Last part of our ride in Chimney Rock. The YZ250X gets pretty good mileage and even better mileage in the mountains. I used to run a IMS tank, but it broke. The biggest factor in mileage on any carb bike is setting the float height and good jetting. Stick around to the end to see my MPG.

I watch your videos in hopes that I can ride like that with the honda. Keep up the great videos and bringing out the beauty of the pacific northwest.
Montana is a great spot. Thanks for watching!
Yeah the CRF rally is aimed at a different segment. It's a jack of all trades 60/40 street/dirt bike. It'll never do what a purpose built trail or Enduro bike can. That said, I'm looking to buy a klx250s used here in a week lol. I'm okay with JOAT when it's my only bike.
It is the MOST entertaining motorcycle on the market. If it had a starting engine it would be glory. I have it with a Billetron and it is wonderful. Maybe it is not the one with which one can make the best times, but it is the motorcycle with which one has the most fun.
I had a Billetron at one point. Sold it. It's a fun bike for sure
My question is, for those of us that ride a mix of slow and technical terrain as well as some desert riding and flowy single track, would woods or desert kit be preferable?
I would email them. Tim over there is super helpful. I use the woods kit and it works well in the desert too. For me I want the later opening of the power valves that the woods kit has. The desert kit ramps up quicker.
@SingletrackStafford I've heard that he's very helpful. I've watched all of the videos he's put up on the HITLIS RUclips channel and they are great.

@@kw9799 slow technical trails that aren't high speed. On singletrack I can get 70 miles on the stock tank, plus I carried some fuel in bottles.
The Keihin PWK is a rock-solid, factory-equipped, conventional jet/needle carburetor that has more than earned its reputation, but the fact that your Keihin is running rich at these elevations with your summer jetting are obvious. The air screw can only do so much. Moreover the elevation/temperature compensation given by the metering rod carburetors, and in particular the one with integrated, at-manifold venting (SmartCarb), are only one of the benefits they offer and that draw people to make the switch. Added performance and fuel economy, along with tool-free external adjustability are others, at least with the SC2. We see that you've tried the Billetron Pro and it would be unfortunate for you to lump us into the same category given they are not at all the same thing. Reach out direct if you would. Be happy to set you up with a 38mm SC2 to test for your viewers.
@@SmartCarbFuelSystems thank you for taking the time to reach out. I appreciate the information. I will be reaching out.
@@SingletrackStafford great content for your viewers. These are the questions as they say. We'll keep an eye out for your reach-out and in the meantime happy riding!
@SmartCarbFuelSystems excellent content. I've ridden SmartCarb equipped bikes but never on my own bike. Look forward to speaking and Merry Christmas.
Is that Stansbury Front? My Mikuni with JD jetting had no problem there. One of the things I found most helpful is setting the mechanical power valve on my 300XC-W to my preferred setting. Yellow spring, screw below flush. Just saying...
@@craigster1952 yup Stansbury. Not the biggest elevation change, but I ride other places more where it matters more.
How do you like the those hand guards? Do they stay in place in a fall? Do you think them mounting to the perch and/or master cylinder could break off in a crash?
I've had them for a while and they're awesome. Super strong. I put Teflon tape under the porch and they rotate in a crash. With how they are mounted it doesn't put any pressure on the perch.
The stock carb is great. If you have the stock head on the X i would recommend getting it cut or using an aftermarket, it helps stabilize the jetting quite a bit.
@@panic-revv85 I run the head off the MX model. More compression than the X head. Ran an Apex head before that but there wasn't much difference if at all. Never had much of a problem with the X head other than it was a little lower on power compared to the MX model.
@SingletrackStafford i have a local guy cut mine to whatever spec he has. Probably closer the yz I'm sure. It helped my jetting quite a bit, although it would still load up a bit in high elevation. But winter to summer or St. George i was only bumping the main from a 170 to 172.
Absolutely, I have a 2022 Sherco 300SE with 36mm Keihin and ride from over 12K to 1K with just a change in air screw and pilot jet changes leaving the needle on 2nd position 90% of the time.
@@dirklawyer9939 love it. It's a great carb. Loved it on my Beta as well
That place looks fun! I run my keihin on stock jetting on my Beta 300RE, just went up a clip on needle, and we ride from 2K to 12K in elevation in a day. It's a little lean until 4K and a little rich above 8-9K but overall it handles it just fine. I opened the power valve up 3/4 turn and really it's barely noticeable. Keihin really is so much better than Mikuni carbs. I think people exaggerate the jetting and really like to tinker on their bikes so they feel like their at peak performance, but let's be honest, 99% of us are not pushing these bikes hard enough, nor are we skilled enough to either benefit or suffer significantly from a little carb setting. So long as it will idle and doesn't stall when you crack the throttle, that's good enough for 95% of riders. 4% of us could use a little adjustment if we are really charging some bigger hills above 5K. I live at sea level so I'm biased, but we primarily ride in the mountains. If I lived at 5K and was only going higher than i may make a jetting change but the bike absolutely rips wherever I take it.
@@Natedoc808 you'll never reach perfection because even as you you up high you'll lose horsepower. Having a quick adjust air screw and turning it quarter turn here and there, the bike is as perfect as it can be.
@@SingletrackStafford Yeah pretty much, there is no perfection when you're changing elevations like that. I use the quick adjust power valve on my Beta as well as I get up to 8K+ if the hill climbs are being particularly demanding.
@@SingletrackStafford So my regular powervalve setting is 3/4 more agressive than stock, so the "wet" or retarded timing setting feels almost agressive as the stock "dry" or advanced timing setting. So then when I need even more power I click into "Dry" mode and at lower elevations it has quite a noticeable hit which is great for fast sections or track and helps overcome the power loss up above 8K. kind of a unique strategy that's possible given what the Beta has available with the adjustable mechanical powervalve and the mapping switch.
Sweet ride-along of a familiar place! On my 09 i was able to find that super sweet spot on jetting. It had a Keihin Carb. I would take it from 3,000ft up to 10,000ft. It would have a little power loss above 8000 but not enough to worry about. I loved that thing.
The power loss at high elevation is usually because of the thin air. It's amazing how far the carb can go.
Is the 250x have a twitchy throttle like the fuel injected 4 strokes are?
I haven't ridden a 4 stroke in 10 years so I can't comment
i really hate swapping out the jets for the hot desert temps and cold winters, i tried the lectron carb, i could only get it to run " ok " wasnt ever thrilled with it, went back to running stock carb and once you really get use to jetting for elevation and temps its so much better, i ride single track like this as well as wide open desert or motocross tracks, stock carb for sure.
Yeah the Keihin is great when you know how to use it. I had the same experience with the Lectron. Some people are fine with just okay performance.
@@SingletrackStafford what fuel do you use and mix ratio btw, i just mix 110 with 91 pump
@@premix3663 40:1. 91 pump only. Lucas oil semi synthetic oil.
@@SingletrackStafford ^ this right here. I run 44:1 Lucas semi synthetic or as backup 927. A little fatter mix than the 50:1 it calls for is key for elevation.

