Here's another one of those early speech synthesis demonstrations that was nearly lost to the ages. I found this on an ancient UC Berkeley site in .AU format. ive always adored it when people take vocal-like samples or stretches that normally arent meant to be musical, and MAKE them musical. this HAD to have taken ages, you've earned a sub good fellow <3
It took several days/weeks to make this yeah, but honestly the vocals weren't that hard to do, since I was using Chipspeech with a MIDI controller. If I can get the file off my old laptop, I should make a walkthrough video...

Hey! I know this is quite an old video but I would be super interested in seeing a behind the scenes in how you're consistently able to make S.A.M sound so, musical?. I've used it before and it seems like you would have to do a fair amount of work with the text input to get it to create smooth pitches like the ones you use.
I REALLY want to do this but the file is on my old laptop that BARELY works, so it might be a while 😬

This is very interesting use of old voice synthesizers, we need more people playin' around with the outdated tech- spice things up (as if each vocaloid song isn't alright extremely unique, but you get the point)

UC Berkeley's vocoder was donated by Kraftwerk after their concert at the college in 1975. It was a 1972 EMS Vocoder 1000. That vocoder was used on the song "ananas Symphonie". I'm guessing this was recorded in 1975/1976 on the EMS Vocoder 1000.

i think the main one was ableton's "resonator", which is basically a vocoder made out of comb filters lmao
there's still not enough SAM songs, to this day even the rest of chipspeech group is not particularly popular, sadly...tho at least they get used sometimes...

Have you tried Spleeter? I don’t know how well it will work on synthetic vocals but I’m sort of curious. Unfortunately the actual project file is on a drive I can’t access at the moment

thanks! it's one of the voices in plogue's "chipspeech" plugin, based on the General Instruments AL series of chips. paul demarinis made a REALLY cool album called "music as a second language" with one of those chips, it LEGIT sounds like some of vektroid's earlier stuff except it's ACTUALLY from 1991
