object. I was hoping to have one button assigned to a single or small point without tracking, but want to use all points for subject detection. Have you found a way to do that?

Very good review. I did trade in my OM-1 for the OM-1 MkII. I owned the OM-1 for a little over 2 years and now owned the OM-1 MkII for 6 months. I am pleased with the upgrade. Your re3view was right on. I wish I could have kept my OM-1 to be used as a second body but it took the money from trading it in along with trading in several lenses to help pay for the OM-1 MkII.

Hi Marc - Just wondered if you have updated your Mk1 to the 1.7 firmware? If so, interested to hear if you think it makes much difference in AF performance. I believe it only affects 'all-targets' mode, so may be of value for the birds in flight shots. Thanks for another helpful vid and keep up the good work. Cheers

Hi Marc 👌🏻 video I am so lucky to have 2 OM-1 mark II bodies they’re great . I use one mainly for photography and the other is setup for or video. Up to now I am glad that I can do that, it saves time depending on what my goal is. If photography is your main goal, it does not matter much if one has a OM-1 mk 1 or mk 2, both are great and/or the upgrade of the mk 2 features are needed for your specific needs. It’s a fact that their are now great price offers for the OM-1 mark 1 ! Ton

I just received my new MK-ii a couple of weeks ago. Was out today purposely shooting birds that were in tangles and behind twigs. My feeling is the bird detect and auto focus is improved. I was hesitant to upgrade myself but with $300 US discount along with 10% additional discount for MK I users I jumped in. I am not getting any younger so decided to treat myself while I am still able. Next Week will be on a pelagic trip so will be putting it to a real test. My MKi will be a backup and my dedicated macro setup. Cheers

Nice one Marc 🙂 This reminded me of my own photography experience with Red Grouse in north Yorkshire many years ago, something that I should repeat again. The “car hide” technique from the minor upland/moorland roads is certainly an easy means to photograph this species (and indeed Black Grouse at a lek in north Wales which has been my more recent experience). If road side photography of Red Grouse fails, just take a picture of one on the side of a bottle of a well-known beverage and pretend 😀 Good luck with the Bottlenose Dolphins at Chanonry Point in the Moray Firth. In my personal experience at this location, an incoming tide is best as it drives the salmon in which the Bottlenose Dolphins feed on. If you are unlucky, refer to my previous tip but drink the contents 😀

@@marchumphreyphotography I thought I recognised it ! It's on the road which leads north from Askrigg and brings you out at Healaugh in Swaledale. I think it's called High Lane ? And yes, there are extensive grouse moors on the hills between Wensleydale and Swaledale, plus more on the northern side of Swaledale, though some of those are also M.O.D. firing ranges and hence inaccessible. They're easy to spot on Google Earth by their "patchwork quilt" appearance.

hi, if you want to have flexibility, without spending an eye and at the same time have an image quality comparable to that of the 150-600 I think you could consider the 100-400 which is also lighter than the 300 f4. Naturally the best in terms of flexibility and quality remains the 150-400 f4.5 pro.

I haven't owned the 2x converter for a couple of years now, but I really never got on with the combination of the 300 with the 2x. I may have had a bad copy... but the sharpness was just never good enough for me. Plus I've always found being stuck at f8 being rather limiting - I'd rather use the 1.4x and crop in a bit. Thanks for the comment Paul

Hello Marc, I use the f4.0 300mm and often add the 1.4x extender when the light allows. That combination lets me wander for hours. That formula of weight v results v currency… no better value for me. I am a subscriber to your excellent channel. Thank you for bringing us along.

Thanks Joe! the 300mm, with or without the 1.4x is simply excellent isn't it. I just long for a zoom at times...

Obviously never going to use this lens but I can imagine it has the same issues at the Canon 200-800 on a crop body. Fairly heavy, bad lowlight performance and distortion issues once you hit the longer FL.

Having never used the 200-800, I can't comment on that, but yes - the distortion issues are a pain. It would be magical if we could shoot at equivalent 1200mm and there be no issues... but alas, physics is an issue!

I’ve now got both the 150/600 and the 300 prime. My take on testing both at same focal length and apertures eg 300 + MC20 and 150/600 at F8 is that sharpness stands up reasonably well but the prime has better contrast. Easily sorted in post production. But at 67 years old I find I cannot hold the zoom to the eye for very long. It will be a monopod/tripod lens for me and the prime for wandering about shots

Lovely stuff Mike - both lenses worth a place in your kit bag! Yes I think for a lot of people, a monopod is a worthy investment for this lens. Thanks for the comment

Fits with my thoughts. Atmospherics come into play much more here in Australia, 28-35 degrees gives lots of heat haze to shoot through and sharpness is hard to acheive. I will stick with my 300mm and MC14 for now. Being in my 70's does limit the cash a bit, hard to fund this or my real druther the 150-400mm. Thomas Eisel recommends using f8 with the 150-600 for best results which my mate found to be spot on advice.

Ah I can imagine! Yes, the 300mm + 1.4x is a wonderful combo (and a lot lighter). I do just find myself longing for a good zoom lens, and like you, I can't afford the 150-400! I'm sure f8 would improve this lens, however most of the time in the UK, you need to get as much light as possible haha!