@@gerrygodden8051 I grew up near Seattle rode that type of terrain for my whole childhood. Nothing more slippery than a wet tree root.
Yes for sure they can be slippery, the sudden trip to the ground every once in a while makes you very aware of that. Just want to say I am enjoying your videos and your coverage of the yz250x set up. A lot of us here are loyal to Yamaha and are excited about the new action with Cody riding for them now. I had a 2016 but always had issues with the jetting even though carb is the best, glad to see the power jet fix as that makes total sense. Also it sure looks like the Hitlis is a great new solution to make the power smooth and more controlled. I found it tiring to deal with the sudden power in our terrain. hello, i have had the yz250x in chile for 2 years and i do some hard enduro and racing, i have made several modifications and am testing the bike, for now i have: 13 tooth sprocket, 51 rear sprocket, 8 ounce flywheel, lowered head like a yz cross, for more pleasure, electric fan and external dewalt drill battery. the bike is left with very good acceleration at low speed for trailer enduro. can you make a list of your changes? i see that you were also able to get a hitlis kit, this in theory would replace the flywheel and the cylinder head approx? with the hitlis kit i understand the bike is more progressive but does it really have more engine power at low speed? or do you have to put a weighted flywheel anyway.
@@Villalobos_822 it doesn't replace the head and flywheel. I run the mx head and GYTR flywheel as well. HITLIS makes everything work better. The bike is smoother and more powerful.
So basically Hitlis allows good throttle "response"... However it removes the powerband "surge"/"hit".... -YZ250X -GYTR flywheel should be added first ...less clutching, less stalling...still rippy/fun
